  • 'Dots' chart update:
  • "Join the dots has made the TOP 10 on the Greek charts! So "Dots" is at # 7 this week!"

    (Thanks Vagelis)

  • 'Live In Japan' video on Ebay:
  • "You can buy the original and unavailable historical video "Live in Japan" on EBAY. A must have item for serious cure collectors. Good Luck!

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3389549619&category=309"

Update: "I just wanted to tell you one thing. You carried some information about the video live in Japan auctioned at ebay. I have just noticed that it is not an official one but a bootleg. Please take a look at a picture of its cover. Any live in Japan video with the blue band on the cover's right side is a bootleg. The offcial one has a blue band only at the bottom of it. Please check some official one's pictures at my site:

    (Thanks Alex and Fusae)

  • Curespotting:
  • "i was watching fuse ( a music video station) a little while ago when i heard the music to lullaby. i looked up only to see that it was not infact the lullaby video, but one called "snowflakes" by Just Jack..."

    (Thanks Rhi)

"Just a quick note to let everyone know that last night (friday 27) on Much Music during a show called "The Wedge" (the only half decent show left, IMHO) they played the video for JustJack's Da Hype f/ Robert and following that they played the video for Why Can't i be You. It was a treat considering they never play the Cure on Much Music anymore... I can still remember back in '96 when they would have 2 part Spotlights on them all the time... but what can you do?"

    (Thanks Lindsay)

"Found this in the St.Paul Pioneer Press on Friday, thought is was odd but cool they refer to Robert as the "King of Now"!!

  • The new label search is finally over. The Cure are now signed to Geffen/Interscope. So another step closer to getting the new album out.
  • Update: Then again, maybe not. Close, but not signed.

    (Thanks Tim)

  • A bit more about recent tour rumors:
  • 1. Love & Rockets ARE back together and planning a tour very soon, but I've heard nothing to connect them to The Cure.

    2. Although radio ads claim that The Pixies are only together again for the 11 date warm-up tour and the Coachella show, they are already booked for a European tour after Coachella, and WILL be touring the US later this summer. Whether it's with The Cure, Lollapalooza or something else.......wait & see. : )

    3. While we'd all like to see 3 hour Cure shows without an opening band, that's the one thing that I haven't heard anyone mention. I think we better get used to the idea of an opening band on the next tour. Hey, it could have been much worse. So with that in mind, who would you like to see open on the next tour? Send in your choice, and I'll compile them into a list and post it. Be realistic though, don't say Bowie, Depeche Mode, U2, reformed Smiths, etc. And please only vote for one band. If you mention more than one, only the first one will be counted.

  • Cure for Arrow Rock Festival?
  • "Today I heard at the "Arrow Rock" radio-station an ad for their festival this June, in which they mentioned The Cure in the line-up. I checked their site http://www.arrowrockfestival.nl/ but it's not mentioned there. However on the site The Cure is on a list where you vote for them.

By the way, look at the other bands on the line-up ;-)"

    (Thanks Maarten)

  • 'Dots' review in Entertainment Weekly:
  • "Join The Dots got reviewed in Entertainment Weekly this week and I'm here to post it, I'm too lazy to scan it though, forgive me!

The Cure, Join the Dots: B-Sides & Rarities 1978-2001(Fiction/Elektra/Rhino)

Aging goths, rejoice! The Cure's first boxed set is an alternate history of the surprising resilient band's career. Only Disc 1 is essential, but even the lesser material leaves lipstick traces. EXTRAS A meticulously notated 76-page booklet, complete with plenty of photos of frontman Robert Smith's legendary rat's nest, er, hair. B+ "

    (Thanks m0zm0de)

    And a review at Premonition:

"There is a very positive review of Join the Dots on the Premonition webzine. You can go check it out there: http://www.premonition.fr/premo.php3?chroid=230011 (in French only, for now)."

    (Thanks Olivier)

    And another from Hour:

"I found this review on Hour, a free weekly local newspaper in Montreal, they gave it 3 stars and half, not bad for a City that honeslty do not know to much about The Cure

Reads as follows: (*)(*)(*)1/2 THE CURE Join the Dots B-Sides and Rarities 1978-2001 Decades later and the Cure can still press a warm finger into a cold heart, and vice versa as befits the release. Their emotive breadth, which ocassionally (occassionally?!) spilled over into extreme pathos and bottomless melancholy is captured here on this collection of B-sides and rarities spanning the years 1978-2001. The first of the four CDs - here in book form with a fortune in old band photos in the extensive liner notes - is without doubt the best, drawing from the band's peak creative years, 1978-87. The other 3 CDs offer somewhat less, though there are still diamonds in the sand (look no further than the gorgeous This is a lie, off the 1996-2001 disc). As much as I wouldn't recommend this as a starting point for first-time listeners, it's a walk down fascination street for loyal, longtime fans such as myself (the writer), accustomed to the good, the bad and, yes, the downright ugly. (jamie O'meara)"

    (Thanks Luis)

  • 'Dots' in Mexico:
  • "I just wanted you to know that I just came back from Libreria El Sotano where I got my copy of Join The Dots. I don't know if it is for sale everywhere in Mexico, I just saw it and knew I had to get it! Oh I almost forgot, it cost me $496 pesos (more or less $50 USD). I'm listening to it right now and it's really wonderful."

    (Thanks Mario)

  • 'Bloodflowers' reissue in Italy:
  • "I've just seen on a TV ad that Universal Italia is promoting a series or reissues of "classic rock albums" for special prices (15, 10, 5 said the ad (the normal cost of a cd album is around 19)) and Bloodflowers is included among these (there was a slideshow of various album sleeves, and bf was one of them). I don't know anything more about it, there's nothing related to it in the Universal Italia website."

    (Thanks Pietro)

  • I'm sure many of the Dream Tour "regulars" will remember this:
  • "cure fan documentary

hello. as some of you know i've been working on a documentary about cure fans. if you are interested in it's progress, or in helping out, please check out www.arushabaker.com

on the website, cure doc information can be found under dial #2. thanks!

    sincerely,

    arusha"

I can't wait to see it. Should be a lot of fun and good memories. Now, who's going to do the 2004 ****** Tour? : )

    (Thanks Arusha)

  • 'Lost Wishes' on Ebay:
  • "Due to a shortage of funds I am reluctantly selling my copy of the Lost Wishes cassette on eBay. Is it possible to put a link up on your site so that people can view my auction, as I guess there are a few Cure fans out there who might like to buy it? This is a totally legitimate auction and I would like the cassette to go to a good home!"

    (Thanks Julian)

  • Curespotting:
  • "You may know that for the past 51 and 32 days NASA has had 2 robotic devices exploring the surface of the planet Mars. As they do for the guys at the space station in orbit around the earth NASA plays a wake-up song every morning for the guys in the control room of the MARS ROVERS. They play a song that somehow relates to things going on with that particular MARS ROVER that day. NASA wesbite today had the playlists up for both rovers Spirit and Opportunity.

Opportunity on SOL 10 (DAY 10) had the morning wake-up song Pictures Of You by The Cure. Pictures Of You was chosen as the wake-up song for SOL 10 (DAY 10) because that day the Opportunity Rover was sending back to earth it's first Microscopic Image. "

    (Thanks B)

"An interesting curespotting took place the other day in my 2nd grade classroom where one of my students came in sporting a cure t-shirt from the swing tour! She didn't know who they were, she just like the panda bear! After the initial shock--it kept me smiling all day long."

    (Thanks Melanie)

    Feb. 26th

  • As promised, here's the complete breakdown of the Soundscan numbers for 'Dots'.
  • (Thanks Dave)

  • Interesting news from German promoter Karsten Jahnke:
  • "Karsten Jahnke Konzertdirektion just announced on their website http://www.karsten-jahnke.de that a Cure tour is coming soon: THE CURE (JUNE/JULY) + THE CURE (SEPT/OCT)"

Hmm, festivals in the summer and Cure shows in the autumn?

Update: Well, those dates have mysteriously disappeared from the website. This leads us to the following conclusions: 1. The dates were wrong, so they were removed or 2. The dates were right, weren't supposed to be posted yet, so they were asked to remove them. My money is on #2. Funny how the same thing happened with that NME Glastonbury story, isn't it? : )

    (Thanks Sascha and Marco)

  • Oh, you want US tour rumors too? Ok, here you go:
  • "A WWCD 101.1 DJ (Columbus, Ohio), after having played a Cure song, said there's "talk" of The Cure touring with Pixies and Love & Rockets. Have you heard anything about this? Could you find out about it? I hope it's untrue, since I prefer 3 hours of Cure music over a "package tour" like this!"

    (Thanks Jim)

"I heard on KNDD in Seattle that they think the cure will tour large outdoor venues with the likes of love and rockets and the pixies this summer. "

    (Thanks Todd)

"My question is in regards to a tour rumor I heard last Thursday, 2/19/04, in Seattle, on 107.7 FM / KNDD. The DJ said she heard rumors that The Cure, Radiohead, and Depeche Mode are "rumored" to tour together. In all fairness to her, she did emphasize the word "rumor" about 3 or 4 times. Do you have any rumor confirmation of this?"

