  • The Cure have been sampled again, this time by a French band called Rinocerose. Here's the report from Jerome:
  • Rinocerose cover image

"A french techno-pop band, called "Rinocerose", has released last year a new mini-album called "Le mobilier". The song "La guitaristic house organisation" contains a small sample of "Three" and the song "Machine pour les oreilles" contains a large sample of "In your house". This album is available in France only on CD (ref : TWI 1055 CD) and LP (ref : TWI 1055 DEP) on the label "PIAS France". "

  • Jörg has updated and redesigned The Last Remedy homepage. They now have 3 Cure songs (Pictures of You, Fascination St. and Just Like Heaven) from last summer's show in Wiesen in Real Audio. And check out his band while you're there. Good stuff.

  • And I would like to publicly thank Chris White and Roger O'Donnell for the very kind remarks about this website that they made in Curenews 20. They had no way of knowing, but it was a wonderful birthday surprise. Speaking of which, I celebrate(?) the big 3 0 today, and the Mardi Gras activities start this weekend (with 2 parades and the open house for Endymion & Bacchus), so unless there is some major news, I doubt there will be any updates until Monday. Have a great weekend and Go Broncos! : )

  • Jan. 25th

  • The Cure are mentioned in a USA Today article (1/22/98) about upcoming album releases. Here's what they had to say (Thanks Maat & Jeff):
  • "The Cure, One Million Virgins (the band's traditional working title). The release, coinciding with the Cure's 20th anniversary, bears the dark themes that shaded Pornography and Disintegration. Spring."

    Jan. 22nd

  • Another new song title has been revealed (Thanks Lars) :
  • "It hasn't been mentioned here yet and I think, for those who don't receive Cure News it may be an interesting information:

After "Fall", "Side by side" and "Just say yes", Robert confirmed another title of a new song from the forthcoming studio album. It will be "39". Here's the excerpt from Cure News 20, page 8:

Question: "Robert, what song describes you best ?"

    Robert: "39, a new one..."

  • From a post to Babble from Amethyst:
  • "I just wanted you to know that next saturday, january the 23rd there will be a Cure party in a pub called Heaven Club, in Madrid.

It will take place from 20:30, until 00:30.

    You will all be welcome!"

  • The Cure are mentioned briefly in the new issue of Guitar magazine (Thanks Midnight the Cure Cat Girl) :
  • "the cure is mentioned in an article in guitar magazine this month in an article on british bands... it's rather biased and puts the cure in the same sentence as culture club.... rather odd... it's a short article, only a half a page"

    Jan. 20th

  • The Cure will be featured on a new Punk/New Wave box set. Thanks to Chris White for this report:
  • "the cure's - 10:15 saturday night - will feature on the 5cd box set entitled "1,2,3,4" punk & new wave 1976-79 on 'universal' records. release date to be confirmed (feb/march). this collection also features: siouxsie & the banshees, the jam, blondie, sex pistols, clash, etc. and a 48 page colour booklet.

u.k's mojo magazine reviewed the album and notes the following: "of these 100 acts, perhaps only robert smith of the cure and paul weller of the jam are currently more than lukewarm in music industry terms. winners or losers, what matters is that they did it, and that there's something left that tells their story. here is that something, and what a joy it is."

  • The January issue of the French magazine Magic! has an article about The Cure's 20th anniversary. Here's the report from Muriel :
  • "Magic!", a French magazine (qualifying itself as "Modern-Pop magazine"), celebrates in its January issue (in the News section) the Cure's 20th anniversary. Let me quote and translate a few things : "On December 22nd 1978, release date of the misunderstood "Killing an Arab" on a tiny record label Small Wonder, one of the most important band of its generation -let's say the 80's- was making its first step in the record industry. The Cure, aka Robert Smith (or vice versa) has just celebrated its 20 years of existence, and has therefore crossed 3 decades and known almost everything". The magazine then explains how The Cure evolved throughout the years, reaching at the beginning of the 90's, a status of "influential band", especially over "91-92's shoegazers (Slowdive, Lush, Ride), Neorockers (Smashing Pumpkins, Placebo) and, more surprisingly, over trip hoppers (massive Attack, UNKLE/DJ Shadow...)"... Finally they conclude : "While a new album is announced to be released in march, it is already for sure that Robert Smith will leave a print in the modern music world. And not only because he wore huge white basket shoes..."

The article is illustrated by a couple of quite ugly drawings of a young and an older Robert Smith, a bottle of beer and a soccer ball...

  • Looks like The Cure will be on another French show (Thanks Rodolphe):
  • "Next week (28th january 99), we can see The Cure on the french satellite TV Chanel "M6Music" : This program's called "Canapé Rouge" and is diffused at 20:40 to 21:00 (french clock) and contains The Cure and other artists..."

