Dec. 24th

(Before getting to the news, I just wanted to apologize for not updating over the last two weeks. It has been pretty slow lately and I've had some personal stuff to deal with, so the website sort of got lost in the shuffle. Anyway, I sincerly hope you all have a very Merry Christmas! )

  • The official site has been updated with the names of the comptition winners.

  • As mentioned before, German fans will get a very nice Christmas present from Radio Fritz. Now it turns out that all of us will be able to listen:
  • "some more detailed info, coming directly from the people at Fritz. they will indeed broadacst the Berlin Arena (16/04/00) show on Dec 25th @ 8pm German time. It will be the whole show minus 2 songs that Robert didn't want to have broadcasted.

    http://www.fritz.de for livestream!"

  • Roger works with Tuuli:
  • Tuuli House Band For Comedy Central Program

    Thursday December 07, 2000 @ 04:00 PM

    By: ChartAttack.com Staff

The lovely ladies in Tuuli have followed in the footsteps of fellow Canuck Paul Shaeffer.

They just came back from a five week tour of the U.S. and Canada. While they were there they spent three days in L.A. filming a season's worth of shows for Comedy Central's stand-up comedy showcase, Premium Blend. The Stylin' quartet were the "house band" and their song, "Who's The Fool Now?" is being used as the theme song.

You can catch Tuuli on the show over the next three months if you pick up Comedy Central or you can wait a couple of months and probably see it on The Comedy Network. The show is hosted by Canadian funnyman Harland Williams. Guitarist/vocalist Jenny told ChartAttack that working with the "Rocketman" was a hoot.

In other cool news our stunning May 2000 Stylin' models will be teaming up with their favourite Canadian band, The Black Halos, to release a split Christmas single of two songs that are doubtlessly going to join Rusty's "It's Christmas Time And I'm Poor" as Canadian Christmas classics.

The Halos recorded, "Homeless For Christmas." The Tuuli number, "You Better Know By Now What I Want For Christmas" features keyboard work by The Cure member Roger O'Donnell. Jenny is a huge Cure fan. She said that working with him was "a dream come true for this Canadian Girl."

  • News from Japan:
  • "Wowow, the satelite TV station in Japan will broadcast a program with The Cure on Thursday, 4th January 2001, 10:15 P.M.-11:25 P.M. It's titled "The Rock Master #3 - The Cure Live 1984". I can't find any information where it's recorded though... Wowow dropped a hint that it would be a rare recording!

And one more information related to The Cure...

Buzz, a rock magazine in Japan featured "The Best Rock Album 1963-2000" on their issue of January 2001. They chose 5 of the best albums each year, and the Cure's "Pornography" is chosen one of the Best in 1982. And in another feature, some editors chose their best albums in 2000 and "Bloodflowers" was included in their list."

    (Thanks Fusae)

  • Bloodflowers makes another Best of 2000 list:
  • "The current issue of the German Musikexpress features a top 50-hitlist of the best records of 2000. Bloodflowers places #32. There's a picture of the Bloodflowers-cover and a short positive review.

There's also a big article of the most important tours of the year. The Dream Tour is mentioned as well (with live-picture of Robert). "

    (Thanks Simon)

And here's that article about the Dream Tour:

"in the january 2001 issue of german magazine "Musikexpress" there is a Year 2000 flashback where they have short articles about the best live shows in 2000. This is what they wrote about the Dream Tour:

The Cure Robert Smith did announce it many times: The end of The Cure has always been near. But this time, after 24 years, he seemed to be serious. And so the numerous friends of sorrow made a pilgrimage to the halls and arenas to receive the deserved reward for the holding out throughout the years. For a last time The Cure came back to be the old Cure, the tortured and torturing, perfectly despaired Cure. Even on tour-fridays Robert wasn´t in love, at least not in a fulfilling one. Even after sunny springdays he placed "One Hundred Years" with the most terrific flashlight storm of showlight-history in the middle of the evening to set a sign: admission only with darkest mind! And as a matter of fact you could see indignant ladies grabbing for their handbags and life companions: "Come on, we´re out of here!" The Cure celebrated their own funeral without compromises. The egomanic Smith thought his work to be finished with the trilogy of "Pornography", "Disintegration" and "Bloodflowers" and this thread went bloodred through the show. The Cure made a noise and roared, howled and moaned, dreamed and floated brilliantly like they did some day ago. Big screens illustrated this with a color-rage and a tangled mass of pictures as if it was necessary to castrate the senses of "Clockwork Orange"-Alex once again. What kind of mass meetings are these, which release each one lost and forsaken but also somehow reconciled into the dark night? Cure concerts - there is this certain magic, I suppose. There was this certain magic."

    (Thanks Martin)

  • MCM are doing a top 10 albums, songs and films of the year poll. Bloodflowers is currently ranked 15th. I'm sure most of you will agree that this is unacceptable (especially when you see some of the bands ahead of them!), so get over there and vote!
  • (Thanks Zyklon)

  • And for those wondering about the current state of BF sales in the US:
  • 261,144 copies sold as of last week, and its selling around 600 copies a week right now.

    (Thanks Dan)

And here are the bands which will be playing on it (notice that Charlotte Sometimes is performed by Dave Blomberg (New Model Army) and his wife!) :

  • Pink Pig update:
  • "The Pink Pig site we'll be updated in the first half of january. This update will include the poll results and an announcement about the project's future. Thanks again to all the people around the world who made all of this possible and thanks a lot to The Cure for receiving it.

  • The latest news from The Cureheads:
  • "Thanks to everyone that made it to The Astoria. It was fun wasnt it ? Thanks to Phil our new sound engineer. Even though we were told we had to play the singles only... as we were worried that most of the West end clubby crowd would get bored, we carried on way past our cufew with "push" & "10.15"....getting revenge for the shoddy way in which the promoters dealt with both us and Depeche Made...why cant promoters ever get it right ? ( In Ireland they can ) OK we're not the Cure we dont expect to be treated like pop Idols, but we do expect a toilet within half a mile of the dressing room and at least somewhere to buy a coffee when the promoter cant be bothered to pull the rider together....and they forgot to take all the green smarties out..I just cant abide green smarties....how dare they ????? ......(Nick & Phil pull Gary away from his computer kicking and spitting Sean Takes over)...

Oh well he gets a bit funny now and again.... As we were going to tell you...we are currently in talks to take the cureheads to Argentina,Peru,Chile and brazil....Probabaly in The summer of 2001.... We're taking a break now until January when we go to Dublin on the 13th...we're going to go into rehearsals so that we can learn some of the tunes you have requested..including maybe someday, Chain of Flowers, Prayers for rain, Banana Fishbones and a few surprises...you can still use this board to ask for more... It's Gary's ambition with the band to break the Cure's record and go for a 4hr set at some point next year..maybe at the "Rocket Reunion III"

It's been a great year for us...we've had our 10th aniversary and played some great places meeting some fantastic people who have become friends...It's amazing how the Cure's music can do that..It seems that it means so many different things to so many different people....Some people seem to love what we're doing we make them smile and that makes us happy...some people hate what we do and say that we are parasites... We couldnt give a Fuck!!!! If we can make people smile then we'll carry on.....as Gary always says "We're not the Fucking Cure we're just here to drink the riders that they cant get to !!" "We're no better or worse than guys who play in the local string orchestra playing Handel and Bach" Thanks for 10 imaginary years....to all Cureheads everywhere...and to Roger, Robert,Simon, Jason, Lol,Perry,Borris, Porl, Mattiew, Andy,Michael, ETC ETC.......MERRY XMAS !!!!!!"