    (Thanks Ryan)

Boy, KNDD can't make up their mind, can they? Well, I think I can safely say that, no, The Cure will not be touring with Radiohead and Depeche Mode this summer. As for the rest, are Love & Rockets back together or something? I hope not. The Pixies? Many rumors swirling around them at the moment. : ) Is this the 89 Prayer Tour again? And if so, why isn't the best band from that lineup, Shelleyann Orphan, included? Large outdoor venues? What, like amphitheatres? I think we can safely assume yes to that one. So to recap:

    1. Radiohead and Depeche Mode - NO!

    2. Love & Rockets - Doubtful, and I hope NO!

    3. The Pixies -Being mentioned and "confirmed' for every single tour this summer. Wait & see.

    4. Large outdoor venues - Almost certainly YES!

    5. The Church and All About Eve - Only in my head, so NO! : )

  • The BBC website has a story about the Barfly ticket auctions, and of course, totally undercut The Cure:
  • "BBC News Online have an article about the auctions for the Barfly gigs at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/3489134.stm. I think they need to learn how to search on completed items in eBay as their prices are well out - one pair of Cure tickets went for £2750."

Update: After many of you wrote in and corrected the BBC, they have updated the story. Way to go Cure fans! : )

    (Thanks Ian)

  • New 'Dots' reviews at North Texas Daily and Launch UK.
  • (Thanks Steven)

  • Vote for The Cure to play the Neapolis Festival.
  • (Thanks M)

  • Here's an english translation of that article from rockstar.it :
  • 02/15/2004 - "Watching Me Fall" - The Cure (02/15/2000: The Cure's "Bloodflowers" is out)

    Author: Robert Smith

    Album: "Bloodflowers", 2000

"Yeah I've been watching me fall for it seems like years/watching me grow small, I watch me disappear"

It would have to be the last, as every Cure disc since fifteen years. The line up would have to free the solo career of Robert Smith, finally ready to get rid of his creature and take upon himself to arouse feelings in his fans by voice, words, guitar and everything else. But, surprises excepted, it won't be so: The Cure are nearly ready for another album and they don't look like being in a so poor shape. The band who went through twenty years of English music among ups and downs, going to the end of the new millennium bent on their knees, since their various accidents and the not so great responses for "Wild Mood Swings", had to rise again with the Smith-Gallup-Bamonte-Cooper-O'Donnell line-up. And they turned out right: the blood flowers grow with strength and desperation of the band's more glittering days, from "Out of This World" which opens the disc with sweetness, going by one of the fundamental peaks of the album, the eleven minutes and over of "Watching Me Fall". The self-observation of the falling is maybe one of the most suitable metaphors for a band who has always kept something decaying in his appearance. "Where the Birds Always Sings" is an easy dream against a hard world, "Maybe Someday" melts regrets and pessimism, the sweet and crying "The Last Day of Summer" is maybe too simple, musically speaking, but it gives little emotions. And so on: "There is No If..." reminds of some tracks of "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" periods, with a pop that has no shame to be itself. "39" and "The Loudest Sound" are also different ways to deal with anguish. And "Bloodflowers" has a kind way of singing over the lines. The band is alive, and will survive for quite a long time.

    (Thanks Claudio)

  • The Cure are now the featured artists on the new Schecter website.
  • (Thanks Joey)

  • Curespotting:
  • "A new book is now available in France : it's called "All Access (de la scene aux coulisses pop-rock)". This book is published by the french rock photograph Gaelle Ghesquiere, and contains 2 nice pictures of Robert Smith, taken in Paris in 1996 and 2000.

For scans of the book, have a look here : http://jjcc.chez.tiscali.fr/curepress/AllAccess.jpg

The book also shows some nice pictures of various bands and rock stars as Bjork, Nina Hagen, Indochine, L7, Metallica, Iggy Pop, Tricky and many more.

You can also access to Gaelle Ghesquiere's website here : http://www.gaelleghesquiere.com/photolist.htm"

    (Thanks to Jerome at Plainsong)

"On a rather unpleasant tv show on BBC3 last night in the UK, all about the sex lives of Ausrailian teenagers, "Lullaby" was used as instrumental backing to an info segment about cervical cancer. There was a nudey adolescent female jumping around in the background. All highly suspect, and very surreal."

    (Thanks Jason)

"Back to life, back to reality"

  • Yes, yes, Mardi Gras is finally over, so back to regular updates right? Well, no. I've decided to give up COF updating for Lent. So no updates for the next 40 days. Sorry.
  • Just kidding!!! : ) Lots to catch up on, so let's get started.

  • Congratulations to the Barfly competition winners. Remember, you still have one last chance to get tickets on Ebay. It ends in a few hours and the current price is $1,361.12. How badly do you want to go? : )

  • Ross Robinson posted this message to the I Am Recordings message board a few days ago:
  • 2/22/2004 ROSS

I SUCK AT THE WEB,SORRY FOR NOT BEING ON TOP OF THIS! TERRY JUST GAVE ME HIS VOX AMP TO USE FOR THE CURE RECORD. IT WAS GREAT TO FINALLY MEET HIS DOG! TERRYS MUSIC WILL COME OUT VERY SOON. NOT SURE OF EXACT DATE. ROBERT SOUNDS EXACTLY THE SAME AS HE DID ON KISS ME! EVERYTHING ON THIS RECORD IS FUCKING DARK AND VERY, VERY CURE! IT'S LIKE WE'RE WEIGHTLESS, WALKING ON WATER, LIVING LIFES CALLING!!! THANKS FOR VISITING THIS SITE, THIS IS MY FIRST TIME SINCE IT WAS MADE.

Well, that sounds great, but what else would you expect Ross to say? But it "jives" with everything else I've heard about the recording, the "sound" and the emotional feel of the album. All indications point to this being an exceptional album.

    (Thanks Christian)

  • "Dots" had fourth week US sales of 2,316. Total US sales so far: 22,811. I swear I'll get the regional sales data posted this week. I also have the sales data for a number of cities and will try to get that posted as well. If you're a charts/numbers geek (like me), you'll love it. : )
  • (Thanks Dave)

  • More chart news:
  • " 'Join the dots' is up to # 14 on the Greek charts from # 22 last week"

    (Thanks Vagelis and Antony)

  • 'Dots' makes the EW "Must List" at #1:
  • "The February 27, 2004 volume #753 issue of Entertainment Weekly mentions the Cure in "The Must List."

    Quote:

Number 1 (out of 10) "JOIN THE DOTS, the Cure - Rockers just don't look as good in lipstick anymore - nor do they make lush B sides and rarities like those in this four-disc set."

    I've posted the scan here.

    (Thanks Kate)

  • US release of the Blank & Jones remix of 'A Forest':
  • "This Tuesday in the U.S., Blank & Jones' "A Forest" is finally released. It's a two disc set, comprising a seven track cd and a dvd. The track listing on the CD is "A Forest (Short Cut)," "A Forest (Original Mix)," "A Forest (Vegas Cossmo Remix)," "A Forest (Tripeller Remix)" - and the non-Cure related - "Summer Sun," "Flaming June," and "A Night to Remember." The DVD has "A Forest" video featuring Robert Smith and footage of Blank interviewing Robert. Robert reveals that he listens to new music in the kitchen, often. Hilarious stuff. There is a short description on the inlay of how Robert Smith came to work with Blank & Jones, and both discs are picture discs showing all three artists."

    (Thanks Rust)

  • Anybody know more about this one?
  • "There was a great 'bootleg' played tonight on Radio One's Pete Tong Essential Selection in the UK - the only information I can find on the Radio 1 website is 'Tiga Vs Robert Smith - Unknown - White Label' - it was an electronic song with Robert singing (didn't recognise the vocals from anywhere else) - I really liked it. Been checking around the internet but can't find anymore information on the song unfortunately. Does anyone else know anything about it?"

    Update: I just had to ask, didn't I? I'll never escape from it, will I? : )

"The Tiga vs Robert Smith White Label song mentioned in the Cure News is actually a remix of "Da Hype". Sounds a little better than the Junior Jack version."

    (Thanks Pete, Joe and Petr)

  • Some more Cure Tour books for auction on Ebay:
  • 1987 Kissing Tour

    1987 Kissing Tour

  • Is anyone interested in planning a Cure party in Belgium?
  • "well, the idea of holding a Cure party here in Belgium still didn't leave my mind, and i found someone to help me do it, but i would like to ask a second time if there really are people interested in that kind of thing down here ( hell, i'm a poor student, i don't want to spend al my bucks on it, just for the sake of having done it ). Anyway, since they just released the B-Sides Box set, and a new album is coming it's way all with a world tour packed with, it seems like a perfect moment to do so!

I'm still looking for some ideas on how in the name of God we can make this thing appealing to you. Should we just play singles till the sun comes up, or should we invite some cover group? Contests? I dunno... So if any of you guys has any ideas or has a cover group and is interested in playing ( or wants to donate some funds ;) ), please lemme know at: mrtns84@pi.be ( i also speak dutch an french if that's easier for you... ).

