April 30th

  • I just posted some photos of the fans waiting in line for the Tonight Show.
  • (Thanks Espie)

  • Cure to appear on Pepsi Smash:

  • "A few minutes ago I saw a promo on the WB network saying The Cure would be on the "Pepsi Smash" show, which starts on May 27. Didn't say whaat actual date they would be on."

Info about the tapings and tickets can be found here. No idea which taping the Cure will be doing, but the May 25th one makes the most sense, as they will already be in the US for HFStival. I'll let you know as soon as I can.

    (Thanks Justin)

  • A couple of things I need help with for tonight:

  • 1. Anybody planning on videotaping the Rock Walk induction tonight? If so, any chance you could send in a mpg/avi/mov/rm file? Photos would be nice too.

    2. Can anyone provide a good quality video file and an mp3 of the Tonight Show performance?

    3. Can anyone provide a mirror site for the Tonight Show files? I imagine there will be thousands of fans in Europe, South America, Australia, etc. who are going to want to see it as soon as possible, and the COF server is hard to get into on a normal day.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out.

Update: Thanks so much to everyone who wrote in. We've got the audio/video of the Tonight Show taken care of, and I think we have enough mirror sites to handle the demand. And yes, I would love to have any and all stories, photos, videos, etc. from those of you who get into the Tonight Show or who go to the Rock Walk induction. I'll be up all night, so send them whenever you can. Thanks!

  • Robert will be doing an interview on KROQ 106.7 in Los Angeles on Monday morning. Should be sometime between 7-10 am.

  • (Thanks Alyse)

  • Looks like you can add another band to "Curefest":

  • "Yesterday a band called Muse played a show in Salt Lake City, Utah. While they were here they did an interview with a local radio station X96. They talked about their touring this year and mentioned that they were contacted to play with The Cure in North America. They said that they're not sure when or where yet, though."

    (Thanks Peter)

  • The Cooper Temple Clause will be The Cure's special guest for the Loreley show.

  • (Thanks Marco)

  • And the guests for Aix les Bains show:

  • "Please note that The cure will be playing the 4th July in Aix les Bains (France) for the festival musilac with two french groups : Overhead and As Dragon. Overhead provide a mix music composed with pop, jazz and electro. As Dragon is a famous group that play pop rock songs with their mythic androgynous singer Natasha. "

  • 'Join the Dots' is still in the Greek charts:

  • "Since our greek friend didn't tell you, i assume the "duty" to inform you that JOin the dots is still in the top 50 in Greece! After the last update (which was from two weeks ago when it was at 18), it went down to 39 and then to 42, but still resists! By far the best chart of all the other Dots ones !"

    (Thanks Pietro)

  • Anybody have the answer to this one?

  • "I would like to know what kind of drum machine was used for "Carnage Visors" & "One Hundred Years". I'm sure it is the same as the one on New Order's "Movement" & Echo/Bunnymen's "Heaven Up Here". I have searhed all over the web for this info, but can not find it. I figured with so many Cure/New Order/Bunnymen fans on here, someone is bound to know."

    (Thanks Ian)

Update: "I checked with Dave at Worldinmotion.net and New Order used a DR - 55 on Movement. Hope this helps" (Thanks Eric)

"I think it's a Boss DR - not sure of the model # back then... " (Thanks Michelle)

  • Curespotting:

  • "On the spotting of "other voices" on CNN Headline news...I also heard some Cure songs on Headline News, but much earlier....actually i heard 2 songs within about 10 minutes of each other. First they played the intro of "A Forest" and later they played "play for today". "Play for today" was played over an ENTIRE news segment. It was all instrumental and it was kind of distracting (to non Cure fans) because at times you could barely hear what the news casters were talking about. On a side note...it might have been "Other Voices" instead of "play for today" because I was half awake and very groggy."

    (Thanks Roger)

  • Billboard reveals everything we needed to know:

  • 'The End' In Sight For The Cure

The Cure's first album in four years will be a self-titled affair, frontman Robert Smith announced last night (April 28) in New York at the first playback of the upcoming release. "The Cure" will arrive June 29 on producer Ross Robinson's I Am imprint via Geffen. The group will perform first single "The End of the World" tomorrow on NBC's "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and headline the Coachella festival on Sunday in Indio, Calif.

"I think it's the best thing we've ever done," Smith said proudly. "The album is called 'The Cure.' If you don't like it, then you don't like us." Smith stood silently in the corner of the room by himself while the 14-track album was played for about 40 journalists and guests, occasionally taking notes in preparation for approving the final mix and running order.

The album kicks off with the slow, discordant "Lost," featuring the first of many impassioned vocal performances from Smith. A throbbing bass groove powers the tentatively titled "Labyrinths," with Smith wailing, "It's not the same / it never was like this / everything has to change."

The classic Cure sound is evident on such tracks as "Before 3," "Taking Off" and "I Don't Know What's Going On," which sport great melodies and foot-tapping tempos. The 12th track, the tentatively titled "Jason #3" provides the album with a late shot of energy thanks to a clever, melodically ascending chorus.

But the album has its share of dark and intense material, particularly the epic penultimate track "The Promise," which runs past 10 minutes and climaxes in feedback and noise. "Us or Them" matches its confrontational title with an emphatic chorus ("I don't want you anywhere near me"), while "Going Nowhere" wraps things up with sad, dreamy production accented by piano.

"There was a moment where we had to decide whether to do some conceptual experiment with nothing over 100 [beats-per-minute], and all of us with our heads down making a heavy, heavy album, but it wouldn't be as good," Smith said. "The best Cure albums have a balance."

Smith revealed that former guitarist Porl Thompson, who left the Cure in 1993, recorded parts for a couple of tracks. At Robinson's urging, basic tracks were recorded live, yet another throwback to an earlier time.

"Ross wanted to record us as a band, which we really hadn't done since the second album we ever made," Smith said. "The days would build up into these intense periods until we'd get the song. Everything was played live and I had to sing live."

Smith held back on giving details of the band's summer tour, which is rumored to feature such Cure-inspired new acts as Interpol, the Rapture and Mogwai, but promised, "You'll enjoy the whole thing because it was put together by us."

Here is the tentative track list for "The Cure":

    "Lost"
    "Labyrinths" (working title)
    "Before 3" (working title)
    "Truth Goodness and Beauty"
    "The End of the World"
    "I Don't Know What's Going On"
    "Taking Off"
    "Anniversary"
    "This Morning"
    "Us or Them"
    "Precious Advise" (working title)
    "Jason #3" (working title)
    "The Promise"
    "Going Nowhere"

  • More talk of the new album being called The Cure:

  • "regarding the title of the new album, a few days ago somebody posted this in the TALKBACK section of the I am Recordings website answering to the many requests about the title of the new album...

