  • Here's some more info on the new Cure tribute cd that is being put together by Re-Run Records:
  • "So far Re-Run Records has a few bands of its own that will be participating. LINUS has confirmed they're doing "The Exploding boy". HOVER has expressed interest in contributing but have not decided on anything. They are right now working in the studio on their follow up release to their first self titled album. (Check Them Out On MP3.Com./Hover). Their drummer who does his own solo recording has told me he would do his own version of "Ariel", and I will definitely get a contribution from the electronic recording artists Eukariotic maybe "Dressing Up". We are looking for diversity to make a great tribute.

What we would like you to do is to put up this email address tjm237@psu.edu and tell the bands to email this address with their name and their cover and contact and we will get back to them with re-runs records submission address. This way we can filter out the songs we don't need. (that address is checked daily)"

    (Thanks Chris)

  • If you have a Thingviewer you can now download a Robert Smith thing.
  • (Thanks Shaun)

  • Fans in the Chicago area will be able to hear The Cure on a regular basis starting tonight:
  • "every monday, starting tonight from 10pm till 2am in chicago, i will be hosting the 80's show. the show will be heavily cure influenced. other bands i'd like to play are joy division, DM and bands of that sort. i dont want the 80's label attatched because 70's and 90's music, even music from the 60's will be played. point of this email is to help promote the show and to let people know that in 3 to 4 weeks, the cure will be featured non-stop for 4 hours. the radio station is wluw 88.7 fm. it is a college radio station that specializes in indie-rock. the signals are pretty weak but for the most part, most of chicago can get the station."

    (Thanks Kamar)

  • First he answered a trivia question about it on the Craig Kilborne show, and now the video is played on the first 120 Minutes that he hosts:
  • "i was watching 120 minutes on MTV last nite (sunday), and around the second hour of the program they played the video for 'friday im in love'. wierd, huh? also, this 120 minutes is the first one hosted by David Holmes, who is going to be hosting for the foreseeable future. Do you think he played this inparticular video as a result of his appearance on the Craig Kilborne Show?

    (Thanks sëkrëtbô¡)

  • Cure influencing Machine Head? :
  • "Some weeks ago, I read an interview with Machine head (or whatever they're called) about their new album "The burning red" (haven't heard it myself). They said that it was mainly inspired by The Cure's "Disintegration". "

    (Thanks Ruben)

  • A couple of South Park notes. First up, more info on SP in Germany:
  • "hi folks - esp. you German South Park fans out there,

in the new issue of the German "Visions" mag, there's a rather interesting 12 (actually just 11) -page special on South Park, plus a CD with (among other stuff) the SP intro by Primus, "Mentally Dull (Think Tank Remix)" by Vitro and the Spirit of Christmas episode. You can also directly order the videos of eps. 1-6 from them - in German (well... i won't go into discussing that here now ;) and - if you buy the collector's box for 90 DM - you'll get all the original English versions of eps. 1-6 (incl. the Fireside Chats with Matt & Trey) as an extra! So, needless to say what i bought ;)

CC: On page 39, Trey Parker is stating the obvious: "Yet, sometimes, they [Matt & Trey] are really fond of their guest stars, and their guest appearances become hommages, as in the case of Monthy Python's Eric Idle or Cure boss Robert Smith, who both rank among Trey's teenage heroes: 'Robert Smith was great. He called and said he liked our show very much, especially those two British [?] gentlemen, who kept farting at each other...'"