From Gary Sean Phil Nick Rachael & Phil ( the sounds)

And this just in, The Cureheads invade America in 2001! :

"We've finally done it and we're coming to America... wahoo... the first date is confirmed we're playing in Florida on the 20th April 2001 @ The Student Union Talahasse...Florida .... we have another 5 gigs to confirm on the coast and we'l let you know as they come in. We cant wait to see you all soon.

For those of you in South America we are negotiating a tour of Argentina, Mexico, Brazil & Chile see you soon.

Have a wicked Xmas and we'll see you all soon. Dont forget that if you want our new cd rom, email your snail address and your club ID to us and it'll be with you in no time. You can also get all our live gigs now if you are up and running with Napster.... Dont forget our live video clips on our web site ( which has been branded in the Wish colours ready for our new 2001 Wishing Tour !!! )

We are playing a gig live on web broadcast through our website on Jan 6th 2001 at 7PM UK time...all you have to do to join in with live requests is join our chat room which is in the attic on our webpage and be there ready to sing along...bring a bottle guys.."

  • For those who might not have heard it:
  • "I wanted to explain a little thing I discovered a few weeks ago: this is not a curespotting but something's over there I don't know if anybody knew it before or if it's too clear or if I was the only person that didn't know about it but well...

"at the very end of "Coming Up" Robert says something and it is put on low speed, I hadn't heard clearly what he said but now I discovered: "daisy daisyyyyyy", it is a line from the song that HAL 9000 sings when the last standing man is turning him down at the last scene of "2001: a space odissey" directed by Stanley Kubrick. The song is on the film because HAL 9000 returns to his computer childhood, when the scientists programmed songs on his "chip brain". I was very shocked and gratefully because Kubrick is my favourite filmmaker and it's well known that Robert, Perry and the other members like this film. I think it's a funny "sign from God" that I discovered this story a few weeks before entering next year and I'm sure the Kubrick film will be the first film I will watch on the next millenium.... a happy new year to the Cure and all their fans around the world!!! (let's hope it's a good one without any fear)"

(Thanks to ALe from Orient Ambulance)

  • Cure covers:
  • "Matchbox 20 has done a fantastic version of "Fascination Street" at what I am guessing is a recent concert. It is floating around in mp3 format and very much worth the download. It definitely has their own flare with new guitar effects but it stays very much true to the original. Hats off to Matchbox 20!"

    (Thanks Claiborne)

"I was at the concert of Jay Mascis and the fog (Dinosaur Jr's singer) on the 7th december in Gent (Belgium). They played a very strong and hard(core) version of Just Like heaven (like they cover it on a 45t in 1996). It was like "YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUU, soft and only"... with the big male bassist's voice."

    (Thanks Pops)

"On the local radio station here, X96, they do a program called, X96 exposed. They play new songs from bands that you have heard of, and of bands that you haven't heard of. Anyway, last night, they played AFI's cover, of the Cure's 'Hanging Garden.' It was rather good."

    (Thanks Treeweel)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Another Cure reference in a Melody Maker interview: this time who speaks is Billy Corgan (MM of the 13 Dec: "I really hope to re-invent myself musically)

Q: Do you feel part of Fred Durst's generation? A: " (...) you see when I was a teenager I really responded to things like The Cure, The Beatles. I believe in a message behind the vitriol, beyond the scream and yell..."

    (Thanks Davide)

"Finally, i can submit a cure spotting. i was watching the new fabulous show Gilmour Girls on the WB, and in this one scene, the mother said she had to go because it was the cure- and there in the background (was this girl lying on this bed listening) to Pictures of You. i really couldnt beleive my ears- Someone on that show must luv Robert just as much as i do!!"

    (Thanks Nykol)

"I was flipping through channels when I caught MTV's "say what karaoke" playing a weird heavy metal version of boys don't cry as they came back from commercial."

