  • More on the TOTP2 performance and on voting for the 250th show:
  • "Back in 1983 The Cure performed Lovecats 3 times on TOTP. Twice around the time the single was released and once again for the Christmas special. I didn't see TOTP2 the other night to confirm which version they showed.

Another post mentioned the vote to show classic appearances? If it will help people see what each performance on TOTP looked like then I have loads of video stills from A Forest in 1980 to The 13th in 1996 including Lullaby on my website (www.asitelikethis.co.uk). Just click on the Video Stills link in the left hand frame.

Hope that helps people make their decision."

    (Thanks Ian)

  • Here's an update on what was aired on Top of the Pops 2 last night:
  • "Just saw totp2 they showed the cure playing lovecats with the wrong people who recorded it... porl was on 6 string bass ( wasnt that phil thornally?) Steve announced the cure as MAD Fat BOB & friends & no they arent going to a fancy dress party ...people... the caption at the bottom basically said "You might not believe it but the cure have had 5 top ten hits" then went on to list them. Robert's hair looked as though it had the fuck crimped out of it & he looked high as a kite. He stopped miming to the backing track. Andy Anderson & Lol looked wasted too. Then just before the end Steve Wright said "Robert over did it on the makeup. maybe he should chose a lighter shade of lipstick" what does that fat speccy unfunny curly haired al wanovich wet permlook cheesey smashy & nicey DJ know ?"

And you can see a 30 second clip of it in the TOTP2's video gallery.

    (Thanks Gary)

  • Now let's get TOTP2 to replay the infamous 1989 Lullaby performance:
  • "totp2 are asking for requests for their 250th show - I've emailed them to ask for the 1989 performance of Lullaby where the cameras were told not to go near Robert Smith because his make up was 'too scary'. Thinking you could put the word up on Chain of Flowers and get everyone to email them with the same request. if you go to www.bbc.co.uk/totp2 - there's a form for you to vote"

    (Thanks Ginge)

  • Cure cover:
  • "I saw a live band the other week called Stereovision who played a really great versions of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" and "10.15 Saturday Night". On their website http://www.peoplesound.com/artist/stereovision they list The Cure as one of their influences and also The Cure's "Pornography" as one of their favourite albums in their biography."

    (Thanks Dave)

  • Robert lists his Top Ten "Must Haves" in the latest issue of the fashion magazine Flaunt:
  • This is the poshy Robert Smith illustration on the back of this month's Flaunt magazine. On the top left you can read his Top Ten Must Haves. However if you can't read it well enough, which I doubt you can, this is what it reads:

"Must Haves written by Robert Smith of The Cure Illustrations by BEE

Robert Smith and his band have just released The Cure Greatest Hits, which contains 16 favorites as well as two brand new tracks. An accompanying DVD and VHS version is also out now. Below are a few things the lead singer loves. This Valentine's, why not forgo the usual flowers and candy and take a cue from Mr. Smith? If the Rover is a little out of your price range,we're sure your honey would love their new CD.

    1. Gretsch Silver Falcon
    2. my dad's homemade beer
    3. Apple Power Mac G4

  • More festival rumors:
  • "I've read in an Italian newspaper ("La repubblica") that The Cure are going to play this summer in Florence or in Rome (the article is not clear about it)! "

    (Thanks Alex)

"In the italian newspaper La Repubblica there is an article reporting how Rome and Florence are the italian cities where the merchandising of illegal music (?????)(live bootlegs...burnings...downloadings...etc)is very strong. For this reason the Italian Music Association (Assomusica) menaces that there will not be live shows in these two places this year.... the article ends with a list of shows programmed in Florence this spring-summer....and among Lenny Kravits and some others i do not remember, there were The Cure. I know it sounds too strange as Cure are not going on tour this year but...maybe they refer to Arezzo Wave that is one of the most important festivals round here and it's quit near to florence. That was all...not too much but...i'll cross my fingers!"

    (Thanks Sergio)

  • 'Just Say Yes' news:

" 'Just Say Yes' enters the official German alternative single charts at #13 this week."

