  • From Wall of Sound :
  • Fan Takes the Cure for $75,000

It must feel just like heaven for a zealous (former?) Cure fan who was granted a $75,000 judgement against his idols in Santa Ana, Calif., on Wednesday (Feb. 24). Mark Perry, 23, won the default judgement for injuries he allegedly suffered at the hand of the Cure's bodyguard Brian David Adsett after Perry went to the band's hotel seeking an autograph in 1996. According to the plaintiff, none of the band members tried to stop the beating. Orange County Superior Court Judge Francisco Firmat entered the default judgement after the band failed to respond to the suit.

Erik Gunderson, Perry's attorney, stated that his client — whom he says was a "dedicated and loyal fan" of the band — received injuries to his face, lips, and teeth. His teeth required root canals, and he is awaiting plastic surgery for facial disfigurement.

"After he was served with the complaint during another autograph session in Hollywood," said Gunderson, "Robert Smith tore it up and threw it out into a crowd of people."

    From Yahoo Daily News:

Rock Group Slapped With Judgement - (IRVINE)

The alternative rock group the Cure has been ordered to pay 75-thousand dollars to a fan who says he was roughed up by their bodyguard at an Irvine concert. Orange County superior court judge Francisco Firmat issued a default judgement after the band failed to respond to the lawsuit by 25-year-old Mark Perry. He says band members stood by while their bodyguard beat him, knocking out his teeth, for seeking an autograph. Perry says he was once a fan, but now can't stand to hear the Cure's music. An attorney for the group denies the allegations and says they will seek to have the judgement overturned.

  • As those of you who read this page regularly know, Lars Wehmeyer & Dennis Ohrt have been invaluable informants for this page over the last year. Now Lars & Dennis have created their own website entitled Chinese Art & German Girls. I thank them for all the news, chart postions, concert reviews and setlists that they have contributed to this site, and I wish them all the best with their website. They have lots of unique ideas for their site and I think it will be an excellent addition to the "family" of Cure pages on the web. The site is scheduled to open tomorrow (Feb. 27th) at 10:15 pm German time (around 5:15 pm eastern / 4:15 pm central / 3:15 pm mountain / 2:15 pm pacific in the US).

  • Comedy Central will be repeating the 1996 episode of Saturday Night Live that featured The Cure as musical guests (performing Mint Car & Inbetween Days) on March 25th at 2pm (eastern) / 1pm (central) and again that night at midnight (eastern) / 11pm (central).

  • There was a songwriting contest over at Bowienet a few months ago, and guess who entered? Here's the story from the Bowienet news page:
  • 2/06/99 SILLY NEWS: "DON'T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB"

The BowieNet Cyber Song Contest "What's Really Happening", as we all know was a smashing success. Entries came in from all over the world. Well it turns out that various members of the legendary UK band - The Cure - submitted lyrics along with us mere mortals!

None of the boys won - or even made it to the finals.....but we might send them a mousepad for their efforts. PS - Keep an eye out for a new Cure CD during 1999, with hopefully a tour to follow.

Check out the Cure at their website www.thecure.com. It's a great site!

  • The Cure are mentioned in Bam magazine in an article about what albums to listen to on Valentine's Day:
  • "If you're looking for a record to get you into the mood, No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal suggests popping on something by Prince. "That can really bring out some animalistic urges" he says. When the time comes to do the dead, though, Kanal says switch to THE CURE. "You're pretty safe with seventeen seconds; Faith or Staring at the Sea, the singles collection. The older stuff creates a really dark background. Some of the slower stuff is amazing." (Sorry its been a week since any update, but I'm in New Orleans, its Mardi Gras, there's very little news right now, etc. Read my note at the end of today's update if you plan to be in New Orleans on Friday.)

  • There's a new Depeche Mode book comming out soon and will include an interview Daryl Bamonte (Thanks Jenna) :
  • "The hardback is scheduled for May and at the moment it's entitled 'Depeche Mode; A Biography by Steve Malins'. It is the most in-depth book on the band so far and includes extensive interviews with Alan Wilder, Daniel Miller, Flood, Tim Simenon, Stevo, Daryl Bamonte, Anton Corbijn, Gareth Jones and various musicians, including Afrika Bambaataa and Sparks. Both Depeche Mode, the band's management and Mute Records have been aware of the project from the start and have been extremely helpful in providing first-hand information, checking facts and so on. This is the first time they have agreed to contribute to a biography, albeit on an informal basis, so it should be a lot more accurate than previous efforts. Steve Malins is contributing Editor at Q Magazine and his previous books include a Paul Weller biography and Gary Numan's 'Praying To The Aliens' autobiography. "

  • Thanks to Steven for this report:
  • The Cure's 'Friday I'm in love' was featured briefly in an advertisement for the Chris Evans Virgin Radio breakfast show on the British ITV network(Thu/4/1/99) . It only lasted about 15-25 secs but featured clips from the promo video and Mr. Evans in the studio with his 'posse'.