Also, since we're not quite expecting a lot of people down there ( unless you all massivly mail me now ;) ), we're still looking for a descent place to organize the damn thing. So if any of you is from the area of Mechelen or somewhere near, and you know of some good little local place, feel free to tell me! Since my partner in crime has some 'slight' worries at work ( being a student has it's fun sides ;) ), please note that it won't be for tommorow... Expect it in about a few months ( yeah, i know, i told that before... well, you all know how life goes!! ). But i promise we WILL hold this Cur(s)e(d) party! "

    (Thanks Laurent)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Late last night while watching tv I saw a commercial for Bilboard # 1's : the 80's. One of those compilations from the 80s. This one includes Fascination Street and on the commercial the title of the song was on the screen with a picture of The Cure from the Dream Tour (the one of the whole band that was on the t-shirts). I don't think they played a little of it as they do though."

    (Thanks Enrique)

"I found The Cure's PORNOGRAPHY displayed at nr 3 in a top 30 darkest albums of all time list. It is an italian site. http://www.ondarock.it/topdark.html "

    (Thanks Julian)

"Sat 21th Feb, on french tv France 2, in the program 'tout le monde en parle' (itws of people, stars...) at the end they always play a game of Blind test. This time, the dj played 'last night a dj saved my life' and one of the guest (a writer) trying to guess what it was said "Cure? Siouxsie and the B? Chic?" . He obviously was all wrong, although he made pretty good gueeses on the previous tracks played..."

    (Thanks Fabien G)

"this is a little old, but anyway: the site rockstar.it has a "song of the day" section where they review an album every day, choosing it for particular dates (eg. birth of the singer, release date of the album...) after having reviewed KM, Wish & Disintegration all on significant dates (Wish was reviewed on 21/4 for the birthday of robert), on 15/2, obviously for the 4th "birthday" of Bloodflowers, they reviewed this album. As a matter of fact, the track they choose for the title has got nothing to do with the review, which is of the album itself and not of the single song. i don't have the will to translate it in english, sorry! : )

15/02/2004 - "Watching Me Fall" - The Cure (15/02/2000: Esce "Bloodflowers" dei Cure)

Autore: Robert Smith Album: "Bloodflowers", 2000

"Yeah I've been watching me fall for it seems like years/watching me grow small, I watch me disappear"

"Where The Birds Always Sing" è un sogno semplice contro un mondo difficile, "Maybe Someday" concentra rimpianti e pessimismi, la dolce e piangente "The Last Day Of Summer" forse è troppo semplice a livello musicale, ma regala piccole emozioni. "

    (Thanks Pietro)

"At my job I spend most of the day contacting different auto insurance companies. Today I was on hold for Indiana Farm Bureau, and what music came on? Yesterday's Gone! To say I was shocked is quite an understatement. I would have been surprised at any Cure song, but a rather obscure track like that really floored me. Needless to say I'll be looking for any reason I can to call that office again."

    (Thanks Charles)

  • Here's a scan of an article from today's London Evening Standard. Good stuff, except for that "Smith's hirelings" bit.
  • (Thanks Ange)

  • 'Perfect Blue Sky' on Magnet cd sampler:
  • "I just received my new issue of Magnet magazine in the mail yesterday. The new free CD sampler includes "Perfect Blue Day" by Junkie XL (w/RS). I was not expecting to ever have this track. It was a nice surprise to say the least. And it's a fun song too."

    (Thanks John)

  • Again, sorry for no updates, blame it on Mardi Gras. Anyway, NME ran a story yesterday saying that The Cure were confirmed for Glastonbury:
  • MACCA GIVES GLASTO THUMBS ALOFT!

PAUL McCARTNEY has been confirmed to headline the Saturday night (June 26) at this year's GLASTONBURY.

Festival organiser Michael Eavis confirmed the ex-Beatle's slot at the Oxford Union last night (February 18).

Eavis revealed that McCartney was booked for this year's event on the Tuesday after the festival finished last year.

Other artists confirmed for the three-day festival are The Cure, James Brown, Kings Of Leon, Basement Jaxx, My Morning Jacket and the Scissor Sisters.

Oasis, and The Strokes are currently in talks with Eavis, who revealed Noel Gallagher had phoned him personally to talk about Oasis's participation in the festival. Acts such as Pixies, Muse, Elbow, Idlewild, and Keane are also strongly rumoured to play.

Eavis also commented that he would book the Red Hot Chili Peppers if they contacted him with regards to playing the festival, but felt that they were "more for 14 year-olds".

As previously reported on NME.COM, tickets for the event, taking place on June 25 - 27 at Worthy Farm, Pilton, in Somerset, will go on sale on April 1, at 8pm. Tickets for this year's event will cost £112 plus booking fee, and postage costs. Credit cards will not be accepted, and tickets will be limited to two per person.

But check the story today and you'll notice that The Cure have been removed and PJ Harvey has been added. Did NME jump the gun or simply get it wrong? We'll have to wait a bit longer to find out.

  • Another Robert collaboration. He really gets around these days, doesn't he?
  • "From Les Inrockuptibles (http://www.lesinrocks.com/ListeNews.cfm?iditem=163456)

Mani from Stones Roses (and Primal Scream), Peter Hook from New Order and Andy Rourke from The Smiths have decided to work together. The band would be called Freebase or Stalingrad, and an album would be out in april with collaborations from Robert Smith, David Sylvian and Will Oldham. "

Update: False. See the complete story at Ananova. Just a mix-up between the Peter Hook project and the Tweeker project.

  • "Dots" had third week US sales of 4,441, up slightly from last week. Total US sales so far: 20,495. I have the regional sales breakdown info, which is pretty interesting, and I'll try to get that posted sometime this weekend.
  • (Thanks Dave)

  • More 'Dots' chart news:
  • "Join the dots already seems to be dropped out of the top 75 albums list in italy :( and even da hype lost 3 positions (now at 21)!!!! but i guess on that one you're not so disappointed : D what a disatrous week!!! "

    (Thanks Pietro)

"Join the Dots is now #79 in the official french album charts (#29 last week)."

(Thanks to Jean-François at Pictures of Cure)

  • Ugh, one more 'Da Hype' story to report:
  • "in this weeks edition of "Zone 02", a free weekly Brussels magazine, there's an interview with Junior Jack, in which he says some things about his production with Robert Smith. Here's the translation ( i'll do my best... ):

    "Single with Robert Smith

Q: Robert Smith sings on your album. Strange meeting of genres, don't you think?

A: I never thought:"Hey, i'm gonna call Robert to ask him to sing on one of my albums". The boss of Pias, my record label, met him in England. He let him listen to what i'm doing, and Robert thought it was cool. So he sent me a demo and told me:" If you don't like, just throw it in the litter bin." I thought that was so cool! So we made contact, and so...

Q: How did the recording in the studio go?

A: He hasn't changed. Red lipstick, mascara, black hair all messed up. I was very impressed. But he is a very humble man. After 5 minutes, i forgot i was commanding a star."

He also mentionned Siouxsie earlier in the interview. Pretty fucked up, no?"

What, the song? Yeah that's one way of putting it. Or do you mean Robert? He must have been! The only way to explain such a hideous "song". : )

    (Thanks Laurent)

  • Cure cover:

And more on that Brit Awards cover:

"YOUNG BRITS PLAY TRIBUTE TO THE CURE AT AWARDS

Last Night at the BRIT AWARDS : JAMIE CULLUM (24) and KATIE MELUA (19), both with top 10 albums currently in the UK charts played a jazzy cover version of THE LOVECATS live on stage. Full story & picture can be found here: http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,4-2004080317,00.html. It was nice to see The Cure represented in this way. Having been snubbed yet again beacuse...Yes, Duran Duran got yet another life time achievement award for doing sod all in the last 10 years!). Jamie Cullum was interviewed on Breakfast TV this morning and said the he was only 3 when Lovecays came out, so he wasn't aware of the song itself, but knew of The Cure and it was good to perform a 'Classic'."

  • Curespotting:
  • "A CURESPOTTING Last night on one of Australia's most popular tv shows ROVE LIVE the female singer JEWEL was on and did an interview with the host ROVE, she said her latest new album was inspired by the music she grew up enjoying, she said RUN DMC as much as The Cure.

I did a search for Jewel mentioning The Cure as an inspiration to her latest music, looks like last night was not the first time she has mentioned The Cure. I found this on the internet, though I'm not quite sure who wrote it.

There is a rundown on the songs on her newest album 0304 (I think it was released mid 2003) and for the song Sweet Temptation it says this: This is a fast-paced, sensual love song with eerily beautiful and kind of dark lyrics intended to be in the style of The Cure.

Jewel also mentioned The Cure in 2003. What kind of music do you usually listen to? JEWEL: I like the Cure. I like the Chili Peppers. Sarah Vaughn. Nina Simone. Springsteen. Van Halen. "

    (Thanks Jim)

"this is the information of the radio shows in Mexico City.

