  • As I'm sure you know by now, the official site was updated with news of Inland Invasion 3 selling out in record time. Don't give up though if you still don't have tickets, as there are still plenty available. Even after that post, Ticketmaster still had tickets for sale on their website (though it seems to come and go, and you will probably have to be lucky to get them there), and KROQ has quite a few to giveaway. Also, there are more than a hundred tickets listed for sale at EBAY, and of course, you can always try the ticket brokers.
  • Now that the show is officially sold out, I WILL take Tickets For Sale ads. But I will only list tickets that are selling for face value. If you are looking to make a profit, go to EBAY. If you want to help out other fans, then send in your ad and I'll put it up for you.

  • Posted a new article/interview from the West Australian in the Interview section.

  • Remember that MTV2 poll from a few months back? Looks like we all did a pretty good job:
  • "MTV2 presents "22 Greatest Bands", a two-hour show featuring bands whose bodies of work have made a powerful impact on the world of music over the past two decades. From Van Halen and Oasis to Metallica and No Doubt, we'll explore the industry's most celebrated and sometimes controversial bands, whether they've got unique style, unparalleled longevity or undeniable chemistry. And unlike other countdown shows that are determined by an MTV editorial department, this list has been chosen through online voting, thus putting the list and its' order into the hands of the fans.

  • Curespotting:
  • "People may already know about this, but just in case...

I am currently reading a book by Scottish author Ian Rankin. It's got various references to The Cure dotted throughout, including the title: "The Hanging Garden"

I won't spoil it for anyone else who decides to read it but I will say that there is a place in the booked named after a Cure song - and a character named after a Cure song. There are also quotes from "The Hanging Garden" at the start of each chapter. The book is littered with other musical references - but The Cure merit the most!

I have read several of Rankin's books and they are first class. He writes dark, witty, intelligent crime novels set in Edinburgh. Not your run-of-the-mill detective rubbish. Rankin has a website: www.ianrankin.net and his publisher is ORION."

    "from www.side-line.com:

Simple Minds will continue touring Europe instead of starting recordings for their new album. In a reaction Simple Mind's Jim Kerr said: "With the music industry in crisis at the moment, and lots of back catalogue coming out, we thought that playing live would be the best bet for this year." A US-tour is still being planned though all depends on how US promotors react. The band itself would prefer doing a joined tour in the US "with someone like The Cure if possible". Almost ready for release is a double DVD, called "Seeing The Lights". It will feature all the video promos of the singles on disc one. The other is Simple Minds live at Verona. Also expected is a boxset including rarities that Virgin have got the rights to such as radio sessions and shows and even the soundtrack to some television appearances."

    (Thanks Antti)

"during a 30min report on the 80es here in Germany called 'Alles kommt wieder' (=everything returns), 28th August, 2003 (ZDF), 'Cold', 'Other Voices', 'The Figurehead', 'Close To Me', 'Siamese Twins', 'A Strange Day', 'The Drowning Man' and also 'All Cats Are Grey' were chosen amongst other bands (Joy Division, Killing Joke,...) as backgroundmusic. quite strange in that amount and also the songs they chose - seems a The Cure fan must be working for ZDF..."

"Ihave found this article about that movie Charlotte Sometimes http://www.asiaarts.ucla.edu/070303/20030703_ericbyler.html."

"On the last May issue of an italian magazine (sorry for the delay...), "Musica!" there's a mention of Robert and a little photo, probably for Trilogy, in the "6 unforgettable guitar solos", together with Hendrix, Cobain, Santana, Page and the Audioslave/RATM guitarist Tom Morello. A few lines saying: "Robert Smith has driven the 80s "new wave" painting it dark. "A forest" is a monument to that generation spleen"."

    (Thanks Pietro)

"On channel 4 at 9pm tonight 28/8/03 (UK) on a programme called "Masters & Servants" where families take it turns to be Masters/Servants for the week. The closing music was an acoustic version of Just Like Heaven, with no singing unfortunately."

    (Thanks Shakedanshake)

"Hey, just wanted to pass along this article I came across today re: Amy Lee and Evanescence. There's a mention of The Cure in the second paragraph. http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/entertainment/6623769.htm "

    (Thanks Rob)

"i was reading today in the September issue of GQ-america about a new group called Kings of Leon. for the most part this band sounds really strange... but they mentioned Robert smith in the article and i wanted to just tell you :

After dinner, it's time for Followill family parlor tricks. Caleb and Jared sit across from eachother at a big round table and prepare to demonstrate their telepathic powers. Somebody whispers a celebrity name to Caleb-Robert Smith of the Cure. Caleb locks eyes with his younger brother;within seconds Jared picks up the transmission. "Robert Smith," he says nonchalantly."

    (Thanks Kathy)

"Last Friday August 22nd. i attend to a gig from a local band called 'Fobia', which by the way in their early beginnings (1989-1990) had a very strong influence from The Cure visually and musically speaking, and at the end of the concert once the lights went on, the first song that was played was ‘Killing an Arab’, needless to say that i was very pleased. I wait for the next song to hear more of their selection when ’10.15’ started, they were playing the ‘Standing on a Beach’, record, besides the fact the concert was awesome the way out of the venue was also great.

In the same venue last July 14th. Placebo performed and in the musical selection before the show, they included ‘Primary’ and another Cure song that i can´t remember.

    (Thanks Oscar)

    Overview

'One of the most influential bands of all time' THE GUARDIAN

'The Cure are suddenly hip again' MOJO

'One of the greatest singles bands of the past 20 years' NME

Recently, there's been a 'Cure Revival' in the press and the band are being cited by new acts such as Hot Hot Heat, AFI, Zwan, Good Charlotte, Deftones, The Dandy Warhols and even Tricky as a major influence on their music. Features and news pieces on The Cure have also appeared in The Face, Time Out, NME, Mojo, The Guardian and Q. In addition to this, 'Inbetween Days' is being used as the soundtrack to the new TV ad for the Fiat Punto. It's official - The Cure are cool again!