    4/22/2004

    ross

TITLE: THE CURE NOT SURE THOUGH, I DONT KNOW YET

... so if the message is originally from Ross, this would confirm the self-titled album theory"

    (Thanks Davide)

"My local paper had a blurb about the leno show and upcoming album...basically it said that it was indeed a self titled album....look under album news. but at least it's some confirmation."

Hmm, or maybe that just meant that no title had been given yet.

    (Thanks James)

  • Cure cover:

  • "I don't know if it's been notified before, but a french duet called Nouvelle Vague (meaning 'new wave') and with a female singer singing in english has recorded an album of covers from various new wave & punk bands that inspired them in their youth and to create a music group; The original thing is that they play bossa nova style. They cover of 'just can't get enough' from DM is really nice and catchy, I heard also a PIL cover which was good, and I've heard that they also cover The Smiths (as well as The Clash, Joy Division, and Nick Drake I believe, but not sure), and obiously, THE CURE. Oh, here's the list:

    1. Love Will Tear Us Apart
    2. Just Can't Get Enough
    3. In A Manner Of Speaking
    4. Guns Of Brixton
    5. This Is Not A Love Song
    6. Too Drunk To Fuck
    7. Marian
    8. Making Plans For Nigel
    9. A Forest
    10. I Melt With You
    11. Teenage Kicks
    12. Psyche
    13. Friday Night Saturday Morning

But but but ... • Curespotting:

  • "Here's a wonderful little gem of an atricle I came across recently on the Mrs Shankly website, which is dedicated to Morrissey. As you'll already know, it originated from the New York Post, April 13 2004. I know that you featured some of the text before, but here's the full, fun-packed article scanned with pics. All good clean fun ;-) http://members.aol.com/nico55555/nypostfull.jpg"

  • Not really Cure related, but one of the Pink Pig contributors has a new cd coming out:

  • "I was part of the part of the Pink Pig project- I contributed covers of “Heroin Face” and “Descent”. Anyway, I was wondering if you could mention the release of my new band’s album. The band is called honeypower and the biggest influences are The Cure, The Wedding Present and the Jesus & Mary Chain. The album is called “Deflowered” and is being released on my indie label Push Productions (yes, as in The Head on the Door’s blissful track). I think Cure fans will be into the album, especially tracks like “Down in The Valley” and “Oh Kumiko”. http://www.honeypower.com"

    (Thanks Gavin)

    April 28th

  • The Tonight Show website says the new album is self-titled (The Cure). I'm checking on it, but if true, it would explain why none of my spies could find a title for it. : )

  • (Thanks Van)

  • Another date for "Curefest" - Aug. 1st in Holmdel, N.J. at the PNC Bank Arts Center. The best thing about this listing is the ticket prices. Only $30-60! Show starts at 5pm. Check out the listing at Ticketmaster.

  • Update: TM has removed the listing from their site. But don't worry, it hasn't been canceled. they just weren't supposed to list it yet.

A new temporary poll is up, while we wait to hear 'The End of the World'. Yes, I know it's stupid, you don't need to e-mail and tell me. It will only be up for 2 days at most, so just have fun with it. And yes, there really is a restaurant and a club called The End of The World. There's a pub too, but I forgot to put that one in the poll. : )

    April 27th

  • Another article about the new album. This one says there will be 14 tracks on it.

  • (Thanks Steve)

  • The Cure make it onto The 33 Most Important Moments in Music list:

  • 17. ROBERT SMITH assembles THE CURE, proceeds to release about twenty albums (of which one—Disintegration—is the second-best album ever.ever.ever.), becomes God to roughly 48% of everyone born between 1965 and 1990, and nonchalantly releases Bloodflowers, one of the band's finest albums, when in danger of having to keep his teeth in a jar

    18. Thirty seconds have passed since #17, and……… yes—ROBERT is still God

    19. Steven Patrick MORRISSEY fronts THE SMITHS, challenges ROBERT's title as God; they agree to share, until one turns into a tedious solo act and the other continues, well… being God

    33. ELLIOTT SMITH kills himself; NICK, JEFF, and now this; spiritual life takes vacation, gets drunk, finds God again in the form of ROBERT SMITH and 'To Wish Impossible Things'

Expect to see Reuben Ham added to "Curefest" tomorrow. : )

    (Thanks Jan)

  • Cure cover:

  • "I thought Cure fans might like to know that Apoptygma Berzserk (a Norway future-pop band, similar to VNV Nation) are due to release their Unicorn EP & Harmonizer DVD package on 1 June. The EP contains a cover of A Strange Day. Should be interesting."

  • Curespotting:

  • "Tonight's episode of "One Tree Hill" on the WB featured the song "Apart". Also, "Fascination Street" was on one character's list of CDs that had been borrowed from her..."

    (Thanks angelgrl)

"I went to a German film festival on the weekend and saw the German film, "Play it Loud." In one scene the main character is over at a new love-interests house and she tells him to put a record on. He flips through her records in disgust at how bad her collection is until he comes across Boys Don't Cry and is so happy that he's found such a treasure amongst such trash.

In a later scene A Forest is playing in the background while he's over at his friends house."

    (Thanks Lisa)

"Was bored this past Sunday afternoon and decided to flip through some channels. Got to one as they were going to commercial break and I heard the strains of "Lullaby". Stuck around for the second break and they headed into "Friday I'm in Love". Strangely enough, it was the PGA Senior Golf tournament. Now I know Robert recently celebrated a birthday....but really.....Senior Golf? Would love to know how many viewers actually recognized the tunes!"

    (Thanks Foilball)

"Last night, there was a 2 hour block of The Cure on WRAS, Ga. State's radio station. I only caught the end, so I don't know what all was played.

Collector's Choice Music (CCM.com) has finally picked up JTD in this months catelogue. They also have a pic of Robert in the top corner of the page, and underneath it the caption reads"Tired of radio rock? We have The Cure!"

    (Thanks ALClovis)

"I've got three curespottings: the first two are minor ones, they're just two mentions the Cure got in two italian newspapers: one was about them headlining the Jammin Festival together with Ben Harper, the other about the new album release date, also saying the new single will be out april 30th. the third one is in a review of a new record by the italian magazine "Musica!" , 22-4 issue : the album "Laced with romance" by Ponys is said to be a "new wave comeback", with strong influences from the period 77-82, and the allucinated voice of Robert clearly audible in the singer. Below it there are two "similar records", and one of them is Three imaginary Boys."

    (Thanks Pietro)

"There was an interview with Tish Ciravolo, the president of Daisy Rock Girl Guitars, in this Sunday's LA Times Magazine and it contained the ubiquitous Robert Smith name drop."

    (Thanks Apart)

  • The official site has been updated with confirmation of a one hour set at HFStival, and announcing a new German festival date - June 25th in St. Goarshausen at the Loreley Festival. This is the show that was listed as Dusseldorf on the Universal list I posted a few days ago.

  • Another story about the new album:

    New Cure Album

Robert Smith is moving about again. New original album from The Cure ready for release in June

The usually mute, pale and black clad Robert Smith has through the later years also shown himself to possess such qualities as happiness with life, humor and self irony, which Gaffa’s own journalist, Signe Glahn, experienced face to face with Robert Smith. The Cure does is not longer fixed in the universal pop calendar as in the 80’s, but Smith & Co. still has dedicated fans all over the world, who enjoy the black maestro’s continuing creativity.

In fact, The Cure will be releasing a brand new studio album on Universal/Geffen at the end of June and will be performing, so far, at about 10 festivals in the USA and Europe this summer. Til now Midtfyn (Denmark), Roskilde (Denmark) and Hultsfred (Sweden) have not been announced as venues. But it seems there are still a few open dates, so who knows?

    (Thanks Christoffer)

  • Cure party in Washington, D.C. :

  • "This will take place at the Blackcat (mainstage) in Washington DC on SAT MAY 1

  • Curespotting:

  • "There's a bit on Billboard.com about 311 making it to #1 on the chart with their cover of "Lovesong":

HIGHER 'LOVE': 311's update of the Cure's "Love Song" (Maverick/Volcano) has become the highest-charting version of the song on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. Featured on the soundtrack to the film "50 First Dates," the 311 remake moves 3-1 on the Modern tally. That beats the No. 2 peak of the Cure original in August 1989."

But The Cure went to #2 on the Hot 100 Singles chart, while 311 are only #1 on the Modern Rock chart. Huge difference, so advantage The Cure.

    (Thanks Sébastien)

"A small review of thcure.com from the free mag Spike 40:

The Cure, pioneers of the Goth rock, also inaugurate a new album for 2004. Differently from the mentioned ones (The White Stripes), they have never been broken up as band though many of their members have developed parallel projects. www.thecure.com offers us the possibility of knowing about the likes and tastes of the members of the band; Programs, films, musicians, and favorite places of the enigmatic Robert Smith."

(Thanks to Sharon from Charlotte Sometimes)

"So my roommate watches that Video Game channel G4 and they had on this horrible show called "Players" about celebrity video game players. (Tell me truthfully, WHY should anyone care?) Anyway, Tweaker was on the show and they mention of course that Robert Smith guested on their album."

    (Thanks Andrew)

"Being pretty impressed by A Perfect Circle's first album, i went looking for some reviews on the internet, and as i ended up at www.cduniverse.com, i read an excerpt of a Rolling Stone review of the album, that stated: "Rolling Stone (1/4/01, p.114) - Included in Rolling Stone's "Top 50 Albums of 2000" - "...A positively ancient metal, a gothic throb that leapfrogs over rap metal back to the sleek PORNOGRAPHY-era dolor of the Cure and psychedlic-Valhalla songs of Led Zep....refreshing darkness." ... mmm... Ok, the album is really good and incredibly well produced/mixed, but really, Pornography still is miles ahead ( or maybe i just say that 'cause i'm a Cure fan... )."

  • The second stop on "Curefest" has been confirmed - July 25th in Tampa, Florida. While the venue hasn't been confirmed yet, it seems like it would be the brand new Tampa Bay Amphitheatre. If that turns out to be accurate, The Cure would be one of the first bands to play there, possibly the first.

  • New 'Dots' review, focusing on Simon:

  • "From June/July issue of Guitar World's Bass Guitar Magazine (Duff McKagan of GnR cover):

    Low Gothic Style

Revisiting proto-goth greats the Cure and Echo & the Bunnymen

Singer Robert Smith of the Cure with his messy black hair, eyeliner and smeared lipstick, has always been the public face of goth rock. But it was Cure bassist Simon Gallup (with drummers Lol Tolhurst, Andy Anderson and Boris Williams) who truly anchored the band. Gallup’s trademark flangy bass tones and droning lines—similar to his contemporiraries, like Joy Division’s Peter Hook and Siouxsie & the Banshee’s Steve Severin—meshed beautifully with Smith and with Porl Thompson’s chimey baritone guitar parts, producing one of the most distinctive guitar/bass dialogues in the post punk era. Rhino’s new Cure retrospective, Join The Dots: Rarities & B-Sides, embraces rare cuts from the band’s entire long career, which means that sparse, ultraraw early tracks like 1978’s 10:15 Saturday Night” and 1981’s two-bass instrumental “Descent” coexist with lush, subdriven masterpieces like 1992’s “This Twilight Garden” and 1998’s techno-tinged “More Than This”. The band’ s trademark rhythms—often either head-nodding half-time pulses or herky-jerky 16th note hi-hat pulses—generally find Gallup locked into the kick drum but not tied to it; his smeary tones are perfect for the band’s dirgy material, but he tightens it up for the dance-able goth-disco grooves of track like “To The Sky”.

Nice feature and great Faith-era live photo (sorry no scanner). Finally some music-oriented recognition for Simon's outstanding longterm contributions."

  • Cure cover:

  • "The Austrian four-piece band "Heinz" covered The Cure’s "Inbetween days" on their record "Live in Mexico" (released 2003) which was recorded during their Karate Tour 2002 (actually not in Mexico but somewhere in Europe). The song is a bonus track (2.48) and as much as I can hear not live performed.

You can find the CD on amazon.de

Heinz’s sound is sort of melancholically Britpop but usually sung in German language.

Though I like Heinz quite much, I´ve heared better versions of "Inbetween days" to be honest. "

  • Here's the RockWalk press release:

  • NEWS & PHOTO TIP FOR FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 2004:

LEGENDARY ROCK BAND, THE CURE, WIDELY RENOWNED AS THE ARCHITECT OF MODERN ROCK, TO BE INDUCTED INTO HOLLYWOOD'S ROCKWALK

WHO: Internationally renowned for their distinctive style and highly original ethereal sounds, THE CURE is one of the most consistent and influential bands of all time. In a career spanning more than 25 years, and with record sales exceeding 28 million worldwide, the band has firmly established itself as a definitive force in shaping modern rock as we know it today. Alternative before the alternative genre even existed, and unconfined by trends, the band achieved a number of hit singles and albums with their distinct compositions that continue to stand the test of time. Formed in 1976 by frontman Robert Smith, whose trademark voice and penchant for creating and exploring haunting pop sounds, and unique emotional places, guided the legendary band to sold-out international stadium tours and ongoing acclaim. The Cure's popular 1985 release The Head On The Door, featuring the vibrant hit single "Inbetween Days," and followed by "Close To Me," became the first Cure album to break into the U.S. Top 50. The 1989 release of the instant and eternal classic, Disintegration, a culmination of Smith's finest stylistic experiments, topped charts worldwide and gave The Cure a Top 10 hit single with "Love Song." The group is GRAMMY® nominated for it's 2000 release Bloodflowers, regarded by many as their best studio album, and in 1991 received a Brit Award for Best British Group. The Cure became a part of American pop culture with Smith's memorable appearance on South Park and their notable contribution to The X Files album. Their music is currently featured in the major motion picture 50 First Dates starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore.