    (Thanks Simon)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Not entirely sure if this has been mentioned before, but one of the "geeks" from the film "wet hot american summer" is clearly wearing a head on the door era cure shirt. the big inconsistency being that the film takes place in '81 (and even that minor realization drives the fact home that she may be a fairly accurate representation of most of us). painfully brilliant movie regardless."

    (Thanks Blue)

"Globo TV from Brazil is broadcasting the brazilian edition of the reality show "Big Brother", with 12 people locked inside a house for a couple of months. They have several kinds of people, and last friday, before the 84738200534th nervous breakdown of the day, the "alternative" character started to sing "boys don't cry" before starting to cry..."

    (Thanks BACO)

"There is a video on mtv latin america, that starts like close to me. with a closet . and as the door opens, instead of going into the closet it leads to a room full of depeche mode and the cure posters. the band is called catervas. i guess is from argentina. the song is cure esque a la inbetween days."

    (Thanks Enrique)

  • "Just to let you know that the Blue Monday comic has released their Valentine's Day special entitled Love Cats. Numerous Cure mentions include a discussion on if their music is dancable or not and a t-shirt. Just thought you'd like to know, besides the story is killer."

"the latest issue of NYT newspaper here in Finland features an interview of this latino singer Shakira and she names the Cure as one of her favourites. When asked about the favourite Cure song she replies that the guestion is too hard because there's so many but at the same time nervously hums Lovesong... and then I have another one as well: I was at a bar called Factory to see a band cover Social Distortion. Just out of curiosity I checked what their jukebox had to offer and there next to all these aerosmiths and ac/dc's there was the Top! Not the greatest hits or galore but the Top! Suddenly the place seemed much better!"

    (Thanks Antti)

    (Thanks Ryan)

"I just wanted to let you know that my hubby-to-be and I were watching The World's Most Expensive Vacations on the Travel Channel. They profiled St. Catherine's Court owned by Jane Seymour. They went on a tour of the castle and the grounds, talking about all that it had to offer at $21,000 a week.

One of the key things that they talked about was the Grand Ballroom and how it's acoustics were better than any studio in Great Britain, and how the artists felt drawn to it. They feel as if there is a muse in the castle. Then they showed a recent photo of Robert and Jane Seymour said that she has had The Cure as guests twice as well as Radiohead recorded OK Computer there.

Out of curiousity... I looked up through my albums to find that not only was Bloodflowers recorded there, so was Wild Mood Swings. (I didn't know that!) Anyways... it's nice to see the inspiration and creative setting for an album. Again, I'm truly in awe."

    (Thanks Jennifer)

    Feb. 7th

  • It looks like The Cure will be playing Glastonbury this year. Still unconfirmed at this time, but look for an official announcement very soon. Even NME has picked up on the story:
  • "Just been reading this weeks NME (England) and it says that The Cure are "strongly tipped" to play....along with Dido, the dream ticket????"

As soon as this Mardi Gras madness is over, I'll try to have a complete festival update. Look for that next week.

    (Thanks Raining_Down)

  • Explanation of that Missy Elliot track:
  • "Just thought I'd let you know the Missy Eliot/Cure track is a white label remix(basically the two tracks,"Lovecats" and "One minute man" mixed together) called "Aint no cure for the one minute man" which has been done by UK club DJ Errol th Peril. His previous work includes "Get your faith on", a similar idea mixing George Micheal's "Faith" and Missy Eliots "Get your freak on".Both have been aired on Sara Cox's Breakfast show on Radio One.The track will never be released, but is apparantly being used by club dj's.I cant find a down load of it,my opinion of it is that it's interesting, and its probably the first time in 5 years I've heard The Cure on Radio One. "

    (Thanks Colan)

  • 'Hits' chart update:
  • Germany - out of the German top 100 album charts.

Belgium - In its 11th week, G.H. is up to # 42 in the belgium Ultratop 40. david

  • Cure cover:
  • "RINOCEROSE, a french band, will release a cover of "M" on its next and third album "Music Kills Me" (release date in France : 26 february - Distribution : Sony Music). The cover is titled "Lost love", but it's really the Cure's "M". Musically, it sounds like a disco/house song, wich is quite surprising for a Cure cover ! 4 years ago, Rinocerose used to sample some pieces of Cure's songs in its first album "Le Mobilier", using "In your house" and "Three"."

