  • News from Mexico:
  • "The magazine Rolling Stone Mexico (www.rollingstone.com.mx) the page just say "come on and get it" in the august issue will contain a interview with Robert Smith; at this time, that's all I know, but in the fm radiostation wradio 96.9 they have an ad with the voice of Robert saying "this is Robert of The Cure and you're listening to wradio 96.9 , rolling stone mexico. they also say that very soon will be a CURE PARTY at the bulldog cafe.

I think in the CURE party they will give away several TRILOGY packs.

They have been airing 2 different ads with no information of the dates of the interview in the radio or the magazine. I hope in the next few days i could have more information about it.

Also, after 5 weeks the TRILOGY downs to 2nd place in the top ten at www.mixup.com.mx, the largest chain recordstore in Mexico.

2 weeks ago in the newspaper EL UNIVERSAL, the main article at show page was an interwiew with ROBERT, he talked about the TRILOGY, the future of the band and THEY ASSURE THAT AT LAST IN THE 2004 THE CURE WILL COME TO MEXICO CITY.

Also in the magazine CONOZCA MAS in the dvd section the set 4.5 stars of 5 to the TRILOGY and they highly recomended."

    (Thanks Jorge)

  • And speaking of the El Universal article, you can read the english translation in the Interviews section.

  • A new article in Brazil:
  • "The August issue of the Brazilian music mag. DYNAMITE has Robert on the cover ( scan included ), and the line "The Triumphant Return of The Cure". There's an interview inside, but absolutely nothing really new that should be worth the translation. Also, I'm not sure if you've already posted it, but the latest issue of UNCUT mag. has a small but very positive review of the Trilogy DVD."

    (Thanks Antonio)

  • New (well, new to me) Cure book in France:
  • "I just bought a book called "The Cure – Minibooks". It’s an A-Z book about the band."

Update: "About the "new" french Cure book that you add on your News page... It's not a NEW book ! This one was published in 2001 !!! I buy my copy few years ago ! And I put details about it on my website : http://membres.lycos.fr/rodolfxxx/books.htm. And I have a copy For trade (perhaps it could interest somebody...)."

    (Thanks Bruno, Rodxxx and JC)

  • Cure covers/samples:
  • "Killingbird has recorded a cover version of "Just Like Heaven" for their 2KSounds self-titled release."

    (Thanks Rust)

"I just got the Cibo Matto album "Viva! La Woman!" (it's been out since '96 I think, so I'm a bit slow on the uptake...) and noticed that on track 3, "Sugar Water" (which was also a single) that the song samples the drum and bass track from the Pictures Of You Extended Dub Remix (albeit slowed down a lot)."

    (Thanks ManInsideMyMouth)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Here is an excerpt i spotted on the Emagic Logic site, an interview with music producer Mark Pilati:

"One of my latest productions was an album for longtime David Bowie guitarist Earl Slick, which involved vocalists such as Bowie, Robert Smith from The Cure, Joe Elliot of Def Leppard, Royston Langdon of Spacehog, and Martha Davis from the Motels. On this project, I had to import from other sequence programs, computer platforms, and audio formats; trade MIDI and audio files over the Internet as well as via conventional mail; work in drastically different facilities, from state-of-the-art multi-track studios to hotel rooms; and, scavenge through the initial demos so I could utilize some of the original ideas and make them fit into new keys and tempos. Logic has made all of this work so everyday as to be transparent, with minimal impact on the creative process."

The full article can be found here:

    http://www.emagic.de/home/artists/markplati.php?lang=EN"

    (Thanks Roger)

"There was a short mention of The Cure in People Magazine at the end of the review of Dave Gahan's Paper Monsters. "And while Gahan's music also evokes other '80s alternative heroes like U2, The Cure and Morrissey at times, it would fit right in alongside Coldplay."

    (Thanks Angel)

"Yesterday in the spanish channel Antena 3 TV, they aired "Lullaby" (complete) in a program called "UPA DANCE" .The teenagers was dancing (your looks very gothic) when Lullaby sound..."

    (Thanks Alex)

"The original version of 'Inbetween Days' from 'The Head On The Door' featured in a scene in a Goth club in sitcom 'Roger Roger' last night on BBC 1. Not sure if the creators were ridiculing Goths or whether they were ridiculing the central character who was very much a "fish out of water" in that environment, but either way, it was the usual stereotypical (inaccurate) depiction of Goths. However, it was pleasant to hear 'Inbetween Days' on mainstream television."

    (Thanks James)

  • You can read the great article and interview from Mojo in the Interview section.

  • Robert interview in Humo magazine:
  • "In the HUMO (great belgium) magazine from this week there 's an intervieuw with robert from Serge Simonart. No nonsense or blabbling along about the dvd just a great chat about life and what robert's doing with it. If you like i can make a shorter version of it for you. The funniest part is where robert is telling that he isn't that keen with fashion guru's who say what is hip to wear. Once he attended a party from such a guy and after too mutch drinks he wanted to go to the toilet, but there was a long line, so he went into the bathroom and did it in the bath.

