  • The final tour? Probably, but maybe not...
  • "Just wanted to let you know that Robert called in to KROQ this morning from Oberhausen to bid Ricard Blade (one of our DJ's) good-bye at his retirement party.

Anyway, they asked about the rumors of it being the final tour and Robert answered that because he hasn't been saying it this time people are starting to believe it might actually be true. He said he isn't saying it because he knows it's become a joke but that certainly the intention as they travel around the world this time is that this is certainly the the last time they will do anything on this scale. He did say "we'll see" at the end so maybe we can hang on to that for some hope."

    (Thanks Emily)

  • There are new Cure articles in the French newspaper "Le Monde" (28/04/2000), at Launch.com (also at MSN) and on the "Les Inrocks" website. Also, there is a photo of Robert on the Gretsch Guitars website.
  • (Thanks Alexandre, Julien, midnightt, Dave)

  • Curespotting:
  • "This morning (wednesday) on A&E they played a program, "Teenagers Under the Gun," they followed and had a group discussion with several kids at Cherry Hill East High School. One of the guys they followed had a boys don't cry poster above his pillow and at one point wore a wish style cure shirt. Good program, stupid title. It was valuable for me as I am a doctoral student in youth psychology. I want to return to kids some of what the cure (Robert) gave me :.-)."

    (Thanks Jonathan)

"Just got back from the Wednesday April 26th Nine Inch Nails show in Chicago. A band called A Perfect Circle did a cover of Lovesong in its set. The lead singer used to front the band Tool; he said the band did not play it last Friday when the two bands first rolled through town. Their rendition had a harder edge to it and some alternate lyrics. I liked it though and the band too. The new (first?) album for APC is scheduled for a May 23 release date and I don't know if the Lovesong cover will be on it."

    Update:

"A Perfect Circle is fronted by Maynard of Tool. This is a side project and Tool is still intact. Their cover of Lovesong is actually two cover songs rolled into one. It's actually the words (most of it) to Ozzy's Diary of a Madman sung to a harder version of Lovesong. He does mix in Lovesong lyrics in the chorus'. It will not appear on the album, Mer De Noms, which will be available on May 23rd. go to www.aperfectcircle.com for more info."

"The band A Perfect Circle is indeed covering the Cure classic "Lovesong" in live shows. However what they are doing with it is very unique. They have taken the lyrics from a song by none other than Ozzy Osbourne "Diary of a madman" and merged it with the melody of "Lovesong". The new song that results is called "Diary of a Lovesong". Unfortunately it won't be part of the band's album to be released in May."

    (Thanks Kevin, Jerry, Chip)

  • I'm listening to Qui FM right now and besides airing the 1st 3 songs (OOTW, Watching Me Fall, Want) from tonight's show, they've also been playing a bunch of Cure tracks all afternoon and also airing a recent interview with Robert. Here are a couple of interesting things that were revealed:
  • Robert said that 'Just Say Yes' is one of the "poppiest" tracks they've ever done and that it will be available to be downloaded from the internet very soon (presumably from the official site).

And he also reiterated that this will absolutely be the final tour. He's 100% sure and he'll shoot himself if he goes back on that. He said it's an ironcast decision and everyone in the band knows he's serious. He hasn't said too much about it in interviews, because he knows it has become a big joke. He also said this has been the best first month of a tour ever, and he has probably enjoyed it so much because he knows this is the last tour.

  • The Jones Beach on-sale date has been confirmed for May 6th at 8am. And just like with the PNC tickets, they are going on sale at the same time as a bunch of other shows (No Doubt, 311, Kiss, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Counting Crows).
  • (Thanks John and Scotty-Dog)

  • Bloodflowers sold 6,359 copies in it's 10th week of release in the US. This brings total US sales to 211,413.

  • Curespotting:
  • "I found a Cure T-shirt for your character to wear in the Maxis computer game "The Sims". I found this at www.mallofthesims.com, and if anyone wants to use it in their game just copy the file to: c:\program files\maxis\the sims\gamedata\skins. It looks pretty cool."

    (Thanks Jim)

"Today on the Real World reunion, they played Friday I'm In Love during the segment!"

