Jan. 31st

  • A source spoke to Robert last week and provided us with this update on the status of some of the things being discussed for the near future:
  • New Album - The band is on holiday now but they will start recording next month, working on some new ideas and if something good comes out of that, they will eventually release it. But only if they think it works. Everyone is said to be very excited and they really want to record something.

Live Shows in 2001 - They would like to do some festivals this year, but it all depends on how the recording sessions go.

Dream Tour Live CD's - There are legal problems with Elektra, that's why nothing has come out yet , but they have finally agreed to let out a compilation of the best versions of songs from the tour, so Robert has been listening to quite a lot of Dream Tour material to make selections. Still no word on exactly when we can look for it to be released.

Please remember that all of this is tentative and just because these things are being discussed now doesn't mean they are set in stone. This is only meant as a snapshot of where a few of their current projects stand as of late January. Again, the recording sessions are key. If they go well, a lot of interesting things MIGHT happen, if not, then plans will most likely change. Just keep those fingers and toes crossed next month.

  • 'Pirate Ships' is up and running at the official site.

  • A very Happy Birthday to Jason Cooper today. Hope it's a great one.

  • Cure covers:
  • "Quite interesting, I was at a small club in NJ checking out some local bands. A band called the Family Jewels, a quirky pop act, ala Talking Heads, Devo, They Might Be Giants, dedicated A Forest, to a friend in the audience. They had an electronic drum kit, which sounded exactly like the original Cure version. It sounded really good. I spoke to a band member afterwards. He said the show was taped, and they may put the Forest cover on the web. I'll keep you posted."

    (Thanks Miller)

    From Side-line:

    Love Like Blood's love-affair

"Chronology of a love-affair", the new album by Love Like Blood, will be released on March 5th, 2001. The intention to record Goth classics of the past 20 years was to change the usual album, tour, album, tour rotation after more than 10 years. Splitting the 10 years into four "half-decades" and to select just four important bands for each period was the most difficult decision for the band. Therefore they collected the bands that represented the scene the most in these periods, even if the chosen songs were recorded a couple of years earlier or later. The tracklisting includes The Cure's "A strange day", Bauhaus' "She's in parties", Joy Division's "Decades" and lots more.

    (Thanks Bernard)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Just saw it on vh1's show called "fan club" during the no doubt feature.

the fan had been talking on camera about meeting no doubt backstage and how cool and normal they were--then they cut to the drummer/adrian who talked about how they (no doubt) had all gone to see the cure and had been invited backstage to meet the band, but that he decided not to because "robert is such an icon."

he explained in a way that seemed very similar to the way robert talked about meeting his own idols like david bowie....and how you might not wanna meet your idols and ruin the way you think about them."

    (Thanks Richard)

"Hi there, last night there was a show on Belgian television called mannen op de rand van een zenuwinzinking or men on the edge of a nerveous breakdown. this is the most popular show on tv at the moment and yesterday it was about the fact that men don't show there feelings. well I guess it wasn't really suprising about but they played quite a long piece of boys don't cry at the end credits. always nice to hear."

    (Thanks Christoph)

  • A 'Pirate Ships' update - We've had reports that the MP3 was on the site last night but then taken down again. I'm not sure when or if it will appear again, but if you missed it, One Hundred Years (the Italian fan club website) has it in their news section. I downloaded it this morning and the file is complete, works fine with Winamp and sounds great! Also, the song was written by Wendy Waldman (not Walden).

  • TWEC will be posting a Cure webcast this sunday, Jan. 28th and putting all of their Cure stuff on sale as well. Not positive about this, but the webcast will probably be the New York promo show from Feb. 28th, 2000. So if you're not interested in watching the Giants destroy the Ravens, here's an alternative for you. : )

  • A Curiosity update:
  • "CURIOSITY the belgian cure tribute will play live in HEIDELBERG (Germany) at the Schwimmbad Music Club on saturday 3th february

If you want information about the bus organized from Liège to go to Heidelberg, mail quickly to: vincent.crepin@swing.be

The band will play in Belgium again after Germany and will play for an exceptional show in Poland on the 21th april (Robert Smith's birthay party)

But before, see you in Heidelberg..."