The past tuesday 17th February, in the Mexico City radiostation Best 102.5 fm, www.best.fm, in their show called Best Live, their played the SHOW concert, among songs they talked something about the show, the ´92 era, the lineup, the members, the WISH tour and at this time only CURE concert in Mexico at Monterrey in 16th June 1992, the SHOW was not aired completly, because the show last 1 hr, and the next friday 20th February in their show Best Beat during 2.00-3.00 pm Mexico city time they'll play CURE songs mixed by a DJ. and in their air daily shows the announcers often talked about the Coachella show, and CURE's importance. Besides, in 98.5 fm Radioactive www.985.com.mx, they talked frequently on Coachella concert and they assure the best song in the brand new Blink 182's album is All of this, and played 311's cover of Lovesong with very good comments and saying Lovesong is a excellent song wich is so good no matter music kind is played.

The JOIN THE DOTS box set isn't yet available by now in the recordstores here in Mexico City, only in the Tianguis del Chopo (open-air market), the recordstores waiting for the release until March.

"In the March 4th issue of Rolling Stone (with Beyonce on the cover), Join the Dots is number 4 on their hot list with them saying " What's better than one new Cure album? Try four new Cure albums, composed of rare material and B sides-most of it from the groups more experimental and tortured early days". "

    (Thanks Dave)

"This is a cute website that takes your input of text, and 'sings' it for you using clips from songs for each word. If you try the word 'forest' you'll find a familiar voice. Who knows, there might be more cure hiding in that database... I know I've already made a couple suggestions for words that were still missing, using cure songs...

"well, i have been a cure fan since forever. here is the story, i am an army recruiting station commander and i always have the cure playing in my station in central california. the guys dont always like it but i'm the boss and well, too bad. Last week, i put join the dots on all day. close to the end of the day 3 young college students walked by the office and just stopped dead in their tracks. they walked in and asked what group was playing on the stereo. everyone in the station kinda paused for a second and all of a sudden they all at once said, "that's The Cure!" to make it short, they sat down for about an hour listening to the music, i chatted them up and talked about cochella (and the army of course.) Well, two of them are joining next week and they are all going to cochella. The funny thing is not one of them had heard more than a couple of songs from the cure and now they are asking me for the entire run down of the discography. BAM, add 3 more cure fans courtesy of the us army."

    (Thanks Tompallc)

  • Cure cover...on the Brits!:
  • "I just watched jazz munchkin Jamie Cullum and Radio 4 favourite Katie Melua romp through 'The Lovecats' at the Brit awards. Never before has it sounded so much like a Chas and Dave cockney knees up. Did they rehearse it for ten minutes before the show? Fie, for shame."

    (Thanks Teepee)

"In a coup that only The BRIT Awards could pull off, organizers have secured No.1 Chart sensation Katie Melua and new-jazz pioneer Jamie Cullum to perform a sensational duet. What was it?! a rather appauling mixed up cover of lovecats no bass solo!"

    (Thanks to Craig at SimonGallup.com)

"jamie callum and katie melua did a pretty nice jazz cover of the love acts on the brits tonight. their usually repeated tommorrow in the middle of the night."

    (Thanks Kitty)

  • As I've noted below, Passport has added a 5th auction for all bands, so you still have 2 chances to buy tickets. Also, the ticket scams are back and worse than before, so beware. The ONLY way to get tickets are from the 5 Ebay auctions and the competition. Please report all ticket offers/scams to Passport (:info@musicpassport.org).

  • Looks like the Werchter rumor is false:
  • "Rock Werchter has just officially announced a part of their line-up at www.rockwerchter.be . And the sad news is: The Cure is not in the list.

There was already a rumour before the announciation that Robert Smith was somehow misinterpreted at his BBC interview, confirming the the Cure show at Werchter, and that it was far from sure that they would play at Rock Werchter at all, and is was sure that they would not be in the upcoming list of confirmed bands... The second thing became reality, now let's hope the first thing won't. The source of these rumours, a moderator of a forum-site called Stinkylittlegods (www.stinkylittlegods.be, dutch only) sais at the Rock-Werchter forum he gets his information by simply mailing the right person at the right time. According to him the source of VRT Teletext was the newspaper "de Morgen", who's source was probably some forum. He failes though to say who he has mailed exactly and what was the exact reply he got. The same guy also said that there surely would be a the Cure show in Belgium. But who is he to know all that "for sure"?

(Thanks Marco, Velvet Goldmine, Stephan and Eric)

  • Cure Barfly mention in The Mirror:
  • "I have attached this cutting from The Mirror (a national British newspaper) regarding the upcoming Barfly gig."

    (Thanks Simon)

  • Cure cover/mix/sample thing:
  • "MTV UK are currently playing a variety of these cross-mixes over all of their channels (i.e. MTV, MTV Base, MTV2 etc etc). For anyone unfamiliar with these dumb mixes, they're always at least two songs by different artists put together to make one song, such as the quite often played Christina Aguilera VS The Strokes, where they use the vocals from Genie In A Bottle and the music of some Strokes song whose name I have forgotten.

They're doing some sort of "special" week this week featuring a whole load of these mixes and I've spotted twice now a pretty bad mix using The Cure. It's actually billed as Busta Rhymes VS The Cure, song title is Lullaby Eyes (A Miss Minx Mix).

It's basically just all of Lullaby including the vocals, with Busta Rhymes wittering away about something or other over the top of the bits where Robert isn't singing. Not so much a mix, more like something anybody with a two-track tape-recorder could produce by playing two tapes at once and recording the results. It's sort of like the musical equivalent of a tank driving over a beautiful flower, Busta Rhymes is, of course, providing the tank on this occasion."

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

  • Curespotting:
  • "I was watching MTV last night(yes, kill me) and there was this segment on the Lostprophets and one of the band mates mentioned The Cure as an influence to the band. They then showed a video of theirs and you can't see the influence at all. Well I think they suck but it's still a curespotting!"

    (Thanks m0z0rder)

  • Have I mentioned that you really should run out and buy the new Church album 'Forget Yourself' ? It just continues to get better with each listen. 'Lay Low' is the best Church song since, well, 'Numbers' on the last album. : ) And don't forget to support the live shows next month.
  • I'm casting my vote now for The Church as opening act on the 2004 tour, maybe even a triple bill with All About Eve too. It will never happen, but it's fun to dream, isn't it? : )

  • Why no updates since last week? Mardi Gras started on Friday. Need I say more? Anyway, I'll squeeze in COF updates inbetween the parades and uploading all of my MG photos. And no, they are not of the "Skanks Gone Wild". : )

  • New 'POY' update:
  • "I got the Perfect Day soundtrack last week. I must say I am not too impressed with the new Pictures of You. I think it strips away the charm of the original and leaves nothing but a mediocre song. It might grow on me though."

"Just to let you know that "Join the Dots" is at # 22 on the Greek charts! Not bad for a box set!!"

    (Thanks Vagelis)

"In the weekly Spanish newspaper "El Pais de las Tentaciones", which is sold together with El País on Fridays, Join the Dots is in number 6 in the chart of the most sold albums (the list is made by the writers of the newspaper)."

Update: "Well, some of that info is not correct: "El Pais de las Tentaciones" is a suplement included every Friday with the newspaper "El Pais"; they talk about music, movies, art and many other things; well, last Friday the Dots were number 6 in a list, but not in the "most sold albums" chart, it was a list the music critics from that newspaper made with their favourites every week (below it was that "best sellers" list and the Dots were NOT in it). The previous week, the Dots were number 2 in that critics list. Also they included a little review in the previous page.

(Thanks to Sharon of Charlotte Sometimes and Dani)

  • For those still looking for 'Dots' in Arkansas:
  • "For anyone in Arkansas and especially NE Arkansas, Hastings Book and Video is now stocking (finally) Join The Dots. Its at a very good price too at $45.60. I picked mine up today at the Jonesboro Hastings and am still soaking it in. "

  • Cure cover:
  • "A band called "Billionare Boys Club" was the house band on Last Call with Carson Daly and they performed The Cure's Just Like Heaven on Friday night's show."

  • Curespotting:
  • "Thought I would help add a bit for your cure spotting. I was watching CNN here in Maryland on 2/13 and they were doing a spot about Human Sexuality for Valentines Day (how much more men think about sex than women, how fantasies between men and women compare, etc.). During the segment they played an audio clip of Hot! Hot! Hot!."

    (Thanks Todd)

"Yesterday was TRL's Valentine's Day special and the guest stars were Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore for 50 First Dates. Adam started talking about the movie's soundtrack and said how he wanted an 80's/Caribbean vibe for the movie and that they had lots of bands come in and make covers of some songs, so of course they talked about 311's cover for Love Song and showed a clip of the video, they didn’t really say much about the Cure though. A couple minutes later as Drew came walking in for the first time, they played a cover of "Friday I'm in Love" in the background...I had never heard that one so I don’t know whose cover it was but it wasn’t all that bad."

    (Thanks Diandra)

"I just wanted to fill you in a little on that Lovesong remix you reported on Jan. 24. I ordered the record, and got it yesterday. I don't believe the vocals were rerecorded. I'm almost positive they're the acoustic recording from Greatest Hits. It is a really good remix though."