    (Thanks Shannon)

"We' ve read in Mofo (free Belgian music magazine) that a Swedish band, Misery Loves Company, have covered The Drowning Man in their 3rd album called "Your vision was never mine to share". Band's leader Patrick Wiren says about it that "It's a superb song and we wanted to make it our own way"."

    (Thanks Vincent & Christelle)

  • Happy Birthday (a day late) and best wishes to Boris Williams!

  • We usually don't post stuff like this, but if anyone can help her out...
  • "I went to The Cure Dream Tour Concert at Wembley on Saturday and got so carried away that I left my program behind. I am absolutely gutted! I went back the next day but no joy.

Please can you tell me where I can get another. If you can only get them at the concerts, could you ask other Cure fans on your website, if someone could get me one. I would obviously reimburse them in full and I would be SO grateful!!

This was the only dissapointment on a wonderful night. Aren't they the best?!

    My email address is glynispethick@yahoo.co.uk.

    Thanks a lot."

  • Curespotting:
  • "MTV is having their Movie Awards soon, and is running a slew of commercials showing all the nominees under various categories. On the commercial for Best Actress, they play "Maybe Someday" in the background during Sarah Michelle Gellar's nomination clip."

  • Curespotting:
  • "I was watching a Rock and Roll Jeopardy re-run on VH1 a couple nights ago and a 1000 point clue was "The Cure sang "I thought you were the girl I always dreamed about" in "A letter to" her. A contestant got it right with, "Who is Elise?"

    (Thanks Marty)

"Yesterday morning I was watching the first channel in France and during the presentation of an Auto-Moto game, I heard a few notes of "Out of this world", and it's the second time a Cure song is played on this program. A Cure fan is certainly working there!"

    (Thanks David)

"This weekend I was listening to the NPR show This American Life (for those not familiar with the show - it is a radio show which has a different theme each week and people tell stories related to the theme). This week's show was about sissies, which they described as men who were not necessarily gay but crossed gender lines in some way (ie - wearing make-up). At the beginning of one person's commentary, they played Close To Me in the background. I don't know they were tieing the theme to the band or not, but i thought it was kind of amusing that they chose to play them."

    (Thanks GSouthern)

    April 22nd

  • I've posted some scans of the 'Out of This World' US promo cd.
  • (Thanks Brian)

  • Méxican music magazine ¨Lengua¨ (April/May issue), includes a 2 page article about The Cure under the title ¨El Señor de las Tinieblas ha Vuelto¨ (¨The Return of Mr. Gloom¨); it is basically the article of ¨Página 12¨ supplement, an argentinean newspaper.
  • (Thanks Luis Miguel)

  • Ok, Editoral / Rant time: This past week has seen many reviews from the Dream Tour speculate that there are "problems in the band" or that "Simon is mad at everyone" or some other ridiculous rumor. We have kept quiet about this for two reasons - 1. We had no idea what was really going on (same as those doing the speculating) and didn't feel we should say anything until we knew what we were talking about & 2. We really hate to alter/censor/edit any comments that someone else makes. However things have gotten totally out of control and are causing problems for everyone.
  • There are NO problems with the band! They are not fighting with each other and in fact, they are said to be getting along better than at any time during this lineup's existence. All of this pointless speculation has done nothing but cause problems. We have been told that whenever someone mentions one of these false rumors, they say "according to Chain of Flowers" or 'That's what COF said". No, that is absolutely wrong! WE didn't write those reviews, WE didn't speculate on any of this, and WE NEVER said anything about these false rumors. We will take the blame for posting the reviews in the first place (and for not editing them), but not for their content.

For some reason, everyone is now going to the shows looking for the slightest bit of "evidence" that there is trouble in the band, in order to back up their theory. Well you can stop now, and start actually enjoying the shows and listening to the music. The band are happy, they are doing a great setlist, they are playing with more confidence and intensity than they have in a long while and are putting on one hell of a show.

  • Curespotting:
  • "I happened to be watching "Later Today" yesterday morning, and Jane Seymour was a guest. She mentioned that The Cure and Radiohead have recorded albums in her house. The audience, unfortunately, didn't really react (positively or negatively) when she mentioned their name. Obviously, they have no musical tastes!"