    (Thanks Charlie)

"Thursday 14th, the Dutch public channel 1 showed a documentery about the punk years. It was called "Wilde Jaren". At the end, they showed about two minutes of The Cure video A forest. The voice over said that in the dark music of the late seventies and early eighties performed by New Wave bands bands like Joy Division, Siouxsie & Banshees and The Cure was called Gothic. "

    (Thanks Mike)

"I actually had a curespotting today (it's about time too!) i've been watching the best of mtv (awards, or whatever they're called). and for backround music for when sarah michelle gellar was nominated for best female performance, they played 'maybe someday'! ok, so maybe it's a re-run and maybe somebody probably mentioned it already but i couldn't help it :) "

    (Thanks ChArLoTtEsDaNcE)

"I'm not sure how well this qualifies for a curespotting but I've been meaning to mention it for a while. For all of you live in Washington, D.C., there is a great sandwich place right below Dupont Circle called the Fascination Street Cafe. Needless to say, I am a frequent customer."

    (Thanks Nate)

  • The Cure place 5 songs on the Triple M countdown:
  • "Recently Australian radio station Triple M released the top 1000 rock songs of all time (which is revised each year) and it was not without the presence of The Cure. In Between Days was at 873, Friday I'm in Love 718, Let's go to Bed 587, Close to Me 505 and Love Cats made the top 500 with a final placing of 137 (a suprising but fantastic effort amongst hard rock)."

    (Thanks Em)

  • Some news about Maus:
  • "my name is biggi, i´ve been a huge cure fan for years and i visit this site every week for cure news from around the globe. i´m also in the icelandic band called maus wich roger played with in ´97, (a dream come true for us), he did some wonderful things on that album and i will be eternally greatful to him... well... i least try and buy the guy beer when he visits reykjavik (note: a pint here is about 6 $ !! ha ha). the album was only released here in iceland (and also sung in icelandic) so i doubt that curefans will ever be able to get a copy, from a record store anyway...we just put up an english web site, and we decided to release two of those 9 maus songs he has played on on the internet, in mp3... (english versions) ... the songs he plays on are called "miss moodbreaker" and "every written word is a lie" ... so just... enjoy ... http://www.maus.is/en "

    (Thanks Biggi)

  • CURIOSITY will be playing again on saturday feb. 3rd in Heidelberg (germany). If you are interested in getting a ride from Liège (luik), send an e-mail to vincent.crepin@swing.be . Contact him soon, because there are only a few places left. And since things are pretty slow right now, I figured I'd post a couple of reviews from the last Curiosity show:
  • curiosity. 9.12.00 le cap vert - vise, belgium

seventeen seconds, fascination street, watching me fall, pictures of you, where the birds always sing, maybe someday, in between days, the last day of summer, shake dog shake, the kiss, sinking, last dance, trust, just like heaven, lullaby, play for today, fight, bloodflowers

encore: all cats are grey, charlotte sometimes, a forest, boys don't cry, 10.15 saturday night, killing an arab

the show started with the dream-tour-intro, then curiosity went onstage and and went into a surprising seventeen seconds, which was followed by a very dream-tour-orientated show including a number of songs from bloodflowers and also from disintegration, upcoming surprises being last dance and a great version of fight. in the encore there were very good versions of all cats are grey and a forest (absolutely stunning), but charlotte sometimes and boys don't cry both played pretty slow (i don't know if that was intended), and they finished it off with the classic cure endings 10.15 saturday night and killing an arab and the audience was very into it.

most of the songs sound almost exactly like they are played by the cure, of course you notice some differences in some of the drum, guitar and keyboard sounds and especially in the voice. it is definitely the hardest part to try to imitate robert's singing, but once you get used to vincent's voice and with a little imagination it fits in perfectly - though due to his shaved head you will never be in danger to mistake him for robert, but i don't think that this would be his intention at all.

after this being my first curiosity show and having seen and listening to recordings from two other coverbands already, i must say that curiosity has been by far the best of them, a must see experience. whatever you need as long as the cure is not playing shows is curiosity. i hope they gonna keep playing concerts over the next couple of years (also in germany), and i'm not gonna miss out on them.

    (Thanks Jan)

"I was there on saturday-night, and I have to say ; it was super !

Great voice, very good musicians, excellent sound, I was impressed. I admit I was a bit sceptic to drive to Visé, but I did and I saw a good concert. It brought back a lot of memories to those 31 real Cure-gigs I saw in 2000.

I'd like to use this opportunity to say hello to all the Cure-people I met in Belgium, Germany, USA, Holland, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, France,... hey, didn't I ran into you too, Craig, in the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas ?"

    (Thanks Pete)

  • More Cure parties:
  • "The party is in Dresden, Germany on 16th december and starts at 9.30 pm. The location is called Nickern castle. There are 4 dancefloors with different music-styles (Eigthies,Gothic,Industrial). The Cure-floor is one of them. A live band called "Seven Inch(ild) " is also involved. For more information please e-mail to silver_factory@hotmail.com. The parties in Nickern castle were always very popular, but this is the last one ever because the castle was sold by the municipality."

    (Thanks Matthias)

"Just to let you know about a Cure Tribute Night that a friend of mine and I our putting on Dec 23rd in El Paso, TX @ Club Dedo."

    (Thanks Matt)

  • Cure covers:
  • "this is certainly the most bizarre cure cover i've ever heard, and it may be that it has been around for some time now, but it has finally made its way to me via mp3. its a cover of Friday I'm in Love by the Dartmouth Cords Acapella group."

    (Thanks Devon)

"I just read the newspage and noticed the addition of the Naimee Colman cover of Love Song, I just wanted to add some additional info... There is a WICKED remix done by Brothers in Rhythm (Dave Seaman and Steve Anderson). I believe this is an exclusive white label, and has been making rounds in the clubs down here in Miami for about a month or so now. "

    (Thanks James)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Ever since I've been visitng your wonderful website, I've waited for my very own Curespotting! I finally experienced my first! I was shopping at Kroger (grocery store, yay!), in this small town outside Nashville. While deciding which Pizza Rolls would be the tastiest, Friday, I'm in Love came on! And guess what? It's Friday! Lol!!! No matter what anyone says, that song just makes ya happy! Ok it does me anyway!

    Happy Holidays to everyone!"

"Ok, this is really strange that after all this time, I've waiting to have a Curespotting and I have two in as many days!

Last night, after Saturday Night Live (the first showing), they show an older/classic SNL. I came in late so I don't remember who the host was (Christine Baranski - craig) but The Cure was the guestband. I'm sure you've all seen this before, as I have. I just thought it was kinda cool that I should have two in one weekend. "

    (Thanks Robin)

"Dave Wakeling (SP) from English Beat was the guest DJ for the Flashback Lunch today 12/7 @ KROQ (Los Angeles) and played 'Fascination Street'. He said that The Cure is arguably the best band of the 80's."

    (Thanks Bryon)

"There is a Cure reference on an interview to Brian Molko of Placebo (I'M THE ANTI -EMINEM! Melody Maker - Oct 20th 2000]. That goes like this:

Q:COULD YOU BE LIKE ROBERT SMITH, STILL KNOCKING OUT GOTH POP IN YOUR 40S?

A:I don't know. I hope we'd be more like Bowie, more like several processes of reinvention along the way. Keep a healthy desire for change in our music and a healthy contempt for formula. And to not self-censor yourself, in the way you say, "This is not a Placebo sound." We don't really have that kind of attitude. We're very open. If it comes out of us, then it's Placebo."

    (Thanks Davide)

"I work in a customer service department where all of my 3 coworkers are conservative republicans. They turn on Rush Limbaugh's radio show in the afternoon, and then Michael Medved afterwards. Well, Regardless of your political affiliations, the man has great taste in music. Today, he used Friday I'm In Love for segue music. I was happy to get a little of my music in with the political chatter."

"Apperantly Michael Medved the conservative talk show host likes The Cure a lot. Two days in a row he has used The Cure for intro music. Yesterday was Friday I'm In Love and today was Why Cant I Be You."

    (Thanks Cambria)

"There is a political program here in Peru called "the N hour", you can hear the 60 first seconds of fascination street when the program starts and 15 in every commercial pause. Ironically is the same program which in a way provoked the dictatorship fall (for those who doesn't know, Peru has just become a democratic country)."

    (Thanks Felix)

"Today there was an portrait of holland football team Feyenoord Rotterdam on German Sports TV (DSF). in the background they used End, Open and From the edge of the deep green sea as background music. it makes the portrait much more interesting."

    (Thanks Stefan)

"In the latest issue of Yahoo! magazine, there is a section about xmas gifts and under the heading of "for goths" there is a photo of the cure circa 1992 wish-era and mention of a website, middlepillar.com that specializes in goth/industrial/ethereal/etc. products."

    (Thanks Courtney)

  • More Cure covers:
  • "Irish songstress Naimee Coleman does a cover of Lovesong on her latest album. I think it's actually a single too. It's not very good unfortunately. Another Irish release with a cure cover is an album by a guy called Luka Bloom. He does a busker like cover of Inbetween days."

    (Thanks Keith)

  • A new Cure tribute album:
  • "Just wanted to let you guys know, if you didn't already, that there's a new Cure tribute out there called Disintegrated which has covers of all of the songs from Disintegration except “Lovesong” (or rather, I should say atrocities passed off as cover versions of songs from Disintegration by eleven different hardcore/death metal/whatever you want to call them bands). If you want it just for the laugh factor, then I'd suggest you pick it up. It's really quite funny. Especially the really fast hardcore version of "Pictures of You". But it’s not supposed to be a comedy album. But then, hey, some of you could actually like this CD. Hell, some people like Limp Bizkit. In fact, I think the only thing that could possibly make this album an ever bigger piece of shit would be Limp Bizkit doing “Lovesong”. Hey, they did do George Michael's "Faith", so why not? Or maybe even Kid Rock. Oh the possibilities..."

    (Thanks Woland)

  • An update from the Cureheads:
  • "Well Ireland seems like a distant Guiness filled Haze already. Memories of really nice people just as drunk as we were helping us push the tour bus up Temple bar hill at 3 in the morning, because we'd left a Steve Cougan Video playing all night. Wearing woolly hats and gloves at the soundcheck in Cork because The Annex had no heating during the day. Falling over 3 times onstage in Dublin because the Guiness was SOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD ! We had a great time in Ireland so great in fact that we're coming back in January... Thanks to everyone that battled against the weather and a Nationwide Taxi strike to come out and support us while we were there. The response was genuinely heart warming.....

As a xmas present to ANY Cure fans who join our Chat Room between now and January we're giving away a FREE CD ROM (Real Player) Video of the Highlights of The Dublin Gig. It's 40 minutes long and is of very high quality... On Fri, Dec 29th will be here The Cure Tribute Concert by The Ordinary - The Cure Tribute Band. I saw The Ordinary tribute gig at The Cure afterparty in Apr 12th and it was so great! It appeared as though it plays genuine The Cure... I heard The Ordinary are able to play about 35 The Cure songs and they met The Cure in 1996 in Prague and then formed The Cure Tribute Band..."

"A new book called "1000 Record Covers" sold at Restoration Hardware in Canada (don't know if it exists in US or elsewhere) has an obscure and rather strange choice of a Cure record cover... Happily Ever After!?! I don't think the band had anything to do with that design, but at least the Cure are represented. If you want the book, you can order it from www.restorationhardware.com."

    (Thanks Greg)

"I'm not too proud to admit this... but I was watching a soap opera on NBC today called Passions (hey! I'm sick and have nothing better to do :) and they played There Is No If... - they played almost the entire song! Wow..."
