August 27th

  • Well, here we go again. COF will be shutting down tonight due to the imminent threat of Hurricane Katrina (and the Waves?). I've seen a lot of these "killer" storms aim right at us, then turn at the last moment. This one, I've got a very bad feeling about. This actually looks like "the big one" we've been fearing for years. Any spare positive thoughts, voodoo spells, prayers, whatever you've got, sure could be used in the New Orleans/Southeast Louisiana area right now. The decision whether to stay or go still hasn't been made, but either way, it could be a long time before we are up and running again. Best of luck to everyone else in this monster's path. Stay safe!

  • Update: I am safe and near Houston, Tx., but New Orleans (and much of the central Gulf Coast) is devastated and things are only getting worse. Please help in anyway you can! Links for local coverage NOLA, WWL, WDSU.

LOS ANGELES - Since the textured aggression of the Deftones' 1995 debut,  the Northern California quintet has become an icon approved by mosh
pits and critics alike for its exquisitely sculpted sonic roar. While the Deftones record the follow-up to their self-titled 2003 album, Maverick Records
releases B-SIDES & RARITIES. Filled with import-only B-sides, intriguing covers, unreleased mixes, and other choice rarities, the CD/DVD
package is available October 4 at all physical and digital retail outlets for a suggested retail price of $24.98.

Compiled by the Deftones, this 14-song collection of remastered obscurities illuminates a hidden history behind the Deftones with more than an hour
of unreleased music from bassist Chi Cheng; guitarist Stephen Carpenter; vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno; drummer Abe Cunningham; and

years, including Cocteau Twins' "Wax And Wane," Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man," a punishing version of Helmet's "Sinatra," a strangely
haunting interpretation of Sade's "No Ordinary Love," Duran Duran's "The Chauffeur," The Smiths' "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I
Want," and The Cure's "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep."

    Away)," and "Digital Bath."

Words" and "Bored" from Adrenaline; "My Own Summer" and "Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)" from Around The Fur; "Change (In the House of
Flies)," "Back To School (Mini Maggit)," and "Digital Bath" from White Pony; and "Minerva," "Bloody Cape," and "Hexagram" from Deftones.

  • Porl WILL be staying for the recording of the new album, for which 20 songs have already been written:

  • "Ciao! The concert was great, but my evening was on friday, when i met them at rome airport and i flew with them to catania!
i spoke to porl (the nicest person in the band..) who told me he's staying for the new album, and to simon (he was very talkative):i asked him about perry (he is sad for perry-"a very nice person"),and he also told about the new album (robert and him have already written 20 new songs)...i told him about my fender jazz bass and he asked me the colour, saying it is a very good bass...
on the plane robert had been all the time reading his newspaper, jason chatting with his wife, porl with robert's bodyguard and simon joking with the cabin crew!

Photos from Carlo's meeting have been posted at the Photo Gallery.

  • Terrible news today, as word comes from NME and AP that the legendary Dr. Robert Moog has lost his battle with cancer, and has passed away at the age of 71. My condolences to his family and friends.

  • If you want to know more about the life of Dr. Moog and
the enormous contributions he made to the world of music, please check out the excellent Moog documentary on dvd.

    (Thanks David and Andrew)

  • ARTE has a clip from the St. Malo soundcheck of The Cure (minus Jason) doing 'At Night'. You can also get an MP3 of it at Goth City.

    Infotext:

    Dear The Cure fans!
As you all know The Cure will be playing their only concert in  Germany at the Berlin-Wuhlheide the 28.8.2005.
We think that is a reason to celebrate. There will therefore be an after show party in „Fritzclub im Postbahnhof“ at the Ostbahnhof at  11pm. The DJs Wilco & Ørlög , wellknown from the legendary „A Strange  Night“ parties in Berlin, will be rocking you through the night.

And the best part: You can go with the S-Bahn (line three, six  stations) directly from the concert location to Ostbahnhof. There you  will practically stumble across the Postbahnhof. Walk out of the main  hall (in the direction of McDonalds) and links, cross the street and  you are already there.

The big official Cure fan meet-up after The Cure’s performance in  Berlin.
Music: Nothing but The Cure with the DJs Wilco and Ørlög.

Further information about the official The Cure after show party in  the Fritzclub in Postbahnhof can be found on:

Don’t miss it – be there...!

  • Curespotting:

  • "Today on a TV game called "un contre tous" ( "one VS all" ) on French channel France 3, one of the question was : Who is the leader of The
Cure ? a. Simon Gallup, b. Matthieu Hartley, c. Robert Smith. The player answered Matthieu Hartley :o) and in the audience, 51 people out of 60 gave the good answer."

    (Thanks Sylvain)

"I was watching a show called 'Cold Case' on CBS, and they just played half of 'Just Like Heaven' as a girl and her mother walked down the road talking to each other. They also played Pictures of You."

    (Thanks Asa)

"just a quick word to let you know about a strange experience i've just had...

i was shopping in a health food store here in tokyo....around closing time...9pm...when something started to bug me...i couldnt quite understand what it
was at the beginning, thinking that it could be just the fact that i couldnt find my fav sweets....THEN i got it:the music. I started to pay closer attention...the words...i knew the words....but not the song!!! i finally recognised "Eyes without a face" by Billy Idol, except that it was obviously not him !! then....i almost dropped my shopping basket on my getas .... cagey tigers....the way you move....the way you... YES !!! it was the cure! but still in the same crooner style. so i went up to the counter and ask...I got the CD waved at me as an answer....by now you must have guessed...Paul Anka did it.  So much for a cure spotting. but in japan, they are quite rare....It still made my evening! "

  • Couleur 3 will be broadcasting the second half of the Avenches show today at 8pm.