2001's 'Greatest Hits' album will be repromoted from the 8th September and available in stores from the 15th. The album spans their 25 year and 20 album career and the band have racked up an amazing 27 million album sales worldwide. The album will be available as a limited edition double CD. CD1 is the standard tracklisting and CD2 is a one-off collection of acoustic tracks, recorded in September 2001. The run-on format will be a single disc with the same tracklisting as CD1 of the double pack above. Both the limited edition double CD and the run-on single CD are UK exclusive versions that contain 1 extra track, Caterpillar.

We will only be promoting the album through a huge targeted TV advertising campaign.

    (Thanks Chris)

  • 'Pornography' featured in French magazine Les Inrockuptibles:
  • "Here's a first comment on Pornography's article red in the French Mag. Les Inrockuptibles :

First The Cure is not on the cover (just a mention you can find inside an article about the album). The main picture is well know with Lol, Robert and Simon wearing black leather jackets, Robert staring at the ground. The article in itselft is fantastic because :

1- it's very very well written,

2- according to me it shows why Pornography has been loved as the biggest album ever or perfectly hated because it goes too far,

3- it comes just after another incredibly great album, Nevermind. The only sad difference is Kurt never came back from Nevermind...

There are a few pieces of interviews with Lol and Robert that have been probably done recently and especially. "

    (Thanks David)

"Just a note to mention that the magazine "les Inrockuptibles" have chosen pornography for the mythical record article this week (august 20 to august 26) The article is nice and the review is very interesting. Les inrockuptibles seems to surf on the cure revival wave due to so many bands that say they were influenced by robert smith and the cure.. its nice but they used to be so bad with cure album reviews that you dont need to buy the magazine, just read it in a shop !! NME / Les inrocks, same battle !!!"

    (Thanks Philippe)

  • Cure cover:
  • "yesterday, i was attending 'De Dijlefeesten', a free annual festival in Mechelen ( a city in Belgium ), and there was some crazy guy performing, called 'Mambo Kurt'. This guy is a German artist, who covers songs on his electric orgue ( dating from the '70 ). Basically, he takes melodies from famous songs and puts soms beats and bossa-nova rhymes on it. At a certain point in his show, he opened a song with this Ali Baba and Alladin reminding atmosphere ( if you see what i mean ), and i was sure i knew the melody from somewhere. And when he started kicking in the lyrics with the good old ' Staring at the sea...', it turned out to be his 'arrangement' of The Cure's Killing An Arab! It was pretty funny ( he's works are NOT to be taken serious ). Amongst other 'chosen' bands, there were Rammstein ( you should've heard that one ), Nirvana, Slayer; AC/DC and even Depeche Mode ( "The world's best electric orgue band" )(!!!)."

    (Thanks Laurent)

  • Curespotting:
  • "billy howerdel from a perfect circle in an interview mentioned the cure. here's the blurb:

Patrick: If you could share the stage with any bands, past or present, who would they be?

Billy: Um. Like a festival thing?

Patrick: Anything you want. Any bands. Your ultimate show.

Billy: Uh. In no particular order. The Cure, PJ Harvey, Mazzy Star and if we were lucky enough to be in the bill, so be it.

"I was Listening to the BBC world service last night and there was a program where they compared books about relationships. IE : "Men are From Mars Women are from Venus" and "Women Cant Read maps" Everytime they talked about Men they spoke over "Boys Dont Cry" and Everytime they spoke about women it was over "The Female Of The Species" Its that secret agent in BBC archiving again !!!"

    (Thanks Gary)

"The Cure are mentioned on the Get Up Kids' (a great emo band from the US) official site (http://www.thegetupkids.com) on their journal about recording their new album (http://www.thegetupkids.com/studio-journal/index.htm): "I think a good rule of thumb is to try and bring the record in at just under an hour. Otherwise it gets boring. That's just me though. Well, Disintegration is longer than that but our record isn't going to be very good to fall asleep to."

The Get Up Kids are big Cure fans and have also recorded a cover of Close To Me (which is on their rarities album "Eudora"), which has to be one of the best Cure covers I've heard. Check it out."

    (Thanks ManInsideMyMouth)

"Today I´ve been reading some old magazines, and among them, I have found one in which The Cure is mentioned. It was the issue from June, from the Spanish free magazine "40 Magazine", and it says as follows: "Radiohead: Another Masterpiece Radiohead has needed only seven weeks to record his new album in study. The concentration in the British countryside has given its results, and the critis are comparing this Hail in the Thief to Ok Computer; something similar has happened to the albums Pornography and Disintegration by The Cure."

    (Thanks Sharon)

  • Once again, not really Cure news, but hopefully it will be soon. And even if it isn't, this is still great news:
  • "I honestly don't know exactly how much value this news is to Cure fans, but the recent comments regarding the Dom Joly show brought it to mind.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3177479.stm

Above is a link to a news article stating that the BBC is planning to put the entirety of the their radio and television archives online for the public to use for free. Unfortunatly, there isn't any specific information beyond their intentions.

While this isn't directly related to the Cure, I imagine that there's bound to be some incredible old footage, performances and interviews buried in there. And beyond that, it's just a really cool thing for them to do!"

    (Thanks James)

  • So how did everyone do with the tickets? Anybody get pit through Ticketmaster? If you didn't, there's still a chance to win some, before resorting to ebay or ticket agencies. From the KROQ website: "KROQ Street Team members can enter to win pit tickets. If you aren't a Street Team member join now.".
  • Update: The contest is only open to residents of California. Of course, there ARE ways around that...

(Thanks Anah, Amy, Mindy, Lauchlin and Zach )

  • Blank & Jones 12" remix of "A Forest" now available:
  • "After much searching I have found that http://www.homerun.de are currently selling the Blank & Jones 12" of A Forest and ship internationally."

Update: "www.deejay.de will ship the 12" to european countries. other dj-shops: www.decks-records.de and www2.web-records.com. please always ask for availability!"