  • Cure covers:
  • "Hey, just wanted to say that I got to see a kickass band called The Davenports in Murfreesboro, TN. In the middle of their second set they played a killer cover of "Just Like Heaven". Nobody was on the dance floor before they played it, but during they had a lot of people dancing. Thats just what I needed for my Cure fix tonight! :) "

    (Thanks Dan)

  • Curespotting:
  • "eMpTyV has been airing, ad nauseum as usual, a program about rejected audition videos for Road Rules, The Real World, and Fanatic wherein they show a weird little guy with a rather groovey Cure shirt sporting a large picture of Robert standing in front of a wall covered by little photos of Mr. Smith. They just show it for a second. The Cure-fan was apparently wanting to meet The Cure in a Fanatic episode. He was trying to say what a powerful influence they'd had on his life, but fumbles up his words a bit. Kind of funny, but not as good as the middle-aged, breakdancing Britney Spears fan knocking over shit in his living room. Dude, get a life."

    (Thanks Jeff)

"Today while sick at home, I turned on MTV2. To my wonderous surprise they began to play "Close To Me (remix)" It was about 7:45 a.m., the happiest morning I ever had! God Bless mtv2 (not the regular MTV though!)"

    (Thanks KellyO)

"I was at work listening to the radio, and I heard The Cure.......at Polyesters. I was Freaking.. ( I work in cosmetics, so everyone was staring) I crouch down to hear more, what it was, was a Cure tribute night at a club.. And they said, " When was the last time you put on that black eye shadow, red lipstick, and teased your hair really big??" I was unable to go that night since I had to work early... :( But I hope others had fun..."

    (Thanks Jennie)

  • The official website has been updated with news of a Disintegration session outtake that Robert recently found. It's a song called Pirate Ships by Wendy Waldman, and there should be an MP3 of it on the website very soon.

  • Jan. 19th

  • There's an interview with Lol on the Rock Star Entertainment website.
  • (Thanks Paul)

  • Fusae has updated her site with some nice photos and info about the Rock Masters tv show that recently aired in Japan.

  • The Cure make the Top 10 in Nashville:
  • "The Cure were placed number 7 on the top 100 of the year on the radio station 100.1, also ,know as Lightning 100.....they were number 7 for the song "maybe someday." it was quite impressive seeing them ahead of bands like u2, creed (ugh, i hate them), and other bands the public seems to like more.....maybe there are more cure fans than i thought.."

    (Thanks Adam)

  • A video for World In My Eyes? Apparently so:
  • "Well, I just wanted to let you know that last night, 2 a.m., I saw on an italian music tv station (MuchMusic) the video of World in my eyes (Cure version)!!!! It has been done by an italian guy (Sebastiano Festa), who took the song and made a pretty video with quick images of fishes, eels, spermatozoa etc on a blue screen. I'm sure this isn't an original Cure video, but it's funny anyway!!!

This man, Sebastiano, did the same thing with Radiohead song "Idioteque", making a very cool video with images from 1st, 2nd world war, Vietnam war etc. "

    (Thanks Francesco)

And here's a review of their show in Dublin:

"I feel I have to write to you to let people know what a fantastic time I had this weekend in Dublin. Firstly an apology to everyone that told me to go and check out The Cureheads whilst on vacation in Dublin. I have long been a hater of tribute bands to anyone especially my Beloved Cure. So I did tell a lot of you to go to hell in no uncertain terms. Arriving off the plane in Dublin on Friday night I went to a local alternative bar to find out what to do that weekend.