Visions is also organising nationwide South Park parties (with orig. episode screenings, presentations of the 2 CDs plus merchandise) in Germany:

    3.9 Bielefeld, Hechelei

    4.9. Hamburg, Markthalle

    5.9. Dortmund, Soundgarden

    6.9. Frankfurt, Batschkapp

    7.9. Köln, Live Music Hall

    9.9. Berlin, Columbia Fritz

    10.9. Bremen, Modernes

    11.9. München, Colosseum

    12.9. Nürnberg, Forum

    13.9. Stuttgart, Röhre

ps: no, i don't work or get paid for this by Visions ;)

remember kids: make SP a hit over here! - or otherwise RTL might drop the series again before ep. 112 and our chance to witness Guildo Horn giving his voice to our dear Robert ;) "

    (Thanks Nikate)

And South Park will begin airing in Finland on channel MTV3 on Oct. 7th

    (Thanks Pekka)

Phew! We've finally got around to starting on the Cure's ultra impressive back catalogue at last so apologies to those of you who have been plaguing us for Cure releases over the last year. We're kicking off with "Pornography" due to popular demand. Following the early popularity of previous albums, "Three Imaginary Boys" (No.44 UK, '79), "Seventeen Seconds" (No.20 UK, '80) and "Faith" (No.14 UK, '81), "Pornography" finally hit the UK Top 10 in May ''82, gave the band their biggest hit to date and kick-started their international career with a wallop. "Pornography" contains the Cure's usual brand of high-octane indie rock with strident guitars and Robert Smith's impassioned vocals wailing over the top. Contains "One Hundred Years", the mini-hit "The Hanging Garden" (No.34 UK, '82) and a host of other modern rock slabs of dynamite! Start your Cure vinyl collection now 'cos they'll be more to follow shortly so keep posted. Essential for lovers of spiky mop-top and bright red lipstick!

  • Comedy Central is currently letting South Park fans vote on which episode will be shown each wednesday. So if you want to see Mecha Streisand (with Robert) again, vote now.
  • (Thanks Roger)

  • And South Park (dubbed in German) will begin airing on German tv channel RTL on Sept. 5th at 23.15. The first episode will be "Cartman bekommt eine Analsonde". So it should be 11 weeks until Mecha Streisand is shown (since it is the 12th episode of the series).

  • Last night on the Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn they had an MTV vj named Dave Holmes as a guest. They gave him a quiz where they would name a song from the 80's and the vj would have to guess the band. The 14th song was "Friday I'm in Love" and the vj got it right. My question is when did 1992 become part of the 80's?
  • (Thanks JoeyLom)

  • And a follow-up to the story about the Australian hair ads, there is at least one other ad that has The Kinks - The Cure. Hey, where are Split Enz?

  • Two nights ago (8/24/99) Robert was mentioned on a VH-1 "Where Are They Now?" that included a piece on Siouxsie and the Banshees. They showed a picture of Robert with Siouxsie and Steve Severin after mentioning that he "stepped in" to help after Kenny Morris and John Mckay left.

  • The Cure are mentioned in singer Tal Bachman's bio on his website. Here's what he says:
  • "When I was eighteen I stopped listening to music," Bachman states flatly. "I was a huge U2 fan, but The Joshua Tree unnerved me, and Rattle and Hum terrified me - my favorite band was cracking up! The Smiths had long since broken up, The Cure had become redundant, Queen had been comatose for years, hair bands sucked, and I just freaked out." He spent two years abroad, and then, somewhat peculiarly, enrolled in a small university in Utah, where he wound up studying political philosophy.

  • Looks like there may be a vinyl reissue of Pornography on Sept. 3rd :
  • "While looking through the back pages of this week's NME I saw an advert by a shop which sells Cds, LPs, etc. by mail order. On the list, the following appears: The Cure - Pornography, release 3rd September, 180gm LP reissue in PVC sleeve, also includes lyric insert. Price £15.99. Their website is at http://www.keymailorder.com"

  • ICE Magazine has removed Bloodflowers from their upcoming release list.

  • A mention of The Cure from Billboard (8/28/99):
  • LONG DORMANT, Philippine rock may be awakened from its slumber by two album releases from BMG Records Philippines. "Paper View," by all-female trio Fatal Posporos, was released on July 6. The act has been compared to Japanese female rock band Shonen Knife and is also influenced by such international acts as Juliana Hatfield, Lisa Loeb, and the Ramones. "Grip Stand Throw" by Sandwich, released on Aug. 6, is a rock/hard-rock band influenced by such acts as the Cure, the Cardigans, and Led Zeppelin. Says BMG marketing executive Reev Robledo, "There was a strong rock scene here in the mid-'90s, but labels aren't signing as many rock bands as before. We think the time is right to bring back a rock movement, and we believe there is a market and audience for it." DAVID GONZALES

  • Here's a great ad that has been appearing in Australia:
  • "I saw a bus yesterday with 2 Schwarzkopf advertisements on it... there were two pictures of a girl side by side, the first had "Simply red?" and she had damaged hair, and the second had nice hair and the hair care product and the words "The Cure". The other ad said "Dire Straits?" and "The Cure". "

    (Thanks Breathe)

  • Another Cure tribute album is in the works, here's the details:
  • "Re-Run Records is currently working on a tribute to the CURE , Its planned release will be in February. Along with our own acts We would like to have other bands send us their Cure covers. Keep in mind we are looking for certain songs, We already have bands doing or possibly doing Ariel, The Exploding Boy, 17 Seconds, Dressing Up. We are trying to make a tribute for the more dedicated Cure fans.

This tribute will cost nothing for the bands to be on. It will be paid for by the label. "

    (Thanks Chris)

  • Here's some info on the German quiz show Risiko which featured A Cure quiz on July 1st:
  • "I finally got the questions that were asked about The Cure in the german quizshow "Risiko" on july 1st. I haven´t seen the show myself, I got the questions from the TV-channel which broadcasts this show. Normally they ask a maximum of 10 questions for each topic, but they sent me 15 questions, so I don´t know which questions they really asked in the show. Here they are:

    1. In which town was Robert born on april 21st 1959? (Blackpool)

    2. In which other group played Robert guitar until may 1984? (Siouxsie & the Banhees)

    6. In july 1982 the former drummer Lol Tolhurst changed his instrument. Which instrument played Lol since then? (Keyboards)

    7. Which DJ did the Closer Mix of "Close To Me"? (Paul Oakenfold)

    8. The contract with the record company Ariola-Hansa has been cancelled after they refused to release a certain single. What´s the title of this single? (Killing an arab)

    9. What was the reason for the Elektrasampler on which the Cure covered "Hello, I love you? (The 40th anniversary of Elektra)

    10. In 1989 the song "Miss you much" from Janet Jackson prevented that a Cure-single reached the number1 position in the US-charts. Which single reached the number 2 position in 1989? (Lovesong)

    11. In 1983 Robert forgot the lyrics to "Lovecats" while perfoming the song in a TV-show. In which TV-show? (Top of the Pops)

    12. In november 1978 The Cure were on tour with Generation X. Why were they fired in december? (Lol Tolhurst had pissed on Billy Idols leg)

    15. After a concert in Strasbourg on may 27th 1982 Robert had a fight with another member of the band after which the other member left the band. What´s the name of this other member? (Simon Gallup)"

    (Thanks Martin)

  • A follow-up to the "Robert's Boot" story in Jane magazine:
  • "That boot in the picture from Jane Magazine could not have belonged to anyone from the Late 70's. Dr. Martens did not use that method of stitching the uppers to the soles using a rubber strip until the early 1990's. Before that, the uppers were stitched directly into the soles, and the yellow seam was flat on the sole, not in that rubber stuff."

    (Thanks Matt)

  • For those interested in Astronomy, here's an interesting project called Team Jupiter Crash:
  • "the SETI@Home project is quite interesting, a world-wide experiment in scanning the universe for radio signals that could come from exterrestrial intelligence trying to communicate with other civilizations... if you've seen the movie "Contact" with Jodie Foster, this is that SETI, spread out and about among whomever wants to participate instead to help increase the odds of finding e.t.i. ....

There are literally hundreds of thousands of participants in this two-year experiment, including teams from numerous companies (large and small), schools (from elementary to private to large universities), clubs and organizations of all kinds, countries, and individuals.

Since members of the Cure (and many of their fans) are interested in astronomy, I thought it would be fun to set up a team just for us fans, so those of us who are interested can have our own spot to join in this mission... it's really simple to do, it's relatively entertaining, and it gives us something else to do while waiting for the new album to arrive!

Anyhow, the link to the page I have set up to direct interested persons to the project and our team is: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Theater/8444/jupitercrash.html

    (Thanks Jewel)

  • And a couple of more "Cure hearings" :
  • "I know of two more places that the Cure is played:

1st is "K-mart" (lovesong, a letter to elise, firday i'm in love)

2nd is "Rue21" clothing store (friday i'm in love, hot hot hot!!, hello i love you)"

    (Thanks Char)

    Aug. 3rd

  • A couple of Cure articles in new magazines :

  • Jane magazine (Sept. 99)

These Boots are Made for Talkin'

"We are the boots of Robert Smith. He was born in 1959, the same year Doc Martens went global, Barbie made her debut and pant hose were invented. (Those last 2 products we would love to squash under our soles.) Anyway, Robert wore us in 1976, when he formed the Cure. When the Messiah of Melancholy hit it big with "Killing an Arab," we were his boots of choice. We didn't mind sharing the spotlight with the white makeup, either. At times, it would get smeared on his hands and end up on our laces- still, we got along fine. Robert is a frustrated soul, but he has never used us to kick anyone in the ass or stomp on people smaller than he. He simply stares at us with love, the same way our 20 eyes stared back at him. Now that we think of it, he is one of the original shoe-gazing rock stars. There was a time when he started wearing some crazy basketball sneakers with the tongues hanging out, and our soles ached. But he has come back to us from time to time. And this fall, hopefully he'll wear us again when he and his bandmates release the dark new record Bloodflowers. While waiting in the closet for Robert to get us, put us on and take us for a spin, we realize that maybe boys don't cry, but boots do- when they're left on the rack too long."

also, there's a picture of a black doc marten (pretty worn) and the caption says:

"The actual boot of Robert Smith from the late '70s, still intact after 23 years of wear and tear."

    (Thanks Gina)

    Alternative Press (Sept. 99)

    "UNHAPPY BIRTHDAY

Cure turn 20; new album goes headlong into darkness

"The Cure will mark their 20th anniversary by realeasing what insiders are saying is their darkest album yet. the album, reportedly titled "blood flowers", is being described as the third part of a triptych that stylistically fall in line with such classic Cure albums as Pornography and Disintergration. it features band founder Robert Smith's ruminations on aging, death and endings. the current Cure lineup- Smith, Simon Gallup, Perry Bamonte, Roger O'Donnell and Jason Cooper- also recorded and toured behind 1996's Wild Mood Swings. the album is slated for late-september release; sources close to the band say that a tour seemed likely in the new year."

    (Thanks Char)

  • And more Cure "hearings" in odd places:
  • "The Cure's 'Why Can't I Be You' was playing in the que line for the new 'Rock and Roller Coaster' @ Disney-MGM Studios in Florida, featuring 'Aerosmith' who supplies the music for the on-board ride sound system and also the pre-show area."

"I am a waiter at the Palace Of Auburn Hills in Detroit, Michigan; this is where the Cure plays everytime they stop by, and also where the legendary "Show" video was filmed. Anyways, in The Palace Grille, they play Friday I'm In Love on their tape. In the Palace Club, they play Wrong Number. Not the most pleasing songs to everyone i'm sure, but still The Cure. Ironically, the tapes which have these two songs on them are entitled "Fresh Hits"."

    (Thanks Bryon & James)

  • Here's a rather bizarre Cure refrence:
  • "An italian rap band called ARTICOLO 31 has cited the Cure in a song called "Così Cosà". The reference has been explicitly made about the "Close to me" video: the singer of ARTICOLO 31 says that the wardrobe of that video would be a nice place to make sex!"

    (Thanks Davide)