Perhaps by writing it down like this it's not funny but if your read it is!"

    (Thanks Bert)

  • Ben Folds has released his ep Speed Graphic( which as mentioned a few weeks ago, includes a cover of Inbetween Days). There are only two ways to get it though. One is by ordering it from Ben's website, and the other is by picking it up at one of Ben's shows with Tori Amos this summer.
  • Update: "You can also get it from Apple's iTunes Music Store. Of course you have to have a Mac, OS X and an account with them. It's only $4 or 99¢ per track. It's quite good!"

(Thanks Pietro, Steve, Jeff, Chris, Brad and Jerry)

  • Trilogy recorded 6th week US sales of 1,105 (first week it has shown an increase!) and is #24 on the Billboard/Soundscan Top Music DVDs chart. Total US sales so far - 13,073.
  • (Thanks Jeff)

    (Thanks Donal)

  • Cure covers:
  • "I posted a few weeks ago a project about making covers of the Cure via Internet. Every one record a track of a song and post it on a FTP. When all the instruments are recorded, a mix is done. We've recorded A Forest and Boys don't Cry. You can read the topics in the french forum here : http://www.foreverdrowning.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=67

The FTP address could be find in the topics... but it's all in french... and the open hours of the FTP Server is about Noon to Midnight (french hour, GMT +1). "

Update: "here is the ftp address for the cure covers i talked about few days ago...

    ftp://untitled:forest@lordspider.no-ip.com/

the ftp is only open from 7pm to midnight (french hour, GMT + 1).

here how the ftp works :

2 folders : A forest and Boys don't cry. In every folders, you'll find two others folders. One for the diffrent tracks and one for the diffrent mixs in mp3 : 56 k and ADSL songs are available (for 56 k users, the mp3 are 128 kbits encoded, for the ADSL users, the mp3 are 192 kbits encoded).

    That's it ! so simple !"

    (Thanks Nicolas)

  • Curespotting:
  • "On an old italian movie, "Io e mia sorella" (Me & my sister), featuring Carlo Verdone, maybe of the late 80s, i saw for an instant the famous Inbetween days poster, with the band colored like in the single sleeve .

    (Thanks Pietro)

    July 22nd

  • More info about the new article in Mojo magazine:
  • "There's a large 8 page cure special and interview with Robert in Mojo magazine (August issue with Radiohead front cover) in the UK

The article to quote "delves into their mid 80s goth swathed glory days - LSD.lunacy, beer can sculpture, existential despair, and of course, smudged lipstick.'I thought we should be making Mahler symphonies not pop music' reasons Robert Smith" Includes an interview with Robert in the Olympia Studios

There's a huge clear photo of the masked 1982 Pornography line-up, 1979 live photo, early 1980 photo,1985 photo of Simon and Robert, Tim Pope directing Robert on Inbetween Days.

Robert finishes the interview with "I still get very agitated about the same things I did when I was 21. I just don't let it ruin my life...If I'd attempted to live my life the way I did in 1982 and 1983, I'd have ended up killing myself." Robert chuckles. "Still, you're going to end up dying anyway. And, you know, it doesn't matter if we all die."

    (Thanks Steve)

"There's a huge eight page feature about The Cure in this months (UK) Mojo Magazine! It covers the making of Pornography and The Top and tells a lot about the arguments, drugs etc around that time. It also features contributions from Robert, Simon and most surprisingly Lol. As well as the huge article there's also loads of pictures from that era including some backstage stuff and promo shots and on the magazines packaging, it advertises the Cure article in big letters to the top right of the cellophane it's wrapped in. The article is fascinating and well worth checking out! "

Does anyone feel like transcribing the article? I know its massive, but perhaps we could get a few people to do one page each or something like that?

    (Thanks Mark)

  • New Cure article from Magic:
  • "Hi there! just wanted to let you know that there's an article about The Cure in MAGIC, a french mag... It's about the DVD and Clinical Prescriptions, the new book."

    (Thanks Olivier)

    Here's a map."

    (Thanks Ange)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I was wondering if anybody could help me with this crossword puzzle. It appears in the Weekly Alibi (Albuquerque's alternative weekly newspaper). The clue for 32-Down is as follows: "Robert Smith band, with 'The'". It's four letters long, and the second letter appears to be a "u". Do you have any idea what it could possibly be? : ) "

    (Thanks Chrissie)

    July 19th

  • There's another Cure auction item for charity at Ebay. This time its a copy of Greatest Hits autographed by the entire band.
  • (Thanks Pauly676767 )

  • Finally! Some reports on The Dom Joly show:
  • "They did Just Like Heaven (extra short version), with a smiling ‘as though we were mates’ approach with Dom Joly after, where the regular dancing bears rated the performance as ‘blinding’.

Dom introduced them as an apology, as though they were accidentally booked again.

The Kiss jumped straight in most of the way through and out, as it was used to exit the show."