I was told that on the saturday there was normally a club for goths & cureheads but it had been cancelled as The Cureheads were in town & everyone would be going to that instead. I was mighty angry that these "frauds" had ruined my vacation in Dublin but on Saturday afternoon I met two Irish Goth Guys Shamus & Sean who got me absoloutely off my face on Guiness & whiskey....to cut a long story short I ended up at The Olympia Theatre ... I was ready to Heckle & shout at them until they shuffled on stage turned around and literally threw Fasination Street at us...there was nothing I could do as they went straight into an absoloutely amazing set.

By the time they got to pictures of you I was standing on my seat screaming like a little girl at a Britney Spears concert the place just turned crazy for 2 hours. They were fantastic. They didnt seem to think they WERE the Cure they just played LIKE the Cure... The Singer sounded just like Robert except his voice started to go towards the end during PUSH but it didnt matter.. The Irish Curefans seemed to really take the Cureheads to Their Hearts..maybe it's a message that The Cure should get off their arses and get over there.

Can you believe I joined the other Cureheads at the stage door & even tried to get a poster signed.. I met the singer very briefly who thanked me for coming but refused to sign my poster saying that "It didnt feel quite right"... I also met the bass player who gave me a CDROM of the last concert they had played in Ireland.

I went home with a load of Irish Cureheads to a party in somebodies house...all in all I had a great weekend. Apparently The Cureheads are coming to The USA give them a chance guys you wont regret it. "

    (Thanks John)

  • For those fans who enjoyed Ekova (opening act for the French Dream Tour), they have a new album out now entitled "Space Lullabies".
  • (Thanks Bruno)

  • Cure covers:
  • "Just heard the tale end of a cover of "Love Song" by a band called Waterface. Female vocals, semi-heavy guitars I think. From what the dj said, they're from my town (Prescott, Az), and are playing here Friday, so I'll probably go check them out and see how they are, and of course report back here. It kinda blew me away to hear that song when my alarm went off this morning, yet not by Robert & Co."

    (Thanks rODenT)

  • Curespotting:
  • "the austrian magazin libro jounal have asked french elektro-pop-phenominen air to name their 10 most loved records ... and the cure's seventeen seconds has made a nr. 8 ranking. their comment about the album: the perfect record for being sad (!!?) the other records were of s. gainsbourg, beatles, beach boys, bashung, j-j perry, prince, kraftwerk, stevie wonder and iggy pop."

    (Thanks Patrick)

"I was watching a programme the other night on BBC America called 'Monarch Of The Glen'. It is about a man who learns he is the actual owner and Laird of his childhood home, a estate in Scotland, etc. etc. Anyway, when he comes home and goes into his old bedroom there are posters plastered all over the walls and... sure enough amongst Joy Division (the first that caught my eye), The Clash and probably an unfathomable amount of other great bands I spotted 'the old man' from the Staring At The Sea' album. Ah hem, hence a CURE poster. Immediately, I thought of the character "Ooh, I like him! He certainly is or was a smart bloke!" Pathetic as it sounds, I have to say it really made my day!"

    (Thanks Keisha)

"There is a program on ESPN called NHL2Night that has this guy John Buccigross on it. He makes music related comparisons to hockey players and teams all of the time. Last night, January 17 he said, "What Robert Smith is to the Cure, Jere Lehtinen is to the Stars." I've been waiting for him to make a Cure comment for a long time and he finally did!"

    (Thanks Melissa)

"I work for Bloomingdale's in Manhattan, and have had three Curespottings there in the past year. Today I walked into the store and they were playing The Perfect Girl on the main floor. Recently, in the men's department, they were showing a video of Just Like Heaven (recorded live at a concert) on one of the tv monitors. Last summer, they also had a Cure tshirt in the store front window. They were featuring a new line of tshirts where the designer took old tshirts and restyled them. They had a lot of "rock and roll" tshirts along with a Galore tshirt (the one with the baby & ice cream cone - the sleeves were cut off and it had leopard trim and rhinestones - it was about $150!). It looks like I'm not the only one at Bloomingdale's who loves The Cure..."