  • Cure cover:
  • "It's a lounge version done by Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine. Funny, it was recorded at the KROQ studio, and now The Cure are headlining a concert put on by that very station.

Here's the website with the info: http://www.ideatown.com/rc/av-bl.html

And here's the exact info on the site: (it can be downloaded from the site) "Just Like That Heaven" by Richard Cheese MP3 audio file (1.9mb, 2:46) This never-before-released demo track, an early cover of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven," was recorded on a Saturday night at 9PM on March 21, 1999 by RC at the studios of KROQ Radio. RC made a number of incorrect lyrical interpolations, but made up for it with some saucy phrasing and naked emotion. The piano (the only instrument) was played at a different session by Mitchell Sigman, who would later go on to perform with Berlin, Seratonin, and other bands that end in "in"."

  • Not really Cure news, but since there is sort of a link between Dom and The Cure... :
  • "Anyone hoping for another Cure appearance on This Is Dom Joly (or anyone like me who missed both airings of the last appearance when they did The Kiss and are still hoping for another repeat showing) are out of luck as according to today's Daily Mail the show has been axed due to abysmal ratings. This won't be a surprise to anyone who saw the show. Joly is apparently now going to concentrate on "more mainstream" shows for BBC1 and BBC2. Such a shame as the first TV show he did for Channel4, Trigger Happy TV, was pure genius (well, at least the first series..) and everything he has done since has totally sucked. Still, such is the price you pay when you sell your soul and move over to our state-run TV station.(Hey, it isn't called British Broadcasting Corporation for nothing!) "

    (Thanks Dave Ace)

  • The official site has been updated again, with news of a Blank & Jones website for their remix of 'A Forest' (lots of good stuff there) and on how you can help Mark Saunders raise money for the 'NATIONAL SCLEROSIS SOCIETY NYC CHAPTER' .
  • (Thanks Nika)

  • Good luck to everyone trying to get the pre-sale tickets today. If you still need the info about it, check out the news page at the official site, or my tour dates page. Remember that the sale starts at noon pacific time, so that's 1pm mountain, 2pm central and 3pm eastern. For other areas across the world, please consult the World Time Server.
  • Three questions though. First, Danielle wants to know the following:

"Do you or any of your readers know whether there is a pit in front of the orchestra seating. I have heard conflicting reports and I have never been there. Thanks for any help you can give me."

And I was wondering how the second stage is set up there. Is it outside of the main venue, out in the concession area (like Starplex in Dallas), or is it off to the side of the main stage? Also, I've heard that the second stage runs from 9 or 10am until 2pm, when the main stage kicks in, is that correct? Thanks.

Update: "Last year at the Inland Invasion II featuring the Sex Pistols and a bunch of other “punk” bands, there was in fact a GA pit section in the front of the venue. Also, the second stage was in a field off to the side of the main part of the venue. This stage started at like 11am and ran until the early afternoon. The main stage started during the last second stage bands set, so there was some overlap but not too much. There was also very little shade at this place so bring some sun screen. Also, as we flew to LA from NJ last year, we had no idea that this place was in the middle of the desert. It was hot, hard to breathe and there were dust storms (probably caused by the mosh pit at the second stage). If that weren’t bad enough, people decided to set fires and were burning the plastic cups and whatever else they could get their hands on.

That being said, the Inland Invasion last year was very well organized and the sound was fairly good. It was an amazing show and I wish I could go this year. Anyone who manages to make it out to southern California should have a great time!

One last thing: if you are flying in, the Ontario California airport is closer to the venue than LAX, but it is still a ½ hour drive, so rent a car! "

    (Thanks Brian)

  • Interesting news from Robert in Region 4, a dvd magazine in Australia:
  • "Yesterday i bought a magazine titled "REGION 4" which is an Australian DVD magazine. It has an interview in it which coincides with the release of Trilogy in Australia. Two VERY intersting points were mentioned by Robert in this interview. I'll type out the 2 important questions now , the whole lot later.

the first question seems to suggest that "Show" will be re-released on DVD.

R4: Did the availability of the DVD format make the project more appealing to you?

RS: Yeah , we've made two films in the past , one in 85 i think , for cinema release, The Cure In Orange, which was good . I have mixed with sound before but that was in Dolby, cinema surround. We did another film in 92 and that was on super 16 but that was just for video. It was terribly dissapointing seeing the commercial copies of the video that went on sale, Actually thats going to be re-released on DVD pretty soon.

the second question is even more exciting and makes 2004 look like a great year.

R4: Earlier you spoke about going into the recording studio in September, is that what's next for The Cure?

RS: Yes, we`ve signed a deal with Ross Robinson, an American producer to do the next album, the first time we've worked with a producer since the very first album. He has a burning desire to make The Cure album and the time felt right to do something different so i'm quite looking forward to it. The final thing with Trilogy is I wanted it to underline, to be like a full stop of the first twenty-five years of The Cure. To mark it with something that was meaningful, and summed up what I felt we had done. By doing my three favourite albums, I suppose that's what I was trying to get at , a silver anniversary celebration. I was 100% that the Bloodflowers album would be the last , but when we started doing this film I suddenly realised that I really do like playing with this line-up. So, unless we fall out in the studio, I imagine we'll be playing the Southern Hemisphere next year."

    (Thanks Fuji)

  • Kosheen "borrowing" from The Cure?:
  • "Just heard the new 'Kosheen' album called 'KOKOPELLI' which is on BMG. Check it out if you can as it has very very Cure influenced keyboard / bass sound to it. Track one 'Wasting my time' is an obvious rip off of 'In your house' it's incredible how they have managed to get away with not crediting The Cure on it? Total rip off of the song as you will hear. Other tracks are very close to The Cure's sound as well in places but I need to give it a few more plays before I can judge it further. Go to www.kosheen.com for info on the band."