    (Thanks Jerome)

  • Cure fan gathering in Berlin:

    (Thanks Amanda)

  • Curespotting:
  • "From the February 11th, 2002 issue of Newsweek, article title "Guitars Pickin' Daisies":

It's an incontrovertible fact that guys take up guitar to get girls. But look to your right. {There is a picture of a flowery guitar in the magazine}. How would you do strumming that? Better than you think. "More guys play them than girls," says Tish Ciravolo of her Daisy Rock Girl Guitars. Guys like Beck bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Mick Thompson, guitarist for metal outfit Slipknot. Jimmy Page got his at an auction (he outbid his wife). The appeal? The axes are three-quarter scale and made with basswood - much lighter than traditional mahogany. The neck is thinner, so it's easier to wrap fingers around. This makes it ideal for smaller frames and cramped tour buses. Still, rockers have a rep to defend. Even the Cure's Robert Smith, who favors mascara and hair gel, takes heat from bandmates for his heart-shaped piece. "They thought it looked softy," says Smith. "But then, they haven't got any soul"."

    (Thanks flyingdeer)

"I was watching the flyers vs the mighty ducks hockey game and at the begining they were showing footage of the last game of the flyers and in the backround they were playing burn."

    (Thanks Ross)

    "Brandy's Secret Marriage

Brandy has hit upon a unique way to hype her new album: The R&B singer-actress announced Tuesday that she's pulled a Janet Jackson and was married on the sly last year.

"I've fallen in love with a very warm, gentle, understanding and focused person," Brandy says in a statement. "This summer we married quietly. A new experience, a new day for me--I couldn't be happier!"

She and her groom, producer and songwriter Robert Smith (no, not the guy from the Cure), married so quietly that nobody knew anything about it."

    (Thanks Jim)

    Feb. 4th

  • A very Happy Birthday to ex-Cures Lol Tolhurst (who celebrated yesterday) and Matthieu Hartley (who celebrates today).

  • A bit more on the Missy Elliot/Lovecats track:
  • " Last evening on Canal + (french channel), the background music of a broadcast called "Plus de cinéma" was Missy Elliotts latest song with a sample of The Lovecats (and also a sample of Britney Spears I think)."

    (Thanks Jean-Francois)

"about that missy elliot/lovecats thing... in the common room in school someone was going through radio stations and one station was playing what sounded like a *very* bad version of the lovecats. dunno if she's used the same lyrics, but the bassline was exactly the same."

    (Thanks Glynis)

  • Curiosity update:
  • "CURIOSITY will be back on saturday the 23th march in one of their favorite belgian place : LE CAP VERT, in VISE (near Maastricht and Liège) It's the first show since september 2001 and the band is ready for another great show ! "

  • Curespotting:
  • "Hey I was just browsing the online magazine AskMen.com and they have a top 200 albums of all time.

The Cure's Disintegration was rated number 7 on their list of all time Alternative Albums. Looks like the editors have good taste!!"

"Watching Chicago's PBS show, "Wild Chicago" there was a segment, on this woman who makes these weird Cat masks out of real cat whiskers, and dear skin. All through the segment they were playing the "love cats", by our favorite band."

    (Thanks aew)

"i'm not sure if anyone's mentioned these before, but i have two curespottings from the tv show mystery science theater 3000. if you've never seen this show, it's basically about a guy and his robot friends who are stuck in space and are forced by mad scientists to watch really bad movies. in one episode (i can't rememebr which one) they show a dog growling. the dog's gums are red and black and they sort of look like lips, and mike says the dog must be a cure fan. another episode is about people who are building a secret missile on a military base by the beach. a man and his family are shown driving along the beach to the base, and to the tune of "killing an arab" crow sings, "driving down the beach with the kids in the car!" (like the line "standing on the beach with a gun in my hand.") the film is in black and white and the beach actually does look similar to scenes from the "killing an arab" video!"

    (Thanks Mel)

  • And finally (and for no particular reason), here's a look at The Cure in 1979 at the Reading Festival:
