While
there's no guarantee, I think we'd all be pretty surprised
if Robert DIDN'T tun up at one or both of the London shows.
While last year's Rhino souped-up
reissue of /Three Imaginary Boys/ was essential to any
Cure fan, I'm more excited to explore the next three
records in line, deluxe editions
of Robert Smith's dark, unofficial trilogy: /Seventeen
Seconds/, /Faith/ and /Pornography/. The remastered albums
sound great and each disc comes with a bonus CD, a detailed
booklet that includes lyrics and rare photos, plus commentary
by British music journalist Johnny Black. In the 20-plus years
that have followed since the original release of these records,
Smith--along with Siouxsie Sioux--has inspired many boys and girls
to avoid sunlight, tease their unnaturally jet black hair, and
apply copious amounts of eyeliner and smeared lipstick to their
faces. Not to mention Edward Scissorhands or SNL's /Goth Talk/.
While this has certainly worked in Smith's favor--as I'm sure very
few Batcave alum are living as large as he--I'm afraid his association
with the gothic tag does a great disservice to these albums. (Mr. Smith
himself has gone on record many times disavowing this gothic categorization.)
There's nothing cartoony about these three records. If anything,
minimalism and restraint underscores the dark, brooding atmosphere--especially
of the first two. For the uninitiated, here's a quick primer.
Coming off of their spindly
British pop-punk debut, /Three Imaginary Boys/, in 1980
the Cure threw a complete curve ball with /Seventeen Seconds/.
Replacing bassist Michael Dempsey with Simon Gallup (who
would go on to play on more Cure records than any other member
besides Robert
Smith) and the addition of
a keyboardist, Smith steered his band in a sparse,
moody, atmospheric direction.
ALBUM HITS: "A Forest" and
"A Play for Today"
OTHER ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: "Secrets,"
driven by the subtle, rhythmic interplay between the
guitar and bass, and the somnambulant "In Your
House."
BONUS DISC: The 15-song bonus
CD includes unreleased studio, demo and concert tracks
(including live tracks off the /Curiosity/ cassette) recorded
between '79 and '80. Stand-out cuts include the catchy, slightly
art-damaged punk songs "I'm a Cult Hero" and "I Dig You,"
released under their Cult Hero pseudonym, previously available
only as a vinyl single.
Released in 1981, with /Faith/
the Cure sunk into deeper, albeit lush melancholy. Smith
delivers some of his most eloquent lyrics, delving into
the topics of loss and depression. That doesn't mean all the songs
move at snail pace. Most fans are familiar with the speedy, double
bass edge of "Primary" but atmospheric laments like "Funeral Parties"
emphasize the beautiful sadness found throughout the record.
ALBUM HITS: "Primary" and
"All Cats Are Grey"
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: The paranoid
"Other Voices," as well as the aforementioned "Funeral
Parties." Plus the 26-minute "Carnage Visors," a
soundtrack to the /Faith/
tour film (directed by Ric Gallup, Simon's brother),
previously available only on the original cassette version
of /Faith/.
BONUS DISC: The 15-song bonus
CD includes unreleased studio, demo and concert tracks
(including live tracks off the /Curiosity/ cassette)
recorded between '80 and
'81. Stand-out cuts include the unreleased "Drowning"
and "Going Home Time" (the latter features Smith singing a
pretty falsetto melody),
a slowed-down, echo-drenched version of "Primary"
as well as one of my all time favorite Cure songs, "Charlotte
Sometimes."
By far, the Cure's gloomiest
offering. Released in 1982, Robert Smith--who was also
moonlighting in Siouxsie and the Banshees during this time--sounds
genuinely angry in the opening track, "One Hundred Years."
With lots of tribal drumming, backwards guitars and Smith's
now fully developed wail, the Cure trade in the restrained atmosphere
of the last two albums for sludgier, effects-laden production
that emphasizes the band's desolate laments.
ALBUM HITS: "One Hundred
Years" and the nightmarish, Banshees-inspired "The
Hanging Garden"
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: The dark
post-psychedelia of "A Strange Day," which features
an incredible guitar refrain, and "Siamese Twins," a bleak
tale about the loss of virginity set amidst chiming guitars
and wrapped in a dirgey, hypnotic haze.
BONUS DISC: The 14-song bonus
CD includes unreleased studio, demo and concert tracks
(including live tracks off the /Curiosity/ cassette)
recorded between '81 and
'82. Stand-out cuts include five previously unreleased
songs plus an alternate take of "The Hanging Garden," which
is more straightforward than the album version and could have
easily been included on /Seventeen Seconds/ or /Faith/. [GH]