WHAT: The Cure will be inducted into HOLLYWOOD'S ROCKWALK, the only sidewalk gallery dedicated to honoring those artists who have made a significant impact and lasting contribution to the growth and evolution of Rock `n Roll. The handprints and signatures of The Cure (Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Perry Bamonte, Jason Cooper, Roger O'Donnell) will reside right next to such equally accomplished musicians and innovators as Jimi Hendrix, Lou Reed, Johnny Cash, Aerosmith, B.B. King, Sonic Youth, James Brown, George Martin, Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, Carlos Santana, Carl Perkins, John Lee Hooker, The Ramones, Bonnie Raitt, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Los Lobos, Motorhead and X among numerous others.

WHERE: THE ROCKWALK (www.rockwalk.com and www.thecure.com) 7425 Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood 323/874-1060

    WHEN: Friday, April 30 at 8 p.m.

Then there are the boxes that are best appreciated by the fans. For many people, five CDs of Chicago, five CDs of the Temptations or four CDs of Peter, Paul and Mary are too much; a nice, concise single-disc greatest hits is sufficient. (And it's likely only a hard-core Cure fan would want four discs of that group's B-sides.)"

  • Billboard picks up the new album story and confirms the time frame of the "Curefest" tour, and reveals a new release date for the remastered albums:

  • New Cure Album Due In Late June

The Cure has nailed down a June 22 release date for its 13th studio album. The as-yet-untitled set will be issued by Geffen via producer Ross Robinson's I Am imprint, to which the Cure signed last year after parting ways with longtime label Fiction/Elektra.

The Robert Smith-led band will perform the album's yet-to-be-revealed first single April 30 on NBC's "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," the same day the quintet will be inducted into the Hollywood Rockwalk on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.

Two days later, the Cure will headline the second night of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif. A North American tour is expected to run from late July to September with several up-and-coming support acts clearly influenced by the Cure's sound, but a spokesperson stresses the lineup and routing are still being finalized.

North American fans will have one additional chance to see the group at the WHFStival, to be held May 22 at Washington, D.C.'s RFK Stadium. The Cure will be featured on a star-studded bill that also includes Jay-Z, Violent Femmes, the Offspring, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse, Cypress Hill and P.O.D., among others.

From there, the group will visit a handful of European festivals, including June 22 and 27 at the Hurricane and Southside festival in Germany, July 9 at the Move festival in Manchester, England, and the following day at the Oxegen festival in Naas, Ireland.

The Cure's upcoming album will be its first since 2000's "Bloodflowers," which debuted at No. 16 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 290,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Looming on the horizon are expanded reissues of the Cure albums "Three Imaginary Boys," "Seventeen Seconds," "Faith" and "Pornography," tentatively due Aug. 17 via Warner Strategic Marketing.

Smith has recently guested on albums by Blink-182, tweaker, Just Jack and Earl Slick.

  • Well, there's a new Cure/Geffen press release, but strangely, there's no real info in it:

  • Santa Monica , California , April 20, 2004 - The Cure, one of the most revered British bands of the past quarter-century, has signed with I Am/Geffen Records and will soon release their first album of new music since 2000's "Bloodflowers." The cd, the band's 13th studio record, has been recorded at London 's Olympic Studios, with Ross Robinson (Korn, Limp Bizkit, At The Drive In) producing. The new disc, as yet untitled, arrives in US stores June 22 nd . I Am Records is Ross Robinson's imprint label.

Led as always by lead singer/guitarist Robert Smith, the Cure line-up since 1994 comprises longtime bass player Simon Gallup, guitarist Perry Bamonte, drummer/percussionist Jason Cooper, and keyboardist Roger O'Donnell. Perennially popular with fans all around the world, the bands are currently enjoying a huge resurgence of interest. Earlier this year, Fiction Records released a compelling Cure collection, "Join the Dots: B-sides & Rarities 1978- 2001," a 4-cd 70 song box set. Among a number of genre spanning collaborations undertaken in the last few months Smith has sung on the track "All Of This" from the new blink-182 cd, "Truth Is" on the new Tweaker cd, and the dance smash "Da Hype" with Junior Jack. 311 recently went to number 1 in the U.S. modern rock chart with a cover of The Cure's "Love Song" as featured in the film "50 First Dates" soundtrack, and numerous new bands such as Interpol, the Rapture and Hot Hot Heat! have been outspoken in their admiration for the Cure.

With the release of the new cd, the Cure return to the U.S. for a special headline performance on the second day of the Coachella Festival, May 2, which is now close to a complete sell-out. To kick off Coachella, the Cure will perform their new single on the Tonight Show on April 30th.

The band first formed in southern England in 1976 as Easy Cure. In 1978 the 'Easy' was dropped, and The Cure was signed to the Fiction label. In May 1979 their debut album 'Three Imaginary Boys' was released to great acclaim.

Other landmark Cure albums include "Pornography" (1982), "The Head on the Door" (1985), "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" (1987), "Disintegration" (1989), "Wish" (1992), "Wild Mood Swings" (1996) and the Grammy-nominated "Bloodflowers" (2000).

    (Thanks Peter and Reuss)

  • And the story has been picked up by N.M.E., XFM, Visions and BBC6:

  • "They are on BBC6 news talking about the album coming out on 21st June. Talks about Move and Dublin festivals and that Ross produced the album and Robert is keen to get out and play the new songs live. I think they repeat the news every half an hour. "

    (Thanks Chris)

"I'm a sound-engineer student at the SAE Brussels, and when entering our school, there's always this TV broadcasting MTV ( don't know which MTV though... ). This afternoon, as i walked towards the exit during the intercourse, there was this absolutly HORRIBLE mix being aired, between a completely idiot Nellie song and The Cure's splendid Lovecats. Disgusting... Hell, why do they even think of doing such stupid mixes??? Well hell, can't do much about it, can we?"

  • Roger works with Frausdots:

  • "I just thought you might be interested in knowing that Roger O'Donnell recorded some keyboards on my bands upcoming album. My name is Carl Tapia and I play keyboards in a band called Frausdots on Sub Pop Records. Brint Rademaker, the singer/songwriter/guitarist for Frausdots (Brint's bands also include Beachwood Sparks , and The Tyde) is friends with Roger O'Donnell and he was nice enough to lend his talent and creativity to our music. The album is titled "Couture, Couture, Couture" and will be released by Sub Pop Records here in the US in September. We also have a limited edition CDEP being released by Houston Party Records in Spain in June.