    (Thanks Claiborne)

    April 21st

  • We would like to wish a very Happy Birthday to Robert Smith. Cheers!

  • Here are some of the highlights from the interview with Robert in 'De Volkskrant' (a newspaper in Holland):
  • "You asked me if there is something new or special in the interview with Robert Smith in The Volkskrant. Yes. Some bullet points:

    * Robert said he doesn't like Britpop. He more likes German music!!!!!!!

    * In the eighties he didn't like middle-aged rockstars. Now he is one of them.

    * More important: he wants to work at a solo career after the Dream Tour!!!!!!!!!!

    * He likes his family life. "Most people start their family life at 20 years. I start it at my 40th".

    * "The three most important albums for me are: Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers. In 2020 everyone must remember The Cure with those three albums. The rest you can throw in the paper basket". "

    (Thanks Mark)

  • There is a new article in the French newspaper "Le Monde" (aden) about the Dream Tour. It says that the band is actually on top and that popularity is back. "We haven't seen that since '87 !", said Roger.
  • (Thanks Pilal)

  • Also, yesterday the MTV-Russia during their news block told about an accident occured on Prague show. Nothing new, but it was declared that the police-officer had been on duty that day.

    (Thanks Goshmar & Disintegrator)

  • An update on the Lille situation:
  • "Yes, there are some troubles with the algerians here but not too much in the center. Most troubles are around the South of the city.

There is no problems with subway and the trains. You have to know that the Zénith Arena is at 10mn walk from the station only. When you go out from the station, you asked people for the "rue de tournai", you take that street, then you turn on the left, then you'll see a tunnel, you take it and you'll see the entrance of the Zénith Arena.

You should be able to join the concert easily."

Note: We would like to apologize to any Algerian fans who were offended by a potentially racist & hurtful remark that was posted earlier. It has been removed.

(Thanks to SEBSIOUX. and all of the great French fans who wrote in to help)

  • Curespotting:
  • "Robert Smith can be seen in this week's episode of South Park (The one featuring "Timmy!" and Phil Collins). They do an MTV News parody and Robert can be seen talking on one of the small screens behind Kurt Loder. He is dressed the same as he was in the other South Park episode he was in. I'm sure they'll re-run it again sometime this week."

    (Thanks Charlie & Robert)

"Earlier today I was in my college's snack bar area when I heard a familiar jingle. I thought one of our college radio station DJs had decided to break from his format to play some Cure, but when I looked up at the TV monitors that were connected to the College Television Network, I was pleasantly surprised to see Robert dancing around the screen in "The Lovecats". When the video was over, they listed it as "Old School" music. Hmmm... I wonder what they'd call the Beatles?"

    (Thanks Shawn)

"I was very annoyed by hearing some very dull easy-listening muzak version of "Friday I'm In Love" in my local supermarket today! It was recorded with nice trumpets, violins etc. and it made me almost puke! Blasphemy! I've heard the same thing with well-known tracks from bands as AC/DC, Oasis, Iron Maiden, U2 etc., but The Cure...c'mon!!!! "

    (Thanks Peter)

"I just got home from smashing pumpkins at U of M Hill Auditorium In Michigan. It was a great show. Anyway I had the chance to catch a glimpse of the band afterwords Mellissa Auf Der Mer had changed and was wearing a Moodswings t-shirt. It was the one with Robert on the front and the treasure lyrics on the back. The same one i was wearing. I yelled " Mellissa the Cure Rules" and she yelled back "Cant wait to see the Dream tour" I was like wow. Another funny thing Is when she plays bass she plays like simon. You know Knees bended doing that "Jig". I like her alot. Maybe she will cover a song and not butcher it like james with a night like this."

(Thanks Robert. Reminder - Robert is organizing a fan gathering for the Detroit show and if you're interested, contact him at Kissoftreachery@yahoo.com)

"This may be of interest only to botanists and other plant freaks, but I wanted to mention it anyway... In the Nature Conservancy's 2000 calendar, the photograph for April - the month of Robert's birthday - shows a field of brilliant orange-red flowers of the genus Asclepias, sometimes called butterfly weed, but also referred to as bloodflowers. I thought this was a strange and wonderful coincidence."

    (Thanks Traci)

    April 19th

  • New Robert interview in Belgium newspaper Le Soir:
  • "Just to say that there is an interview of Robert Smith in the newspaper Le Soir (Brussels) today at the occasion of the concert of Lille (this is actually the show that is closer to Belgium during the Dream Tour). This interview was done just before the Brussels promo show in February. Robert is described as a mature, relaxed and satisfied man who is still able to write "teen" songs. The interview goes about being in The Cure after 20 years, the different stages in the life of the band and also about tributes to The Cure."

    (Thanks Yves)

  • An update on tickets for the London & Strasbourg shows:
  • "I just gave a call to TicketMaster UK and they told me they only have 30 tickets left. They think the gig is going to be sold out, but they also told me they weren't the only agent selling tickets for that show (for example Wembley Arena has (had) got tickets also). So English fans, hurry up, maybe it's not too late !"

    (Thanks David)

"According to the ticket office here in Berlin there are only 100 tickets left for the concert in Straßbourg."

    (Thanks Simon)

  • We need the help of French fans again. We have heard that there is trouble around Lille due to an Algerian man being killed by a policeman last Sunday and that French police have had to use tear gas to keep control. Will this be a problem for fans travelling to the show tomorrow? Please let us know. Thanks.

  • For those of you still waiting for your free poster from Pulse!, looks like you might be out of luck. This is the response that Christian got when he asked them about his poster:
  • Hi,

Unfortunately Robert Smith was a lot more popular than we anticipated and we ran out of the 100 free posters right away. While I can confirm that I received your request, I cannot confirm whether your request was submitted early enough to receive a poster before we ran out. The last batch of posters were sent out two weeks ago, so unless you receive a poster in the mail within the next couple of days, I think it would be safe for me to say that your request was not submitted in time. I am truly sorry and I hope that some time in the near future we will feature another band that you would like to receive a poster of.

    Sorry,

  • "before work every morning i watch WGN Morning News (channel nine in Chicago)... and to my surprise as the background of most of their segments they played various bits of 'standing on a beach: the singles'. my mom came in my room shouting, "honey, they're playing 'the walk'!" (her favorite song). weird."

"on wgn tv morning news show in chicago, the song the walk was played going into a commercial break. you even got to hear robert sing a few words. it was at 8:43 am."

    (Thanks Allah and VGMINC62)

"Monday night on VH1's show The List, the category was best male vocalist. Of course Robert wasn't mentioned at all by any of the lame quasi-celebrities they had on that panel. However I am pleased to report that in the beginning sequence of the show where they ask people off the street their opinions, Robert was named by a guy they asked. As he gave his answer and why he chose it they showed about 10 seconds of a Cure video. "

    (Thanks Beachy)

Sunday 16.04.2000.: At 10H30, on TF1's program 'Auto Moto' (motorsports program), the background music played while they asked the questions for their competition was 'The Last Day Of Summer'. "

  • Some good news for New York fans - it now appears that the Jones Beach website was wrong, and No Doubt/Lit/Black Eyed Peas will NOT be opening the Cure show. Those bands ARE touring together and WILL be at Jones Beach, but that show will be on June 19th, not the 20th.

  • More info on the Prague suicide story from the Czech newspaper "Mlada Fronta DNES" (April 14th, 2000):
  • POLICEMAN SHOT HIMSELF DURING THE CONCERT

Prague(pdk) - 24 years old policeman, member of order-keeping unit, shot himself during the Wednesday concert of british rock band The Cure on toilets on the second gallery of Paegas Arena in Prague. "The policeman was on duty at the concert -- he was responsible for keeping order in the hall. It is confirmed, that he really committed suicide, however, the motive is not known yet.", said the prague police spokeperson Eva Miklikova and added, that the concert was not affected at all by this accident.