    (Thanks Chris)

"I was in Our Price on Saturday shopping for some singles when I heard what sounded like a modernised version of 'In Your House' pumping out over the instore stereo. I listened on the next track: Kosheen's current single "All In My Head" which had initially reminded me of 'Wrong Number' somewhat because of the guitar sound/style. I carried on browsing as a very 'Never Enough' sounding track played through and then a track with an awesome bass riff, kinda like the stuff you'd hear on 'Pornography'. I asked the dude behind the counter if this was all the new Kosheen album 'Kokopelli', and he confirmed that it was.

I bought the album and played the opening track 'Wasting My Time' back to back with 'In Your House' and they're in the same key and everything... There is perhaps ONE note in the final part of the riff that MIGHT be different.

I'm mostly pleased that The Cure sound/feel is working it's way into the mainstream, but I'm also disappointed that Kosheen failed to mention The Cure or Robert Smith in their sleeve notes, as this album owes so much to our favourite band. What I'm saying is, I would like Robert and Co to get the direct recognition they deserve for all this stuff that's coming out which is so heavily influenced by them... I wish these bands would be upfront and say "Wasting My Time uses the riff from In Your House by The Cure - go out and buy Seventeen Seconds!" instead of vaguely mentioning them once in a generic four page biog.

Anyway, don't get me wrong, I like (sonically) what Kosheen have done here - after all I bought the album, on the basis that it sounds like a pepped up version of 'Mixed Up'. But I am a bit confused about the fact that I've lined their pockets just because I like the element of their music that is reminiscent of The Cure... The Kosheen lyrics are a bit simple-mainstream-pop for me (all "I'll be there for you" type stuff) - not particularly poetic like Robert's words, but then, the singer does seem to "mean it".

And now BBC Radio One are using several tracks (including 'Wasting My Time') as audio backdrops to their news reports!

Anyone else heard this album? Any comments?"

    (Thanks James)

"have just been reading the comments on the Kosheen albumn Kokopelli. I must firstly say that it is very good in its own right - the vocal style is pretty unique and the production has a very 'live festival' feel to it. Bit difficult to say that they are a Cure rip-off band given this and their drum and basse-type roots. Tracks are heavy on base that is reminiscent of the Cure. And Wasting my Time is very very familiar. But let's not go overboard and just enjoy it!"

    (Thanks Rich)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Congrats to The Cure and The Police for being the first two bands ever inducted into the RetroBUZZ Hall of Fame on August 10th!!! The url is http://www.1029thebuzz.com. They do this retro show on Sunday mornings and they always play a good dose of The Cure and many other great bands from the 80s.

My other Curespotting was at a David Gray show on July 31st in Nashville. Before he took the stage, Friday, I'm in Love was played. "

  • Looks like there is going to be a pre-sale for Inland Invasion tickets on Thursday at Ticketmaster.com. Unfortunately, that's all I know right now. If any one has anything else to add, please send it in.
  • Update: The Cure have updated the official site with all of the pre-sale info, so go check it out. KROQ says you have to sign up to be a member of their Street Team, in order to get the info, but thanks to The Cure, we don't need to worry about that nonsense.

Also, they have posted who will play the Main Stage, and who will be on the Second Stage.

(Thanks KGR, Jason, Lars, Jeff, Kevin and Kristi)

  • The Blank & Jones remix of 'A Forest' is up for pre-orders:
  • "The Blank and Jones "A Forest" Maxi-CD is available for pre-order at Amazon.de. Projected release date is September 15. Price is only EUR 5,99, but EUR 14,00 for shipping to the U.S. That comes out to roughly $22.00 US. A bit pricey, but I ordered anyway. :) "

    (Thanks Brad)

  • Cure covers:
  • "Mr Alphabet has done two interesting and quite different covers of "Inbetween Days" and "Piggy in The Mirror" to hear at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mr_alphabet/"

    (Thanks Kate)

And more about that 'Forever Young' cd with kids singing 'Boys Don't Cry' :

"maybe you already know it, but here in France there is a band made of kids who covered "We will rock you" from Queen for an ad. Because of the success of the song, they decided to do an entire album called "Forever Young" with pop-new wave classics. And of course, there is a cover of The Cure. The song is "Boys Don't Cry"... the sound is very reaggae. If you want to hear a sample, go here."

    (Thanks Jean-François)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Music Zone in the Metrocentre (England) are having a book clearout and they were selling Paul Mather's new Siouxsie And The Banshees Official Biography for £5 (cover price £9.99). Didn't bother buying it myself as I'm not that interested in their story (although I like 90% of the music) however I did have a quick read through and found a few quotes from Robert. I've never seen these quotes before, so it's possible he may have been interviewed recently for the book - I'm pretty sure they were new comments.

The only Robert quote I can properly remember is "When they originally asked McGeoch to join the band on guitar they actually wanted me to stay as well. I think they wanted to turn the Banshees into a full-on guitar band"

The most interesting comments about Robert's time in the band came from Budgie and Severin. Budgie appears to be putting across a sympathetic point of view. With regards to Robert's departure from The Banshees Budgie said "I didn't even know at the time that Robert was doing a double-shift (in reference to working with both The Banshees and The Cure at the same time - my comment) Nobody ever sat Robert down and asked how he was, how he was feeling. I think that was part of the problem."

Severin's comments appeared less positive: "Robert wanted to document the fact that he was part of the band, he wanted to appear on a record - so we made Hyena. It seemed like a good idea at the time......"

The "seemed like a good idea at the time" comment did take me by surprise a bit especially as the last I heard about Robert and Severin was that they had patched things up a little after meeting at somebodies concert or something. (I think?).

There's a photo of Robert and Severin (professional/posed shot for The Glove) and I think only one other which was a shot of The Cure backstage with The Banshees on tour. If anybody's interested it's an all-white book with Siouxsie on the cover,

I'm not sure if it's even supposed to be available yet as I could only find it on one website (a US site) and the release date isn't until September 2003 !"

Update: "I picked up a copy of Paul Mather's new Siouxsie and the Banshees book at the HMV high street store in Portsmouth (UK) for £4.99 reduced from £9.99 in their book sale. Perhaps this will be of interest to any local fans out there."