  • (Thanks Dennis and KG)

  • Robert in Total Guitar:

  • "Robert is featured a a guitar hero in the HERO WORSHIP column of this month's Total Guitar. I'm sorry I don't have time to transcribe or scan,
but generally I'm not sure about the accuracy of the information, and the accompanying picture is from the day when Robert used to wear the red CCCP shirt."

    (Thanks James)

  • Curespotting:

  • "I was watching the Carson Daly show on NBC Fri. 8-12 and noticed the bit from the comedian, Eugene Mirman. Basically he is equating Cure fans with Vampires in New Orleans. Cure Fans = Vampires. How Funny. Here is the video clip I made of the segment on my web site:

  • An update on today's show in Switzerland - there's a webcam aimed at the stage, but I doubt you'll really see much. And as mentioned yesterday, Couleur 3 will be broadcasting from the festival, but are due to end it at midnight just as The Cure take the stage. But it looks like they will be broadcasting some or all of the show tomorrow night at 8pm their time.

  • (Thanks Anne and Romuald)

  • Perry Bamonte is pure class. As posted at PerryBamonte.de :

  • "Since I left the band and Robert got Porl back I've heard that some people are saying bad things about Porl. I would like it to be known that I have the greatest respect for Porl, I have been friends with him since we met over 20 years ago, and we remained in contact after he left the Cure, I'm friends with his wife and his children -whom I love dearly, and I think he is one of Englands most talented guitarists. If Robert needs another person in the group then Porl is the obvious choice. I still don't know Robert's reason for putting me out of the band but that is his decision and I respect that. If I have no resentment against Porl, then I really don't see how anyone else should! He's a brilliant musician and also a lovely man whom I'm happy to count as one of my friends. It was Porl's wife who taught me (with great patience!) the rudiments of the keyboard, and it was Porl who suggested me as a replacement for Roger when he left the band, - you could say I owe him a lot! So please, dear Cure fans - have some respect for this lovely man.

    Thank you, Perry "

    (Thanks Jose)

  • Free ticket for Rock oz'Arenes:

  • "If you're in the London area and need single ticket for the August 18th Avenches show, you can have mine for free.  Contact Tracy."

    (Thanks Tracy)

  • Rock oz'Arenes broadcast info:

  • "Suisse/French radiostation Couleur 3 will broadcast live from Arenes 18.th to 20th August. each day 8-12pm. If there is cure stuff broadcasted, will possibly be on the 19th, as they will just be going on stage at 12pm."

    (Thanks Dennis)

  • SS/Faith/Pornography re-releases without the bonus disc:

  • "Just noticed on the UK Amazon site that 17 Seconds / Faith / Pornography are to be re-released in their original single CD album form on 5th September... presumably remastered, just without the bonus disc."

    (Thanks Graham)

  • From Amnesty International and NME:

  • Belarus: Jailed scientist is freed after Amnesty campaign supported by The Cure

Eminent Belarusian academic Professor Yury Bandazhevsky, was conditionally released from prison on 5 August, after serving four years of an eight year sentence.

Yury Bandazhevsky’s case had been taken up by Amnesty International and other human rights organisations as well as by English band The Cure and Russian rock band, Leningrad.

Robert Smith, lead singer of The Cure, said:

"The release of Professor Yury Bandazhevsky is welcome news, and another great example of how we can all make a difference if we try - well done Amnesty: the fight goes on."

Seriously, when did Bono join The Cure?

  • And Also The Trees to play a show in Paris:

  • "A quick note to let you know that "And Also The Trees" - famously one of Roberts favourite bands over the years - are playing a 'special' one-off
show in Paris on November 18th at the Batofar. 'Special' because it is to celebrate the 25th anniversary of AATT & the release of a 'Best Of'
CD entitled "And Also The Trees: 1980-2005".

For those un-initiated, AATT supported The Cure many times (including the UK leg of The Top tour in 84). Lol also produced their first 2 singles & debut album & Robert remixed their US single 'The Pear Tree' in 91.

This is a small venue & tickets are expected to sell-out VERY quickly. For more details go to: www.andalsothetrees.co.uk "

    (Thanks Vince)

  • Curespotting:

  • "Mint car is featured in the soundtrack of the film A Lot Like Love. That's a nice film for smile a bit...and the actress is Amanda Peet (which I
    like a lot. ; ) "

    (Thanks David)

"Saw Gregg Araki’s Mysterious Skin (2004) the other day. If no one’s noticed, besides having all sorts of good music like Cocteau Twins, Slowdive and Ride, and being scored by Robin Guthrie, there is a large poster of Siouxsie and Robert together in the character Brian’s room. It’s the classic one with Robert putting his hand to his mouth and Siouxsie reaching round the side of his head."

    (Thanks Andrew D.)

"I was watching last night (Monday) a MuchMoreMusic series called "Evolution" and the theme was "Evolution of punk: From Ramones to Green Day". The Cure was mentioned along with The Smiths and Depeche Mode as bands of the post-punk era...."

    (Thanks Pamela)

    From The Daily Telegraph

"Looking like a cross between Struwwelpeter, the Cure's Robert Smith and Hollywood's idea of Mozart, Tim Minchin has come over from Australia to raise the roof at the Fringe. On piano, he has the fast-fingered grace of a prodigy. His lyrics are so sharp, they'd turn Sondheim green with envy. And what's more, he's very, very funny. He's the find of the fest."

    From The Independent

Jacob recalls: "Steve used to come in every Saturday morning to do his show with a bottle of Lucozade and a packet of crisps and do his best not to wake me as my bedroom was next door to the studio. We even had The Cure in at one stage and I remember Robert Smith telling me that my house reminded him of his granny's house."

