"The location of the "festival" was crap and
also the bands that played before The Cure weren't enough. So,
everyone was waiting for The Cure. About an
hour before their turn people started making their way to the front
rows. There must have been at least 10.000
people, although i read about 15.000. The wait for The Cure seemed
eternal. Then Jason came on stage followed
by the others and finally Robert who greeted us with a "hello" in
Greek. After the first drum sounds i knew they
were playing Out of this world.Robert's voice was crystal clear,
strong powerfull and seem self-confident.You
can hear that in the video. Also,he has lost weight and looked
gorgeous on stage. The sound was very good
and everyone seemed to be in very good mood.
After the first song Robert said "thank u"
in greek in a very yummy way. Then watching me fall came.Strong
and powerfull as always. The sound in Plainsong
wasn't very good, Robert doing his usual walks around the stage
bending to people in the front rows.He seemed
really happy.Then..Figurehead...It was fantastic.Very clear and
simple version, it really made it for me.Especially
Robert singing multiple times in the end "i will never be clean
again"..Robert changed the lyrics singing
"i can loose myself in Chinese arts and Athinian girls"-that was fun.
Open was very energetic as usual. Then, two
suprises for me: Robert said "the next song is called The Drowing
man".It was played as in the 96 tour. After
this i heard the notes of The baby screams which was played very good
too.Simon's bass was excelent in this.Somewhere
there Robert said "as u can see this is not a greatest hits
show",followed by The kiss.Robert's solo was
amazing, many people not knowing he is such an awesome guitar
player were blinking."I wish u were dead...".Followed
by a beautiful and tender If only tonight we could sleep,
the atmosphere was great.Then..HA HA HA and
Shake dog shake. The drums were really intense on this.I smiled
as i heard From the edge of the deep green
sea and so did many fans. The guitar parts were played very nicely.
I remember also Roger playing guitar on some
song (it was Open - Craig). He
looked cute, like being proud
and looking at the audience to see him play
(it reminded me of Mr.Bean when he shows off hehe). When 100
years started people went crazy.Someone close
to me started shouting "this is it, this is it".A very powerful
version, everyone was stoned. When i heard
39 i was a bit disappointed i never liked this song (although it rocks
live) but i was hoping for something else. Also
it was not so good as i had heard it before, maybe Robert was
begining to get tired. They said goodbye with
a plain and always welcome version of Bloodflowers.
After that they came for the 1st encore.Robert
said "for everyone who came for the hits, this is your 15 minutes".
I heard some negative quotes about this line. Many
people think that Robert said it in a bad way.I don't think so,
as he was smiling. When Inbetween days started
everyone jumped around. The same thing happened on Just like
heaven. However i was not excited by these
2 songs performed. When the first notes of Forest came up people
went "wwwwwwwoooooooowww".After that they
started jumping around and singing. It was not a long version of
it, with a nice solo in the end by Robert. Then
they left and people kept shouting more more.So they came back and Robert
said something like "i think u will like that" and played Pornography. An
excellent choice, although the
sound was not very good.In the end came a
rather tired Disintegration with Robert singing in a powerless and
ordinary way.
The show was about 2 hours and 15 minutes long.Overall
they played excellent but many people here didn't
really enjoy it because of the lack of singles.Of
course all hardcore fans were very pleased.I personally think
that it would be good to hear a few more singles,
exculding maybe Watching me fall and 39.Because many fans
were tired listening to unknown and
long songs. Robert was not moving much on stage (it was the nature of the
songs) but he seemed very concentrated. On
some point some idiot was ponting a laser beam on Simon's eyes
and he just opened his arms with dissapointment
like saying "what's the matter with u people?"
Someone i know got the setlist and said that
on it there where also Cut here, 3 imaginary boys, M and Play for
today. Also it seems Pornography and Disintegration
were not on the setlist.
Overall it was a fantastic show and i was very
glad seeing Robert in good shape (even his make-up seemed
fantastic)."

"It was a great show!It outdid my wildest expectations!Although
the place it was held was a last- minute
decision, the Cure managed to make us forget
about the details and enjoy all these songs we've loved-some
of them had wished but never had expected
to hear(i loved the playlist!).Wonderful atmosphere,good sound,nice
performance from all and Robert's voice simply...captivating!"