    (Thanks Charles)

  • The official site has been update with password and links for the Coachella ticket pre-sale that runs until tomorrow night. Sorry I didn't get this up sooner, but don't worry, there's no reserved seating.
  • Also, KROQ is giving away a bunch of tickets. So expect an invasion of the KROQ KIDZ at Coachella.

    (Thanks Caro, Shane and David)

  • 311 getting lots of airplay with 'Lovesong':
  • "311 is getting massive airplay here in Tampa. It's been the number 1 or number 2 slot in the top 5 at 9 on the local "New Rock" station. I swear they're getting more airplay than when the song came out. It pisses me off 'cause the DJ says 311's Lovesong!! AHHHHH!! It's one of those happy / sad moments in a Cure fan's life! Evidently Adam Sandler likes the Cure 'cause they're in a lot of his movies."

Well, I don't know about that. 'Lovesong' was The Cure's biggest American hit, getting all the way to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart, so it got plenty of airplay. Remember who kept them out of the #1 spot? Yep, Janet Jackson. Now that's a reasonable and legitimate reason to dislike her. : )

    (Thanks M.)

  • A bit more about the Cure at Werchter rumor:
  • "1. VRT text had the story on their Teletext yesterday evening and this morning but later on today they got it off.

    2. Studio Brussel (alt radio) got it yesterday in their Popnews and asked ClearChannel if this message is confirmed but nobody gave any comment.

Note that Metallica plays friday the second and Bowie plays at sunday the fourth at the main stage so saturday the third is left open for the top of the bill."

    (Thanks Stephan)

  • The Cure are on INHD again:
  • "Saw where they were going to show the Cure Berlin concert again in high definition on cable channel INHD tonight {2/12} at 11:00 pm eastern and again tomorrow {2/13} at 3:00 am eastern. Just in case anyone would be interested in viewing again or for the first time. "

    (Thanks Foilball)

  • Did anyone get the 'One Perfect Day' soundtrack?
  • "I was wondering if you have the One Perfect Day soundtrack yet, and how the new Pictures of You is. I noticed at HMV Aus. that the single disc says: Pictures Of You - Robert Smith; and the double disc says: Pictures Of You (PaulMac Mix) - Robert Smith. Do you know if these are two different versions with the first being mixed by Robert; or is it the same remix on both cd's. It's a little pricey for one song, but what can you do."

    (Thanks Tommy)

  • While we still don't know where The Cure will be playing this summer, we do know one place where they won't:
  • "just to let you know what our local newspaper "l'arena" wrote today..... L'arena is the newspaper of Verona (a city in Italy between Milan and Venice but maybe for cure fans it's better to know that it is very near to Treviso) and it titled WHAT YOU WON'T HEAR IN ARENA THIS SUMMER, blaiming the city administration that wasn't able to find an agreement with Verona's promoter EVENTI who had found an agreement with THE CURE (and many others) to let them play in Arena ( very famous roman amphiteatre, not like colosseus but very similar to the amphiteater of Orange (the one in the ORANGE VIDEO). During the last year many artists came in Arena, among the others Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Bjork. The quarrel is about the destination use of the amphiteater, because it's directed by a group that want the arena to become a sort of "temple of the Opera" and so rock - pop concerts are not welcome. I guarantee that the Cure in arena would have been a really grat event, maybe better than ORANGE!!!!!"

    (Thanks Pagilio)

  • Anybody know of a link between Robert and Elvis Presley, other than Junkie XL?
  • "I am a spanish fan who needs a little help to try to win a competition (a radio quiz) because the prize are the latest Cure's cds. Could you tell me: What is the music relation between Robert Smith and Elvis Presley?, that's the question. I am searching almost hunting the answer but I still haven't found it (except that both appears in JXL albums, but thats not the right answer)."

    (Thanks Jose)

    Updates:

"Elvis's grandfather's name was Robert Smith"

    (Thanks Anjaela)

"Elvis performed a Duet with Sinatra. Sinatra performed "Together" with BING CROSBY and Dean Martin. Bing Crosby did a duet with Bowie on his 1977 Christmas Special. Robert and Bowie did a Duet in 1997."

    (Thanks J)

"This is a hunce but I think Elvis died on August 16 1977 which I think is the date the cure won the local battle of the bands. Not sure because I don't have the gig list info since I am at work. But I am pretty sure that is it. If not I bet that 1977 has something to do with it

    (Thanks Eric)

  • Curespotting:
  • "A bit of Curespotting, that's pretty nice for us guys. Over at Sports Illustrated's web site, they have a section for the latest swimsuit edition. Well, the very first model in the list, May Anderson, lists the Cure as what she is listening to right now on the left side of the page. Thought the male visitors to your site would appreciate that. Here's the link. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/2004_swimsuit/gallery/may/ "

"In the March 2004 issue of Blender, there are no fewer than three Cure spottings - a review of Earl Slick's "Zig Zag": "Robert Smith's "Believe" is more hauntingly poignant than anything the Cure have done in a decade"; a review of "Join the Dots": "Aside from their outsider appeal, "Join the Dots" proves that the Cure's other trump card was Smith's misery-drenched knack for gleaming pop melodies"; and a quarter-page ad for the box set as well."

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain"

  • The second pair of Barfly tickets went for $5,136.73!!! The second to last pair are now up, and are currently $1,253.45. Bid high, bid often. You'll only have one more chance after this. : )

  • After only one week, "Dots" has dropped out of the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, with second week sales of 4,383. Total US sales so far: 16,048. Ouch!

  • Some better chart news:
  • " Join the dots is down at the 8th spot on CDuniverse top sellers, but it still remains no.1 in the little box in the home page! strange! And it entered the Italian album chart at #50.

Also, Dots entered the Billboard Top Internet Albums chart at #8 last week."

  • Hey, I told you all about how great the Clinical Prescriptions book is, and if you didn't believe me, maybe you'll believe Chris White:
  • "Delphine sent me the French Cure book called 'clinical prescription 76-87 (isbn 2-9520081-0-8) it's a great book. As one of the oldest fans in town, even I haven't seen 80% of the photos. I would highly recommend you try to get a copy. www.lavoixdusilence.com"

  • Are the Cure the best "80's" band? Do we even consider them an "80's" band? You decide:
  • "I haven't seen any news on bbc sites or radio re: your question about the belgium festival. but there is a vote for best 80's band on the bbc website. pixies, smith or cure. the cure a losing so c'mon and vote vote vote boys and girls! http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/news/"

  • Cure cover:
  • "In case anyone's interested, I'm hosting a band's version of "A Forest" on my website. It was recorded quickly last night as an audition piece for that Release the Bats Pornography tribute CD. Like I said it was recorded pretty quickly and pretty much 1 take, but I think it turned out pretty interesting. Not to mention unlike most bands this is their first attempt at a cover. Just in case anyone's curious in checking it out....

  • New article scans from Alternative Press and Rockstar (better one coming soon).
  • (Thanks Angie)

And here's a scan of a 'Dots' review from Magic magazine, and a bit of a translation:

"Don't have enough time to translate everything but it basicly say that this boxset is really demonstative of the evolution of "singles" : in the 70's/80's it was a Must and all the bands were taking a lot of care of this musical support, including really good songs on the B sides. Since couple of years the Singles are a real fake and nobody take care about it. The only thing you have in extra is the same song developped into many remixes, really often not famous. And that's true (even if I really like this JTD), that the 2 first CD are much more interesting. the 2 last are good but I've noticed that after few listening I'm jumping some songs, as I listen the 2 first CDs in one time. They finished the article with saying that JTD is much more than a boxset for fans, it is an historical document telling the story of a slowly dying industry."

    (Thanks Martin)

  • Cure to play Werchter Festival?
  • "From a reliable source with the Belgian quality newspaper De Morgen, this message came today.

Robert has confirmed in a BBC interview The Cure will play for the 5th time at the Werchter festival in Belgium this summer (formerly known as Torhout/Werchter). So July 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

He also said the new album is the ‘hardest’ The Cure have ever released (meaning : loud dirty guitars !!, courtesy of Korn producer Ross Robinson)

Other names for Werchter : David Bowie, Metallica, Korn, Kosheen, Air, Lamb, Monster Magnet, The Thrills, Belle and Sebastian and maybe The Pixies. "

Anybody see or hear this BBC interview?

    (Thanks Pete)

  • MTV actually has a story about the remastered albums:

Seminal goth-pop band the Cure will re-release their first five albums with lots of bonus material in May. Three Imaginary Boys (1979), Boys Don't Cry (1980), Seventeen Seconds (1980), Faith (1981) and Pornography (1982) have all been digitally remastered, and none of the expanded tracks will duplicate songs from their recently released box set, Join the Dots: B-sides and Rarities, 1978-2001. Additional Cure reissues will be released later in the year. ..."

I didn't think 'Boys Don't Cry' would be included, but maybe it is. For those who missed it, the first bits of info (catalog #'s, price, release date) about the remasters was posted on Jan. 29th.