    From The Guardian

"And then, of course," Mr McManus adds, "there are the girls. Guitar shops are not just a lot of long-haired lads playing Stairway to Heaven - there is a revolution of girl bands out there, and girls in guitar shops. And, of course, Daisy Rock guitars. The guitar hasn't changed shape much for years, and along comes something brand new and shocking in its appeal. Jimmy Page bought his daughter one, and Robert Smith of the Cure bought one for himself."

    (Thanks Tempest)

    August 14th

  • 50 songs rehearsed for the tour:

  • "a friend of mine met Robert at the hotel in Brussels the other night.  They have rehearsed 50 songs for the tour (and played 32 so far, I think) and if any show should be special RS expects those to be Taormina, Berlin and Athens as the band will take the stage much earlier."

    (Thanks Anonymous)

  • New tribute album out in France:

  • "can't remember if it's been said before, but an album titled 'Lovesong - a piano tribute album to the cure' is out in france (Fnac stores)."

    (Thanks Fabien G.)

  • Curespotting:

  • "Today fm in Ireland have just played an hour of the cure going through their history .....every week they do famous artists like bowie and

    (Thanks curehead in Ireland)

"In the July issue of ELLE magazine (french edition), there is a small pic of robert to advertise the St Malo festival.

Also, this morning (wednesday) on French tv La Cinquième, they had a replay of one of last season's program Question Maison, during which, in the 'SOS maison' segment they used close to me (LP intro and 1st verse) as background music. (note:  check curespottings from friday 29 July, when they used 'jumping someone else's train')."

    (Thanks Fabien G.)

"saw this in a review for louis xiv's ep illegal tender: "Louis XIV’s vocals emulate those of the Clash, and musically evoke sounds of early Smiths and The Cure, especially on the piano-based song 'Marc.'" http://www.star.niu.edu/articles/?id=7894."

  • The Cure are live on France Inter (direct link) and have opened with, you'll never believe it, Plainsong. And now Open, Fascination St., alt.end, The Blood, Shake Dog Shake. Looks like that's all we get.

  • (Thanks to Andy the Cure fan for the direct link)

  • Apparently, France Inter radio will be broadcasting the entire Route du Rock show:

  • "As stated on the french TV ARTE (www.arte.fr) website, the show will be entirely broadcasted on the france inter radio :

    Sur France Inter
France Inter retransmettra le concert des Cure dans son intégralité samedi soir à partir de 22h00.
L'audioblog de Bernard Lenoir en direct de Saint Malo

    Les fréquences
En direct de Saint Malo samedi et dimanche de 22h00 à 00h00"

    (Thanks Fred.)

  • Now for some very bad news. Bruno has been contacted by the SCPP (French equivalent of the RIAA) and will have to remove all of the files from the ftp server. So if you want the Benicassim files or the stuff from Launch, get them NOW. It will all be gone tomorrow. Still a lot to figure out, but this might be the end of the audio/video page, especially if this was the result of a complaint from The Cure, Geffen or Universal.

  • The Guardian has a scathing (and pretty damn funny) review of the new Dave Thompson Cure book:

  • The Guide:

    August 13, 2005
Preview books: In Between Days: An Armchair Guide To The Cure DAVE THOMPSON
    By Ian Gittins
The latest in a series that has already featured Nick Cave, the Fall and Suede, this attempt to chronicle every record, TV and radio session and
pre-release listening tape ever recorded by the Cure is a truly dismal venture. A spasmodically beguiling and innovative band, Crawley's hairiest deserve better than having their leftovers half-heartedly picked over by a pedestrian rock hack. Faced with a band with a moderately diverting history, Thompson lazily glosses over the Cure's many acrimonious sackings and Robert Smith's legendary control freak tendencies in favour of divulging that A Forest, at demo stage, went by the name Into The Trees. It's horrid, life-sapping stuff, and by the time the utterly irony-free Mr Thompson cranks out the dread phrase "dark cathedrals of sound", you are longing to cram him into a wardrobe and push him over a cliff.

    (Thanks Lenore)

  • There was some talk in the Lokeren reviews about the show being filmed for a possible dvd release, and here's a bit more:

  • "I'm working at Lokeren festival and have talked to the filmcrew who taped the cure show. They told me that it will be released as a dvd (propability of 99%) next year, distributed by Universal."

    (Thanks Thomas)

  •  Kathimerini has an article about the Cure show in Greece, and The Star has an article about the Benicassim festival.

  •  Here's another one for the "What's that sticker on Robert's guitar?" file:

  • "Hi, thought you might like to know that last night, Robert had a sticker on his guitar saying Free the West Memphis Three - it relates to this:
http://www.wm3.org/ - looks like he's trying to drum up support so thought you might like to post it on COF and give it some publicity."

I think the other one says "Citizens, Not Subjects".

    (Thanks L)

  •  Curespotting:

  • "2 cure spottings in the august issue of spin.

first, there's a chris martin mope meter.  john mayer is the lowest, thome yorke is next, then our boy robert, with morrissey tops.

second, here's an exert from an interview with billy corgan talking about the future embrace.

spin: "it reminded me a little of the cure's disintegration, and not just because robert smith is on it."

billy: "everybody is kind of focused on the '80s vibe, but they're missing the other vibes."

spin: "i meant the cure, as in, it's very pretty and dreamy.  it doesn't sound like the vapors or kim wilde."

billy: "right.  do you know the concept of simulacrum?  it's a copy of something for which there is no original.  the classic example is the '50s diner...you get these simulacra, where people will be like, oh, it sounds like the '80s, because it has a warbly guitar solo that sounds like the cure."

    (Thanks Brian)

  • Here's a video clip from the Benicassim press conference with RS. Sounds to me like he was just joking about the birthday release of the new album and that the work with Severin wouldn't be Cure related.

  • (Thanks Olivier)

  • The Benicassim website has a report on the press conference & show. Anybody care to do an english translation? Also, Olivier has posted some photos from the show on his website.

  • Update:
    Here's the english traslation:

The Cure: It’s a Different Thing
    By: Pablo Vinuesa

Our brave Iñigo de Amescua was the first one to dare: Do you see your music as a mix of beauty and wrath?  He asked to Robert Smith in the crowed room. “Well, although it’s a nice definition, I would add frustration or dementia, for example”. “It’s God! My parents could die right now and it wouldn’t matter to me”, a well-known fan assured between whispers. Love is what he’s got.

And it’s this Englishman [Robert Smith]  -as the Nacho Vidal  of the musical Romanticism,  that raises passions not only among the public, but also among artists and veteran writers (I am not the only one who doesn’t dare to look directly at his eyes; listen up: our boy is more an icon than a musician).

In addition, as usual, he is always coherent and accessible during his public appearances; the press conference of yesterday was very interesting. After the hopeful The Cure (2004), the departures of Perry Bamonte and Roger O’Donnell left a lonely Smith with Simon Gallup’s everlasting bass and Jason Cooper’s drums, and quite anxious fans.

All of a sudden, the sorrow was forgotten with the return of Porl Thompson, the best guitarist in the band’s history, who has injected new life in to the Crawley guys: “We aren’t  going to add anybody else, because we are very pleased [with the present line-up]. This will be the first concert that we do this way, because at Live 8, we only played a few songs.” Then he would show those words with an aggressive and guitaristic performance, less perfect as usual, but closer and more interesting, and benefited by the repertory.

“We had the set list prepared, but half an hour before, we changed it. Normally, we fight to choose it, but this time was more my taste, darker and for the fans.” Yet, don’t go now, there is even more: “We will start to record a new album at the end of the year, and the album will be released next [year], on my birthday. I think it’s cheesy enough to be a great idea”. There ironic; here instructive: “I’ve realized that all great artists always are concentrated in the same questions, those we think ourselves. If at some point, everyone is able to solve them, obviously, I wouldn’t be writing songs.” And existentialist  “We live in a time of generalized stupidity, and the big mistake is that people let themselves to be guided by faith, stop thinking and don’t count on the people around them, because of the dictate of that conscience that comes from a superior power. And excited: “I started to play because I wanted to do great songs and wake up proud of it every day.”
“Popularity came later and, although it doesn’t bother me, people around me haven’t decided to be famous nor want to be famous, that’s why I do the impossible to separate my private life from the music. And joker: “My parents haven’t come because they already have embarrassed us enough in 2003…They love my music, and in fact, they could be playing in the band, they are old enough”. Different sides of an incomparable musician.

  • Still no reviews sent in from Benicassim. Come on Spanish fans, help us out. The Benicassim page is just so empty and lonely without your reviews.

  • NME has a bit more about the new album:

  • THE CURE REVEAL FUTURE PLANS AT BENICASSIM

THE CURE revealed tonight at the BENICASSIM FESTIVAL in Spain tonight (August 5) that they plan to release a new album in 2006.

The goth legends delighted a partisan crowd on the Escenario Verde with a two-hour set which included highlights from the band’s 25-year plus back catalogue, including the classics ’Boys Don’t Cry’, ’Lullaby’ and ’Just Like Heaven’.

The band were thought to have split, but returned with an eponymous and critically acclaimed album in 2004, eight years after 1996’s ’Wild Mood Swings’. And Smith revealed before the band’s show that the band are planning a new album.

He said: “We want to start recording in October/November and get it out by birthday next year, which I know is quite cheesy.”

    Smith turns 47 on April 21 2006.

The star also revealed he intends to work with former Siouxsie And The Banshees colleague Steve Severin on new material.

Smith added: "I'm not sure though. We might kill each other!"

Well, at least he's admitting it's very cheesy. I would have used another word, but that's just me. : ) Now we hold our breath, cross our fingers, and say a few prayers that double R isn't producing again.

    (Thanks Steven)

  • Here's some transportation info for fans going to Greece:

  • "I gathered some information about the transportation to the area of the Greek Festival, as it is not summed up on the festival site. You can post it if you want, I think it will be helpful for foreigners:

BY CAR: U need to go into the Greek National Road and get the direction towards Lamia/Thessaloniki.  The festival area is near an exit called
'Malakasa', at the 37th km of the national road. There will be signs to guide you as well. From the centre, once u get into the national road it
should take u about 20 minutes or so. There is parking area.

BY TRAIN: From the station 'Stathmos Larisis' (Larisis Station) in the centre, u can get the train to Halkida (Χαλκίδα). You have to get off at
the station 'Sfendali' (Σφενδάλη). From there I was told its 10 min walking or so. The single ticket costs 2,60 Euros and there are trains every 30 min or 1 hour in the worst case. However, the last train returns from Sfendali at 23.09 so you might not catch it after the concert. The journey time should be about 30 minutes.

BY BUS: Usually, the company hires buses for the concerts at this area. I havent seen any announcement about the Cure, but I called them and
they will arrange it shortly. These buses leave also from 'Stathmos Larisis' , they cost 6 Euros return, and they take u to and back from the festival. The schedule will be something like:

    ATHENS-TERRA VIBE (GOING)

    FIST DEPARTURE  13.00 (or 14.00?)

    SECOND DEPARTURE 16.00

TERRA VIBE - ATHENS (COMING BACK)

    FIRST DEPARTURE  00.00

    SECOND DEPARTURE 01.30

The bad thing about these is that there is a limited number of tickets that u have to book in advance from the agency 'SUNWAYS' (15 A Xenofondos street, Syntagma, tel (0030) 210-3234513, Mond-Frid 9.00-18.00, Sat 9.00-14.00). They should become available next week or so.

Note: For anyone that plans to go to Turkey after Greece, there is a new train service from Thessaloniki to Instanbul. The train leaves every day
at 20.00 and takes u to Instanbul in 11 hours and 30 minutes. The ticket costs 48,24 Euro and includes a bed. From Athens, u can go to Thessaloniki in about 5 hours by bus or train, and it costs 20-30 Euros."

  • RS reveals plans for a new Cure album in April 2006. Here's the story from SoundGenerator:

  • Exclusive: New Cure album set for April '06 release
    6 Aug 2005
Robert Smith has revealed initial details for the band's 15th studio set.

The Cure will release their 15th studio album, the follow up to 2004's critically acclaimed self-titled release, during April 2006, soundgenerator can reveal.

Speaking this evening before a packed press tent at the 11th annual Benicassim Festival, Spain, the seminal rock vocalist revealed the band plan to begin recording this winter.

"We're recording October, November & December," he revealed to press, "and the new album will be released on my birthday." Smith's Birthday falls on April 21, which lines up a spring release date for the new set. No further details were mentioned at time of press.

2004's 'The Cure' continued the remarkable return to form found on 2000's 'Bloodflowers'. For a band many had thought were lapsing into mediocrity, the set was hailed as the band's best since 1989's 'Disintegration'.

Smith added he plans to work with core Suzie and The Banshees songwriter, and previous Cure producer, Steve Severin later this year.

The band have just taken to the Benicassim stage tonight (23:47CET), and plan on delighting the 30,000 crowd with a dark headline set, leaving off some of their biggest hits.

The LP will hit shelves on September 27.

  • The Cure are live on Le Mouv right now doing Fascination St. (Go Porl!), alt.end (pretty disjointed vocally, a real mess), The Blood!!! (Is that keyboards I'm hearing? Is it live or backing tapes? Maybe I'm wrong), The End of the World (why bother without Roger and the Moog? Porl doing the best he can, but he's no Moog), The Baby Screams!!!, Lullaby (Oh this is going to be interesting. Wow, worse than I feared. Again, Porl makes the most of a bad situation), Never Enough, M, Play For Today (very good), At Night!!!. Looks like that's it for now on Le Mouv.

  • More info on Dave Thompson's new Cure book:

  • In-Between Days
An Armchair Guide To The  Cure
    By Dave Thompson

    ISBN 1-905139-00-4
    Paperback 256pp
    235mm X 156mm
    UK August  05 £12.99
    US Nov  05 $19.95

The Cure's complete career, chronicled for the first time.

The Cure is one of the most respected and well-loved of rock's survivors, traceable right back to punk's fabled "Bromley contingent".
The band's labyrinthine story has at its centre the enigmatic, charismatic frontman Robert Smith, forever shuffling personnel, themes and styles to make enduring music without losing an iota of credibility.

In-Between Days is the first book to make sense of a uniquely versatile band who are far more than the Goth band, documenting their development
from the new wave attack of 1979's Boys Don't Cry, the existential rock of Seventeen Seconds, the near-religious angst of Faith, the joyous pop of Wish, the dark beauty of Disintegration - right up to the majesty of Bloodflowers and 2004's The Cure, consecutive 21st century masterpieces.

In-Between Days is also studies Robert Smith's brilliant interweaving literary influences from Mervyn Peake and Coleridge to  Albért Camus and
    Jean Cocteau.

    Additional Selling Points

This is also the first book to chronicle The Cure's justly-celebrated and often hilarious achievements in video with Tim Pope, such as "Close To Me", "Why Can't I Be You?" and "Lullaby".

Full story behind every single, album and album track and detailed record of every tour concentrating on key gigs, live performances of their best songs and more.

As well as rare photos, this also includes the most detailed Cure discography ever in print.

The last two Cure albums have seen the band's popularity soar to unprecedented heights.

The Cure retain a hugely loyal and dedicated fanbase.

Fresh from a triumphant LIVE8 performance.

    Marketing Notes

Part of an expanding and highly collectable series already featuring The Fall, Suede, Gary Numan and Nick Cave, with later volumes on Depeche Mode and Iggy Pop to come.

Reviews targeted in music press, Mojo, Uncut, Q, Record Collector and Classic Rock

The Cure have recently completed their most successful tour to date.

Let's just hope the book is more factual and truthful than the "selling points" and "marketing notes" are.

Update: "Just wanted to let you know that I already got the new book by Dave Thompson.  The UK Amazon has it for £9.09. The info you posted today has it being released in August, but it came out in June."

  • The Russian edition of Rolling Stone has a review of the latest remastered cds. Here's a scan of the article and an english translation:

  • "Today I've bought the august issue of russian Rolling stone and found the review of the de-luxe re-issues. It appeared to be quite interesting and I desided to translate it.

    Review by Andrey Bukharin.

    THREE STEPS IN DELIRIUM.

De-luxe re-issues of the three most gloomy The Cure’ albums.

“Seventeen seconds”, “Faith” and “Pornography” posturize the complete cycle, some kind of triptych from which the true story of The Cure begins. They laid the foundation of gothic style (alongside with some other British post-punk records) and vampire reputation that Robert Smith in more or less talented way squandered for years. And Smith himself considers not “Three Imaginary Boys” (his scholar attempt) but “Seventeen seconds” as the first album of the band. It  is still remain enigma how could young musicians that recently played simple punk-rock begin to play music on an absolutely different level. Smith, as if he heard some kind of call, led his comrades into gloomy depths of consciousness, going deeper and deeper with each step. And the role of Virgilius was played by, as usual, drugs, which boys began take to more and more.

“Seventeen seconds” is just a prelude to the horror, the first step, the visionary walk in the morning smoke full of ghost voices. Tracks of the album are atmospheric landscapes pinned with melancholic guitar parts where Smith sings in suspended sleepy voice of lost lunatic. “Faith”, that followed after, had been recorded slowly and hard; deaths in group’s families and influence of Joy Division caused its measured funeral mood. Faith or, more accurately, search for it – the main theme of the album which, in this re-issue, is accompanied by 28 minute instrumental track “Carnage visors: the soundtrack” (previously available only on original cassette edition).

“Seventeen seconds” and “Faith” had been recorded surprisingly good by virtue of Michel Hedges, a man with a very black sense of humor who worked with various post-punk bands a lot. But despite the mastery of producer and understanding, during recording of “Pornography” the band refused to work with Hedges in order to search for more complete self-realization and recorded album almost by themselves.

That is it sounds so rough and less professional than it’s predecessors, but it also became one of the reasons that made “Pornography” one of the most exciting records of early 80’s.

So the third step had been made.  None of The Cure’s records get further away from rock’n’roll than this one. Keyboards pushed guitars aside. Drums sounded like hammering down nails in coffin’ top, echo early Swans records. These pitch-dark songs are like some sacred monuments from unknown ages, like metaphysical landscapes of de Kiriko. Amazingly static music, where even Smith’s lyrics begin to loose verbs. Album ends with full disintegration: with cacophonic, tearing apart title track. Listening to these hymns of hopelessness it’s impossible to believe that the band became a gang of clowns with painted faces, that gathered full stadiums in 90th.

Today “Pornography” shocks, but in those times it reached Top 10 (first of band’s records). But those were the times when musicians made music against all rules and were praised with recognition.

The last thing to say is that all three albums were issued as double cds, where second disk filled with home and studio demos, live versions of songs and unreleased material – a fist for hardcore fans. But what is more important, remastered albums sound far and away better than previous issues."

    (Thanks Georgiy)

  • Here's a scan of a Cure article from Loka (Aug. 2005).

  • Update: And here's the english translation:

Reinventing or dying. That's the conclusion to which two of the members of The Cure have reached after thinking about it so much. At this stage (the band is older than 25 years!) both the guitarist and the keyboardist have decided to kick the band that has given them so much joy, snif, snif! A big loss that the sould of the band, Robert Smith, has overcome perfectly well. How? Giving the ex-Cure member Porl Thompson a second chance. If you would do anything in order to see these boys live, surprise! They are visiting us on the Benicàssim Festival.

    The Detail

    Smith's Multiple Jobs
Last year homonimous The Cure's album was out and since then Robert haven't stopped doing things. Now that his collegue Billy Corgan (ex-Smashing Pumpkins) has a solo album, he has collaborated with him in it, and how! He has covered Bee Gee's To love Somebody, it sounds great!

By the picture: He does everything so quick that he always lipsticks his mouth badly. He is hyperactive!

  • Cure at Benicassim possibly on Radio 3:

  • "I just wanted to let you know something really interesting about the Benicassim show that I think you haven´t posted yet. Radio 3, a Spanish radio station, is one of the official sponsors of the festival, and they´ll do a special schedule during the 3 days of the festivals. From 22:00 h till 2:00 they´ll play the most important concerts each day, and I guess they´ll air the show of the cure. Well, the concert´s supposed to end at 1:40, so maybe not the whole show if it starts a bit later, but almost... In 2002 they aired the cure show LIVE in Benicassim except for the last encore... The website of this
radio is http://www.rtve.es/rne/r3/, and of course you can listen it online just clicking "ESCUCHAR R3"."

  • RS article in Zone 09:

  • "in last weeks "Zone 09", the freely distributed city magazine of Ghent (a city in Belgium with telephone zone number 09 ) included an interview
with Robert Smith. To be honest, i don't know if it really was an interview... Anyway, in attachment you'll find my translation, so you can make up for yourself if it really was an interview, or just a recycling of some funny stories, but it surely is fun to read!

The never before aired ABC of Robert Smith and The Cure

“My life would produce terribly boring TV”

Booze, drugs, and new wave! On the verge of their 30th anniversary, the gentlemen of The Cure are attending the stage of the Lokerse Feesten. An impressive move ànd half a miracle, thus learns us an alphabetical view on the sometimes turbulent, sometimes disconsolate and from time to time just plain decadent live of Fat Bob & The Kings of Doom and Gloom.

Ancienne Belgique ( this is a famous venue in Brussels - Belgium )

When the band attended the Ancienne Belgique in 1982, the last show of the particularly sick Fourteen Explicit Moments tour, the vibe between Robert Smith and bassist Simon Gallup was just murderous. Gallup wanted to take over the guitar for the encores, which led to drummer Laurence “Lol” Tolhurst getting promoted bassist. Gary Biddles, part time roadie and friend of Gallup, took the vocals to his credit, but didn’t know any better then shouting ‘Smith is a wanker, Tolhurst is a wanker, only Simon is worth anything in this band’ and ‘The Cure is dead’ through the microphone. Smith, Gallup and Biddles started hitting each other, Tolhurst professionally continued to play. Smith and Gallup reportedly haven’t spoken to each other for the upcoming two years.

Barfight! ( that doesn’t need any explanation, does it? )

That the above mentioned incident was one waiting to happen, became apparent earlier when Gallup and Smith started a fight in France disputing –poor God- a bar note. Smith instantly flew back home and left a note behind saying he wouldn’t come back anymore. Gallup did the same thing. After a cool down period of three days and with still a few concerts to go, they both decided to err -*cough*- make the best of it.

    Curiosa

“What Ozzy Osbourne and Perry Farrell can do with Ozzfest and Lollapalooza, I can too” must have thought Robert Smith when last year he started the American Curiosa Festival. Admittedly, the human made bat was right all the way: with carefully selected and only heavily influenced by The Cure bands like Interpol and the Rapture, but also Mogwai, Muse ànd his own funny little gang, Smith had a –dark- massive line-up to offer.

Drank, drugs en depressie ( Booze, drugs and depression )

A scary cocktail which tends to be hard to digest, but was long time a solid meal for Smith. The non-stop swallowing, drinking and doom-thinking resulted in the darkest gems of The Cure: Faith in ’81, Pornography in ’82 and Disintegration in ’89, when the Cure-frontman was having difficulties with his star-status and he once more searched relieve in hallucinogenic products. Since the Bloodflowers-tour from 2000, Smith doesn’t drink before or during a concert ( note: during Werchter 2004 he DID drink beer ON stage, the liar! J ). Before that time, he says himself, he never was sober when getting on stage. The fact that his never ending thirst for alcohol got him the nickname Fat Bob can’t touch him: “It’s a genetic thing! I’m addicted!”. Two letters, Bob: AA!

    Easy Cure

When Smith, together with Laurence Tolhurst and Michael Dempsey started The Cure in 1976, they were in fact called Easy Cure. Two years later, the name got shortened to The Cure, because Smith thought the original sounded too “West Coast Hippie”. Still, he isn’t completely satisfied with “The Cure”. When a fan asked him back in ’96 what he would like to change most about the band, the answer shortly sounded: “The name!”.

    Familiebezoekjes ( family visits )

Robert Smith’s answer when we ask him what we are missing now that he turned down an offer from VH1 for a reality-show: “We have a very big family which likes to come on visit. My nephews and nieces (…) bring along their friends, because I am an eccentric but friendly uncle, who has an interesting house and doesn’t tell them when they should go to bed. (…) Those family visits probably are the most interesting aspect of my life. So that would give some terribly boring television!”

    Godfathers of Goth

Besides Masters of Melancholy and Kings of Doom and Gloom one of the often used nicknames for The Cure, albeit Smith himself doesn’t like it: “I’m tired to be known as a doomy goth casualty.” Also: “The press tries to portray me as a gloom-and-doom-singer. But take a look at Morrissey ( note: and here we go again… )! That man is a professional complainer!”

Hallo, met Bob? ( Hello, Bob speaking? )

Pretty unwordly, that Smith: “ I never answer if someone knocks on my door, and only the band members and my manager have my telephone number. Anyway, my phone doesn’t ring, so I never notice when someone calls. From time to time I just walk by and answer the phone to see if someone’s there.”

    Irak ( Iraq )

After 11 September this song surprisingly didn’t end up on Clear Channels List of Questionable Lyrics. Still, Killing An Arab, the very first single from The Cure, had some Sahara sand risen even before their was question of the Gulf War or Al-Qaeda. On behalf of that one song, record label Hansa, which had just signed them, fired the young band immediately. Even if the song wasn’t anything more then a poetic reflection of L’Etranger from Albert Camus, in which Smith wanted to show the complete futility of killing by the hand of a passage in which an Arab is shot on a beach.

    Jane Cosmetic’s #3 Reddest

Robert Smith’s favorite lipstick brand. Which brand of shoe smear he rubs in his hair is still a closely kept secret.

    Klonen ( Clones )

Solidly appearing on the first rows of a Cure concert: a horde of dressed in black Smith-clones. Or like Smith once accurately formulated himself: “I look less like myself then most of the people who attend our gigs.”

    Look

Reportedly, Robert Smith is allergic to looks. Robert Smith, bleak skin , red smeared-all-over lipstick, look-allergy, bats… Hm, would it be?

    Mankracht ( Manpower )

Four drummers, three guitarists, four keyboard players, three bassists and all together twelve fulltime band members ( sometimes, they just switched instruments ). Seen the number of  personnel changes, the Cure stable looks just like a pigeon house. The good news is that Paul ‘Porl’ Thompson, guitarist from 1976 till ’78 and from 1983 till ’93 is back in business for this tour.

    Nadenken ( to think )

There’s no doubt about Smith’s lyrics being food for philosophers and psychologists. But to be part of the breed of the Great Thinkers, it isn’t enough to just listen to a Cure-record. Smith: “Maybe it’s a bit of an untrimmed generalization, but fans who consider Pornography and Disintegration to be amongst their favorite albums, are usually more alert and have their own ideas about things.”

Orale fixatie ( Oral fixation )

Most people go through an oral phase in the first years of their lives, Robert Smith a bit later: “For a long time, I was obsessed by the mouth and the idea of bodily openings in general. I’m quite sure the drugs a partly to blame.”

    Pornografie ( Porn )

It was to be expected that the oppressively dark content of the amazing Pornography wouldn’t avoid journalists to ask Smith about his personal view on porn. Fortunately, good ole’ Bob is always ready for a corky quote: “It doesn’t shock me to see someone fuck a monkey. I rather get pissed by someone attacking someone else because he is fucking a monkey.”

    Queens Park Rangers

The Cure-frontmans favorite soccer club. Smith is even known to ask European festival organizers not to let their gigs coincide with World Cup matches.