April 27th
Looks like there wasn't a delay
in the European release of the new deluxe editions after all:
"Just
to let you know that CD WOW have dispatched all my 3
reissues to me now, so it looks like they are all available in
the UK now, although I have not been near any record stores
to check if they are instore or available mail order only at the
moment."
(Thanks
Dave Ace)
"Just
a line to say that i have bought SS, Faith and Pornography
this morning at Fnac in France for 27,30 € each."
(Thanks
Attilio)
"The trilogy is available
here in Switzwerland (fnac) this morning despite what
was told on the official site. Amazing and Brilliant. The design
is really good and carefully done.
Pornography :
Demise and temptation are
real songs (I was expecting something difficult
to hear)
the Hanging garden studio
demo is incredibly different as the album version and
really beautifull
airlock is ..... so weird
Faith :
going home time seems so
happy regarding to "Faith" album feeling
So happy
Good job guys
(Thanks
Martin)
"17
seconds/ Faith and Pornography (Delux Edits), are out
in Spain !!
Some music shops like
EL CORTE INGLES, DISCOS REVOLVER or FNAC are selling
the new remasters with a price between 20 and 30 euros."
(Thanks
Ivan)
"the
remastered editions are out in Hamburg / Germany at
Michelle Records for EUR 24,99"
(Thanks
Lars)
"just
to let you know that the deluxe cd's are out in belgium
(at least, i bought them today at caroline music in brussels)"
"I went to Belgium
this weekend to visit my parents and tuesday, on a
shopping-trip, i found the 3 new deluxe cd's at FNAC in Antwerp!!!"
(Thanks robbertc and Owen)
Out
in Hong Kong too:
"Not
there are probably many Cure fans in Hong Kong, but
the Deluxe CDs are out over here. 'Hong Kong Records'
is has them for HK$159 (about US$20) each. There are some
absolute corkers on them."
Then I leant that Robert
and Billy Corgan were backstage, and quickly left, for
what i learnt Robert mentionned he wanted to throw some concerts
someday (which doesn't mean anything, because it can be this
year like it can be in ten years! He didn't talk about any date
at all, so stop dreaming now! LOL).
Then I met Billy Corgan
on Saturday along with other Corgan fans in Paris. I
had the opportunity to ask some questions about the title
he recorded
with robert. What I learnt
so far not very relevant but then it might have some
interest for someone?
-the title will not be released
as a single, it lasts for around 4 minutes, Robert
is not really a back vocal, Billy and Robert are rather singing
along at the same time producing a weird unique voice (a bit like
when the beatles were singing alltogether, so said Billy), Robert
won't tour with Billy, (we can still hope for a surprise at some
gigs? it's my personal wish!), Billy spent the night with Robert
for his birthday last thursday (they ended completely naked in the
hotel, so said Billy, but i suppose it was just to laugh at me because
I kept harrassing him about Robert), Billy's album is completely recorded.
"Special
Ops Media is offering three posters (I know, no CD
this time, I couldn't help it). The details to win are inside
my Cure section, you
have to answer three questions.
Just like last time, the prizes can be shipped only
within the US, so non-US fans have no chance to win.
My site's url again is :

'A Forest' is #3 in Belgium:
"Just
wanted to let you know A forest finished in third place
in a famous Belgian eighties top 100, right behind Summer
of 69 from Bryan Adams on
first and With or without
you from U2 on second !!"

Here you can find a cover
of "Just Like Heaven" by Gatsby's American Dream.
I actually rather like it. It remains faithful to
the original while still infusing their own style into it.
One of the more worthy covers in my opinion."

"For
those who don't konw (which is probably everyone),
an excellent band that goes by the name of Shamrain has contributed
their cover of "Charlotte Sometimes" to an upcoming cure
tribute album entitled "Our Voices." While the cover doesn't
sound much like their band or even their lead singer... the
band Shamrain itself is hugely influenced/similar to the cure
and in my opinion a great band. If you're a fan of the cure then
you definitely need to check out the band. Their site: www.shamrain.net "
(Thanks
Furrever)
"I
was looking up some stuff online one day when i came
across a local band from my area located in saginaw michigan.
The band is called The
Banana Convention, and they
use 10:15 by the cure as the opening song to one of
their pod casts called "The Electric Fez". Link this becuase
they play alot of really
cool music too like Bowie, Interpol, Sleater Kinney.

"On
Australia's Triple J Radio Station this morning, Jay
and The Dr had a quiz - "Is this a line from a Cure song
or from the maiden speech of the
Shadow Minister for Health"
- I didn't actually hear the show, but a friend tells
me that the first line was a Cure song, and the contestant
got it
wrong."

April 22nd
While the new deluxe editions
of SS/Faith/Porno are officially delayed until May
2nd in Europe, some were found today in Italy.

Billy Corgan talks about his
collaboration with Robert:
"From an interview
about his album:
The original song by the
Bee Gees is in a major key and very up-sounding, and
I knew it wouldn't fit that way. So I slipped it all into a
minor key, so it's the same melody but sadder. We finished
the demo and my engineer thought it was one of the best things
we've ever done -- and that was just the demo. So I'm pretty good
friends with Robert Smith from the Cure who were a big influence
on me. We're not just rock buddies, we sort of have a loving relationship
from afar. So I called Robert up and said, "Will you sing on my
record?" He said, "Sure, whatever you want." I said, "It's a Bee
Gees song." Over the Transatlantic line I hear Robert Smith going
"The Bee Gees?" I said, "Trust me, just do your thing and it will be
fine." He did and it was great.
And for the ones who kept insisting
that The Cure were playing Lollapalooza, here's the confirmed
list of bands. Time to hitch your horse to a
different rumor. : )
So, how did Robert celebrate
yesterday? By doing what every sensible person
in Paris did - he went to see Interpol:
"Robert smith was last night in Paris
Zenith for INTERPOL concert. i saw him backstage with Billy
Corgan. he left zenith quickly in a limousine."
(Thanks Years go by)
Win an autographed guitar:
"Our web site is holding a give-away
for a guitar autographed by the members of The Cure and
we're trying to get as many true fans to enter as possible
so that a true fan might win it, and not someone who just
plans to turn around and sell it on E-bay or another auction.
If you are interested
- you do not have to buy anything, no purchase necessary
at all - but we encourage you to enter and pass this along
to any real fans of The Cure.

The Glove's 'Blue Sunshine'
to be the next Cure deluxe cd?
From the Steve Severin Forum (April 14th 2005) :
"Biggest and best
news of the week is that after many, many years I have
started talking to Robert Smith about the GLOVE re-mastering.
We had a
lovely, long catch-up
chat on the phone on Saturday and I'm overjoyed to
say that Robert is going to be totally involved in getting
the best possible release together. I have suggested that BLUE
SUNSHINE falls into the CURE's timeline of reissues as opposed
to the BANSHEES and Robert is really happy about that plan. In
plain terms as FAITH/17 SECONDS/PORNOGRAPHY are due out at the
end of this month - BLUE SUNSHINE
is next!!!!! In the
Banshees timeline it would be probably a year away
so I'm very excited that we will have the album out in the
next 6 months. Robert is currently ploughing through his tapes
and between us we think we have enough interesting stuff to
make BLUE SUNSHINE a double disc deluxe edition. Universal
are up for it too.
We plan to meet up
soon over a flagon of cider and go through everything
including all the bits of memorabilia that I have kept
that will be nice to incorporate into the new artwork. It's
going to be a blast! Can't wait......"
Amazon (UK) is indicating that
the new deluxe cds have been pushed back a week to May 2nd, but other stores
still have it listed for April 25th.
Update:
The official site confirms that the cds have been
pushed back to May 2nd in the UK and Europe. US release is
still April 26th.