And here are the details about the show (Thanks Muriel):

"Canape rouge" : is a weekly show about "the best and the worst of the 80's"... They only broadcast videos. Here is the list of the artists played that night (28 jan.)

    Mike Oldfield : Moonlight shadow
Sting et Eric Clapton : Its probably me
    Florent Pagny : Savoir aimer
Les Inconnus : Auteuil, Neuilly, Passy
The Cure : Close to me

The only question is to know what they are going to say about The Cure : Are they part of the best or the worst of the eighties ? But when you look at the other artists programmed, there's no doubt, definitely the best."

  • Italian artist Madaski covers "A Forest". Here's the story from Billboard magazine (1/23/99):
  • MADASKI'S TRADEMARK electronic distortion ‹found in the hardcore techno beats of his 1997 album "Distorta Diagnostica" (Distorted Diagnosis)‹has not been compromised on the Italian artist's latest album, "Da Shit Is Serious" (Blackout/Mercury). Released in September 1998, the album is spawning radio-friendly material: The single "Tonight," featuring vocals from Macka B, is an infectious drum'n'bass number with dancehall ragamuffin vibes that is garnering airplay points on Italy's top 40 stations. The album also includes a cover of the Cure's classic hit "A Forest," transformed with Euro-dance-style vocals but maintaining the dark edge of the original version. Madaski remains a leading member of Italian reggae pioneers Africa Unite, and the album features guest vocals from that band's Bunna and Raiss, vocalist with acclaimed Italian ambient trip-hop outfit Almamegretta.

  • A nice little surprise for those of us who watched the Fox pre-game show before the Vikings-Falcons game today. I'll let Adam explain:
  • "Today on Fox television, The Cure were profiled on the pre-game show of the vikings & falcons NFL conference finals. All due to the Minnesota Vikings running back Robert Smith. They asked Robert Smith & Leroy Hoard (both running backs for the Vikings) if they had ever heard of the cure & showed them pictures of the band. Both of them thinking the band members looked weird. As they showed clips of both running backs in the background playing was Picturess of You (Dub mix), Fascination St, Why Can't I Be You, Hot Hot Hot, and Never Enough."

To add to that, Terry Bradshaw was the interviewer and began the interview by asking Smith whether he knew about "the English rock band The Cure". Smith replied that he did know them, and then Bradshaw passed some photos of the band to Smith & Hoard. Some really nice photos of Robert and the band are flashed onscreen, and then Hoard asked Smith "when did you start wearing lipstick?". Then (as Adam reported) they showed a highlights package that used Cure songs as backing music. Unfortunately, Robert Smith and his Vikings lost today's game to the Atlanta Falcons. : (

  • From the Los Angeles Times (1/17/98):
  • The Cure, arguably the longest-lasting "alternative" band, is finishing a new album that will mark the Robert Smith-led group's 20th anniversary. It's due in the spring, with a tour planned to follow. (Thanks Nihility)

  • The official page has been updated with a brief message that the band are "back from holidays and hard at work again".

  • Jan. 5th

Hello again and Happy New Year to everyone! I hope everyone had a great holiday season. Now over the last month or so, I've received e-mails asking if I was closing the site, if I was ill (or dead), or if I had run off to get married (not just yet). Well none of that is true. I've simply been enjoying the holidays with the love of my life and updating the website (when there really hasn't been any major news) has not been my top priority. Thanks for sticking with us, and I promise that the website will be returning to normal over the next few weeks. It's just a very slow time of the year for news. Just be patient and we'll all have a brand new Cure single, album, and tour soon. Now on to catching up with the news over the last month or so!

  • Here's what SonicNet had to say about the release date of the new album (from an article about anticipated albums of 1999):
  • "Twenty years after British rockers The Cure released their debut LP, they'll return with a June release"

    (Thanks Mike & Devin)

  • VH1 has included The Cure in one of their "Where are they now" specials. Here's a report from George:
  • "Just wanted to let you know that VH1 ran a "where are they now" segment on the Cure.  They called the cure an 80's keyboard band and showed some clips of pictures of you, Just Like heaven live ( MTV Music Awards) a little bit of interviews with Robert and Perry, and showed stills of the various incarnations of the band through out the years.  It was fairly cool and lasted maybe 2 1/2 mins."

The special will be repeated tonight (Jan. 5th) at 8pm eastern & pacific / 7pm central and again on Saturday (Jan. 9th) at 2pm eastern & pacific / 1pm central and 10pm eastern & pacific / 9pm central.