    (Thanks hazard.mail)

A comic sketch involved someone introducing himself as the original singer of Joy Division (pre Ian Curtis) – and involved a jokily performed version of Love Will Tear Us Apart. Maybe the Cure were playing the backing music? It sounded very close to the Joy Division version (which I reckon they could manage), but I wasn’t paying enough attention to be sure. They weren’t shown to be playing it for sure.

"They aired both the "Just Like Heaven" and "The Kiss". "Just Like Heaven" was played towards the beginning of the show but was much shorter than normal. Some comments from Dom: "last season, some people were a bit miffed about my comments made about this band, but, (to Robert) we're all okay now, aren't we?" . Or something along those lines. Robert seemed to be enjoying it although he said very little. "The Kiss" was played at the very end of the show and was pretty much the whole song (possibly a slightly shorter ending) and had the full long intro. By the way, if anyone is interested in watching this program when The Cure are not on it, I wouldn't bother as it's pretty bad."

    (Thanks Newartpreacher)

"They played both JLH & The Kiss. After they first played JLH Dom Joly came over to speak to Robert and had a bit of a comedy sketch routine with Dom Joly saying that it was his favourite song, but what was it called again type of sketch. Then, he got the dancing bears to give their opinion of it and they all stood back with their hands over their eyes to which Dom Joly said something like they think it was a blinding (good) song. The Kiss was a shortened version, but still very good."

    (Thanks Ed)

"dom joly show - both jlh and the kiss were aired - jlh was slightly shortened for some reason ... the dancing bears were on again too ...... the kiss was also complete with the 'f-word' - i thought the bbc may have censored it ......"

    (Thanks David)

  • Cure cover:
  • "I was in the car this week when a local radio station, 97.3 in Cincinnati, OH played Goldfinger's cover of Just Like Heaven. It might have been the most hideous thing I have ever heard. I only listened to the whole thing out of the same curiosity that one watches a car wreck. Has anyone else heard it? Thoughts? "

    (Thanks Jeffrey)

  • Curespotting:
  • "(Translated from Spanish)

In the Spanish free magazine named D00 (Doble Cero), in the issue corresponding to July-August, there´s a little review of the new album by Love Lesbian, named "Ungravity", and the article begins as follows: (I include only the part in which The Cure is mentioned)

"Robert Smith himself chose them (Love Lesbian) as guest artist in the concerts from the Dream Tour 2000 in Spain (...) The members of Love Lesbian say "When it coms to talk about our influences, we have to talk about The Cure (inevitably), Bowie, or even, Pulp"

    (Thanks Sharon)

"i was just watching an MTV show called MADE.it was about this boy that was having a hard time graduating from school.at the end he found out he did graduate and they started playing mint car in the background!"

    (Thanks Asa)

    July 18th

  • The Dom Joly show will be repeated on saturday (July 19th) at 00.30-01.00 GMT on BBC3. BTW, did anyone have any comments on the show? I didn't hear anything from the UK regulars about it. Did they air Just Like Heaven, or only The Kiss?
  • (Thanks Ronny)

  • Robert checks out The Thrills:
  • "Robert Smith was at the Astoria, London last night (July 16th) to see The Thrills. I was there on the the second balcony row where there are those little 4 seat booths. I was standing and Robert came up the left hand stairs and walked right along the row I was standing in right in front of me and I obviously recognised him straight away. I had to lean back to let him through and as I was looking at him he brushed past me. He was wearing an untucked black shirt. From there he continued along and went onto the VIP balcony on the right side of the stage. He went straight backstage and came out about 25mins before The Thrills came on. At the end of the gig he stayed talking to some people but I didn't recognise them. I thought he had arrived with Jason but I couldn't really make him out at the end. It turned out to be a real thrill!"

    (Thanks Marco)

  • Robert in Sonic Seducer? Anyone have more info on this?:
  • "I've just come from Dusseldorf in Germany where I saw the new Sonic Seducer zine with Smith on cover and a DVD with live (which one ?) by The Cure. Have you heard about that ?"

    (Thanks Yan)

  • Curespotting:
  • I (Craig) just wanted to mention that the Boys Don't Cry poster makes another appearance at Homestarrunner.com. It's in the new Strong Sad character page. No big deal, but I never pass up a chance to plug the Homestar site, and Strong Bad. : )

"No Robert Smith on TV but a little stuff about hair of stars during the JDM on MCM french channel. Speakers talk about hair, cut hair etc...from foreign or french big stars (Pascal Obispo, Florent Pagny arghhhh) anf finished with Robert Smith (clip of Just Like Heaven) who have the gold medal for the best crazy brushing...well something like that."