Russische wagens ( Russian cars )

“You are doing bad if you do drugs to loose your natural brakes.” If Smith by this points out to that one time in 1986 when he, during one of his by night off-road car drives drove his drunken self ànd his whole gang of a mountainside an inch from total destruction, then indeed he was doing bad. Everyone came out of the crash without a scratch, but Roberts Lada didn’t survive the crazy ride.

    Siouxsie & The Banshees

When The Cure toured together with the Siouxsie & The Banshees in 1979, and Banshee John McKay called it a day, Smith stood in as replacement and played two shows every night. Till ’84, Smith would be part of the Banshees, with a few hectic periods in which he seriously considered definitely switching The Cure for The Banshees ( note: … NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…OO!!! ). He got along very well especially with bassist Steve Severin, who introduced Smith during wild parties to LSD. As The Glove, the two of them recorded Blue Sunshine.

    Tekenfilm ( Cartoon )

You are only really an icon when your well known face shows up in let’s say The Simpsons. Robert Smith made a remarkable cameo in Southpark, where he in the instance of a transformed superhero swiftly swung Barbara Streisand into space. Or something like that.

    Uilenbril (Very thick glasses )

The Cure-singer has terribly bad eyes and can’t see further then an arm length without his glasses. Not that it bothers him to see his audience as one big glow: “Sometimes I come to the end of a song, open my eyes and see all those faces staring at me. It’s quite horrifying.”.

    Vaderschap ( Fatherhood )

Oh, those cozy haircuts! Those with child-make-up smeared faces! We can imagine ourselves some things about Smith’s issue. Only, he’ll never let it come that far, because Smith and his wife Mary Poole consciously decided to remain childless. Smith: “I’m big in the uncle department. I enjoy it when kids come over during the weekend. I love it to go out with them and learn them all sorts of bad tricks. But I loath the idea of being a father. I’m too undisciplined and egoistic.”.

    Werchter 1981

And again uproar on Belgian ground, this time on the field of Werchter. Because everything was pretty behind on scheme, The Cure blandly got ordered in the middle of their set to stop playing, given the organization thought the audience had paid more in particular for acts like The Dire Straits and Robert Palmer. “We weren’t playing for half an hour”, Smith remembers, “or Robert Palmers crew started making signs we had to stop. Someone even came on stage and shouted: “If you don’t stop playing, we’re gonna pull the plug.”. Simon immediately began shouting through the mic: “Fuck Robert Palmer! Fuck rock’n’roll!” and we started a slow version of A Forest, which lasted for about 15 minutes. It was fucking brilliant. Only, when we were done, they threw our equipment of the backside of the stage.”

    Xcuus

“Just say you’re insane…” A favorite, usable for about every occasion excuse of Robert Smith. In his case, we like to believe him on his word.

    Yuck!

“I wake up and look at myself and think: Yuck!” Robert Smith telling on MTV how he wrestles with his image in the mirror on some mornings.

    Zelfmoord ( Suicide )

Even if The Cure is still alive and kicking, death – and especially in the tragic form of suicide – is a constant in an otherwise terribly normal life of weeping-willow Smith. A doctoral student who dedicated his thesis to The Cure’s lyrics, even came to the conclusion that Smith died exactly 74 times ( note: I guess in the mean time you can add some 20 or so more… ). To the singer, suicide letters in his mailbox are as usual as electricity bills. Smith happens to live near Beachy Head, a particularly loved chalk cliff near the British coast.

TW: On your album, you actually lured the Cure’s Robert Smith into the studio to sing backup – on, of all things, the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody!”

BC: Isn’t it great? He recorded it in England, and he was great. But you should have heard this phone call [affects a posh British accent] “So, do you know what song you want me to sing on?” And I was like, “Yeah, I’ve got this one, but it’s not my song, it’s by the Bee Gees...” Pause. Pause. Pause. Then: “The Bee Gees? What... the... f--k!” But then he was like, “Okay, if you want me to do it, I’ll do it.” And now he loves it, he thinks it’s great. He even did his own mix of the song at home, and when we heard his mix we were like, “Wow! His mix is way better than ours!” So we actually changed our mix to make it more like his mix. So he even contributed on that level, as well.

"There was a small piece in The Sun today saying that Rachael Stevens has sampled Lullaby for a song on her new album! Hmmm should be "interesting". "

"I've noticed today that the dvd "Paolo Maldini - Il Film", a celebrative disc of the career of the italian football player, published in 2004, features Cure music, as it is said in the back cover. But I don't know which songs are there 'cos I haven't bought it."

"This morning -friday 29 - on french tv channel La Cinquieme, they had a replay of a program called 'Question Maison' (it's a program about
architecture, house furniture, interior design, decoration, and so on), and in the section 'SOS maison' ('help wanted' - people who have question about
a room, want to change things in their house, ask for the help from their architect adviser), the full intro + 1st verse + more of 'jumping someone
else's train' was used as background music."

"today on french/german tv channel Arte, 19h00 - 19h40, they had a program called ARTE Découverte  "Les fermetures sous toutes les coutures" which was the 'history of the button, zipper, and velcro'.  Quite funny but informative really...  when they spoke about the punk movement and the
leather jackets, I was hoping they would maybe play an early cure song  But just as they were moving on to another period without having played one to my disappointment, all the intro of 'love song' was used to illustrate the creation of a dress that is several metres long and that one can zip - or
unzip - around one woman's body.  nice."

    (Thanks Fabien G)

"Lil' goth dancing boy was wearing a Bloodflowers concert tee during his audition on a new TV show, "So You Think You Can Dance", on Fox here in Los Angeles.  He didn't make it to the next round. Nice shirt, but no rhythm."
