  • More good news from Roger's website - looks like he will be selling some 'Truth In Me'/Moog t-shirts soon. Those shirts are so cool, they don't even know they're cool. : )  Also, there's an excellent new/old mp3 called 'Building #12' from his unfinished album 'Big Buildings'.

  • An update on the Curedrink, Robert has donated some signed items to be raffled off:

  • (Thanks Curedrink Organisers)

  • Some clarification about that 'A Forest' remix on the 12"/80's cd :

  • "I think you've already reported that the Cure appear on this new compilation from the UK.  It had listed the first track on the first disc as being THE CURE "A Forest (Extended Version)"  so I was curious as to what they were calling the "Extended Version."  we just received a promo copy and the copyright for the track is 2003 (while everything else is copyrighted in the 1980s as you'd expect for an 80s comp), so i thought it might be the new version that appears on Join The Dots, but it's not.  And it turns out that it is NOT the original 12" version (which is the same as the album version), but the "single version edit" found on the Greatest Hits CD."

(Thanks to Chris at The Ideal Copy)

  • According to Rock On TV, VH1 Classic will be repeating The Cure Unplugged on March 6th at 2pm.

"On French radio France Bleue (Pays de Savoie), the other evening, I heard they had a little jingle to present all the kind of music they play, so it was a mix of french and english-speaking bands, among which was another mash of THE CURE (close to me LP instrumental version) with AXELLE RED's sensualité vocals.  Sounded nice, though."

    (Thanks Fabien G)

"Look Out For: Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (http://www.star-ecentral.com/news/story.asp?file=/2005/2/28/music/10254087&sec=music)"

  • Cure cover:

  • "I just saw UltraNoir's show in Helsinki, Finland and they played brilliant versions of One Hundred Years and The Drowning Man among their own songs. It was great. I heard that they've covered Cure on their other gigs too."

    (Thanks Johanna)

  • Curespotting:

  • Time for your Daily O'Donnell Update here at A Chain of Rogers (hahaha):

  • - Roger has redesigned and updated his website. He has pages for News, Live, Pictures, Listening, Keyboards, Information, Collaborations, Photography, Truth and Grey Clouds Red Sky.

    - 'The Truth In Me' is more likely to be released in September, rather than the June date given out by BBC4 yesterday.

    - Roger is working on putting a band together, with the intention of playing some shows in London, Toronto and Los Angeles.

    - The new Grey Clouds Red Sky page contains two songs from his excellent 1994 debut album, and news that he will be making some copies of it available.

    - There's more, but go to Roger's site and read it all for yourself.

    - And the new song that I mentioned yesterday ('Tonight') has been removed, but you can still hear it at the MySpace page.

    Feb. 18th

  • More good news from Roger - he's posted some photos from the ICA show on his website, and even better, has posted an unused song from the 'Truth In Me' session (it's also on his MySpace page and has the title 'Tonight'). And don't forget to check out Front Row on BBC4 today (live streaming also available) for an interview with Roger.

  • The Daily Telegraph has an article called Perfect Playlist: The Cure.

  • (Thanks Steven and Lenore)

  • Upcoming Duran Duran auction:

  • "From the Staten Island Advance:

    DURAN DURAN ON EBAY

When it comes to tsunami relief, musicians just keep on giving.

To that, Duran Duran will be placing a celebrity signed soccer ball up for bid on eBay, www.ebay.com/duranduran from March 7- 17 with net proceeds going to Global Giving's Tsunami relief efforts. Band members, all of whom have signed the ball, have been collecting signatures from stars in the entertainment world since last year's MTV Europe Awards in Rome. The "football" includes the John Hancock of Cate Blanchett, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Maroon 5, Gwen Stefani, Robert Smith (The Cure), Black Eyed Peas, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, Naomi Campbell and Andre 3000 (Outkast).

    (Thanks Tempest)

  • And another charity auction:

    Dear Cure fans:

We were wondering if it was possible for you to make your members aware of an auction, that is benefiting the victims and familles, from the fire at the Station Club in Rhode Island.