    (Thanks Yan)

    July 17th

  • Robert did finally call in to WBCN today and while the interview was only 6 minutes long, he had a lot of info to give out. Most importantly, the b-sides box set is scheduled for release in Oct. of this year. He also said that the band will go into the studio with Ross Robinson on Oct. 1st to record the new album, confirmed that he has shelved his solo project for now, confirmed the cd re-issues coming next year with bonus discs, and plugged the Trilogy dvd. I've posted an mp3 of the interview on the audio page, so listen for yourself.
  • Update - "I didn't see it mentioned on the web page so I thought you might not have heard - several songs after the interview with Robert on WBCN today, Adam-12 said on air that they talked a bit further off-air, with Robert stating that the new CD should be out in 2004 and they would definitely tour in support of it, certainly hitting Boston so I assume that would mean at least a UK/US tour. Not exactly an unexpected diamond of information but hey, in the interest of completism..."

    (Thanks Justin)

    July 15th

  • Read the english translation of the recent Rock & Folk interview in the Interviews section.

  • More info on that new Cure article in Mojo:
  • "Quick mention that there's quite a good feature on The Cure in the new issue of MOJO magazine, out now in the UK. More details at www.mojo4music.com.

It's basically about the Pornography era and the band's move into pop, featuring interviews with Robert, Lol and Steve Severin. It's written by Alexis Petridis of The Guardian newspaper and there's a rather fine outtake from the Pornography album cover sessions and even a comment from photographer Michael Kostiff on how the cover was done.

    (Thanks Martin)

  • New article in Mexican newspaper:
  • "This is the main page from Mexican newspaper "El Universal" dated july 13th 2003 in their entertainment section. The newspaper also includes a Trilogy DVD review and another Robert article inside"

    (Thanks Luis)

  • Steve Severin talks about The Glove in D-Side magazine:
  • "I find some interesting news in the new issue of the french musik mag called 'D-SIDE'

There is an interview with Steve Severin & Budgie and He asked him in the interview (this is just 2 questions because the others are related to the new Live DVD of Siouxsie) :

Are you still in contact with Robert Smith ?

Steve : Yes. I didn't see him for ages but I meet him at the Hyde Park concert last summer.

Do you like to collaborate again with him ?

Steve :Yes, I would like. But I'm not sure that we will find time. I would like to release a remix album of The Glove songs for the 20 years of the release of Blue Sunshine.

Also, there is an article about the really great and amazing book related to The Cure now available (I received one copy this saturday and it's the best book I see about The Cure !) "

    (Thanks Serena)

  • More new Cure articles:
  • "There is a two page trilogy review and interview with robert in this month's issue of the u.k mag DVD MONTHLY. Nothing mentioned we did'nt already now but some cool pics."

    (Thanks Jason)

"Excellent six page article in this month's - august - of mojo magazine covering the 81 - 85 period."

    (Thanks Hugh)

  • Cure cover:
  • "Review: T In The Park, 2003, NME Stage

There are a few technical hitches before Hell Is For Heroes convert their wild-eyed energy into something that doesn't scare the shit out of our eardrums. Once they hit their flow however, we get pogo-tastic renditions of 'I Can Climb Mountains' and The Cure's 'Boys Don't Cry' that leave crowd members thrilled and not a little damp from flying pints of warm beer"

    (Thanks Ange)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I've been reading a website devoted to guitarist Dave Navarro (ex-Jane's Addiction, ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers and now with Jane's Addiction again) and found a few interesting mentions in the "Glossary" section of the site (and other parts of the site). Go to http://www.so-to-speak-if-you-will.com/glossary.shtml and have a look under "C", and "S". Don't know what the sources of this info are, but interesting nonetheless."

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

    July 12th

  • A couple of reports on Robert's interview from "Tout le monde en parle" tonight:
  • "Well, tonight show was pretty boring (tout le monde en parle). They talked about the band's problems with the song "killing an arb"...specially in uk. Smith says something like "the bigest regret in my career is writing this title for this song". Eric Cantona, the famous french soccer player was also as guest. He says that he totally agree with Robert's opinion about religion and believes of people. Smith talked about not trust in anything and that religions always creates problems in the world....those kind of thoughts. Of course, they promoted the trilogy DVD released...small extract from "Lovesong". The interview is about 20mn long..."

    (Thanks Julien)

"I've just watched Robert, and I'm wondering a couple of things. Somebody will tell you better what they said, I can't understand french. But I wonder why Robert goes around the world to promote his DVD also if he doesn't like this kind of thing and always seems so suffering. He said to that stupid presenter "It's not fair you laugh and I must wait to hear the translation to understand why you are laughing". Poor boy, never looking in the camera, he had to suffer for 5 minutes during a horrible mix of old songs (first of all Killing an arab!) with images of the studio, that horrible presenter making stupid faces and people clapping their hands.

Just a comment... robert has got few shirts, I think. He spent all 2002 summer tour with the same t-shirt with a red revers, and, obviously he used the same shirt for both berlin concerts. But during this interview he had the same shirt! A black "vintage" shirt, and the same necklace of those concerts (and late night out of the tempodrom). Maybe like Linus with his blanket..."

"I don't agree at all with those pessimistic reports about the interview in France. Surely you can't enjoy it and catch the point and the mood if you don't understand french. As I often watch that show (ToutLeMondeEnParle) and was really looking forward to see the interview, I thought it was excellent. Robert was surrounded by, indeed, Cantona, which pleasantly seemed to have sympathy for Robert and completely agreed with his evocative ideals... he even added that the world would be much better if everybody was thinking as Robert does.