    (Thanks Dave Ace and Mike)

"I was just watching a show called "Totally Gay" on Vh1, and during a segment about 'metrosexuals', which are straight men who have picked up 'homosexual' grooming habits (ie caring about how they look, shaving certain places, etc) , they were playing "Boys Don't Cry" in the background."

    (Thanks Renfield)

"A friend of mine told me that two weeks ago, in a Spanish soap opera about a the life of some dancers at their dance school, named "Un Paso adelante", broadcasted in the Spanish channel named Antena 3TV, they danced "Lullaby", dressed in black and dark colours dresses. He told me that it was brilliant! "

  • Robert also called KROQ to give some info about the show and you can listen to it by clicking on Sight & Sound under Kevin & Bean. Here are the most important "news bits":
  • -They are still uncertain as to what they will play at the Inland Invasion show e.g. singles or a stripped down version of the Trilogy shows. Robert seemed to indicate that it would be some sort of compromise between the two and that they would probably play one or two new songs at the show.

    - The band will do a 90 minute set, but will try to stretch it out a bit more if they can.

    - The music for the new album is basically done but Robert is still working on the lyrics.

-They will try to record the album in six weeks and have it done by the end of the year.

-They will tour the US next year.

-Robert said they would be doing some stuff while they were in the U.S. but didn't mention anything specific except of meeting with Ross Robinson.

And before you e-mail about Robert's assertion that they've never shared the same bill as Duran Duran, yes they both played the WKQX Twisted Christmas show in Chicago on Dec. 11th, 1997. Maybe Robert just WANTS to forget about that. Chain of Flowers, your source for useless facts. : )

Useless Fact Update: Daryl also writes about this momentous event in his diary page on the official site -

"11th dec 1997 - chicago - it's a very early start... it's a four hour flight and we cross a couple of time zones and lose 2 hours... we arrive in the windy city and it's seriously cold... but we are met by the warmest minibus crew in the world; thanks keith and his friend... we check into the hotel... then onto the united center... simon le bon bursts into the cure dressing room... "hi robert!"... we all run and hide and leave robert to it... until the cure go onstage and play to 18,000 loud fans... it's late when we come off and it is definitely time to sleep..."

    (Thanks Chris, Boris and Jeremy)

  • The latest on the Sept. 20th show in Devore, Ca. :
  • The show is apparently the KROQ Inland Invasion 3, which is usually about a 9-hour show with a main stage and a second stage.

All official details will be announced on the Kevin & Bean show on monday morning at 7:15.

The show will be held on Sept. 20th, 2003 at the Hyundi Pavillion in Devore, Ca. It holds 65,000 people and is supposed to be the largest outdoor amphitheater in the US.!

The Cure are still "unofficially" playing the show. It won't be made "official" until monday, but you can count on them being there.

Who else is playing? Reliable sources say Psychedelic Furs, Echo & the Bunnymen, Violent Femmes and Berlin(?) are all confirmed. Rumors of Siouxsie & the Banshees and New Order appear to be false.

Also, I just got this in an e-mail, which is very interesting:

[from the www.burneddowndays.com forum, a Psychedelic Furs website]

Bear in mind that this is still a TENTATIVE list since KROQ hasn't announced anything official yet, blah blah blah.

    The Cure
    Duran Duran
    Hot Hot Heat
    Echo & the Bunnymen
    Violent Femmes
    Psychedelic Furs
    Dashboard Confessional
    Soft Cell
    Bow Wow Wow
    Interpol
    General Public
    Fountains of Wayne

Interpol!!! Yes! Again, not confirmed, but nothing will be "officially" confirmed until monday. Glad to see this isn't strictly a "retro" show, even if I'm not a fan of some of these bands. Strange that Berlin isn't on that list though. I hope they didn't pull out of it.

(Thanks Dave, Grumpy and epliogue of youth)

  • More on the Blank & Jones remix of 'A Forest':
  • "Here´s a scan of the Blank & Jones 12" - a forest - feat. Robert Smith. Out on Aug 21st(Vinyl!) Ridiculous Boom-Boom-version, silly cover..."

    (Thanks S.)

  • Also, I put the 30 second "preview" of the remix on the Audio page.

    Aug. 15th

  • Well, its out there now...If you've checked the tour dates page over the last week or so, you probably noticed a tease about something possibly happening in the US next month. And while it hasn't been 100% confirmed just yet, The Cure are very likely playing a show on Sept. 20th just outside of Los Angeles. Here's the info so far:
  • KROQ presents

    The Cure
    The Psychedelic Furs
    Violent Femmes
    Berlin

Also rumored to be on the bill - Echo & the Bunnymen and Siouxsie & the Banshees (at this time, I can not confirm either of them)

Sept. 20th, 2003 at the Hyundi Pavillion in Devore, Ca.

Just to reiterate, The Cure are not 100% confirmed just yet, but they are very close.

Also, there is no truth to the rumor that this will be called the "Roger O'Donnell, This Is Your Life" festival. : )

  • MTV.com mentions the new album and the b-sides:
  • "While preparing to record a new album next month with noted rap-rock producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Limp Bizkit), the Cure are assembling tracks for an upcoming box set, expected to drop this fall. Coinciding with the set will be a reissue of all the band's LPs, including 1980's Boys Don't Cry, 1982's Pornography and 1987's Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me."

Note: Recording DOES NOT start next month.

    (Thanks Jeff)

  • Cure covers:
  • "www.thegetupkids.net this band has done a cover to close to me. while trying to track down an mp3 of this I noticed that none of the sites that publish the lyrics on behalf of this band don't credit The Cure or Smith as having penned the lyrics. I just started hearing it on woxy.com this morning."

    (Thanks Grump)

"New cover of The Cure by "the band" FOREVER YOUNG... It consists of rock covers singing by kids. It's a version of "Boys don't cry" with reggae music (there is also Queen / The clash / ACDC / Joan Jett / Bangles / Depeche mode) There is a 30 sec sample here ."