    (Thanks Radek)

Unfortunately, the story also made it onto the Howard Stern radio show today:

"Robin Quivers just did the news on howard stern at 10:15am today and did a report on the suicide at the cure show! In typical stern fashion robin reported the story seriously while howard and co. made fun ~ howard said it was a great way to kick off the tour, that they should change the dream tour name, the cure didn't cure him, went to see the cure and couldn't find a cure, and some cure he found & shotgun sound effects and then played blink 182's adam song."

    (Thanks HoldingMercury and Veronica)

  • Some bad news for fans going to the Jones Beach show. According to the Jones Beach website, not only will there be an opening band, but there will be 3 - No Doubt, Lit and Black Eyed Peas. This only affects the NY show, and as far as I know, they will not be opening any other shows. Also, this could just be an error by Jones Beach.
  • Update: This seems to be an error by Jones Beach.

  • More media reports on the tragic suicide story:
  • Q:

Man shoots himself at Cure gig [Apr 17 2000 3:09PM]

A man died last week during The Cure's performance at Prague's Sports Hall, where the band was playing as part of their European tour to promote the Bloodflowers album.

The man, a policeman, was found shot dead in the toilet of the venue, and is believed to have committed suicide though reports say no note was found at the scene. Speaking to the NME, a spokesman for the band said that the band were not aware of the incident until after the concert. He is thought to have died approximately halfway through the show.

    Spin:

Fan Commits Suicide At Cure Show

An as yet unnamed, 24 year old Cure fan committed suicide at a recent Cure concert in Prague. According to the NME, the fan, an off-duty policeman, shot himself in the head in the men's room of the city's Sport's Hall on Wednesday (April 12) while Robert Smith and company were onstage. The Cure, who are touring Europe on their Dream Tour 2000 (it hits the States in late Spring) in support of their most recent release, Bloodflowers, were neither aware, nor involved in the incident. This marks the second time a fan has killed himself at one of the goth legends' shows. If you read the band's oral history in the March 2000 Spin, you'll recall a Los Angeles-based fan stabbed himself to death at a 1986 show at the Forum.

  • Curespotting:
  • "Yesterday evening (Saturday) the Dutch broadcasting company KRO broadcasted two songs from the Werchter 1981 concert (Funeral Party & A Forest, with the notorious "Fuck Robert Palmer, Fuck Rock & Roll' comment). The KRO has recorded quite a number of concerts from 1979, 1980, 1981 & 1984. Once in a while they broadcast a few bits and pieces in a show called Leidsekade Live."

    (Thanks Hans)

"Every sunday morning, on Radio 21 in Belgium, there are two hours of "Rock Classics", with mainly songs of the seventies like Deep Purple, Led Zepplin, ... Yesterday, the program finished with a song of the Sisters Of Mercy (first good news) and with From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea of The Cure. Well it seems that The Cure begins to be a classic rock band !

    (Thanks Yves)

"I was at a bar called Sloppy Joe's in Irvine CA on saturday night and there was a cover band called "Van Gogh's Ear" who played curent hits. In their second set of the evening, they played a version of "Just Like Heaven", as I watched the crowd, most people really got into it, and sang along, and the dance floor got a little more crowded."

  • Here's a report on the MTV Russia Cure special:
  • "MTV-Russia just showed a programm, dedicated to The Cure. During the programm the following videos were shown: "Lovecats", "Close to me" (Mixed Up version) "Boys Don't Cry" (from MTV Unplugged), "Friday I'm Love", "Inbetween Days" and "Why Can't I Be You". The VJ (her name is Tanja and she has a tattoo on her left hand, made in "Wish" style) called The Cure as "the last romantics of the 20th century" and Robert Smith as a "genious and outstanding". Also during the breaks between videos, the VJ pronounced phrases from the Cure songs such as Bloodflowers, A Few Hours After This and The Last Day Of Summer, and also she spoke a lot about Albert Camus and his influence to Robert. The programm was about 30 min."

  • There is a new Cure Tribute cd called "One Thousand Screaming Children" being put together by Ballyhoo Withdrawal records. Here's some info on the record label and the Cure project:
  • "Ballyhoo Withdrawal is a newly reformed record label. We used to be a strictly hardcore, straight edge, and punk rock label. Now we are still politically motivated, but we are attempting to release other types of music.

Our current project is "One Thousand Screaming Children", a tribute to the Cure. So far the bands and songs we have received are great.