Here's a link to related Frausdots web content. "

    (Thanks Carl)

  • Curespotting:

  • "Bit of a late one but in this week's N.M.E. Alex Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand was featured in the Whenever, Wherever section talking about the tunes he would download on to his digital music player for when his Queuing for a club, In the Bedroom, Before a show, etc. For the At 3am section he chose 10:15 Saturday Night and had this to say about it. "It's got that, maybe not a 3am feeling, but that thing where you're keeping yourself awake. It reflects the neurosis you get when you're totally starved of sleep".

On a quick personal note, CHRIS if you're reading this, this is Dan from Fopp in Cambridge, pop in the shop again mate."

    (Thanks Skamrok)

"In Rollingstone's "Immortals: the 50 greatest artists" sadly, the cure didn't make it there....but there are also reviews on new albums and Robert is mentioned on Earl Slick's album review.

Also, I have no clue if this has ever been said, but in Canada's side of the Niagara Falls, where falls avenue is, (with all the shops and such) there is a little place that is a wax museum of classic rockers and Robert Smith is one of them, unfortunately I couldn't go in but by the ones I saw (Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne) that were visible from the outside, they looked awesome.

    (Thanks Diandra)

And I have a couple to add as well. First, on this week's version of VH1's Best Week Ever , 'Lovesong' was used for a segment on "Showmance" (romances on reality tv shows). Second, on MTV2's Top Rock Countdown, after playing 311's cover of 'Lovesong', the host mentioned that it was a cover of the classic Cure song, and that The Cure had a new album coming out soon. He then mentioned that Morrissey also had a new album out soon, and mentioned the "bad blood" between the two, before suggesting having Robert vs Morrissey in a steel cage match on next week's show.

Ah, Curespottings! How would any of us live without this info. : )

  • Olivier has sent another great clip for the Audio/Video Archive. This time it's 'Boys Don't Cry' from French tv in 1986:

  • "On The Cure Picture Show VHS, the Why Can't I Be You? video is followed by TV footage played over Hey You!!! It starts with a short black & white sequence showing the band in frocks and make-up miming to Boys Don't Cry on the set of French TV show Champs-Elysées. Here's the full-length color version of this with the proper soundtrack. It was originally aired on Antenne 2 on October 4th, 1986 and shot at the Pavillon Baltard in Nogent-sur-Marne probably a few days before."

  • (odd) Cure cover:

  • "I was in the Rincon Center food court plaza having a burger listening to the usually cheesy piano player they have there... when I just kind of got drawn into what he was playing, it was familiar, but just barely. He started a new song, and I kind of got the same impression - it was the kind of piano I really like, very baroque, cascading, but intensely melodic. All of a sudden the melody snapped into place and you could have knocked me over with a feather. It was a classical arrangement of 'Just Like Heaven'. It was one of the best arrangements of any pop song I had ever heard... ever.

The guy had a few strong facial tics, and carried himself really awkwardly... I wouldn't be surprised if he kind of had the whole (pardon the term) idiot savant thing going on... It was _fantastically_ complex... like sending Morse code with fireworks..."

  • Major news update on the album, the video and Curefest:

  • So I get an e-mail tonight, telling me to "be in Pirate's Alley in the French Quarter at 11pm. It's about The Cure." So I go there, wait for about 10 minutes, and a mysterious cloaked figure walks up and hands me a slip of paper. I look at the paper and it has the following written on it:

The album is currently being planned for release on June 22nd or 29th in North America.

The video for the new single is being directed by Floria Sigismondi. She has worked with Incubus, Christina Aguilera and Sigur Ros, but also did 'Obstacle 1' for Interpol. Check out her website for full credits.

Curefest looks to be kicking off on July 24th in Miami, Florida. Main stage lineup is The Cure, Interpol, The Rapture and Mogwai.

    Anybody excited yet? : )

"I heard the extended remix of "Never Enough" on the Dan Patrick Show(espn radio) today. It was used as lead in music. They started off with Robert's howl and continued to play it while Dibble did a voice over.

Also 850 KOA in Denver uses "Just Like Heaven" a lot in their Colorado Rockies broadcasts.

It seems sports TV events use The Cure often as I seem to hear them a lot on past Olympic broadcasts and Highlights(on espn) and ABC. Doesn't seem like the two go together but it is still nice to hear it!"

    (Thanks Adam)

"Tonight, coming home, I switched on the tely and on French channel Canal +, in the program 'Merci pour l'Info' (thanks for the news), thay had a guest who was Yves Duteil (french old fashioned singer, millions of miles away from Cure style) and for a moment they debated on the problems of the music industry (less sales, more illegal copies). In the background they have a wall of tv screen, and while they were speaking one could see images from various videos, recods shops and cd shelves, that sort of things, in relation to music, and among other things, Mr Robert Smith lying in a bed, you got it, from the Lullaby video. It only lasted a second, but was fun to see. I only cought the last 2 or 3 minutes of the program, so can't tell you if there were more Cure references earlier on."

    (Thanks Fabien G)

"French singer Vincent Delerm released his second and brilliant album called "Kensington Square". Previously he told that "Disintegration" chords had inspired one song talking about writer Patrick Modiano. Reading lyrics, I noticed that "Just Like Heaven" and "Cure" were both appearing in two different songs.

And Vincent is also walking like a pigeon... A French clone ??

In a TV show called "Nouvelle Star", one of the competitor is a fan of pop-rock music (yesterday he covered Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit") and last week, as he had sung a song rolling on the ground, Manu Katche, a drummer and a member of the jury, said he really liked the Curish way Steve chose to sing, telling that lipstick were the only missing thing. • Some info for the Italian shows:
  • "Ticketone says it will have the tickets for the Neapolis Festival soon at this page.

And now, something on the venues: Ticketone says the Naples show will be at the Italsider in Bagnoli, via Coroglio 49; Bagnoli may be, i don't know, a suburb of Naples? someone from that zone will know for sure. The show will begin at 9 pm, always according to Ticketone.

A pop-up window in the official festival site has some acrobat documents with informations on: the city hotels, hostels, campings, bed & breakfast and residences (all in all it's a pretty long list!) and how to get to the venue (that one may be misleading, since the site itself says the festival has had many locations in the years, and this same years some shows will be held in other venues than this one above) by car, train, plane. evertything is in italian ,though.

Then, about Imola, the exact name of the venue should be "Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari": the notations on how to arrive there can be found, i guess, from any of the Ticketone pages for the F1 grand prix which will be soon: just click on the "Come arrivarci" link in the bottom right and you'll have, in italian, the infos for car & train. just below that link, there are also a nice overview of the track ("Mappa struttura") and the possibility to find your route in an online street map ("Mappa stradale"). The address is via Fratelli Rosselli, 2 (Imola).