    (Thanks Mary)

"It was just a short blip, and the bass was cranked so all you could hear through the bass drum was the keyboard ringing, but Just Like Heaven was played between play stoppage and a face off at the San Jose Arena (The Shark Tank) when the Sharks played the Buffalo Sabers on January 9th. Ahhh...if only they showed Robert on the jumbo-tron wearing the Sharks jersey he wore on the Swing Tour stop at The Tank."

    (Thanks Mike)

"This is a spotting from years back, but I was reminded of it the other day and think it may be one not many people would know of. In Robert Newman's (the comedian who invited Robert to appear on the Mary Whitehouse Experience and himself appears in the video for The 13th as the TV presenter) first novel Dependance Day, the second chapter begins with the line "The very first time I saw your face I thought of a story and rushed to reach the end too soon", which is of course from Primary. The two Roberts were apparently good friends for some time, and appear to be great fans of each others work!"

    (Thanks CS)

  • Cure on Casey Kasem compilation:
  • "Don't know if you already reported this on your site yet, but just in case you didn't know, Warner released a compilation titled "Casey Kasem's Top 10 Through The...". It is a 5-disc set, with each disc being from a different decade, sequentially starting with the 50's. The Cure's "Lovesong" appears on disc 4, the 80's disc. It is track 9."

    (Thanks Moe)

  • More "Best of 2000" results:
  • "Up until November last year I worked for Record Collector magazine in the UK and before I left I chose Bloodflowers as one of my albums of the year. The list is in this month's issue (Jan 2001). The list is not ranked in order of greatness at all, but it was definitely a highlight."

    (Thanks Martin)

"Over New Year's weekend, the local radio station here in Utah, X96, played the top fifty songs of the year 2000. The Cure's 'Maybe Someday' was number 40. I was actually quite surprised. In my opinion, the song should have been number one, but hey, I didn't make the list. "

    (Thanks Treeweel)

"This morning I was listening to radio, trying to find a decent one, when I was lucky to hear the whole song Maybe Someday - radio mix, on radio Comercial, Portugal. And to my surprise, they were playing their 2000 best, songs and MS was number 33. Good!"

    (Thanks Claudio)

"edge102, an "alternative" radio station in toronto had a "top 102 of 2000" countdown. bloodflowers was voted in number 85, losing to bands like kitty, papa roach, limp bizkit and so on. radiohead's kid a was a the top of that list. good that they were on the list... but come now....."

    (Thanks Caro)

  • I've been getting a lot of e-mails about asking about what has happened to Babble, and since I haven't subscribed to it in over a year, I have no idea. If anyone knows what the problem is, please let me know. Thanks.

  • Curespotting:
  • "On the 1st of January 2001, in the Polish Television TVN, during the quiz: 'Milionaires' (or, 'Who wants to be a Milionaire') there was a question:

Who is the singer in Type O-Negative?

A Peter Steele B ROBERT SMITH

C Trent Reznor D Andrew Eldritch

The question was for 250 000 Polish zloty, which is about 62 thousand$ (62000$). The only person the middle-aged participant 'heard about' was Robert, so he answerd: 'Robert Smith'...... This wasn't the right answer....

I remember in march'1999, in Polish Television TVP2, during the quiz 'Jeopardy' ( in Poland called 'Va banque') there was a question 'Who is the singer in The Cure'. This question was in the second part of the game and was quite expensive."

    (Thanks Tais)

"on thursday january 4th TVN (national television of Chile) broadcasted the TV show "informe especial" ("special report"), that night they showed 2 reports: "playboy world" and "hackers". in the report about hackers they played 3 cure's songs in the background: why can't i be you, high, and friday i'm in love."

    (Thanks Cristian)

"During Mtv's CRIBS they showed the house of one of the guitar players of the Foo Fighters, the guitarist said there was a room dedicated to 80's Legends and they showed a couple of pics of Robert Smith, Peter Gabriel and Bono."

    (Thanks Eric B.)