Radio@AOL and Radio@Netscape
are playing the new deluxe cds:

does not
require a membership."

"My name is Benoit and I'd like to organize
a big Curefan meeting in France. It would happen in Angers
or nearby. Here is my announce in french and its english
translation.
" J'envisage d'organiser
une soirée (ou un week-end) Cure. Le but
On a dejà repéré
un lieu sympa où cela pourrait se
passer.
pas à me contacter à rassemblecuristes@yahoo.fr
pour qu'on en discute. Merci beaucoup ! "
" I'm about to organize
a Cure night (or Cure week-end). The idea is to gather
all fans interested by The Cure, for everyone to know
better each
other, to talk, to
listen and play music... Cure music !
I want to do it in
country, around Angers (Maine et Loire), to be quiet.
We still found a nice place where it could happen. We could
build a little scene in order to play covers, a sound... and
many other ideas you'll think about and which could be nice
for a night like this.
So, if you're interested,
if you're musicians or not, don't hesitate to contact
me at rassemblecuristes@yahoo.fr
to talk about it. Thank you very much!"
(Thanks Benoit)
Curespotting:
"I was watching VH1 last night, and
a commercial came on something like this:
Black background,
white lettering flashing sentence at a time while
playing pictures of you:
"remembering you standing
quiet in the rain"
"as I ran to your
heart to be near"
"pictures of you"
"the Cure"
"megaartists"
Then a logo for Virgin
megastore"
(Thanks Debi) "Check out
NME's Poster special with a Robert picture from 1993
from Steve Double;he writes
"I think it's the
the classic shot of Robert Smith to be honest. It's
the essence of the man-the hair and the lipstick, the black
and the red-that's what jumps out at you.The shoot wasn't
done in the studio but some Elizabethan manor house they
were using as a studio.Robert's always been interested in
the music press.I remember he always liked to look through the
shots. He'd heap praise on the ones he liked"
(Thanks JC)
All the usual suspects
haunt the margins of the New York band's thumpy dance
grooves and whizzing synth riffs. Those include singer-guitarist
Sam Endicott's pleading, barbed vocals, which split the
difference between the howl and the whine of the Cure's Robert
Smith and Duran Duran's Simon LeBon."
Coming off like a
cross between the Cure's Robert Smith and the Strokes'
Julian Casablancas, Endicott gets off some clever turns
of phrase. "I'm stingy with words / All binge, no purge," he
squeals on the bouncy "Public Service Announcement."
(Thanks Tempest)
"Interview with Brandon Flowers of The
Killers in Rolling Stone:
He says in one of
his answers "There's a kid who lives down the street
from me; he's about fourteen. That's the age when I started
getting into the good stuff, so I bought him The Cure's
The Head on the Door and the Cars' Greatest Hits."
Just another example
of how The Cure has molded our music history and influenced
our newest artists."
(Thanks Diane)
"Here's a weird one, look at this Cure
reference in a review of Lisa Marie Presley's latest album:
"Some of the cuts,
like the standout "I'll Figure it Out," indicate Presley
spent a lot of time with Cure records in the 1980s."
Who knows who the
Cure has influenced over the years?"
(Thanks Sandra) "Looks like
everyone is coming out of the closet. Here's
a review of the Canadian band Hot Hot Heat:
"Make Up the Breakdown
(2002), the band's first full-length album, seemed
directly inspired by their babysitters' record collections:
The Cure, XTC, Elvis Costello -- taut, punchy early eighties
pop, most of which hit the radio long before they could walk.
(The HHH members are all in their mid-20s.)
The songs may not
cut deep, but they've got smarts and snap, and seem
to take real pleasure in fiddling with a familiar three-minute
formula. The
hits, Talk to Me,
Dance with Me and Bandages, bounce from one delicious
hook to the next and will surely resonate for a long
time.
Elevator, however,
banishes some of the Cure-like confessions, putting
the catchy before the clever, the self-assured before the
self-flagellating."
(Thanks Sandra)
"yesterday,at polish
television (public television tvp 1,programme called
teleexpres) they have mentioned about robert smith's 46th
birthday."