    (Thanks Jeff)

"Just thought I might drop this little funny bit of Curespotting. Here in Seattle for years we had a local sketch comedy tv show called "Almost Live" (Incidentally Billy Nye The Science Guy got his start there). Anyhow I caught a rerun from 1992 of an episode where they did a bit called the "Dysfunctional Family Home Shopping Network". One of the items was the "Runaway Teen Travel Kit". Included in the kit were standard issue army boots, handwritten suicide note, sleeping bag, duffle bag, and compact disc albums by The Cure and Depeche Mode. I was laughing my ass off. I'm gonna try to get a audio file of it to you. Its absolutely hilarious."

    (Thanks Eric)

"This was more of a "only a Cure fan" would notice Cure spotting...

Last night (Tuesday the 10th) on Wheel of Fortune's couples week the final puzzle was a phrase... and the letters the couple had before the 10 seconds to guess began were this:

    M _ _ _ E

    S _ ME _ _ _

Now this wasn't hard to me. Actually it was very obvious to me. But the couple didn't get the puzzle, and Sajack went on to state what a hard puzzle it was...

but as I'm sure I don't have to tell you, the phrase was: "Maybe Someday"

Sigh... too much time on my hands."

    (Thanks J.)

"saw this in today's boston edition of the commuter paper "metro". it's an article about tower filing chapter 11. the photo with it is of an employee restocking the cure section. jtd is clearly seen, as well as hits and galore. cool! i'd bet that she asked to be photo'd in that section vs. limp bizkit or something."

    (Thanks Brian)

"I was watching Comedy Central, and they had the old Ben Stiller show from '92. Anyway the show does parodies of real commercials. This commercial was for life insurance, the guy in the fake commercial said he traveled with the Grateful Dead for 400 shows (and it showed him looking like a Deadhead and talking to the fans, anyway at the end of the commercial he says "I'm going to start traveling with the Cure" and it shows him looking like Robert and a "fan" looking like Robert and the salesman says "...now it doesn't cover suicide" (In reference to the life insurance policy) I gave me a chuckle..."

"Interview with Sophi (one of the best albums of the year so far) about The Cure as he used to be label mates with them (Fiction) when he was in God Machine. Might be interesting?

    http://www.sophiamusic.net/

There's a whole bunch of new interviews on the site. One of the interviews is an overview of the records that formed Robin's musical taste. There's some funny information in there about what The Cure's '17 seconds' means to Robin. You'll need to understand some French though."

  • Update on the 'Pornography' tribute album:
  • "I just got an update on the 'Porngraphy' tribute being worked on by Release The Bats, a label out of Sweden. It is a vinyl only release, covering the entire Pornography album, song for song, in order. It will be out this summer (hopefully) and here is the track listing so far:

    1. swann danger - one hundred years

    2. TURN PALE - a short term effect (my band!)

    3. cut city - the hanging garden

    4. ? - siamese twins

    5. ? - the figurehead

    6. sixteens - a strange day

    7. a trillion barnacle lapse - cold

    8. ? - pornography

...as you can see, there are tracks still open, if someone wants to do them... it's mostly a more post-punk sort of comp, so if you feel you are appropriate, why not contact them and ask to be on it!

  • Two day passes for Coachella are going up for pre-sale from today at 10am (pacific time I presume) until sunday morning at 10pm at Ticketmaster. Prices are $140.00 plus $2 for charity. Also, they are offering a pre-sale on 3 day camping for $25 per person. The password for both offers is CINCO. Please note that single day tickets ARE NOT up for pre-sale, and will go on sale Feb. 14th at noon (pacific time).

  • Coachella has put up the confirmed list of bands for this year, and it's very impressive. While most of the "big names" that were rumored turned out to be false, they have added The Rapture, The Stills, Stereolab, Death Cab For Cutie, Howie Day, Phantom Planet, Paul Van Dyk, Ash, Stellastar*, The Jesus & Mary...I mean Black Rebel Motorcycle Club : ), and many more. Just a fantastic lineup!

  • To complete yesterday's report, "Dots" has debuted on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at # 106, with first week sales of 11,557 (plus 108 for the previous week, from the stores that broke the street date). Total US sales so far: 11,665.

  • Well, the first pair of tickets for the Barfly show ended up going for $3,487.45 . Yes, it's crazy, but it's great for Shelter and War Child. Now get this, the second pair went up yesterday and are already at $4,680.53!!! If the price is this high for the first 2 pairs, what will the final pair go for?

  • And here's a new article from Aversion, with an update on the new Levinhurst album:
  • Cure Founder Goes Solo in Levinhurst

    Feb 05, 2004

Cure founder Lol Tolhurst will rejoin the music world in March.

Joining forces with singer Cindy Levinson, Tolhurst combines electronic and organic sounds in the act's debut, Perfect Life, due out in March from Full Contact.

Tolhurst cites musical trends such as the new wave revival that's made his early work with The Cure chic again as the inspiration for his return to music.

"Listening to new artists utilize the sound I helped develop inspired me to reach now for new sounds in the studio," he said in a statement. "The finished CD, Perfect Life, is easily the most exhilarating project I've been able to work on since the early Cure records."

    (Thanks Karen)

  • Cure cover:
  • "Just to let you know that yesterday at around lunchtime ( feb 5th) Lost Prophets were on the Jo Whiley show (BBC Radio 1) and did an acoustic cover of boys dont cry... it was a pretty bad cover, but nevertheless, it was a bit of good publicity for The Cure. Listen to it here."

  • First actual US tour date? The Cure are penciled in for Aug. 15th at The Woodlands in Houston, Tx. :
  • "Just got some interesting info from a inside source...apparently the cure are on the schedule at cynthia post pavilion in houston for the date of 8/15 listed under "pending". "

Just remember that this has NOT been confirmed yet, so don't go buying your plane tickets today. But this is a good time to start calling your friends who work at US amphitheatres, and ask them to start watching the schedule. : )

Update: There seems to be a bit of confusion about the tour. The May 2nd show at Coachella IS NOT the start of the US tour or even part of it. So no, they will not be in the US from May through August. Even the Swing Tour wasn't that long! : )

    (Thanks Jeff)

  • Passport wants the ticket scam e-mails from ebay:

  • 'Dots' has entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at #106. Boy, was I overly optimistic on this! I figured they could get in the Top 50. But I guess we shouldn't be surprised, since there was almost no promotion for it. Does anyone have the actual Soundscan numbers? Anyway, read about it at Yahoo.

  • Here's an english translation of that article from Brazil that I posted yesterday:
  • "I thought you'd be interested in a translated version of the brazilian Join The Dots review you posted in the curenews section of COF today. It might contain some errors, but at least more ppl will be able to read it. Here it goes :

THE CURE OPENS THE LOCKER WITH "JOIN THE DOTS"

The new boxset from the Brittish band presents 70 songs, between unreleased and rare.

Twenty three years of rock generate a good amount of extras, espacially if the band goes through a lot of changes like The Cure did, althought,in all these years, Robert Smith was always the backbone of the group. Finishing the contract with the label Fiction, Smith resolved to clean the locker before move on, and the result was the boxset "Join The Dots : B-Sides and Rarities,1978-2001" that is being released in the abroad and, luckily enough, will see the light of day here in Brazil (the luxuous triple dvd TRILOGY was released here by ST2).

Singer always preffered the B sides of the compacts.

Smith applied in his own band the theory he created for the B sides while we was still a student in a catholic school buying music, the B side song, the one which was left out of the album, was the one that would trully show how the album would be, if it would be worthy to have it.

"The A side was the right bet, but the true identity of the artist was in the B side" says Smith, "There was where we could find if it would be worthy to get the album".

"Join The Dots" puts together 70 lost songs in four cd's, a lot of pictures and comments about every song by Smith himself, some very rare, like the covers for The Door's "Hello, I love you" and Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze", originally recorded for a tribute album for the artist. It also brings remixes and new versions for well known songs such as "A Forest" and "10:15 Saturday Night".

One can also see the clear influence of the literature in Smith's compositions. Cure's first success "Killing an Arab", it's already known, came from the book "The Foreigner" by Camus. Besides it, "A Letter to Elise" come from Jean Cocteau, "How beautiful you are" from Baudelaire and "Adonai", from Shelley.

The well known crazy vein of the songwritter is also present, in songs recorded under the influence of different substances, in one song, a part of the keyboard lines is played by a dog, because the official keyboardist, Lol Tolhurst, was lying uncounscient in a corner of the studio. Smith talks about the constant changes in the band and admits that he recorded some songs alone "to avoid discussions".

Chapter closed, Smith plans to go on with the band. A change for someone who was constantly promissing a retirement year after year.

  • "Just a short message to let you know, and those who should be interested, that Fnac Leuven ( and so i guess all other Belgian Fnac's ) have loads of JtD's in stock at the price of 48,09€, which is, i think, a bargain. And for those who are still hesitating whether they should buy it or not... yes, you definitly should!!"

    (Thanks Laurent)

"No news from Chile about a local release of "Dots", therefore I bought the US version from CD Universe for USD 38.49 + 9.90 for normal air shipping (5 days with no problems). I think it's a good option for latin fans and even Canadian fans instead of ....... CAD 79.99????"