Its site is www.autodromoimola.it, which has an english version also with its own infos on how to reach Imola. The parking is under payment but unkept and there are facilities for handicapped.

Also, the site rockstar.it mentions the two confirmed italian festivals. Phew! i think i said everything : ) "

  • Smith vs. (former) Smith - Round 2:

    CLASH OF THE BRITONS

    By MARY HUHN

April 13, 2004 -- ROCK fans have been arguing about the Cure vs. the Smiths since the '80s, and with new albums due from the Cure and Morrissey, the debate isn't going to end anytime soon.

The ever-reclusive Morrissey, former frontman of the Smiths (which disbanded in 1987), is emerging from his L.A. cocoon with a new album, "You Are the Quarry," his first in seven years, and a new tour, selling out five nights at Harlem's Apollo Theater and headlining Lollapalooza.

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old band the Cure, who just signed with MCA, will release a studio album in June and co-headline the Coachella Music Festival in May.

Just like fans are devoted to either the Yankees or the Mets, or The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, the two Brit bands have their own distinct following.

"The Smiths fans are gloomy, the Cure fans are goth," says Marc Spitz, a senior writer with Spin, who interviewed Morrissey for the May issue.

"Morrissey fans are less flamboyant. They're more bookish than vampire-like."

If it seems like junior high school all over again, it is - complete with name-calling and stewing over old grudges.

After hearing Morrissey will play Lollapalooza, the Cure's frontman Robert Smith threw the first dart, in Entertainment Weekly.

"[Morrissey] was constantly saying horrible things about [the Cure]. I kind of snapped and started retaliating. And it turned into some kind of petty feud," said Smith.

"I've never liked anything he's done musically, but I don't have any kind of strong feelings of animosity towards him as a person because I've never met him."

Morrissey has yet to respond, but the debate is already raging over who's remained truer to his brooding roots.

"Morrissey insists there's no change from his stage persona and private self," says Spitz.

But Spitz won't say the same about the Cure frontman.

"I've heard that he is a beer-drinking, football [soccer] fan - more of a lad. Then when it's time to go onstage, he becomes a tortured soul."

Have you ever read a more idiotic story? It's pretty funny though, especially those broad stereotypes thrown out by Spitz. Hmm, not goth, not vampire-like, not flamboyant...damn, I guess I'm really not a Cure fan after all.

And just for the record, I LOVE The Smiths! Watcha gonna do about it? : )

  • Stylus magazine rates the greatest solos of all time:
  • "Stylus Magazine has listed the piano/toy piano part in "A Letter to Elise" as the #2 greatest solo of all time.

"This sad piece of Cure pop (not as playful though as the gamboling Goths of “The Lovecats”, “Friday I’m in Love” or “Hey You!!!”) is the loneliest and prettiest moment on the stodgy overlong Wish.

This is not really the actual solo, that title belongs to a piece of harmless generic Cure guitar, which is best left undiscussed. The piano melody is the real show stealer, echoed closely by the tinny chime of a child’s toy piano. It underscores and then overtakes the guitar, its metallic tone lifting the tune above the heavy low end sound of the song.

Perhaps Smith thought that it was time to seek to elevate the toy piano beyond its childlike “Three Blind Mice” connotations, much like John Cage attempted to do with 1948’s Suite for Toy Piano. Or perhaps they got pissed up in the rehearsal room on Japanese lager and thought to explore similar territory to their kazoo version of “The Walk”? "

  • Some tips for those of you who want tickets for the Tonight Show:
  • "I wanted to give my advice on going to see The Cure on the Tonight Show, for those who've never been to NBC studios. I went way back in 97 when they were promoting Galore. This information is based on what I experienced at the time, and I have no idea if any of the policies of being on the property have changed. (It is important to find out.)

I've reviewed the information for obtaining tickets, on the Tonight Show web site, and it looks the same as 7 years ago.

OK, so the big trick to getting in and getting the best seats is; SPEND THE NIGHT on the sidewalk outside of the gift shop AND BRING A FRIEND!. Get there around maybe around 10pm, or earlier if you dare. When I went, it was 1am and I was about 8th in line or so at the gift shop. Up to you.

Your friend should go spend the night at the guest entrance to the studio, on Alameda Ave. That is the important part. Everyone will get a ticket at the gift shop, but not everyone gets in. So you need to get as far up in the entry line as possible. I got in the ticket line, and my friend had already staked out 3rd place in the entry line! The first people let in have choice of where to sit. Some seats may be taped off but if you ask, you may be allowed to sit there. (This was the entire front row when I was there.) The best place to sit to see the band, will be to the left, on the floor, to be closest. The least obstructed view is the upper left area, near the band stage, but it is not the closest. If you want the best chance to try to be on TV, then it's front and center.

Other tips: If you drive there, park on Alameda Ave. as close as possible to the Chevron. The Chevron is 24 hrs, so you can get food/drinks and use the rest room there before the show.

Do yourself a favor and bring sleeping bags.

It would be a good idea to bring entertainment. The nice girls in line ahead of us had Pictionary, and it was good fun.

Make friends with the people around you, it's fairly important. I save saying why, because I don't want any fucktards to get any bad ideas. Just trust me, you don't want a dumb ass to get mad at you, and you not have anyone speak up for you if need be.

Before the show, Jay Leno will come out and answer questions. This is when you can ask him for a picture! They'll take a Polaroid of you/your group with Jay, for free!!

If you are lucky enough to be sitting near the isle, in the path of the cameraman, you may notice a cue card taped to the camera. That's got the list of the guests on it (including the band.) If you're able, ask for it. There are only 2 of them, so be quick. I managed to get one. The cameraman handed it to me right after the credits started rolling. Don't ask the usher about it. They've got other things to do, and you just have a better chance of asking the guy on the camera. Best time is during a break. Just don't hold your breath, they may not give it up.

After the show, Jay might get the band to sign one of his blue que cards. He gave one out before, and this was to someone sitting in the front and center area.

On the way out, look for the table with the tickets on it. These are fresh tickets for the same date, to take home. They collect yours on the way in, and chances are it would have gotten beat up during the day. No need to worry about keeping yours immaculate prior to the show!"

    (Thanks Jon)

  • So Robert finally leaked a bit of info about this summer's "Curefest" to EW. Yes, you can forget about 2 and a half to 3 hour shows, and get used to the idea of 90-105 minute sets. So it will be The Cure, Interpol and The Rapture, plus more bands to be announced later.
  • Update: No, "Curefest" is NOT "in addition to" the regular North American tour, "Curefest" IS the North American tour. And yes, I do think it's a stupid idea.