commentary and notes by U.K. music scribe Johnny Black.
A year after their
debut, The Cure returned in 1980 with a more experimental
sound on SEVENTEEN SECONDS, which includes the band's
first U.K. hit single, "A Forest." The 15-song bonus disc features
music available on CD for the first time including previously
unreleased studio and home demo versions, live performances
from 1979-1980 as well as "I'm a Cult Hero" and "I Dig You,"
originally released by The Cure under the pseudonym Cult Hero.
The minimalism of
SEVENTEEN SECONDS gave way to lush arrangements on
1981's FAITH, which features the U.K. hit "Primary" as well
as "The Holy Hour" and "All Cats Are Grey." The Rhino reissue
offers the original, eight-song album on the first disc,
along with "Carnage Visors," originally the B-side for the
cassette version of Faith, on CD for the first time. The 15-song
bonus disc includes four previously unreleased songs, studio
and home demo versions, as well as live performances from
1980-1981.
The Cure's third
album in as many years, PORNOGRAPHY, was the band's
darkest work to date. It became a Top 10 hit in the U.K.
and went on to become an essential album in the Goth rock canon
thanks to songs like "One Hundred Years" and "The Hanging Garden."
The 14-song bonus disc features music available on CD for
the first time including five previously unreleased songs, previously
unreleased studio and home demo versions as well as live performances
from 1981-1982.
It's been almost
three decades since a 17-year-old Smith formed The
Cure in Crawley, England. The band has forged an ongoing
career highlighted by an astonishing run of artistic
and commercial successes, including chart-topping hit singles,
gold and platinum records, countless awards, critical acclaim,
and an international fan base that follows the band with religious
fervor. They have secured their place in music history by shaping
modern rock as we know it today.

Rhino has a listening
party for the 3 albums here
(as I post this, it currently links to a Brandy
album, but it will be corrected soon).
Entertainment Weekly has graded
the new deluxe cds:
"In the latest issue of Entertainment
Weekly (#815 April 15, 2005) , 17 seconds, Faith and Pornography
have a write up. Here it is:
This moody triptych
was the soundtrack to many a depressed teen's adolescence,
making it okay for boys to cry (and get their mascara
smudged ,too.) Seventeen (1980) and Faith (1981) offer shards
of hope, but for real despondent wallow, slip on 1982' Pornography.
For those of you who don't
have iTunes, here are Robert's comments for his
playlist:
Are You Experienced? - The Jimi Hendrix
Experience -"Music from another world -when i first
heard this it made me want to play guitar and sing
all night-it still
does."
Time Has Told Me
- Nick Drake - "The most heartbreaking sound -and
maybe where we got the name from."
The Heart of Saturday
Night - Tom Waits -"Perfect melancholia -poignant
,evocative, heartfelt."
Tea and Sympathy
- Janis Ian - "Another one of the saddest songs I've
ever heard."
Don't Believe a Word
(Studio Version) - Thin Lizzy- "Melodic and powerful-
the grooviest rock band I ever saw."
White Riot - The
Clash- "And then this happend and everything changed-
a riot of my own..."
Into You Like a Train
- The Physcidelic Furs - "The Furs were such a great
mix of style and subtance...of styles and substances.
Lorelei - Cocteau
Twins -"Breathtaking."
Monkey Gone to Heaven
- Pixies- "Falling upwards..."
I Only Said - My
Bloody Valentine- "The music playing at the end of
the world."
Heart-Shaped Box
- Nirvana -"Raw,passionate,heartbreaking Kurt."
Alright - Supergrass-
"So insanley happy it makes me cry!"
NYC - Interpol-"Twilight
memories..."
Girl's Not Grey -
A.F.I.- "Dark,seductive, romantic. . ."