The second anniversary is coming up on February 20. 100 people died, 62 kids lost 1 or both parents, 235 were hospitalized for burns.

I met Robert Smith during a taping of the Jools Holland show last November. He signed a South Park dvd. it is up for bid.

You can view the auction at www.mimifishman.org

Every single dollar does to www.stationfamilyfund.org

On behalf of the families and survivors.

    Thank You;
    John Langenstein

    (Thanks Angela)

  • Curespotting:

  • "An embarrassing curespotting and i cringe at sending it but, let's say i was flicking thru Robbie Williams book called "Feel" and he recalls that during auditions for Take that there were 5 guys left and" aguy, also from Stoke. He looked a bit like Robert Smith from the cure and couldn't dance".

The name Robert Smith does creep up in the most unexpected places sometimes"

    (Thanks JC)

"i'm not a wil wheaton fan, but I stumbled onto his site from boingboing.net ("a directory of wonderful things") as he commentedabout ASCAP's licensing of Podcasts (more on that here: http://www.boingboing.net/2005/02/15/ascap_licenses_podca.html).

anyway, check out his February 11th blog title:

"i slow my steps and start to blur"

    (Thanks Jason)

"My wife and I were just married after 10 years together (on our 10th anniversary) and instead of an organist or musicians, we had music playing... while seating the guests (and during the signing of the register) we played Carnage Visors (through once before and an excerpt during) and then our recessional was Lovesong. "

  • Some shots from Roger's show at the ICA in London tonight.

  • (Thanks Laurent)

  • Japanese release of 3IB Deluxe contains a lyric booklet:

  • "The 2CD reissue of Three Imaginary Boys was missing more than Killing An Arab, it was also missing LYRICS!  The new Japanese version overcomes the lyric oversight of the other editions.

    http://idealcopy.american-data.net//Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=MU-CURE-THREE-04

Basically, this is the European release with an outer obi wrap that contains a lyric book with English and Japanese lyrics.  The lyrics appear to be accurate and even include the lyrics to some of the songs on Disc 2.  This will most likely be the most complete release ever released of all the worldwide reissues for 3IB."

(Thanks to Chris at The Ideal Copy)

  • Some new Cure articles in various magazines:

  • - A special issue of Les Inrocks is now available, with discography, books and videos reviews, and previous Cure articles published in this magazine.

Here's a bit more about the issue (and you can see a couple of photos from it here and here):

    - The Cure (last album);  we don't really learn anything new, and, as for the following, it was pubulished previously in an issue of Les inrockuptibles in 2004.
    - Pornography; an analysis of this exceptionnal album; also previosly publihsed in 2003
    - Robert talks about each album (from TIB to Standing on a Beach).  itw published in 1987.
    - Kiss Me; RS explain several songs;  itw published in 87
    - Robert medical visit - each part of his body, like a visit to the doctor, is a used to approach an itw with Robert in a different way.  published (this time in Best magazine) in 89.
    - Wild Mood Swings;  itw published in 96
    - Bloodflowers;  itw published in 2000.
    - itw of Robert by Brian Molko;  published in 2001.

So, I had read it all already.

    Then, what's 'new':
    - 3 brief questions about 2004 and the reissues,
    - a brief point of view about their career,
    - a few pages and THE CURE and what was called the 'new wave',
    - the 80's revival and all the bands who cite the Cure as an influence,
    - 2 pages about Tim pope influence over the band's image,
    - the look,
    - 'important' words like 'love', 'death', 'kiss', 'fall', and so on, in Robert's lyrics,
    - and a discography (Albums, singles, videos, and books) deatailed, and explained (and obviously not so accurate).

"In brief, I'm a bit disappointed by this, because Les Inrockuptibles is known as a rather 'intellectual' culture magazine, and unfortunately what we
have here is just a compilation of articles already seen, and the 'new' stuff, well, it's all been said as well over all these years in a way or another on diverse magazines.  It's a shame because the articles previously published, when they first appear were informative, but now, are almost 'useless', and the new sections (Tim Pope, the new wave, especially) could have been much deeply investigated.