"(from bloodflowers hysteria last year): i attended an hmv interview where the smashing pumpkins were doing an autograph session for machina (march 2000). this is paraphrased of course, but i heard over the loud speakers the interviewer ask billy: "so, what's next in store for the smashing pumpkins?"

(billy) "i dunno, i think we're going to wait and see what the cure's doing first."

(insert cheers from the audience here)

"have you heard their new album? great, isn't it?"

(billy) "oh, definately, actually in think the cure are one of the best bands in the world...."

and we certainly agree mr. corgan :)"

    (Thanks Caro)

"On KWOD, our local (Sacramento CA) "alternative" radio station the afternoon DJ just finished playing a block of Cure when he mentioned how "hard-core" Cure fans were-- how Metallica fans weren't even close and how some girl called up earlier talking about the way she decorates her Christmas tree to look like Robert Smith. How the heck one would do this I have no idea..."

    (Thanks Tigger)

"A guy at work has just purchased a new pair of Dr. Martens (From Shelleys, Oxford Circus, London)and was given with them a book on the history of DMs. The book is full of great colour photos of mostly celebritys wearing their DMs including a picture of the Cure in concert. The photo is taken from Simon's side of the stage and shows Simon, Robert and Roger. The caption says "The Cure formed back in 1978, and although several of the key band members did not actually wear DM's - many preferred pointed suede boots or in Robert Smith's case, oversized tongues on white basketball boots - Simon Gallup frequently wore knee-high Docs."

    (Thanks Michael)

"On the 22 of December, after a hellishly long day of travel by airplane (Paris to Madrid), metro (Barajas Airport to Chamartin Station), and train (Chamartin Station to the station in Zaragoza), I stepped on Zaragoza's bus 120, which goes from the Zaragoza train station to the home of the illustrious J. Randolph Dixon, American student abroad; and the driver of this bus had his radio turned on to some station that was playing, between Rosana and the Gypsy Kings, a song we all know and love, "Inbetween Days." An experience like that will make any backpack feel like it's full of nothing but air, or at worst cotton candy."

    (Thanks Scott)

  • What better way to start off the new year than with this - Bloodflowers has been nominated for a Grammy award in the Best Alternative Music Album catagory. They will be up against Fiona Apple, Beck, Radiohead and Paul McCartney(!?!?). Congratulations to the band and best of luck winning the award. Now if only they could perform live at the show. : )
  • (Thanks Jennifer)

  • Some more info on how The Cure fared in the year end "best of" polls:

    (Thanks Bill)

    Rolling Stone (Germany):

    Best album: 11th place

    Best Band: 12th

    Best Live Act: 10th

    Best album (critic´s choice): 10th"

    Rolling Stone (US):

  • Also, The Cure's cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart has made the Jam! music Anti-Hit List.

  • Cure covers:
  • "the brazilian band Pato Fu (Pahto Foo © roger) did a cover of Just Like Heaven "unplugged", and it is available on their site, http://www.patofu.com.br , "SOM" section. The site is in portuguese, but it's easy to find it there... anyway, here is the direct link http://patofu.iserver.net/real/Just_Like_Heaven.ram

This version is not as funny as the one played at Luau MTV, where the singer tells that they always play it wrong, mostly when it comes to the F# chord part... and when they play it, they miss it again... very funny... this one is a better played version (no wrong notes at all!), and the singer warns the band when it's time to play the F# chord part..."