The Polyphonic Spree
- The Cure,Catch
The Killers- The
Cure,Push "This song made me want to start a
band. when i was 14, i recruited this 34 year old firefighter
who said he played bass, to learn this song with me.
drum and bass never sounded so sweet
Blink 182 - The Cure,Push
-"This is the raddest song by one of my favorite bands
of all time. I love the guitar in the beginning of the
song.
Talking about Curiosa,
New Order ask if The Cure had mentioned them as
an inspiration, because "these bastards" [Cure] copied them
[N-O] from
head to toe as N-O
member Hook states.
"I doubt that The
Cure had an influence on the Curiosa band selection.
I imagine them [Cure] saying [impersonating Robert I guess]
Ohhh yeah? Are they
any good? No, haven´t heard of them. New Order?
Yes, they are good."
Yeah, they're bastards, but their new
album is great. 'Waiting For The Sirens' Call' is out
now in Europe and will be released on April 26th in North
America.
(Thanks Eraserhead)
Robert birthday party (a few
days late) in Bellingham, Wa. :
"I was out and about last night when
I came across a flyer for a Robert Smith birthday celebration.
It will be on April 24 at the 3B Tavern in
Bellingham,WA. It
starts at 9:00 pm and goes until closing time. There
is no cover charge. I hope to see all you local Cure fans
that night. It should be a blast!"
(Thanks Bmh1127)
April 7th
As a follow up to the start
of the summer festival rumors, several sources
have indicated that there is virtually no chance of
The Cure playing any shows this year.
April 6th
It wouldn't be spring without
rumors of Cure festival shows. Here's the first:
"Pinkpop organizer waits for a conformation
from the cure for Pinkpop; a fesitval in the netherlands.

Cure! (het is dus nog niet zeker ofdat
zij op Pinkpop
zullen spelen).
Andere bands die
zeker zullen komen zijn o.a. Sick Of It All, Saybia
en The Prodigy.

Curedrink update:
"There seems
to an overwhelming response from people for this year's
event! I must stress that it is a good idea for people
to arrive early! There
is a large pub
downstairs from the venue so people can meet up there.
However, being present in the pub DOES NOT guarantee you
entry to the
club to the Curedrink.
Doors to the club will open at 19h30. http://www.intrepid-blue.com/curedrink"
AHHHHH!!!! Just like Freddy,
Jason and Michael, you think it's dead, but
no, it's back to torture you again:
"There
is a new compilation CD that came out on March 22nd
called "Best of Dance Rock, Vol One," which includes "Da
Hype" by Junior Jack
featuring Robert
Smith."
In the gallery,
the very last 'star' icon on the bottom row is linked
to a picture of a Cure performance, and the caption reads:
"The Cure hired Canadian director Floria Sigismondi to
create their video The End Of The World. It's one of this
year's nominees for Video of the Year."
(Thanks Little Jen)
"For those of you who are thinking
between XM and Sirius radio. Channel 22 "First Wave"
on Sirius they have RICHARD BLADE from the KROQ days from
9-12 pacific time M-F, Freddie Snakeskin (I think from old
KISS) and then Sweedish Eagle and Fred Snyder from the B-52s
doing his "party out of bounds" show...and the channel has been
playing a lot of cure songs. Its almost like the good o'
days from KROQ and 91X.
(Thanks bryon1)
"From April 2005 SPIN magazine (INTERPOL
ON THE COVER)
IN INTERPOL ARTICLE....
If, by some improbably
twist of fate, you ever get the chance to join
Interpol, it might seriously be worth considering.
The hours may be a bit harsh -- it's a reverse 9 to 5, not
including band meetings and tailor appointments -- but there's
probably no better gig going at the moment: The wine is
free and free-flowing, the girlfriends are beautiful, and there's
a good chance Robert Smith will play poker with you in the back
of your tour bus (he'll win, but it's only a $20 buy-in)...."
(Thanks 100 Years)
"Tonight on countdown with Keith Olberman
I heard "Close to Me" on their sound bites of the day
segment. This is the second time I've heard it on the show."

and Tempest)

The brilliance
is in how far Rollins is willing to go in poking fun
at himself. The audience is treated to a word portrait
of Rollins in full military/Buddhist/samurai-style training
to finally match Iggy's stagemanship at a Finland rock
festival in 1998. The bill? The Cure ("Pretty good songwriter,"
Rollins says of front man Robert Smith, "but what's up with
his whole pose, and that hair? How did he pick that?") backed by
Iggy Pop and Rollins Band. Rollins lets us see and enjoy how much of
a maniac he became in the pursuit of his goal, how others around him
were amused or appalled (his own backing band, "real musicians,"
thought he was an "asshole," Rollins tells us)."