  • The Cure are featured in the new issue of Entertainment Weekly:
  • "The Cure are featured in the April 16th, 2004 Entertainment Weekly magazine. "Robert Smith on the Cure at 26" includes pics and an interview. Robert says (speaking of the 20 new songs they have recorded), "There's five incredibly heavy songs, five wistful and nostalgic, five out-and-out pop songs and five weird things." They plan to pick ten for the album."

You can view scans of the article on the Music Fan Club forum.

    (Thanks Rust and Artgal)

Update: Apparently, this isn't in the newstand editions of EW:

"The Cure are featured in the new issue (#760, 4/16/04), two-page huge photo + article in a section called, "Listen to This." Thought I would let you know as I'm sure many other people are perplexed as to why they don't have the "Listen to This" section in their issue of EW. This extra section is available via SUBSCRIPTION only (you can not buy it in any store), and not every subscription has it. You have to actually register for this extra section (which comes out once/twice a month). I've subscribed to EW for over 10 years and I didn't have it. I called EW and it's also not possible to backorder issues with the extra "listen to this" section. "

    (Thanks MickelCure)

  • So with an impending single release, it's time to bring back the Support The Single page. Help me get it updated so that we can be ready to go, once the single hits radio. Let me know which old stations to remove, which new ones to add, and any of the contact info I'm missing.

  • CNN actually ran a story about the Robert/Moz "feud" last night:
  • "Well... despite horrific violence throughout the world, it still must be a slow newsday. On Anderson Cooper's 360 on CNN he picked up on the NY Post's gossip article on very old news... they played clips of Robert and a few of Morrissey while Anderson Cooper regurgitated the NY Post gossip article, then ended with the snide remark... "which leaves people wondering who are these people? What is a Morrissey? And why should we care?" WE DON'T CARE! It's you and the New York Post picking up on very, very old news and making an issue out of it! ARGH! Why not talk about the new Cure record? "

  • Some tips for those of you travelling to Six-Fours:
  • "Some informations for those who are going to the french Festival Des Voix Du Gaou in Six-Fours (Toulon) : During this period (june to september), this region is invaded by tourists going to the beach and it will be very hard to reach the festival site by car. The first option is to arrive very soon (in the morning...) and try (!) to park in the streets. The second option for those arriving late is to park your car a few kilometers from the site, and walk to it... (or take the bus shuttle). Roads to Le Brusc (the small village near Six-fours, where the festival takes place) should be closed very soon in the afternoon. The Gaou peninsula is a very nice and tiny place and I can't wait to see The Cure playing here !"

In the German Alternative Charts (where the Cure seem to dominate there, since Da hype, which topped at #7, just went out of the chart, and Bloodflowers also went #1 for several weeks), it arrived three weeks ago placing at #23, then climbing on to #14, and then to #13 in the 2/4 week!

It also is in the HHV 75 chart with this progression: entered 19/2 peaking at 49, and now is at 51 It maybe entered more charts, but it's a long search. "

    (Thanks Pietro)

Update: "those 'german alternative charts' are a bit dubious, as it is based purely on what djs play in alternative clubs + so they send kind of their fave songs at the moment, which they put on the turntables in the club. so, not a single sale is involved for that + if it is actually played no-one really knows... if you ask me, that chart was just invented so indie recordcompanies can celebrate some top 10 entries for their band + put that into the press release... "

    (Thanks Dennis)

  • Will it never go away?
  • "Excerpt from Interview with Junior Jack, Beat Magazine (Melbourne Street Press) April 7, 2004:

Coming out his state of semi-retirement, The Cure’s enigmatic frontman Robert Smith lent his vocal talents to Da Hype, which has become perhaps the most successful tune for the Italian/Belgian DJ thus far, with the UK’s Q Magazine branding it ‘One Of The Top 3 Dance Tracks Ever.’

“I was never expecting that one day Robert Smith would be singing one of my tracks,” he admits with a note of admiration in his accented voice. “I was always a big fan of The Cure so he was like an untouchable star for me. But the owner of the record company that I’m signed to here was in England with Robert’s manager and they were talking. He mentioned to the manager about the Junior Jack album and we were looking for a singer for this track. The manager said he would play it to Robert and you never know. Then Robert heard the track and did something straight away; he sent me a demo and told me ‘if you like we’ll use, if you don’t like just trash.’ I was surprised, you know, but I contacted him and we met up and did the track in a studio in England. He is very cool and simple guy, very normal, so it was cool working with him.”

The full interview is available at http://www.beat.com.au/playcover.shtml (probably only for the next five days)."

  • "Caught this today:

    http://www.nypost.com/gossip/16274.htm

April 8, 2004 -- GET ready for a new rock rivalry: Robert Smith (above), singer for new wave heroes The Cure, sounds ready to pull fellow '80s icon Morrissey's pompadoured hair out. "He was constantly saying horrible things about [The Cure]," Smith sniffs to Entertainment Weekly. "In the end, I kind of snapped and started retaliating. And it turned into some kind of petty feud. I've never liked anything he's done musically, but I don't have any kind of strong feelings of animosity towards him as a person because I've never met him." "

    (Thanks Aaron)

"there is a weekly city guide magazine in athens, greece called "athinorama", something like time out. it has 2 pages of c.d.'s reviews, in today's publication it had a review of "join the dots", giving it five stars out of five and saying that "the b-sides of the cure are far supirior to a lot of contemporary music" ! and this review, i have to tell, matters a lot because the reviewer very rarely gives more than 3 stars, the last time he gave 5 stars to an album was 7 years ago for massive attack's mezzanine. • An update on some of the recent rumors:
  • The Pixies - After much speculation and rumor, we can eliminate them from the North American Cure tour, as Billboard announced this morning that they will be doing their own US tour later in the summer/autumn.

Move Festival - I've heard from enough sources now. This one has a 99% probability of happening.

T in the Park - Not quite as sure on this one, but I'll put it at 85% probability of happening.

Oxegen Festival - Haven't heard much more about this one unfortunately. Doesn't look good for Ireland, but let's hope something changes.

North American Tour - This one IS NOT a rumor! I'm surprised by the number of e-mails I've been getting lately, asking if The Cure will ever do another tour in the US/Canada. I thought it had been fairly well established since Jan. that yes, The Cure will be on tour in North America this summer. Not speculation, not an april fools joke, not a rumor, but FACT.

  • Before this gets out of control, the listing at Music Target is wrong. That title and date are for the new Corrs album, not The Cure.

  • A review from a recent Levinhurst show:
  • "I just saw Levinhurst on 3-31-04 in Indianapolis. It was nice to see Lol on stage again. He, Cindy and Dayton preformed songs from their record Perfect Life and did a great job. Plenty of technology on stage and Lol played both keyboards and percussion. The songs came across very well live and it looked like they were having fun on stage. After the show I hung out with the band and they could not have been nicer people! Everyone was in good spirits and were excited about the new record. Lol mentioned that this was a brief tour before going out for a full tour this summer. If you get the chance to see them, I recommend it.