    (Thanks Jerome)

  • Curespotting:
  • "In the UK we have a magazine called Heat this week issues shows Posh Spice (Beckham) with a Base ball cap with The Cure and a photo of Robert on it!"

    (Thanks Vanessa and Donal)

"Robert's assertion "The nme begged me for an interview yesterday. I refused; I do not need to say yes to a magazine which has ignored us when we still needed them. " was the "phrase of the day" in today's ( thursday ) edition of the brazilian newspaper Zero Hora."

    (Thanks Antonio)

"6music's 'album of the day' for August 14th is The Cure's very own 'Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me'; http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/music/aotd.shtml Obviously the BBC are gearing up the national consciousness for the re-releases next year! Well, maybe ;-) "

    (Thanks Paz)

"Apparently nobody mentionned, the day before yesterday, late at night, I was zapping on the music channels, and on MCM (Belgium, and France I suppose) they were showing a 'reportage' about the Goth movement nowadays. They showed (with others) Siouxsie &B., with an interview of one of the members (a guy with curled blond-painted hair)... he said... they liked making conventional singles but with subliminal messages or something, but then the record company didn't let them go on with it. ... then we saw the very Gothic 'Love Cats', complemented with an interview of a blue eyed figure with dark bushy hair (but not that long) saying not being astonished when 15years later he see people looking like him, and don't minding it as it often are the most devoted fans. He also said he didn't like people thinking they know him when they do not, especially when they want him to react in a way they think he would but he actually would not... , ... those existential problems great Pop stars may have. Also after al those years, still facing the same problems... 'well even if we lose our memory, the good part of it is we're still the same good people, able to have some pleasure with life... Then they showed the frontman of NewModelArmy who claimed doing very ecclectic stuff which makes it less comercial. He said the mood of all his albums are very different. He said that on the opposite, if he just wanted to listen to something melancolic he would put 'The Cure' (I don't completely agree). They also showed PLACEBO's singer who said whe was inspired by the 50'sgroup 'The Shadows' with the song 'APACHE' when he did that last hidden track on 'I'm Nothing Without You' album. They mentioned mp3.com giving out good groups nowadays like 'PYS' and others but keeping it underground... Then they spoke about Marilyn Manson, and the pooring of Goth, people forgetting about important groups which founded the movement. They said that with Goth, people sometimes give to much attention to the look and are not focussed on the the music anymore.

I didn't see all of it, but they seemed to speak of the Goth movement in a rather large way. (the night after it was again Goth (or gore) stuff, maybe they showed more about the Cure)"

    (Thanks Tanguy)

  • The Cure are once again without a record contract, as Artist Direct is bankrupt, and The Cure have terminated their contract with them. The deal with Ross Robinson is apparently still intact, and he will remain as producer. Still too early to know how/if this will affect the release of the new album, but the band are still scheduled to start recording in the autumn.
  • (Thanks Satan...see, even Satan is a Cure fan)

  • Also, that story from the Daily Telegraph in Australia, which claimed that The Cure would record the new album in L.A. was totally wrong. The band will be recording in England once again.

  • And another correction, this time about the B-sides box set. A source close to the band says "The B-Sides info is incorrect, esp. the release date". So either Polydor had an incorrect listing on their schedule, or the info has changed since then. Let's just hope it comes out before the end of the year.

  • Trilogy will be shown on In Demand's HD (High Definition) channel on Sept. 25th at 8pm.
  • (Thanks DJ X)

  • Les Inrocks to feature 'Pornography' next week:
  • "An important message for French fans : Les Inrocks, a magazine a bit pretentious and not always very fair with The Cure but who seems since 2000 to appreciate them again, gave their cover and a long article to the fantastic album : "Nevermind". Of course, as Nirvana is the second artist I love the most, I bought it and had the very good surprise to see that next week, this part of the mag will be dedicated to PORNOGRAPHY !!

I'm trying to get information about this (hope The Cure will be on cover) and will send them a few things that had been published at the time. It would be nice if people who comes on C.O.F. could spread this message to french Cure sites very quickly."

    (Thanks David)

They have a new ad for the this and includes the ROBERT SMITH voice saying "LISTEN TO THE CURE SPECIAL". During the special they will be giving away tickets for the CURE PARTY.

As far as i know there is a very little amount of tickets available and maybe in the next few days the tickets will be run out.

But the BIGGEST new is according to the WRADIO in the CURE party ROBERT SMITH WILL RECEIVE A LIVE CALL FROM MEXICO CITY.

A few days ago i was watching MTV LATINO and the section VIDEOLOGY was playing the Moenia´s favourites (electronic music mexican band) and they picked LOVESONG video.

The plastic DVD package available in region 1 here contains the same booklet as the Australian edition, and the dvd is still on #1 of the top 10 on MIXUP recordstore."

Kaia has recorded a very quiet, acoustic guitar and voice cover of "Catch" for her 2002 Mr. Lady Records release 'Oregon.' It's quite lovely!"

Update - "I have that Amberlin CD, and there's no cover of "Love Song." They have a song called "Love Song," but its not The Cure's "Love Song." (Thanks Alex)

    (Thanks Rust)

  • (Thanks Chris)

  • So there IS a booklet in the Australian Trilogy dvd! But it looks like they got the "second printing" edition, not the tri-fold Digipak "first printing":
  • "just photographed the dvd for you ! i think it has a booklet - i only say that, as my greatest hits dvd was a cover inside the plastic case, then the dvd next to it. i could not take out the cover and read it as i can with the trilogy one. i have included a few different shots , opened etc so you can see it ok."

  • In a new interview with the Daily Telegraph in Sydney, Australia, Robert reveals more interesting info about the b-sides set, the re-issues, a possible new Cure on tv dvd, and shockingly reveals that the new cd will be recorded in Los Angeles! (Update: Not true, they will record in England)
  • You can read all of it in the resurrected Interviews section, which was long overdue in returning. I only have the most recent interviews posted so far, but will try to go back and add a few more each day or so, until they are all sorted & posted. Should make it much easier to access them, instead of going through the news archives and looking for them.