"Just like heaven....
Last time I saw them perform, was on July 1998
In Lyon - France, in a great venue, (a roman amphitheatre)
with a great setlist, BUT with a tired, a
very very tired Robert, not being able to sing through most of the songs...
To be honest, ever since then i was a bit disappointed,
and i had ceased "following" the Cure around (Before
that was the most amazing 16 &17 December
1997 in London - Shepherd's Bush Empire ) and i wasn't reading
the reviews of the concerts either...
Last night though was heaven again...
It brought back all the memories, made me
"remember" why i loved the Cure so much in the first place...
I had no idea a concrt could do this much
for you... First time i saw them in my own country-city... (too young in
1987, away in 1995).
The crowd was (most of it) very enthusiastic,
I felt a little sorry for poor Dandy Warhols, cause near their ending,
no one paid attention, everyone was screaming
"Robert" and "The Cure". I was stepped on, nearly died of
asphyxia, lost my shoe (found it fortunately
after 10 minutes by a great favour of luck), fell down twice (everyone
was trying for a better view), lost some hair,
but in heaven...
Robert's voice was very clear, crystal clear,
the quality of the sound was amazing, the heat was almost unbearable
but no one complained...
It was nice to see Greek people so enthusiastic...
(to tell you the truth i wasn't expecting something like that) . I
loved the setlist, although i think that it
was a very devoted fan's favorite, not one appropriate for a festival just
for a Cure concert.... (By the way I would
be obliged to have it if someone has it, cause emmm well, the beer and
the sun, they don't help memory very much)
.
Roger - If you ever read this, please
let me know if you finally went to your favorite restaurant in Glyfada
(George's steak house), I spent all Tuesday
hanging out of it expecting to see you arrive there (people were
staring :) )
Robert thank you...Please come back soon"

"I am still recovering from last night's amazing
Cure concert!!! The Festival tour began the best way possible in
Athens and i hope they continue to play like
that. The set list was the Greatest Hits cd, as it would have been if
Robert had chosen the songs. Pure Cure music,
pure magic!! Robert looked in great shape and he seemed to
enjoy it more than everyone, also Simon was
in great mood! Robert's Greek were impressive once more and i
think the fans appreciated it a lot.
For some fans that were not just Cure fans
but came to the festival, it was a bit of dissapointment that they didnt
play much of their jumpy songs (apart from
the 1st encore, where Robert said "this is your 15 minutes") and
maybe this will be an issue for the next gigs,
since they are all part of festivals, where people with different music
taste gather. But for me that i was last year
in Roskilde and attended 2 Dream tour gigs in 2000, it was great,
reliving these awsome nights! The Baby Screams
was the surprise of the night, very pleasant indeed! I was a bit
surprised that they didnt play Cut Here or
Just Say Yes, but i guess they wanted to cover the gap between the
last time they played in Athens (1995) and
focused on Bloodflowers album.
I am sure it will be a great festival tour,
will try to go to Hyde Park or Benicassim, i am so looking forward to the
new album, the Cure are here alive and kickin'.
Have fun people, the best is yet to come!!!"

"It shoud be named the wish tour. Not because
they played songs from the wish album (not at all!) but because
they played everything i never expected to
hear live from them and wished that someday they will. The show
was fantastic. I think "Pornography was the
highlight of the night. Before they started this song Robert said "I
think you might guess this one". After the
third song Robert commended the play list of the concert saying "As
you can see this is not Greates Hits". It
was one of the best concerts in Athens dedicated to the cureheads and
the hardcore fans. If you haven't been listening
to the whole albums you could not enjoy it last night. I guess it
was a dream. The Cure haven't lost a bit of
their shine. And it is a dark strange shine."

"It was a massive show! Everything was amazing
tonight in Athens! The Cure started with Out Of This World,
continued with Watching Me Fall and then straight
after they played Plainsong. I cannot remember the setlist exactly but
they also played:Baby Screams (bloody great and big surprise!), Disintegration(last
song), A Forest
(single version unfortunately). Forgive me
if I forgot anything. The length of the show was 2hours and 20 minutes
and the attendance was about 10.000.
The only thing that i remember is that Roger
played the guitar during Open which really impressed me cause i
had never noticed that before. For the other
two questions i am not sure but i cannot remember Perry playing
keyboards or Robert playing the 6 string bass.
Maybe i was too drunk!
The sad thing is that most of the people continue
complaining in the internet forum of rockfm and in the radio
station producers that the show was very very
bad because The Cure played only for the hardcore fans and not
for the majority of the 15000(this is the
attendance for sure) people who were expecting to listen some more hits!
The good thing is that everyone agrees that
all the members of the band and mainly Robert showed that they are
amazing musicians, despite the fact that they
were not satisfied from the setlist.
Have fun in the rest of the shows! The Cure RULEEEESSSSSSS!!!"