    (Thanks Francisco)

"Just to let you know that JTD is for sale at Fnac Portugal for 52.50 €."

    (Thanks Claudio)

"Following what has been said about the price of JOIN THE DOTS in Canada, I can proudly tell you that I ordered my copy for 65.55$ CAN at Amazon.ca, shipping & handling included. At the current exchange rate (see oanda.com), that makes 49.20$ in U.S. dollars -- so it's not that bad after all, everything considered."

    (Thanks Sebastien)

"Just wanted to say that those of you in Australia who managed to get a copy of JTD are part of a select few! I pre-ordered my copy from Sanity on the 20/1/04, and have been waiting patiently all week only to be told today that Universal, the distributor of JTD in Australia, have in fact run out and that I will have to wait 2-3 weeks for the next shipment!! You would think that by pre-ordering you were guaranteed a copy but obviously not. I would like to know how Universal allocated JTD, as I find it hard to believe they didn't even have enough copies to cover the pre-orders. Out of interest I also rang a few HMV stores in Sydney and they too had not received their copies."

    (Thanks Brett)

Part of the ceremony featured a video montage of career highlights, shown both on t.v. and over the 'gardenvision' screen for those in attendance. • 'Dots' in Canada:
  • "I'm writing from Toronto, Canada, and was very disappointed to find that the retail price in HMV and Sam the Record Man was $79.99 -- which, when compared with US prices like those at "Best Buy", is an inordinate rippoff. As most Canadians know, we generally pay the same numerical price when something is new, compared to the US. For example I bought the latest Radiohead CD for the standard $15.99 CAD, compared to the US's $16.99 USD; that's something like $12 or $13 I think. For some horrible reason, the price hasn't radically been dropped for shipment to Canada, and one store owner told me only 400 copies were shipped to Canada. I can understand Robert's frustration with his old distribution company. Anyway, for any Torontonians, "CD Replay" promises to take off at least ten bucks off HMV's price; unless there's a special, their prices always beat big chain store prices. They don't have any orders in, but think they'll have them by Thursday. They're also really nice."

Update: I just bought "Join the Dots" here in Toronto, Canada for $69.99 at CD Replay, a full $10.00 cheaper than everywhere else. The shopowner had at least another several copies, and deserves the business. It's located on Yonge Street, just south of Bloor Street."

  • New article from Bazil:
  • THE CURE ABRE O BAÚ EM ‘JOIN THE DOTS’

    01/02/2004

Além dela, “A letter to Elise” vem de Jean Cocteau, “How beautiful you are” de Baudelaire e “Adonai” de Shelley.

  • Any one know about this?
  • "A friend of mine, upon hearing "Snow In Summer" on the Cure box-set, swore that he had heard the tune before. Turns out he was right. He has a bootleg by the 10,000 Maniacs called "In My Tribe (Demos)" from '87. There is a track on there (the title is not listed, but it may be called "Biggest Charm") that is very similar to "Snow In Summer," both in song structure, bass line and percussion fills. There are some timing differences in the music and the lyrics are completely different, but overall the tunes are the same."

Update: "Actually, I believe someone posted something about the 10K Maniacs/Snow In Summer thing on the Stiff As Toys message board eons ago... with a link to a Real Audio version of the song in question, and I agree- the songs are too identical to be coincidental. I was actually kind of dissapointed when I read the notes to "Dots" and didn't find any reference to it. It would be interesting to find the timeline of the Maniacs demo as compared to when they were opening for the Cure, perhaps that could shed some light. I call for a full senate inquiry!"

Absolutely! And the guilty parties should be "prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law". Sorry, too much PTI . : )

"don't know if you've seen this, but there is a book called 'dog days' by daniel lyons. it's set in boston around the dotcom boom about a young compugeek who steals a dog owned by a north end mafioso wannabe. at one point he talks about how he and his girlfriend used to dance a 'xeno' (really 'axis', next to fenway park) and that they loved the cure. then he goes on to say how they listened to 'lovesong' in the car and he thought it was about their relationship. i thought, hey - that's cool. until i read the next line, which says: "as if anybody could find any sort of meaning in a cure song". :-(

then they split up and he goes home to listen to an extended version of lovesong!"

  • I keep getting e-mails telling me about this great new track that Robert sings on called 'Da Hype' and wondering why I haven't posted anything about it. Well, two things. First, I HAVE posted about it a few times going back to last year. The most recent being Jan. 10th and 13th when I posted the cd release info and a link to the video. Second, it's a horrible song! Worst thing Robert has done in a long time (in my opinion of course), and the less I have to post about it, the better. But here's one last post to satisfy all of you crazed 'Da Hype' fans. : )
  • "This is the scan of the Junior Jack/Robert Smith Da Hype single. The artwork is really nice and the cd is funny. It is a mini disc and the part around is transparent. The idea is very cool, I had never seen that before."

"Junior Jack - Da Hype, is getting quite a bit of airplay on Radio One in the UK. Good article and version of song available at http://www.ministryofsound.co.uk/Music/Singles/JuniorJack-DaHype.htm "

    (Thanks Colan)

And for those who wanted the lyrics (why???), here you go:

    I'm flying again
    It's so good to pretend
I'm in love with the end
I just want to be yours

    I'm falling away
It's so good to just play
    I'm in love with today
    Only want to be yours
I just want to be yours
    Only want to be yours

You and me, all there ever is
    You and me is anyone
You and me, nothing more than this
    You and me is everyone

    I'm floating in you
It's so good to be two
I'm in love with the view
I just want to be yours
    Only want to be yours

    I-I-I-I-I-I'm flying again
    It's so good to pretend
I'm in love with the end
I just want to be yours
    Only want to be yours
I just want to be yours
    Only want to be yours

Oh man, that's bad. Anyway, there's your big 'Da Hype' update. Aren't you glad you asked? : ) But don't waste your money on that junk, buy the new Church album 'Forget Yourself' instead (out today in the US, last week in Europe and Canada, and last year in Australia) and get tickets for the shows next month.

  • New "Dots" article from Belgian newspaper "La Dernière Heure"(Feb. 2nd, 2004). The highlighted part refers to a new deal with BMG in Europe. Still waiting for confirmation of the new US deal.

  • Billboard and Chart Attack have picked up the Robert/Chris Vrenna/Tweaker story, and add that Johnny Marr will also be on the album:
  • Smith, Marr Bolster Tweaker's 'Wakeup Call'

Former Nine Inch Nails drummer Chris Vrenna will release his second album under the Tweaker moniker on April 20. The forthcoming set, "2 a.m. Wakeup Call," will feature guest vocals from the Cure's Robert Smith, David Sylvian, Will Oldham and the Walkmen's Hamilton Leithauser, among others. Additionally, the Smiths' Johnny Marr guests on guitar.

Also lending voices to "2 a.m. Wakeup Call" are Jennifer Charles from Elysian Fields and Jonathan Bates, who performs under the name Mellowdrone. In a statement, Vrenna says the album was inspired by his wife's battle with insomnia. "She would bolt awake every night, strangely, at exactly the same time -- 2 a.m.," says Vrenna. "It led to me sharing her insomnia and I wound up staying up with her and discovered that when the world-at-large was fast asleep I had unearthed a wealth of creative energy in myself ... It's a nighttime record about things that keep us up at night."

Here is the track listing for "2 a.m. Wakeup Call:"

    "Ruby" featuring Will Oldham

    "Cauterized"

    "Worse Than Yesterday" featuring Mellowdrone

    "Truth Is" featuring Robert Smith

    "Remorseless"

    "Pure Genius" featuring David Sylvian

"It's Still Happening" featuring Hamilton Leithauser

    "2 a.m."

    "Movement of Fear"

    "Sleepwalking Away" featuring Nick Young

"The House I Grew Up In" featuring Johnny Marr

    "Crude Sunlight" featuring Jennifer Charles

  • 'Dots' around the world:
  • "Just letting you know that "Join the Dots" is finally available in Canada. I picked up my copy today--though it isn't officially released until tomorrow."

    (Thanks Joe)

"Without any trace of join the dots in Lausanne (Swiss) I wend to spend the week-end in Brussels (Belgium) to see one of my friend. It was actually quite hard to find J.T.D (unavailable in FNAC and Megastore : everything was sold) and I finaly found a copy in a small nice shop called "Caroline misique". The guy was amused to see the gigantic smile in my face and wish me a great time. Just wanted to say that despite few remixes that I don't like, I think it's a fabulous object and a collection of great music. I wish every band I love could have so much respect with people who like their music, and publish stuff like that. Thank-you guys."

    (Thanks Martin)

"Hello!! I am from Chile and today I received my "dots" box and I can not wait until go home to listen to each disc!!!!. Tonight I will get drunk listening to The Cure, just as I used to do when I was 19 (now I am 33) and carried my tapes everywhere. By the way, CD music did a very god job with my order!!!, two days under the due date. "

  • "I don't know if this was posted before, but I just finished a fabulous graphic novel, Blankets by Craig Thompson, that had a chapter entitled Just Like Heaven. In the chapter Craig's high school girlfriend sings it him while they are lying in bed. It's a really beautiful book and it that scene really captures the essence of the song."