Still, for 7 Euros, it's probably worth buying for the few things one might rediscover and the one or two pictures I had never seen before."

    - A new magazine called Rock Stars is also available with a Cure article (nothing very new) with pictures of Robert with Placebo.

    - The normal issue of Les Inrocks has a small interview with Robert

    - Last Rock&Folk issue has an interview too, in which Robert talks about other musicians like the Banshees, Bowie and Interpol.

    (Thanks David and Fabien G)

  • Cure cover:

  • "NYC drag duo Kiki & Herb started their Valentine's concert 'Losers in Love' at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London with a pretty hysterical

  • Can anyone help Greg with this?

  • "I have been trying for quite a while to find a Robert postcard from 86 I believe. It is a black and white shot of Robert with his eyes closed and he is
smiling, He is making the sign of a gun  with his fingers pointed to his head. If anyone has it, I would love to get a copy of it for strictly personal reasons, just want to blow it up to an 8 x 10. Any help would be appreciated, just e-mail me."

  • Cure collection for sale:

  • "I'm a long time Cure fan and collector of the Cure since 87. I'm 35 and live in Boise, Idaho USA. I've recently fallen on hard times and have been debating weather or not to sell all my Cure vinyl  in an attempt to pay off my debt. I have 280 7" , 10", 12", LPs, and 212 cds, tapes, books and box sets from all over the world and almost all are in Mint- or better condition. I've decided to sell the vinyl for now but keep the rest of my collection for now CDs, books, videos, ect so as to not feel as if all is lost. However if some Cure fan was to make an offer that I couldn't turn down I might be swayed to sell everything which is about 496 items in Mint- or better condition including tons of rare items.
I would be willing to part with everything if someone was serious about acquiring a meticulously loved collection for something over $12,000. If  you could do this I would greatly appreciate it. I can be contacted at moonpuppy69@hotmail.com for questions."

    (Thanks Scott)

  • Curespotting:

  • "Just came across this one on cnn.com.

Excerpt from Brandon Flowers of the killers:
Q: You said earlier the Killers wanted to take it to a different level?

FLOWERS: Joy Division was a great band. But U2 and the Cure took that to another level and made it not only radio friendly but they kept their
dignity intact. We want to be one of those bands that people are into but also has written some great songs. And radio is changing. The Strokes and the White Stripes have all done a very good job. But they haven't broken the doors open.
    Rest of interview at: http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Music/02/16/music.q.a.thekillers.ap/index.html"

    "February 16th

The Windows Media Player Homepage today offers up 5 songs for free downloading - among them is "The Cure's 10:15 Saturday Night." Others
included Ray Charles' "America the Beautiful" and REM's "Losing My Religion".

    (Thanks Josh G)

"You can’t Google “The Cure” without returning at least 8 million individual pithy comments about how the seminal alt-pop-Goth band wavers between upbeat pop and moody Goth extremes.... - http://www.aversion.com/bands/reviews.cfm?f_id=1939"

    (Thanks Tempest)

"On a terrible cheap UK gossips mag (bought at the airport on Jan 22nd) there is a picture of robert and one of Jackie Smith (Sly stallone's
monster mum). Headline is 'Celebrity Lookalike' and it reads 'the big brother (UK) mother and the Cure singer both reckon more is more'.

I was ashamed! the woman is a monster.

And in the last issue of heat magazine (UK) a radio presenter is wearing a Cure diamante' encased tee shirt - looks like the Forest logo.

    What have we come to?"

    (Thanks Federica)

    Feb. 14th

  • Another compilation featuring The Cure:

  • "My office sends me to Starbucks Coffee frequently, and on the last trip I went through all of their CD's on the counter and The Cure are on one called "Modern Love Songs" with their song, Love Song.  The compilation is a little funny with an odd mix of 80's, 90's and 2000 songs and artists."

