Topic: What do you think of the video for 'The End of the World'
"I really appreciate the new video. But the
first think that came in my mind was the work that the famous
french director "Michel Gondry" as been doing
during these years. Especially the work he did with Bjork on 2
video : Bachelorette (the ground covers climbing
very fast and covering everything) and Human Behaviour.
But everyone is going to be able to see any
influence. The general atmosphere is really good. Perfect to begin
this new album. And I have to adnit that I
prefer this song now that I've seen this video. What could I ask
more???"
- Martin Gauthier
"One of my favourite Cure videos!! The film
fits perfectly the music and creates the same Cure-ishly odd
atmosphere, which can be enjoyed for example
in Close to Me or The Caterpillar, but nevertheless it’s a bit
different. Its relation to these videos is
the same of Disintegration to Pornography, in the sense that it’s more
mature, reasoned and self-confident and somehow
less spontaneous. I could spot some references to past
videoclips/songs too, as it was also in the
video for Never Enough (the poster of Boys don’t Cry, but also Lullaby,
and possibly the Smith-Gallup siamese twins?)
or in the one for Wrong Number (don’t “the flashes of colour”
recall the Inbetween Days video?) For istance:
- Robert in bed: Lullaby (and the bedsheets
go in the direction where the spiderman once was, at the corner where
the ceiling and the walls meet)
- Robert in the narrow room: Never Enough
(especially as he stays on his knees, and you can see the same “false
perspective”)
- Jason with the telephon: Wrong Number (and
the bird with the worm in its beak? “A not so early bird is the only
way for her to get her worm”...)
- The fading flowers: Bloodflowers (“Always
fade, always die...”)
What I liked best:
- The fading flowers
- Perry’s eyes movements and walking in balance;
- As Robert comes back into the house, the
Mary Poppins-like putting in order thing and his doubting expression;
- The strange course of the sugar: it reminds
me of an event in One Hundred Years of Solitude;
- Robert’s typical hand movements and facial
expressions!"

"I must say that the video has very much changed
my appreciation for the song. The cure have always been a
very visual band for me, and this is a great
addition to the song. I liked the colours, and I liked the animation
bits. This video reminds me of
the instructions Robert had for TimPope early on, which was to always avoid
making the cure look cool. There is
alot of poking fun at their image in this, at Robert's notorious look,
mannerisms and grimaces, the disintegration
themes, (which are still fun, but made better by the parody). The
stop motion objects remind me of the appliances
on the Three imaginary boys cover - a drive for an imageless
image. the bedsheets from lullaby, the cramped
hall of Never enough and Close to me, a shadow of Robert as in
Boys don't cry . What is the photograph
of Perry holds up? looks like the bloodflower cover pic...
Anyway, the cure know they've aged, and self
reference is now refreshing."
- Erik Howarth
"I loved this video with all the stop-start
animation. It doesn't bother me that the video focuses on Robert.
Realistically, the line-up for The Cure has
changed so frequently over the years that The Cure pretty much is
Robert. He writes the songs and sings all
the vocals, so it would seem natural for a video to focus mostly on him.
My interpretation of the song is that he is
going to love her until the End of The World, or perhaps even beyond
then. I think it's a beautiful song and the
video is a great fit!"
- Tempest
"Atmosphere in the video suits the cure perfectly
well. It reminds me a lot of David Lynch movies; especially
the opening scene seems to come straight out
of "Blue Velvet" and I saw some creepy "Twin Peaks" stuff as
well. Anyway great video; looking forward
to this bonus DVD!!"
- Luuk
"My 6yo (who is nearly as obsessive a fan as
his mommy) loves the new video. His interpretation of the meaning
of the song is "It's the end of the world
that he can be hers." Interesting.
But what does mommy think? Well, I agree
with the comment that it feels like we've seen this before, in some
ways at least. I could do without the
toothpaste/brush scene, for instance. Animating inanimate objects
just for
the sake of animating inanimate objects...
doesn't mean anything or add much. At least most of the animation
adds to the theme of destruction (or, dare
I say, disintegration), but some just seems there as filler (the
aforementioned toothbrush), like, "hey, look
what we can do with stop-motion".
I wasn't previously familiar with Sigismondi's
work and so I looked into what she's done. This really seems quite
tame for her. "Beautiful People" is
much creepier... of course it's a creepier song, but the whole TEOTW video
does seem rather less disturbing than she's
renowned for.
That being said, anything that allows me the opportunity to watch Robert writhing about on the floor... *ahem*
I must say I also like the little snarl he
does when he says "Love" in the hallway, reminiscent of his facial
expressions in "Lovecats" for instance, and
so verrry juicy...
So my reaction is mixed, I'm not all "BEST
VIDEO EVVVRRR" but it's enjoyable, certainly better than some
of their other output and hopefully it will
do well on the video stations."

"We finally got a chance to watch it, and we
honestly LOVE it. there are so many interesting elements in it, and it
moves along so perfectly with the song. someone
else said they had the feeling they had seen it before -- i did,
too, but i instantly knew why i felt that
way, it reminded me of the old stop-motion style of a couple of my favorite
talking heads videos, 'and she was' and 'road
to nowhere' -- those were awesome classics, and i think TEOTW is
going to be one as well. i completely agree
with you on the robert to band ratio, it really does work in this case.
the rest of the band are funny enough in their
little bits -- love simon picking up the bike, perry walking on the wall,
etc.... too funny. another thing that i really
liked about the video is that for once, the ending of the song didn't
bother me, in fact, it really worked that
the high note at the end kind of went off into this alien frequency...
it fit
the surreal feel of the whole thing.