"Read in the Fnac Stores magazine called Epok :

Vincent Delerm, a very talented french singer, talking about his new album :

Epok : At 17, you built a band, Triste Sire, influenced by The Cure or Joy Division. Where did that cold wave culture went away ?

V.D. : Even if can seem bizarre, the chord movement on Modiano song is influenced by the Disintegration album by The Cure..."

"This is the comment on a song which appears in an italian magazine compilation: Ragazzi - Weekend from the album "Friday"

Today's "Ragazzi" [means "boys", ndP] look back in time, to that 80s now incredibly fashionable again. Even Germany cannot resist this revival of OMD-like synth sounds and guitars which resemble the Cure in their wave pop period. Listening to "Weekend" is a real jump backwards in time, to 20 years ago, and its melody stays in your brain ready to be sung again."

  • I just put another great video up. This time it's The Cure doing an early version of 'The Figurehead' at Pippbrook Mill. Here's some background info on it:
  • "The Pippbrook Mill - see attached contemporary picture - is the place in Dorking, UK where The Cure worked on demos (and recorded some?) of Pornography in December 1981. A team of the Mégahertz music show on French channel TF1 went there and shot the band playing The Figurehead."

  • A couple of more pieces for the "unkown songs" puzzle:
  • "The songs Confessions of a Thug and Excuse Me? are real songs recorded by the band We Know Where You Live and released on a CD single in 1996 I think. The interesting thing is that We Know Where You Live contained members of the then recently defunct Wonder Stuff (one of my favorites) including Martin Gilks who was a potential Boris replacement prior to Jason back in the early recording days around Wild Mood Swings. Martin is even thanked in the credits on the record. The songs are credited to WKWYL on the single though...hmm maybe there was a mix up (no pun intended) at ASCAP."

    (Thanks Chris)

"As we know that Robert often gets inspired by books, i had a look on the Internet, and there is indeed a book "Confessions Of A Thug" by Philip Meadows Taylor, released in 1839... could be a really interesting song theme i think, something different! Just one link about the history of the book: http://books.guardian.co.uk/review/story/0,12084,876098,00.html"

    March 30, 2004

    Hello Everybody:

The new Cowboy Junkies CD, One Soul Now, is being released on May 31 in Europe and June 8 in North America.

    <Edit>

Now, about the album: we will be doing a pre-sale of the CD on our website beginning in a few weeks. It's best for us (and cheaper for you) if you buy it directly from us. You won't get it any quicker just because it's already popped up on Amazon.com and other retail sites; no one can ship the album before June 8th. Word is already out that we're packaging a limited-edition 5-song cover CD, 'neath your covers, part 1, with the new album, featuring our spin on songs by Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, The Cure, Townes Van Zandt and The Youngbloods. And, we will be offering a package including an Anatomy Of An Album CD-ROM, which will be available ONLY through our website. The Anatomy CD-ROM will include a "behind-the-scenes" look at every song on One Soul Now -- demo recordings, various lyric drafts, photos taken during the writing/recording and a written piece by Michael explaining how each song came to be."

If you missed the previous reports, they are doing 'Seventeen Seconds'. And if you don't want the album, you can still get the song from Puretracks (Canadian residents only). Hey, don't blame me, blame Canada! : )

    (Thanks Bill)

"This is not a very recent curespotting, but I don't recall anyone mentioning this one before. A friend lent me recently Icehouse's 1995 album, "The Berlin Tapes". Among several (16) remarkable covers made for a ballet in Australia, Icehouse made an interesting version of "At Night". "The Berlin Tapes" was remastered in 2002."

"The Batcave was an early goth club in London where many well know artists and singers hung out.

MARC ALMOND: The Batcave moved around a couple of places, but I remember it best at a place called Gossips in Soho. You had to take a lift up to the top floor, which used to be a hostess club. There was a little theater where stripteases used to take place and they used it to watch gothic movies, or bands would perform there, and you could see people like Robert Smith hanging out at the bar.

ROBERT SMITH: We used to go to the Batcave because we got in free and it was a good atmosphere and the people were really nice. But the music was awful! That whole romanticism of death! Anybody who's ever experienced death firsthand could tell you there's nothing romantic about it.

"VH1 in the UK are running an "80s Week" and featured The Cure performing Inbetween Days on The Grey Whistle Test from 1985. Unfortunately, they were followed closely by The Smiths."

  • So, what's been going on? I went away for a day, anything happen? Ok, ok, as much as I feel I shouldn't have to tell you this, IT WAS A JOKE! HOW COULD YOU MISS IT!?!?
  • All of it was made up, except for most of the song titles, but I'll get to that in a moment. The Cure ARE NOT releasing an album called Winter, they ARE NOT playing small theatres, and they absolutely ARE NOT playing multiple nights in each city. All fake. Not happening.

And while those song titles ARE NOT for the new album, most of them are real. Let me explain:

Quitting Again & Stay are totally fake. I made them up. Forget them.

Winter is the title of an old Cure track that MIGHT be included on the Three Imaginary Boys bonus disc. You can read more about it here (Dec. 23rd update) and in this Record Collector article.

Everything Forever and Heavy World are two of the "missing songs" from the Bloodflowers sessions.

Don't Believe A Word is the Thin Lizzy song that the band played at many of the 2002 shows. It was also a warning about the article. : )

There's a Planet In My Kitchen was the title of a song Robert wrote while in Siouxsie and the Banshees. You can find it on the Dear Prudence 12" single.

The rest were found by accident while searching the ASCAP database. Take a look at it and you'll see that Another Happy Birthday (Instrumental) and Hope (Instrumental) are credited to Robert. No Heat...(Instrumental) is credited to Robert and Simon. Confessions of a Thug and Excuse Me? are credited to Perry, Jason, Simon, Roger and Robert. And there's another one that I didn't use called Peachellymelba (Instrumental) that is also credited to Robert. These ARE NOT for the new album though. Probably just demos, alternate titles, or missing songs, but still very interesting.

So I hope that clears it all up. And for those of you who are STILL pissed off about it, I think Sgt. Hulka said it best in Stripes - "Lighten up Frances".

  • COF wasn't the only one who had a Cure april fools story. I would have preferred Rilo Kiley. : )

"Most of the improvement, however, is in the material. The album steps fearlessly where rock's heaviest acts dare not tread, into a kind of headphone rock sprinkled with details and a recurring Cure-like drone, and occasionally even an arch prettiness. As one might surmise from the title, the album's 12 tracks also have a thematic unity."