    (Thanks Lauren)

  • Cure covers:

  • "my second favorite band, norway's kings of convenience  happily appear to be relatively big fans of the cure. here is a website with a half-assed (but very endearing) cover of boys don't cry. http://www.kingsofconvenience.org/kocdownloads.html

also, the other night after their last show in nyc, they had an afterparty at a club called the hanger. one of the members, erlend oye, dj'ed. and i

  • Curespotting:

  • "Yesterday (Friday 11 feb.), on BBC1 in the UK, Dom Joly impersonated Robert Smith in his show "World shut your mouth".
He went into a ovenstore, dressed and made up as Robert, inquiring about gas ovens, trying to fit his head in.On the background Lullaby could be heard. After he had chosen an oven, he asked if he could have the oven delivered as soon as possible because: "I really want to get it over with tonight". I hope Robert saw it!!!! It was hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    (Thanks Hannah and Richard)

  • "The source that provided Super Hero Hype with the tip on the Batman Begins soundtrack as been debunked, at least the report that Metallica.

  • There's a new Cure tribute cd (from Vitamin Records) coming out on March 8th, called The Piano Tribute To The Cure.

  • (Thanks Mark)

  • Cure covers:

  • "I heard a fantastic live acoustic cover of 2 Late on the radio as I drove through central California on Friday night - some college radio station out of Fresno (90.7 I think?).  It was a band called Tomihira - great indie/shoegaze band with heavy Cure influences...   www.tomihira.com"

    (Thanks Michelle)

"Death Cab for Cutie have a song called Love Song on an upcoming tsunami relief album. No confirmation, but it could be a Cure cover.  They play
it live quite a bit. http://pitchforkmedia.com/news/05-02/03.shtml#story2"

  • 'Same Deep Water As You'  remix:

  • "Feb 21, 2005:  NEW LIQUIFIED RELEASE/the Cure remixed, Bonzai Music :

A -   "Same Deep Water As You" (The Cure, DJ Roh rework)
    B -   "H2o"         (Liquified)
    BB - "Tropikal"  (Liquified)
We are extremely happy to announce the new Liquified 12" vinyl release on one of Europe's finest progressive house labels, Belgium's Bonzai Records!

Rework of Cure classic, "same deep water as you"
Some tracks never fade... Junior Jack, Paul Oakenfold, and Blank & Jones have remixed them, so I had a stab at this timeless track from "Disintigration" by the Cure, possibly the finest alternative album ever produced. Not something you would expect a house track from, but the
sweeping emotional beauty of the whole affair lent itself perfectly to this deep tribal workout, with nods to the original vocal and a breathtaking piano melody! listen here: www.liquified.org"

    (Thanks Roland)

  • Curespotting:

  • "you might have already heard about this but anyway, yesterday night Channel 4 in the UK broadcasted "The 100 Greatest Music Videos of all time" as voted by the British audience. The Cure made it to # 57 with Close to Me. Before showing the video they made a short introduction of the band with excerpts from the Forest, Lovecats, In Between Days. In the background Tim Pope (must be a recent interview) said that when he met Robert for the first time he did not have the impression of a gloomy person at all, but that he seemed a rather jolly chap. Then he commented on making of the Close to Me video, saying that the song inspired him claustrophobia and thus the wardrobe idea. He also recalled the day they shot the video and reported (in a very funny way) that during the lunch breack the operators and the band all went for an indian, which made the last shootings of the video pretty difficult as, I quote here "... you know after all that food, eight blokes in a wardrobe, it was not at all pleasant. Stop. Say no more."

"I have some good news from Poland. In the 2004 Competition in the most  important polish rock magazine TERAZ ROCK (02/2005) www.terazrock.pl. The Cure win in the best group category (second U2, third Rammstein), Robert win in category best vocalist (second Bono, third Brian Molko), album of the year - The Cure The Cure on sixth place, hit of the year The end of the world on 5th place, and the most important event of the year The Cure Comeback on 4th place. Three Imaginary Boys Deluxe Edition has a very positive review 5/5 with last words "God Save The Cure" :) "

"on the last sunday of January on Swiss radio Couleur 3, they played something quite strange but interesting;  I didn't hear the beginning of the
track, but when I came into my room I could hear a forest (tree mix), but instead of Robert's vocals, was Bjork's voice singing 'hidden place'. Strange at first, it sounded in fact quite good!  Finally, when she stops singing, it's the original album version of the end of a forest which is played, with the guitar then bass solos.  I don't know if it was a remix by the radio programmer or something anyone else's has heard about (a white label again?)"