Robert spoke about his total lack of faith. He said maybe he would like to have faith, but he doesn't really know people for which he thinks faith has helped them to have a better life. So he doesn't see the point in it. Robert kind of emitted the ideas which he managed really well to write down with the song "Where the birds always sing...". There was also spoken about religion being used to manipulate people etc. ...but still through it all, there are things to enjoy in the world.

Next to him sat a nice actress which was really pleased as she revealed to be a huge fan of the Cure in her youth. She even mentioned having had big posters of him all over in her bedroom. As the front-presenter said, it must have been an old dream come true! And yes, we heard a short music history of the cure meant as an introduction. And I honestly don't see any point in saying it was a horrible mix, as it just were Cure songs!!! It were mostly the old pop songs, the ones most people know, so they can identify Mr Robert Smith. (And who cares about his shirt...)

He also said about drugs that our society maybe has a wrong view of it, that in some conditions and well used it can be justified. And for example, a really badly used and vicious drug is Tobacco. And they mentioned that "killing an Arab" affair. He said he regretted the tittle. Next to that, the good thing was that, in a way, he could promote french existentialism (of Camus) in foreign contries.

The people were glad having him there, hoping for more soon, I guess. Lot's of people watch that program so I think it's more worth spending a bit time there than making an incredible amount of interviews which you only get the chance to read or hear if you follow "the chain of flowers". That way other people will remember about the Cure and will be confirmed that 'they're still doing it'... Why not be happy ?? I am. So as a fan I was realy pleased to see him there. Therefor : Thank you Robert Smith!!, and for the other things too..."

    (Thanks Tanguy)

"Well, you know, here in France, this show is quite quite special. Not only because people adore or hate Thierry Ardisson, but it's one of the only places on TV you can see I would say special personalities (even if The Models were also there, arghhhhh !!) The interview with Robert has been incredibly great. As each invited person, he's first be "attacked" by the interviewers : very funny when Laurent Baffie said he looked like a drunk Liz Tailor ! But another time, something weird happened around the table as Robert spoke, shy, naive, uncomfortable, kind, quiet and incredibly smart.

The track selection (Killing An Arab, Play For Today, Forest, Boy's Don't Cry, The Love Cats, The Walk, Let's Go To Bed, In Between Days, Close To Me, Lullaby, Just Like Heaven and Trilogy's Lovesong with few images) didn't reflect both sides of The Cure, this idea of duality I love so much. It's true I would have prefer if it could have been longer and if Robert could have talk more about Trilogy and his work in general.

BUT it's been much much more interesting because of what Robert managed to express about drugs and the way our occidental cultures demonised their use and about religion and its fucking bad impact on people around the world. The most beautiful thing I heard is that morality doesn't have to come from something above us but can be find in each human being. A French actress Rachida Brakni said she was a huge fan and soccer player Eric Cantona said that what Robert expressed was magnificent and that he agreed with every single world Robert had pronounce.

I just hope that in each country and especially in the US, you'll have a chance to hear and see Robert in such a fabulous mood and thoughts. BRILLANT !"

    (Thanks David)

  • And an old Cure performance will be on French tv next month:
  • "In 1996, The Cure played "Mint car" for the french TV show "Nulle part ailleur" (Canal+). Just after this live show, they also played "Boys don't cry" for the audience and the fans who were in the studio, but this song had never been broadcast on TV... until this year ! YES, according to the french magazine "Rock and Folk" (last issue), Canal+ will broadcast some live performances this summer during the "Canal+ Les Lives" shows, and this unavailable performance of "Boys don't cry" is programmed for august 8th !!! So, french fans, be ready to record it !!!"

  • Curespotting:
  • "There was a short article on the brazilian's "Trilogy marathon" in the newspaper today, it will happen tonight I guess (07/11) on satellite but I didn't care to translate it because it was just a bunch of cliches. It starts like "after many wild mood swings" and ends up like "is there a cure for Cure?", you get the idea. It was a holiday yesterday in the city where the newspaper is made, so it seems that it was written by whoever was available... anyway, it says that it will be an edited version, something inbetween the promo and the full stuff, it says it lasts "almost 3 hours" but it doesn't say which songs were cut off, just says that the "happier songs" will be present."

  • More 6-string bass help and discussion:
  • "Thought I'd add my thoughts to the 6-string bass debate, hopefull we can help someone make a potentially expensive decision (whether good or bad...) !!

I've got a Danelectro Innuendo Baritone, purchased simply because the Danelectro 6-String Bass was (or still is?) completely unavailable in the UK (or indeed Europe I think) and I figured there wasn't much point buying a 6-string for a cheap couple of hundred quid but then paying another hundred to ship it from the US.

Anyway, I restrung it with Fender Bass VI strings (readily available at Strings Direct on the net) and just tuned E to E as with a normal 6-string bass or guitar. Sure, I had a few problems getting the set up just right, but not too much difficulty.