Update - "Just to let you know that the Robert Smith article you have posted on A Chain Of Flowers from Sydney's Daily Telegraph on August 7th 2003 was also published the same day in Victoria's (the state Melbourne is in) daily newspaper the Herald Sun in the weekly liftout "HIT" which is a music/entertainment section on Thursdays."

    (Thanks B)

  • You have to see this, a video for 'A Forest' done in Legos!:
  • "Apart from listening to an awful lot of the cure, I also make stop motion animation films using lego.

My most recent film was for a non-commercial non-profit lego animation competition run during the BrickFest 2003 lego convention (www.brickfest.com).

The theme for the animation competition was to make a 'music video' so being a cure fan I made a 3:38 animation to The Cure's 'A Forest'.

I thought you might be interested in seeing it, and possibly other cure fans?

You can download it from the front page of my website:

    http://www.geocities.com/nmaniatis/bricktastic/bricktastic.htm

It is an 11.80 mb 640x320 realvideo file (the free realone player plays it just fine)

I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I did making it."

    (Thanks Nick)

Update - "might want to put a note on the "Forest" legos video that it's also available in .AVI format and can be played if you have the free DivX codec - so you don't have to install the spyware-filled piece of sh*t known as the RealPlayer. :) "

    (Thanks Jason)

  • More Robert/Blink 182 talk:
  • "In the new August issue of Rolling Stone, page 54, Fall Music Preview, they talk about Blink 182 getting Robert Smith of The Cure to do the mixing on a few new tracks on their new album due out: November 11th."

Is a clash of teen cultures turning violent?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/3132291.stm

The increasing animosity between Goths and Charvers has drawn comparison with the Mods and Rockers clashes of the 1960s and late 70s.

Popular Goth culture dates back to the 1980s when bands like The Cure, Fields of the Nephilim, The Mission and Sisters of Mercy reached the height of their fame.

  • First report on the Fiat ad:
  • "The Fiat Inbetween Days ad has just aired during the Bill on ITV - it's instrumental opening of the track that's used as a couple drive around."

If anyone else wants to add on to that, please do.

    (Thanks Fat Pie)

  • More on the Blank & Jones remix of 'A Forest':
  • "I just recieved a promo copy of the Blank&Jones feat Robert Smith a forest vinyl. I like it very much. Its very atmospheric light trance track. Very dancy. Robert's vocals are very nice. Sounds much like how he sings it live. The cover of the single is very average dance single cover but 'feat Robert Smith' is written on Kiss me-font! I think this is recommended for The Cure fan!"

    (Thanks Antti)

  • The Trilogy dvd was released in Australia on Aug. 4th, and it seems to include a booklet:
  • "I thought maybe the Australian release being so late, it might have the 2nd rate packaging. I bought it today from HMV for $54.99. It has the original packaging and booklet.

The booklet is more of a tri fold brochure. On one side, in each of the three sections it has the Set, ie BF, Disint & Pornography. It says that the Digitally Remastered Album will be Av in 2004. On the inside it says what is on each disc and that Disint will be available remastered in 2004 as well. Then there are concert photos. "

Did I miss something? Since when does Trilogy include a booklet? The US release didn't have one, and I never heard from anyone about it in Europe. So does anyone else have a booklet with their dvd?

    (Thanks David)

Updates: "Yep its true the Australian dvd includes a booklet , its A4 in size which is folded in three that slips neatly into the front cover. its on semi gloss paper and consists of a large picture of Robert and a few of the other members." (Thanks curecat)

"the copy of TRILOGY I bought in a local music store, here in Brasil, has the same tri-fold like booklet that David from Australia reported in his copy. Like he said, it shows the set list for Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers, plus the ads informing about the remastered special editions of the three albums that will be out in 2004." (Thanks Julian)

"I think there must be some confusion regarding the "booklet!" I am sure the Australian person must be referring to the inner packaging that stores the 3 discs." (Thanks Kieron)

  • Some interesting news from the Total Guitar interview:
  • "It’s quite a good article. There are some other ‘goth’ mentions in the magazine, but there is some important guitar and album news in the article. I’ll try and transcribe the whole thing later. Here are two selections…

The Cure are still going strong. What can we expect from you in the future?

“Sonically, the next album’s going to be quite sparse, which is something we haven’t done since the early days. But it won’t be a complete change of direction. I fucking hate people who deny their past. That whole idea of ‘you must reinvent yourself otherwise you’re obsolete’ is so pathetic. What I attempted when I was younger, I would never dream of pretending I wasn’t that person. I looked less of a fucking idiot than bands like U2! After all I’ve done with the Cure, I don’t feel any desire to change the past at all.

    Schecter Collector

Robert Smith and the first Cure signature guitar.

“The bloke from the Schecter brand is a big Cure fan, so he keeps sending me every conceivable type of guitar. They produce a five string bass, which is a brilliant sounding instrument. In fact, that’s going to be on the new record – although I’ve also often used six string basses in the past.”

“Actually, Schecter are currently helping me to design the first ever Cure signature guitar. It’s going to be a bass and a guitar fused on one body – sort of like a modified Ultra. I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve never done an endorsement – it’ll be exciting”.

I guess Perry’s signature Aria doesn’t count then.

The rest of the article is mostly stuff we’ve all heard before. I’ll try and type out the whole thing if someone doesn’t want to beat me to it on the weekend."

    (Thanks Hazard)

  • A bit more about the Blank & Jones remix of 'A Forest':
  • "Last night i caught an interview with Piet Blank on N-Joy Radio, where he talked about how thrilled they were to get Robert to do the vocals for them, that they shot the video with him (holding a little mirror and putting on make up? -not sure about that one ;) a week ago and that they first played "a forest" in Ibiza a forthnight ago, where people cheered about it so much that it instantly became famously known as a brand new style called "GOTHIC TRANCE" ;) - and the version they played there seemed longer to the one i heard at Einslive.."