    (Thanks Baco)

  • Curespotting:
  • "For those in the Chicago area. There is a new radio station called -The Zone- It is at 94.7 It is an 80's station. Sometimes they play stuff from the early 90's but it is all from 80's artists. It has only been running for about a month but it is excellent. They play lots of U2, B-52's, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie and every time I turn it on I am treated to The Cure. I have never heard a DJ on this station either. Which means unlike all the other Chicago stations they actually have time to play music. So check it out. "

    (Thanks Matthew)

"Well, there is this TV-show in Sweden called "Expedition Robinson", which is about some people who tries to survive on an island. The show is rubbish but last Saturday they surprised me by palying Treasure in the background. "

    (Thanks Peter)

"In the Christmas issue (Dec 20-Jan 2)of Melody Maker, there´s two Cure mentions:

(page 99)In an interview with Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, he was asked about his most decadent moment of the year, and this was the answer: "Erm...I played pool with The Cure´s Robert Smith in Australia! [at the Livid Festival] Does that count? ...it´s pretty cool! Who won? I did! Several times!... he´s [Robert]a happy camper. He´s cool."

second one: (page 100-101)interview with producer Ross Robinson (Limp Bizkit, Deftones, Korn, At the Drive-In, etc.) when asked about his dream producing job, who would it be? "Oh, The Cure. No question. They´re always in the back of my mind. Robert Smith´s vocal lines and melody lines with the guitars - they´re always there. You can hear them all over the first Korn record, they´re everywhere!" and on picked production tricks from them: "Mic delays and stuff like that - just amazing. And I learned how to put melody in. Coming from the metal world, I´d be straight linear, like this (holds arms together straight out in front of him), but having that as one of my main influences, there´s always been cool flowing melodies over things that pull your heart when you hear it and you feel it go, "Kuff!" and it opens something up. It´s just a major influence. Snare patterns! You hear Cure snare patterns all over records I do (laughs). If I walked in and saw Cure road cases where I was recording, that´s when I would stop. I´d be thinking, `With The Cure, I can be done with this [job]now.´ That would be it. Finished."

    (Thanks Liza)

"Today, 30 th December 2000, has sounded the song "Boys don't cry", in a cinema program in Canal + (Spain), during a report of the film "Boys don't cry". "

    (Thanks Pau)

"Cure mentied in article comparing Pumpkins first album Gish to Cure-style indie rock

"The seven songs are rickety Cure-style indie rock with teasing hints of the double-guitar howl that would bloom on the Pumpkins' 1991 debut album, Gish. "

    (Thanks Dave)

"This isnt a big one but on the blink 182 dvd there is a picture of robert during one of the videos, or one of the sections."

    (Thanks Josh)

"from the year end Rolling Stone magazine [RS858/859], the Cure are mentioned in the Rock 'n Roll Year 2000 In Review. Under Random News (page 45; for the month of February), it reads:

"British mope-rockers the CURE release Bloodflowers. Frontman Robert Smith says the album may be the group's last, bringing the band to a grand total of something like five 'last' records."

    (Thanks Jason)

"This is not important at all, still I thought I'd let you know this (if I can remember it correctly; I noted everything but then lost the paper)...

In the afternoon of wednesday 20.10.2000 (at around 4.00pm I think), french radio France Inter played 'why can't I be you?' (strange how as soon as you hear the firsts few notes of a Cure track on the radio you just feel much happier). Then, the host, who seemed to appreciate the band, made a brief speech saying this track was issued from the double orange album from 1987 Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, that also included 'just like heaven' (I think he mentionned 'Les Enfants du Rock'), and that this album was like a patchwork, a recapitulation of all the previous musical styles of THE CURE, and that it was a really good album... (I don't want to write something he didn't say but it was really something close to that).

Then, as a Christmas present, my little cousin (7) recieved a CD-rom titled 'Le Fabuleux Voyage de l'Oncle Ernest' ('The fabulous Journey of Uncle Ernest', an adventure game in which you need to find hints to discover a treasure or something like that, by emme editions, Paris - emme.com), and when you open the CD-rom on your computer, it plays something really very close to the firsts few notes of the intro of 'stange attraction'; I didn't have WMS with me to compare the two but it sounded exactly like 'strange a'. Weird.

Best Wishes to all Cure fans around the world, to THE CURE, and to you two Craig and Nadine, thanks for providing us with 'A Chain Of Flowers'. Happy New Year to you all."

    (Thanks Fabien G.)