The only slight trouble is trying to keep the low E in tune. For the sound we're all after this won't present a problem, cos virtually no Cure songs venture into low E territory, you'll be on the top three strings for most songs.

The sound you get all depends on the quality of effects you're using, and I certainly don't think the sounds I can achieve are a million miles from The Cure. No doubt the Danelectro 6-String Bass would be the preferable choice, but if that's not possible then the Innuendo Baritone restrung is a good enough substitute. Anyone thinking of gigging would be well advised to have a professional look at it and do a set up for you, I like mine the way it is for home use but I wouldn't have confidence enough in it to stay in tune for a gig. I think the biggest warning is that it's a bolt on neck and the neck adjusting nut is at the bottom and can only be reached by removing the neck. That is quite a pain.

Anyway, take a look at http://www.danelectro.com/Bariblast.htm but be warned there's two innacuracies on the page. For instance it gives the action from E to E, except a Baritone doesn't come strung E to E......also, the number of frets listed is incorrect. Mine definitely had 25 frets when I looked at it 5 seconds ago. In fact count them on the photo !

If that doesn't tickle your fancy then I do know that Burns also do a 6-String bass. I'm pretty sure they call it a baritone, but it is in fact strung E to E like a 6-string bass, and I do remember reading only good reviews. You are of course moving into slightly more expensive territory there.

Hope that's a bit more help for everyone."

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

"With regard to the danelectro bass 6 , there is a baritone guitar made by danelectro that is not to be confused with the bass baritone (the baritone bass is the one you want not baritone guitar) I have danelctro bass 6 and fender 6 and they are both brilliant , danelectro i use a graphic equaliser with , as long as you use stereo chorus and a hint of delay sounds amazing, I tried to get the perry bb bass 6 but aria never got back , i guess these types of bass arent really that popular (thanks god)."

    (Thanks Jeremy)

"There have been some recent comments regarding the Fender Bass VI and Simon's Dick Knight bass.

I purchased the very 1st Fender Bass VI reissue. I also have an original '63 and a '65. All three sound different, however my REISSUE gets the closet tone to Robert's. Additionally, I have had NO problems with intonation or tuning. This VI is built like a tank, far superior to the Dano and Music Man competitors. You can eBay a nice reissue Bass VI for around $1100.00 to $1500.00

Regarding Simon's two Dick Knight basses: Dick Knight was a top end luthier in England. Dick passed away a few years ago so you will not be able to get a duplicate. Believe me, I have tried. Anyway, Dick Knight's son is alive and is a luthier, therefore you may want to approach him to make one for you. Be prepared to pay big bucks though. The easiest thing to do is purchase a Gibson EB-2D bass. This is the model the Dick Knight was patterned after with the exception of the EMG pickups. The EB-2D in really good condition should cost you around $1500.00. Or, simply buy a new Epiphone Jack Cassady bass in gold or black. Simon used one on the Dream Tour and Trilogy. You can get them around $600.00!"

  • More 6 string bass help:
  • "I sent an email to Perry a while back and this is what he said

    > i was wondering what kind of 6 string bass you were using on the dream tour,
    > i noticed it wasnt a fender bass VI like on the swing tour. just asking
    > joshua

    > Hello Joshua, The 6string bass I now use is one I designed. It's made by Aria -
    > they call it a "BB - something" (Bamonte Bass). A lot of people have asked me
    > about it but I really don't know if Aria still sell it.

"In case anyone wants to build their own Fender Bass VI, or have it built by someone, I wanted to send you the info about where I got the neck and body for mine. Pretty much all the other parts for a Bass VI are Fender Jaguar parts that you can get at http://www.musiciansfriend.com

So, USA Custom Guitars (http://www.usacustomguitars.com/usacg/) makes a "Baritone VI" which is a replica of a 1963 Fender Bass VI. They have great customer service and really know what they are doing. Tommy is a great guy. There are also a lot of helpful people on their forums that can answer any questions about what parts you need, what pickups they suggest etc... Particularly Alfred Spears. He can get you pointed in the right direction anyway. In the end, all the parts and the case for my Bass VI cost roughly $1200 which puts it at the same price point as a Rickenbacker Bass or Ernie Ball Bass.

Here are some pictures of the finished Bass VI:

"Just a quick reference for those of us too poor to afford anything really nice - a company called OLP who licenses ernie ball products, has a baritone/six string bass called the MM5. It's a 30 inch scale, which is vital for getting the E to E tuning nicely that most "baritones" made to string b to b or c to c provide, and it's got string through body as well, with 2 humbuckers, Currently, they are only available in blue, but you can get one from www.musiciansfriend.com for only $199!

    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=030709114755012038198125585025/g=home/search/detail/base_id/78683

    and

    http://www.olpguitars.com/

thought maybe someone might be interested in this low-cost option that still gets you the 30" scale..."

    (Thanks Gary Thrasher)

"Andy i believe said to buy the danelectro and not the fender reissues.