  • The Cure were mentioned in the Feb. 4th edition of Now and The Eye (Thanks Omar) :
  • "What do the bands COGASM and CULT HEROS have in common?

    a) They're both one-time-only side projects of Robert Smith of The Cure

    b) They're both one-time-only side projects of Ian Astbury of The Cult

    c) They're both Canadian

    d) They're up-and-coming Australian groups"

"This is the first cure quote I've seen so far in the local entratainment papers here in Toronto. I've been here since the last summer and apparently this guy Alan Cross has been caving hard to make his Pop Quiz more interesting...The trivia is part of the New Rock Edge 102 's page in Now magazine and The Eye (leading weekly entretainment guides)...The thing is that this radio station is not playing cure stuff at all (except for a few requests on weekend)....anyway, just wanted to report this cure related note from this city"

  • There will be a Cure tribute night at the El Mocambo in Toronto on Feb. 24th (Thanks Omar):
  • Taking a closer look to Now magazine, in the music notes section appears the following:

    CURE NOD

It's moved from Sundays to Wednesdays, but the vaunted EL MOCAMBO tribute series -which has immortalized such musical luminaries as Echo & the Bunnymen, Joy Division and the Beach Boys- sets its sightson The Cure February 24. Saluting Robert Smith and crew in concert are Poppy Seed & the Love Explotion Orchestra, Mean Red Spiders, Sinphonic, Neck and others.

  • The Cure are also mentioned in an 80's trivia calendar (Thanks Pat):
  • "Just wanted to share a little "ditty" I found in a 1999 daily tear-off 80's trivia calendar while reading a few days ahead. (The calendar is actually called The 80's: Pop Culture Aptitude Test 1999.) For Monday, February15th, the question is:

Which of the following is not a song by The Cure?

    A. "Lullaby"

    B. "Just Like Heaven"

    C. "Close to You"

    D. "Let's Go To Bed"

    E. "Killing An Arab"

Obviously, all of us know the answer, but for the "uninformed," on the reverse side of the page, it says, C. "Close to You"......The dance club staple required a different pronoun; it was called "Close to Me"

  • As I mentioned above, we are in the middle of the Mardi Gras season here in New Orleans and there is very little time to get the website updated. Thankfully there is very little news right now. So unless there is some major news over the weekend, this site will not be updated until Tuesday night or Wednesday. Why? Because Nadine and I are riding in the Krewe of Choctaw this Friday night and then its non-stop parades until Tuesday night. So if anyone out there reading this is coming to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, come out to the Choctaw parade on Friday and look for us. We will be on float #8 ("A Beautiful Louisiana"), passenger side, at the bottom. Just yell for Craig & Nadine and we'll be sure to throw you some good stuff. But if you want the really nice beads you're going to have to show me something. That's right, you have to SHOW YOUR CURE SHIRT! : )

  • From Launch:
  • No Doubt On Producers, The Cure, And Lollapalooza Rumors

(2/3/99, 1 a.m. PST) - Following up an eight-times platinum, chart-topping album isn't easy. Just ask No Doubt. The band had originally started work on the follow-up to 1995's Tragic Kingdom with producer Matthew Wilder, who worked with the band on its breakthrough smash, at the A&M studios in Hollywood this past Summer.

After those sessions, the band was about to lay down tracks in New York with Hole and Marilyn Manson studio whiz Michael Beinhorn. But after problems scheduling time with Beinhorn, No Doubt has once again switched producers, opting to enlist Alanis Morissette producer/ collaborator Glen Ballard to helm the band's fourth album.

Still in the pre-production stage, No Doubt doesn't really know what its latest effort will sound like, says bassist Tony Kanal, except the band's members have been listening to an awful lot of the Cure. "Honestly, it's the simplicity," Kanal says. "Simple, yet so genius. We definitely appreciate bands who have gone through a lot of variations." As for No Doubt's own music, "it's too early to tell," he concedes. Though a band recording down the hall from No Doubt's A&M studio sessions last Summer reported hearing a more jazzy, early ska sound emanating from the room, Kanal laughs it off. "Jazzy? No. That's very funny." It's premature to describe any of the new material, because "we're just starting," he says. "But it's good to be back into it, working, writing, making a video [for "New," a song No Doubt wrote for the film Go], after all this time."

As for the talk that the band might be headlining Lollapalooza, Kanal says it's nothing more than a rumor. "You know, I read that, too," he says with a laugh. "There's no truth to that at all. We haven't decided any of our tour plans yet. Nothing is set."

  • "when fan means fanatical" andrew smith has a chilling experence on the net! in an artical about fan websites on the internet 'andrew smith' searches for some of the more popular websites around at the moment. the artical is somewhat long but a brief paragraph mentions the following - "pop's other most conspicuous fan-magnets over the years all seem obvious when we name them now: elvis, jim morrison of the doors (whose parisian grave is still visited by thousands of people a year), marc bolan, bowie, boy george and robert smith of the cure...did it always seem obvious that they would be the chosen ones?" the artical also mentions that 'marilyn manson' who are listed having the most (music related) websites on the internet today, some 65,327 entries using the name 'marilyn manson'!!!!