    (Thanks Nika)

  • And now, more about everyone's favorite possible Robert collaboration:
  • "There's a small article in this weeks Kerrang magazine (out today) that reads as follows:

Blink 182 have altered plans to call their forthcoming album Use Your Erection 1 and 2. "We think we might just call it Blink 182", bassist Mark Hoppus told Kerrang. "Use Your Erections 1 and 2 was never really a contender at all".

The band are currently working on a song which they hope to record with frizzy haired Cure frontman Robert Smith. "I was talking on the phone to him the other day about it, so fingers crossed", Hoppus gushes. "If it works out, it'll be a total dream come true for us to have him collaborate on a song. We're massive fans of The Cure".

The band aim to release the album in November.

As well as this, there's also a small picture of Blink 182 with a tiny Robert edited into the background. This pic has the caption: Blink don't cry: The Cure's Robert Smith joins 182."

    (Thanks Mark)

  • Robert has given his permission for 'Inbetween Days' to be used in a Fiat ad:
  • Music Week 09.08.03

    Cure tv advert.

This week marks a first for seminal British band The Cure, who have agreed for the first time for one of their classic tracks to be used in a TV advert. Their 1985 hit 'In-between Days' is to be used as the soundbed for the Fiat Punto TV campaign, which debuts in the UK this Thursday (Aug 7th). "It's a big thing for us because it's the first time Robert Smith has agreed to any of The Cure's music being used in an ad," says Universal Music director of film and TV advertising Tracie London-Rowell. Universal will re-promote the Greatest hits CD collection following the campaign."

    (Thanks Chris)

This has been confirmed by a source close to the band who adds this:

" it will be screening in the UK for 6 weeks starting 7th Aug.... Robert felt that the only way that he could get the boxset and the catalogue done was to soften his position, and agree to one advert (without voiceover) of Polydor's choice...It's a reasonably entertaining car ad, will be interesting to see what happens to Fiat Punto sales!"

  • Tricky picks The Cure for a new compilation cd. This is from NME:
  • TRICKY CHOICES!

Tricky is the latest star to put together a compilation for 'BACK TO MINE'. The trip-hopper says the compilation is, "a mixture of stuff I grew up on, and what I'm listening to now. I used to make loads of compilation tapes and I haven't had the time for years, so this has been a real pleasure." Kicking off with 'Lullaby' by The Cure, Tricky jumps from The Beat to The Buzzcocks to Kate Bush to Chet Baker. The full tracklisting is as follows:

    * The Cure - 'Lullaby'

    * Little Kings - 'How We Ride'

    * Eric B & Rakim - 'My Melody'

    * The Beat - 'Mirror In The Bathroom'

    * Doctor John - 'Loop Guru'

    * Rodagan and Tricka - 'Believe This'

    * Morphine - 'Potion'

    * The Buzzcocks - 'You Tear Me Up'

    * Le Tigre - 'Much Finer'

    * Gregory Isaacs - 'Night Nurse'

    * Kat Cross - 'Symphony For Irony'

    * Kate Bush - 'Eat The Music'

    * Constanza - 'Desire'

    * Chet Baker - 'My Funny Valentine'

    * Little Kings (feat. Shola) - 'Days Like This'

This is the 14th in the Back To Mine series, and is out on September 15

  • The Blank & Jones remix of A Forest airs on German radio:
  • "Just heard the "A Forest" Remix by "Blank & Jones feat. Robert Smith" on Einslive (German Radio station, Piet Blank has his own DJ show there called "partyservice" on sat. nights). So, has it officially come out, yet (couldn't find anything on that on their website)? It's quite... interesting, reminds me a bit of the mixed up version, very up-beat, almost like a party(service) summer hit. And i don't mind that now.. it's so hot in here ;) "

    (Thanks Nika)

And yes, it HAS been released:

"The Blank and Jones Mix 2 CD featuring Robert on A Forest has been released. It is available through their site, which actually links to amazon.de."

    (Thanks John)

Well, looks like that info was wrong:

"the blank and jones remix of 'a forest' has NOT been released yet! their new compilation only features a short 20 second snippet of the song. the booklet also features a message of blank and jones, saying that they are very pleased to work with robert and that the dvd-single will be out in september including the video and a 'making of the video'."

    (Thanks Chris)

  • Here's a bit more about the new issue of Total Guitar:
  • "Saw this in a UK newsagent yesterday. At a glance I could see that there was a 2 page interview with Robert and guitar tabs for Lullay, One Hundred Years and Out Of This World. These tracks were also on the cover-mounted CD although I expect that it is not the songs themselves but someone simply playing the guitar parts. The magazine was priced at an extortionate £4.99 so that ruled out me buying it!"

    (Thanks Ian)

  • Q says The Cure are now the "Hottest":
  • "In the current issue of Q magazine, The Cure are THE hottest thing on their regular "hot or not" thermometer."

  • Cure cover:
  • "Los Kung-Fu Monkeys (great band name!) have a cover version of "Boys Don't Cry" on their CD, 'Rebuilding the World.' Los Kung-Fu Monkeys have a punk-ska type sound, and the cover is replete with trombone, trumpet and sax, along with the usual vocals, guitar, bass and drums."

  • Seems like the second printing of the Trilogy dvd has started shipping to stores:
  • "I was in Best Buy yesterday, and they have a new shipment of Trilogy DVDs in. They are in a clear plastic case shaped like a typical dvd case, with a simple paper insert. The box & foldout packaging that came with the original release were nowhere to be found. I hope this means the Trilogy DVD is in its second printing due to selling out the first. Have you heard anything? On the other hand, it's too bad they got cheap with the packaging..."

Just in case any of you missed it, it was announced a few months back that the first printing of Trilogy would be in a custom Digipak with the fold out artwork, and after that, all subsequent printings would be in a standard 2-disc amary case. So yes, the first printing IS a limited edition of sorts and might be hard to find in a few months, if not sooner (it depends upon how many were actually printed).

    (Thanks Aaron)