"while paying a visit to the library i got my hands on a book "To Be Someone" by Louise Voss. i got nicely surprised to see a list of songs at the index pages and among those is Lovesong. the songs are somewhat used as chapters and looking where Lovesong is the chapter title, it gets mentioned that a band (forgot the name) is touring with The Cure. it said some other things about The Cure in that chapter, maybe more throughout the entire book. checking it on Amazon it seems like a very good book indeed so might rent it next time."

    Feb. 2nd

COF is on a Mardi Gras break, but I'll try to do an update later today or late tonight.

  • Quick update on the two big rumors going around right now. First the Best Buy ad claiming a Cure/Green Day tour:

  • "Posted in a best buy ad…Could they really be touring together soon?
    http://www.greendayauthority.com/site_images/greendaycuretour.jpg

From what I've heard, no, there is no tour being planned with Green Day or anybody else.  So what about that talk about The Cure doing a song for the new Batman Begins movie?

"I was following up on the new Batman Begins movie, and found this posting... again, I've heard the Green Day comments before - even from
interviews with them.  However, with a darker batman movie, maybe a great dark cure track would fit in nicely.
    http://www.superherohype.com/news/batmannews.php?id=2525"

I can't confirm or deny that one, but if it does happen, it would most likely be a Robert track, not a Cure track.

  • Cure covers:

  • "my roommate got back from seeing ben folds on friday. he said mr. folds opened his show with a cover of inbetween days!! my roommates not a cure
fan, but he said it was awesome!"

    (Thanks Philip)

"I got this cool e.p. by Leaving Rouge called "White Houses." I went to check out the band's website and lo and behold, they have a Cure cover
("Cold") available for download at www.leavingrouge.com. The cover is very different - mostly voice and acoustic with minimal backing effects and vocals. It's a nice cover, but I am most pleased with the band's original material."

    (Thanks Rust)

"here is a link to a cover of Just Like Heaven played by Joyride. http://www.jride.com/audioandvideo.htm"

    (Thanks Washaki)

"A friend of mine linked me to this band. Could you please put this message on your site? I don't normally do this, but these guys are Cure fans
    and they're really good....

The band is called Blue Sky Goodbye. You can listen to some of thier songs at purevolume, including a cover of Just Like Heaven. These guys are really good. Help them out and buy thier album.

  • "Robert quote in the new Fender catelog, the page for the Jaguar Baritone (a Bass VI, almost)- "If I ever lost mine (Bass VI) I don't know what I would do,..probably give up!"

    (Thanks ALClovis)

"A quick one for you: there's a small piece in the new issue of MOJO magazine (March 2005, Bob Marley cover) as part of the "Hello, Goodbye"
series. It's on Michael Dempsey leaving The Cure, complete with new photo of the man. Apologies on their behalf for identifying a 1976-era pic of Porl as Lol, but that's what you get when you don't consult an expert..."

"A controversial Ballet depicting the life of Princess Diana is being launched in London this week to rave reviews.

"Diana the Princess's leading part is played by Zara Deakin, who's waif like figure is seen pirouetting across the stage and then quite suddenly a grinding Cure tracks roars from the speakers as two further dancers enter stage dancing provocatively" -  these happen to be Charles and Camilla.

Visions of Snakepit and maybe Shake Dog Shake spring to mind. Urgh..

Whatever next, Cure songs being used as programme introductions on mainstream terrestrial TV?.....