"The alternative radio station for my area (Y100) had a contest about a song in the new Monster.com comercial. The song was "I Dig You" . One person who called in thought it was Blur! But finally a Cure fan called in and said what it was...but he messed up and said it was by The Cure. The DJ was nice enough to let him win though."

    (Thanks Asa)

"On ESPN's website, John Buccigross does a weekly hockey column and he answers emails from readers. This was in this week's column:

John, I'm about ready to leave for Air Force Basic training and need advice as to what CDs I should bring for the plane ride. Keep in mind this is the last music I will listen to for a while so make it good. Thanks again and look forward to checking in on you when I get out. Bill from Connecticut

I love Blink 182's new self-titled CD, Bill. Also take U2's "Joshua Tree," The Cure's "Disintegration," Ben Fold's Live CD, Fountains of Wayne's "Welcome Interstate Managers" and whenever I fly, the first CD I put in is REM's "Reveal." "The Lifting" is my all-time favorite airplane taking off song."

  • 'Dots' in at #13 in the UK:
  • "I have just seen on the BBC website that JTD has entered the official UK Rock Album Charts at #13. Not bad for a box set that would normally deter buyers through its price. Coincidentally, the song at #1 in the Rock Single Charts is 'Run' by Snow Patrol, released through none other than Fiction Records."

    (Thanks Paul R.)

  • New Robert interview on Polish radio:
  • "We had over 20 minutes new robert smith interview in polish radio program three this night, robert told about his childhood in crawley and first journey to london on concert when he was 17, about his first concert Mahavishu Orchestra and David Bowie on Station to Station tour about guitar learning with his older brother. Robert told that he is an optimistic man but he can't be in good mood all the time. When he was asked about the end of the cure he answered that this situation came from disintegration era when they recorded the album and robert didn't speak with the rest of the group later told the band that on 2000 Christmas it will be the end of the group but bloodflowers gave him so much happiness to play.

About his solo album robert said that is ready and will be able to add with new cure album (i'm not sure but it was strange translated and i didn't understand this phrase) and if it will be the european cure tour then they come to poland for sure and it will be very exciting to visit russia for the first time, when the redactor told that the cure gave people so much on concerts robert told him that it's fantastic to see these people around the scene and their faces when they are so happy "it's fantastic moment".

It's only the most important part of this interview because robert told about jimi hendrix, guitar lessons and his memories of polish concerts and the beggining of the group (Malice, Porl Thompson, Lol) too."

    Did anyone tape this?

    (Thanks Peter)

  • 'Trilogy' out on vcd:
  • "Thought someone out there might be interested to know that 'Trilogy' is available on VCD now, as well as DVD. I have spotted it here in Hong Kong, VCD capital of the world, as an officially licensed release. It is on three discs and sports the same art work on the cover as the DVD (albeit a CD-sized box). I should point out that it does not contain the interviews, purely the three live sets and encores. Priced at HK$65 (approx. £5 or US$8.50), so a fair bit cheaper. On another note, JTD has not yet appeared here. The clowns at HMV keep insisting that it is not released in the UK until mid-February, despite all my evidence to the contrary, and say it won't be here until the end of this month. Time to send an e-mail to Amazon.com, me thinks..."

    (Thanks Paul R.)

  • For everyone who has asked about 'Possession' lyrics, here you go:
  • After a small search, I came up with nothing official, so I composed my own version of the lyrics, after I bought the box set. This is what I hear:

    Possession

the other one feeds on my hesitation
    crawls inside my trepidation
buries his claws in my dislocation
    whispering me to lose control

I take a step and over my shoulder
his raw, white eyes shine wide and bold
his snow white thighs press close and cold
murmuring me to let him go...

    to let him go...

the other one thrives on my desperation
fills me up with my intoxication
sinks his teeth in my deviation
    softening me to lose control
I hold my mouth and taste his breath
    hissing, breathing up the scent
    snakes itself inside my head
sickening me to let him go...

to let him go... to let him go...

I take a step and over my shoulder
his pained white eyes shine wide and bolder
the same white thighs press close and colder
murdering me to let him go...

I try to resist the bruise of kiss
I twist to deny the blood of bliss
but I always feel myself becoming his
and the last thing I remember
it isn't me, it isn't me, it isn't me...
    but then, it never is...

    (Thanks Pyra)

  • Cure cover:
  • "Lullaby has been covered on a spanish film called "Lo mejor que le puede pasar a un cruasán" (The best thing it could happen to a croissant). The film is based in the book of the same title that has been a really best seller here in spain. The most incredible thing is that the song is performed by Santiago Segura, a comician-cinema director very very known here ("Torrente el brazo tonto de la ley-Torrente the law´s dumb arm " is his most known film). I´ve read the book (lots of laughts )and there´s no mention of the cure. The scene where the song is played is when the protagonist enters in a secret, bizarre and hidden kind of prostibule, the ambient and the song fit. Obiusly the cover is in english so it was impossible for me to know who was singing until the final credits, when read the name of Santiago Segura was a really really strange. "

"On MTV.it there's the presentation of a newcomer icelandic band, called "Bang Gang", and the first words are these: "Have you ever thought of being carried on the dance floor by gloomy notes and irreparably dark lyrics? Imagine Royksopp on a strong abstinence from Prozac, or Moby in Cure version, who happiness only losing themselves in the memories of the beautiful past times of disco music, surf rock or 80's electro pop". the direct link is http://www.mtv.it/music/emergenti/newcomer.asp?p_idnewcomer=02D2FE50C4AA4B868CBC0F4E929D5D5D "

  • Just a reminder that 'I Dig You' will be used for a Monster.com ad during the Superbowl today. It should air sometime in the third quarter.
  • Update: Nope, Moster switched their ads and aired 'I Dig You' near the end of the first quarter. Postman Frank is a star once again. : )

"As I'm sure you know the "I Dig You" ad from Monster aired in the first quarter... and the song was the focus of the entire spot. I didn't recognize it until I heard the Postman's vocals... and then I said "Holy shit!" out loud- as I didn't think the song would be that much the focus of the ad."

    (Thanks J.)

  • The first pair of tickets for the Barfly show are up for auction on Ebay. Please notice that the bidding is open to anyone, but the tickets must ship to a UK address. Good luck!

  • Billboard reports that Wilco and The Flaming Lips are now confirmed for Coachella, with Wilco playing on Cure sunday, but no confirmation of which day the Lips are playing. Coachella is supposed to announce the full lineup later today at their website. There should be another "big name" (possibly 2) announced for sunday, in order to match the Radiohead, Pixies, Kraftwerk lineup on saturday. It will be very interesting to see which of the rumors are true. : )
  • Update: The official announcement might not happen today, but watch for it sometime this week.

  • More of "Dots" around the world:
  • "Rocking Horse Records in Brisbane have 4 copies of JTD. They go on sale tomorrow and I have already lay-byed my copy. I will collect it on the way home from work. I have been a huge fan since the mid eighties but have still not heard about a third of these songs and the waiting is killing me.The price is AUD94.95. Roll on tomorrow....and fast!!! go go go."

    (Thanks Andrew)

"I just received the Join the Dots box set and it is brilliant! I also think it is hard to get in the Netherlands. The largest record store here, Free Record Shop, doesn't even have it, I heard from the head office. I finally ordered it via the Internet (bol.com).I'm also very impressed by the quality of the artwork and the package.

"Dots is available here in Valencia (Spain) in the FNAC stores (49,3 € ) since past monday. And in EL CORTE INGLES too (price in stores 60€ and 49€ online)."

    (Thanks Jorge)

"Join the dots was not available in Metropolis, the biggest music stores in Athens,up until Saturday 31 January. However I managed to find my copy at a local store,Record House, at 45 euros.A friend of mine bought it at "Gina" for 40 euros! -p.s: Fascinating version of "Doing the Unstuck", beautiful booklet,a perfect release...-"

  • Does anyone have the lyrics for Possession yet?

  • Curespotting:
  • "The Cure is in the February 19th issue of Rolling Stone (with The Beatles on the cover). There is almost a full page review of the Join The Dots Box Set (called "Lipstick Traces"). They gave it a pretty good review (3 stars).

In addition, there is a review of the Junkie XL album (which includes "Perfect Blue Sky" featuring Robert) and it mentions Robert briefly."

(Thanks to Dayna at A Foolish Arrangement)

"ABC Sports has been using Cure songs between action during the FBR Open golf tournament in Arizona. On Saturday they played 'Pictures of You', 'Lullaby' and 'Friday I'm in Love'. Hopefully they'll keep it up for Sundays round!"

    (Thanks John)

"Saturday mornings mean cooking programmes on BBC 2 and they obviously thought that The Cure and cooking go together. On the beeb's "Ever Wondered About Food?", In Between Days was played during their programme on cooking vegetarian (31-01-2004). Quite apt seeing Robert's a veggie. Ah, the joys of Tofu."

Note: Unfortunately, unless something has changed recently, Robert IS NOT a vegetarian.