I'd highly disagree...i have both and the danelectro doesn't have the thickness in the sound as the fenders. It's weak and light sounding. As well as light body which causes the headstock to tilt down everychance it gets. So if you want one that sounds good get the fenders....if you just want one because you think it'd be cool to have....then get the danelectro."

    (Thanks Martin)

"Concerning the 6 string Bass : Musicman features a 6 string Bass on its catalogue : The Musicman Silouhete 6 string BASS

  • More 6 string bass info, for those looking to get one:
  • "Don't know if you've posted this page or not, but i figured i'd send it in. i'm in the market for a 6 string bass and your question from a few days ago prompted me to do some searching. this seems to be the most comprehensive thing i've seen so far. in the page it mentions robert..."and Robert Smith of The Cure. Listen e.g. to Smith's use of the Bass VI on several tracks on the Disintegration album from 1989, where the electric guitar only plays the off-beat chords, while the melody is played by Smith on a Bass VI. The result is a much spookier sound than provided by a guitar." anyway, i thought this might be of interest to all the guitar historians out there. if anyone can help point me in the right direction in terms of finding one for myself, i'd greatly appreciate it."

    (Thanks Erik)

"Just a word on the six string bass debate. anybody who wants one - buy the danelectro 6 - it's the only one on the market at the moment. as said below, it's around 300 dollars (like nothing !) - i paid 320 euros for mine. it's widely available on order. do not bother e-baying a fender reissue. the original bass VIs were all rather dodgy and if you get a good one, chances are it's had 100s of dollars worth of 'treatment' since and if it's really in mint condition, it'll be more tempramental (sic) than a reissue."

    (Thanks Andy)

  • Robert will be doing an interview with WBCN in Boston on friday:

  • Curespotting:
  • i'm just back from the cinema having enjoyed the fantastic german movie 'verschwende deine jugend', which plays around the high-time of the new wave era in germany. it's about a young newcomer band from munich and their manager, who desperately tries to organize a concert with german new wave heroes D.A.F. the cure are not only featured on the soundtrack, two songs are even played in the movie itself - 'fire in cairo' in it's entirety and about 3 minutes of 'a forest' (single version). one thing that was new to me: both songs were credited as 'licensed by urban def recordings' (not quite sure about the name), which seems to be a label of universal records germany.

  • A reminder that there is supposed to be an interview with Robert on France 2 tonight:
  • "Robert Smith has recorded a tv show last monday 23rd in Paris, and this show will be broadcasted on france2 channel saturday the 5th of july around 11pm french time! More info when avalaible here : http://france2.francetv.fr/emissions/toutlemondeenparle/home1.html "

Update: There seems to be some confusion over whether the interview will be broadcast tonight or not:

"The strange thing is that on some tv programs they mention Robert SMith as the main guest, and on some others, he isn't mentioned at all. But in this show, generally foreign guests are coming only for a few minutes. Many people are wondering in France if Robert Smith will really show up in tonight's tv show. We wonder if it is not next week instead (12july)..."

Here's the article from a French tv magazine and the translation:

(Thanks to Raziel from the French fan forum for the photo)

"On last 21st of june, because of the music fest in France, people didn't get their favorite tv show that evening. Thierry Ardisson compensates this with this evening show, inviting Robert Smith leader of The Cure band. Born in 1976, right in the middle of the punk era, the anglo-saxon band continues its out of the common run career since around thirty years. Along with the release (last month) of the double DVD Trilogy, recorded live in Berlin in Tempodrom last november 2002, when the band performed three of its best appreciated albums in their entirety and the most influencing as well (Porno 1982, Disin 1989 and Blood 2000), the singer looks back on this experience made of glorious times but also some failures, like in 1996 for the release of Wild Mood Swing."

  • New Cure article from Intro.de :
  • Cure become heavy for their forthcoming album

The Cure got themselfs a special producer. This week they started the studiowork together with Ross Robinson. Robinson is more known for heavier Sounds. He used to work with Acts such as Korn, Sepultura, Limp Bizkit, At The Drive-In, the blood brothers and Machine Head.

In february intro.de reported that The Cure have signed a contract with Robinsons Label I AM Recordings. The Album shall be released in spring 2004.

It's going to be easy for Cure-Fans until then. In November 2002 The Cure filmed "Trilogy - Live in Berlin". The Cure played 3 Sows in a row in the (german) capital [actually wrong, but that's what they've written!]. At each show "Pornography", "Disintegration", and "Bloodflowers" have been played in their entirety.

Smith said: "This particular live event was always an ambitious idea, and it took a lot of mental and physical preparation, but the end result has been more than worth it. For me the realization of the "Trilogy-Show" is not only the fulfillment of a dream, but also a tribute to this band line-up; the most dynamic, the most subtle, and the most powerful... certainly the best 'CURE' I've ever played in."

The Show is now released on DVD.

(Thanks to Kris for translating the article)

  • Yet another Cure tribute album coming soon? Robert involved? Yes, according to Totalrock.com:
  • MACHINE HEAD TAKE THE CURE?