    (Thanks Damian)

"Preview of the Schaufuss ballet "Diana the Princess"

"Why blend Elgar and the Cure for the score? “Well, Elgar is the British royal composer,” says Schaufuss, implying that it seems obvious to him. “It’s the music of the Proms, the Albert Hall and all that pageantry. And the Cure was very much from that time, the 1980s. It was music I was listening to myself during that period, so I felt they belonged to the story. And, of course, the Cure are an unusual band, an outstanding band. When I started cutting the music together, I felt there was something very British in both types of music, and the contrast worked well."

Ray the cat, having previously gotten stoned, tries to make conversation with his friend Teodor about soccer, but realizes "Man that was stupid of COURSE Teodor doesn't like sports He listens to The Cure" Ray then writes "The Cure" on a piece of driftwood to give to Teodor as a peace-offering."

"this is from a column by Bill Simmons.  Though primarily a sportswriter, he clearly enjoys riffs on pop culture:

Q: What do you think is THE defining song of the 80's? Not the most popular, but the song that if you were putting a disc of one song in a time capsule for 100 years and they were to open it, what song would scream "This is why the 80s rules." I say it's Blue Monday by New Order, but I'm open to suggestions
    --Lance Hughes, Lubbock, TX

SG: That's a great "Driving on a road trip and needing something to argue about for 50 miles" question. In my opinion, a quintessential 80's song should accomplish five things:

    A. It should make you think that, except for the rare exceptions -- like the Killers or Franz Ferdinand -- they don't make music like this anymore.

    B. It should be happy and moody at the same time, the last song you would ever hear before driving your car off a bridge.

No Crockett. No Tubbs. No dice.

    C. It should have a definite beat -- you could dance to it, clean your car to it, drive 110 MPH to it, etc -- and it should definitely sound like something that could have been used in Miami Vice (in an opening montage or a "driving around Miami and checking out hot chicks" scene, not a car chase or a "Tubbs hangs out in a strip joint and pretends he's Jamaican" scene).

    D. It should make you question your own sexuality for about 0.87 seconds before you say, "Ah, screw it, it's a good song."

    E. It should be dated, cheesy and a little overdramatic ... but not so much that the song isn't still enjoyable even now.

Anyway, these would be my six choices (with apologies to "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, which wasn't quite morose enough since it was about an orgasm):

    1. "The Promise," by When In Rome
    2. "Suedehead," by Morrissey
    3. "Uncertain Smile" by The The
    4. "A Forest" by The Cure
    5. "The Killing Moon," by Echo and the Bunnymen
    6. "Age of Consent," by New Order

So there you go. And yes, I spent about 90 minutes coming up with that list. And you wonder what I do all day.

The whole article can be found here: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/050127

He seems to have the Cure in his head a lot, as  he wrote a few weeks earlier:

"Saddest group of fans: Seahawks fans You have to feel for them. Even as Vanilli was running down the sidelines with that game-winning overtime TD, I was thinking of my poor friend KJ, a die-hard Seattle fan and author of the upcoming book, "If We Killed Jim McIlvaine, Would That Get Him off The Cap?" Imagine rooting for the Seahawks for the past 20 years? Has there been a more nondescript franchise in any sport?

(Whoops, that's what I wrote last season after the crushing Packers game. Since then, we've had two more agonizing regular season losses for Seattle, plus a playoff defeat where their receiver dropped a game-tying TD on the final play. Not only have the Seahawks failed to win a playoff game in 20 years, they have lost three of their last five playoff games on the final play. Personally, I think the franchise should embrace their fan's pain and just start playing The Cure and The Smiths during home games.)"

"yesterday, as i was zapping my way through the TV Channels, i jumped by France 2 ( or was it 3 or 1? can't remember exactly, a French channel
anyway ) and thought i recognised a Cure melody in there. As i switched one channel back to verify this, it appeared "Close to me" was playing
as background music for ( i was just in time to see the end of the ad :) ) Orange, a telecom operator. The part of the song that was used was the
intro, up till Robert starts singing those "uh-uh-uh" thingies right before he starts singing the first verse."

    (Thanks Laurent)

"While listening to Michael Medved (he has a great show) yesterday, the intro he used was "The Blood".