- two thumbs way up from jewel and diana in
arizona!
"I'd like to tell my opinion about the video:
I think it's great! Really! One of the best they've ever done (together
with Lullaby, Never enough, Close to me and
Let's go to bed...). Really good! I like the colours used, in
particular..."
- Francesco
" Oaow ! We've seen the video of "The End Of The World" 5 times non-stop !!!
It's a really REALLY GOOD Cure video. An excellent
one, maybe one of the best Cure ever done for long !!!
We're really happy about this video, we think
it could restart a huge Curemania. Congratulation to Robert and
Floria Sigismondi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We hope they'll working a long time together
because she really understood the whole Cure spirit and hers is
really compatible with it ! We think working
with Floria is one of the 3 best ideas Robert had in The Cure carreer
(the others were singing and working with
Tim Pope).
We think the idea to see the rest of the group
in the end is really good too. It's like they're looking for Robert for
a while. We love the way anything move, it's
such funny !!! And to see two Roberts is a really strange idea, a
very good one !!!
It's the end of his world, so it's pretty logical
that the others appear late in the video. This clip is one of those we
want to see again and again and again ....
AND AGAIN !
VERY GREAT STUFF !!!!!"
- Noreleïs & Annydrin (Nico) from
the Falling Angels fanzine
"It's shit! it reminds me of an exercise
in technology some college kid is doing for school--"look at all the
amazing things i learned! do i get an
A?". is this rob's concept? i highly doubt it. it seems
to me that this
is a bid to win some type of award to generate
more buzz. and is rob in jeopardy of becoming bono? now that's
really what this reminds me of--a beautiful
day--when they took bono to the airport and said "do bono things".
kinda the same concept, no?"
- Shawn Higgins
"Blimey !
I have to see that this is by far the coolest
video The Cure have ever done (so far...). It seems like a pretty
big
deal for folks that the other 80% of the band
aren't in the video much but I honestly think that'll only be a
problem to people who don't know much about
the band, as it will just reinforce the tired perception that The
Cure is one person. Besides, as Craig
says, the video works as it is so no point complaining. If the band
were in
the video loads more there wouldn't have been
enough time to "tell the story" as it were.
Aside from that, well done to the residents
of Toronto for being so understanding during the demolition of their
houses, and I hope the band put everything
back where they had found it."
- Dave Ace
"Just watched the new video through, courtesy
of a web download and I'm blown away. This is one of the best
ever cure videos and is actually a fantastic
piece of film in it's own right. Like all good music videos, it gives a
totally new level of appreciation to the song.
It's not about 'The End of the World', it's about 'The End of MY
World', really excellent stuff.
It's becoming increasingly obvious that Geffen
is putting serious cash behind Robert and the boys - that doesn't
look like a cheap video, especially when you
compare it to the previous two - cut here and just say yes - both of
which look like they were made for half nothing
compared to this masterpiece. This is the first thing the cure have
done for years that is striking the same chords
with me that my first exposure to them did with Kiss Me and
Disintegration when I was a teenager. "
- Alex Meehan
"The video is great (except the lack of band
scenes), but im just glad their doing videos again. i was dissapointed
with the no videos for bloodflowers thing."
- Joshua Wilcox
"I liked it a lot. I would have liked to see
more of the band, too, but a lot of Robert is always good. :) The part
in
the closet reminded me of the Never Enough
video. "
- Jennifer Rutherford
"What more impressed me were the special effects,
I liked the idea so much, I prefer a video where Robert acts
out more than the rest of the band. I had
desire of seeing a video where didn´t see to the band playing but
acting.
The part where the house falls into pieces
and Robert coming out & in is for me the best of the whole video.
Congratulations to The CURE & Floria Sigismondi
for this ASTONISHING work. Undoubtedly one of the best
videos of their career."
- Jorge Luna
"loved it, but as you said, too much bobert
and not enough of the boys. loved the part where boberts hand gets
stuck in the ice. "
- Stephanie
"Not really sure how I felt about it. My boyfriend
said he feels like he's seen it before. I tend to agree. There
were elements I really liked (e.g. Robert
in the narrow hallway, the doll), but I think the stop-motion thing kinda
put me off. The video had a dark feel to it,
but the stop-motion made it seem a bit corney. I think I would have
enjoyed it more without that. And I agree
with you - not enough band! I started getting into it when the rest of
the
band showed up. Is Jason wearing eyeshadow
now?"
- Steve
"I just saw the video for TEOTW and I thought
it was pretty interesting how the special effects around the house
and movement of the video went. It reminded
me of watching a tool video. The video also reminded me of the
lullaby video in some instances like Robert
in the bed covering himself with the sheets. Overall it was a cool
video."
- Esmir
"I thought it was awesome! I love Sigismondi's
work, the weird-stop motion stuff, and I was very impressed by
the way the video turned out. Except for the
lack
of band, but that can be forgiven for a video as neat as the one
that turned out."
- Abby
"I thought it was the best video by the cure
in a long time. I hope it gets lots of play and that they make more
videos from the new album!"
- Chris
"Just saw the new video and had to let you
know it was amazing!!! One of my favorite Cure videos of all time.
Robert looked really cool, as did the rest
of the band. It was nice to see the focus of the video was on Robert
mostly. And the style was so different from
anything the band has ever done before! AMAZING!"