Machine Head have been asked to contribute a song to an upcoming Cure tribute album. The band have been approached by none other than Cure mainman Robert Smith. Whether they’ll actually do a song for this remains to be seen.

Update: Ha! I've been told pretty emphatically that this is false. And as a source close to the band said, "this rumour is untrue, and it is ridiculous to suggest that Robert would contact artists directly regarding a tribute album to The Cure".

    (Thanks Rafe)

  • Can anyone help David with this Bass VI question?
  • "Is there anyone out there that has had a chance to try out Perry's Aria BB 1000 bass VI design vs the original 60's Fender Bass VI? I am really curious about how it plays. I have a Bass VI reissue but there are huge design flaws with it and I can't afford a $3-5,000 60's original. Can you get some cureheads that know, or Teddy himself (time permitting) to help me out with this. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if it was worth it. But for your info, the reissue VI has severe intonation problems. It obviously was either not scaled right or Fender skimped on the wood. Robert said that his reissue is mid-rangy and it is. So if anyone ever asks you about it, send them to me. Sidebar...Did you also notice that Robert used a different pick-up selection that he's never really used in the Trilogy shows, lots more treble (more tic-tac like). I like the old way myself."

Update: "This is for David and his Bass VI question. I have played the Aria Bass VI that Parry plays and it is somewhat close to the original (I have a 62 that was one of the first 40 ever made). It is a bit lighter and the sound is a bit thinner than the original. The guitar does not feel quite right to me, but I am very used to the Fender. All in all though, a much better 6 string than the re-issue which is utter crap. Not even close to the original. If money is an issue, go with the Aria over the re-issue, however, if you can scrounge the money together and find an original in good shape, it is worth every penny..."

    (Thanks Lee)

"The PBB6 was never actually built for general production by Aria despite a huge advertising campaign. We ordered one 2 yrs ago after the advert in guitarist. They took the cash then refunded it 4 months later saying that Japan had not finished the parts for some reason. I spoke to Perry about it recently and he said that he had never heard of anyone being able to get hold of one or indeed anything about it at all since the advertising. That's not to say that noone ever has. There was one prototype floating around in Andies Guitars in Tin Pan Alley for a while but I missed it. Our guitarist Jeremy managed to get hold of a Dan Electro 6 string which was beautiful and it was only 300 dollars in New York. There is also a copy called an Italia which I tried once which was very nice too but rather expensive. I resigned my self to putting heavier strings on my Jazz master and playing it on the bottom pickup with a huge mid sweep. I've just changed to the Line 6 Variax which has the software built in to Mimic the original Fender VI as well as various thinline Tele's and gretches not to mention some great accoustics. Perfect for the Cure's back catalogue all at the flick of a switch. Robert's Six sound change may be due to the fact that he used to put it through a peavy head with the bottom end rolled off ( he told me this) but it now goes through a Line Six modelling amp stack(Check triology and Re-Covered). Hope this helps..."

  • Curespotting:
  • " 99.1 in D.C. mentioned last week on their morning show that if Robert and Morrissey fought, who would win? They chose Morrissey as Smith would be too upset or gloomy to even want to fight. Obviously they don't know about the 14 explicit moments tour when every night was a fight against their own crowd! We know the true answer here!"

"Flea from rhcp mentions the cure as one of his favourite ever guitar driven rock bands...check out redhotchilipeppers.com, fleamail section."

  • Cure cover:
  • "This is not recent news (07/02), but just spotted it.There is an article on a greek music website which states some info about a Cure cover that the greek band Nexus was asked to make.It goes like this: "A well known German record company proposed to the greek band to do a cover song for a tribute album that is going to be released for the The Cure.Nexus asked to cover one of the "Japanese Dream" or "A few hours after this" , not famous songs that were just b-sides." I don't know if this has any connection to the "Jumping someone else's Jubilee" or if it is a whole new project.Sadly, I cannot give any feedback for the Nexus band as im not very familiar with it.One thing that I know though is that they are good friends with Wayne Hussey, who played guitar as a guest star in their last album. • Curespotting:
  • "I spotted Robert in connection with Blink 182 in this week's issue of UK's metal magazine "Kerrang": "Blink 182's drummer Travis Barker has revealed the trio's forthcoming album is to be called 'Use Your Erection I and II', in a ridiculous homage to Guns N'Roses. He also says that '80s goth pin-up the Cure's Robert Smith will appear on the album. 'The Robert Smith collaboration is a super downer,' he says.

As I was going through the Kerrang mag I spotted another cure reference further on. In an AFI interview Davey Havok's answer to "If you were marooned on a desert island, what would be the one album you'd have with you?" is "I'd take 'Starting at the Sea' by the Cure."

"A documentary on manufactured UK boy band “One True Voice: Pop Go The Rivals” shown on Sky One (Sunday 1.00pm – it’s the UK version of FOX) used the intro from “From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea” as a link track between segments. Most odd! "