This release is also intended to be a benefit or a means to raise funds for a charity. We are still waiting to hear back from some organizations. Hopefully, I will have confirmation shortly. I'll let you know.

We plan on releasing the tribute in June 2000. However, this is beginning to look unlikely. The cd release is scheduled to coincide with the release of our clothing company's debut summer line. The name of the company is stiner.estes.

The clothing is similar to what you might find in the gap or urban outfitters, except that we are more issue oriented than these companies. Our goal is integrate ethical practices in the fashion industry. Our clothes will contain no animal products, and the least environmentally destructive materials. We also refuse to use sweatshop labor and other inhumane practices.

The debut of stiner.estes will also be the release of the cure tribute. Some of the bands will play the event, model some of the clothes, and have a good time. In addition to the rock and rollers, we will also have models modeling the clothes and it should be one festive event. I'll keep you posted on the details.

    The 3 song promo cd contains these songs - 1)Level...Lovesong, 2)the Lollipop Guild...Six Different Ways, 3) Daryl...Boys Don't Cry.

If you would like to join their mailing list, you can do so by sending an e-mail to curekids@yahoo.com.

    (Thanks Burt & Chris)

  • A very sad story has emerged from the Prague show on April 12th. Apparently a 24 year old police officer entered the bathroom of the Prague Sports Hall and committed suicide. We received this story early this morning, but didn't want to run it until we had some verification. Unfortunately, it turned out to be true. Our thoughts and prayers are with the man's family and friends.
  • Here are the original report we received and the story as reported by NME:

"There is a news report from the Cure's Prague concert. It says that during the concert a 24 year old police man commited suicide and repeats all the news about the band singing mostly about suicides and getting old."

    (Thanks Axel)

    From NME:

    CURE CONCERT SUICIDE SHOCK

A policeman committed suicide in the middle of THE CURE's performance in PRAGUE last Wednesday (April 12). Reports from the show claim a 24-year-old man was found dead in the toilet of the Prague Sports Hall on April 12, where the band were playing the first Czech date of their current European tour. He had shot himself. No letter or suicide note was found near the body.

A spokesperson for The Cure told nme.com that the band were totally unaware of the incident. One fan told nme.com that the band played a set consisting mainly of material from their latest album 'Bloodflowers', and the incident at the show passed "largely unnoticed". He added the mood of the concert was "gloomy" throughout.

The Cure are currently in the middle of their 'Dream Tour 2000', which is due to return to the UK when the band play London Wembley Arena on April 22. They released their 13th studio album, 'Bloodflowers', on Valentines Day this year through Polydor.

  • Here's an update on how tickets are selling in Europe:
  • "I've called Mojo Concerts, the Dutch Organizer of the Cure Concert in Rotterdam. The show in Ahoy is almost sold out. There are yet only 200 tickets available."

    (Thanks Mark)

"Up till now, about 80% of the 28,000 seats available for the 3 dates of the Italian Dream Tour have been sold.

    (Thanks Fed)

  • Here's a look at Robert on the cover of Request magazine.

  • Curespotting:
  • "At Jack Off Jill's concert on Monday at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, they performed their cover of Lovesong. Apparently, they started by asking "Does anyone like the Cure?" When the response was largely negative (different genres of music I guess) they replied "Too fucking bad" and launched into their cover."

    (Thanks Redprints)

"At the clothing store where I work STRUCTURE, on the Tape that is played for four hours, the company put Maybe Someday on it. Cool huh?. Next time you're in there buying clothes keep an ear out for it."

    (Thanks Andy)

"Yesterday I was watching Studio Sport, the biggest Sport TV program in Holland. They showed a commercial of the forthcoming Sportevents this weekend with background music of Watching me fall!"

  • From MTV News:
  • Cure On "Bloodflowers" Role In Album Trilogy

The Cure is halfway through the European leg of its "Dream Tour 2000," an outing that will arrive in the U.S. next month for a five-week run of mostly amphitheaters, beginning on May 18 in Atlanta.

The group's newest album, "Bloodflowers," is continuing to dominate college radio here in the States, as the record is currently in the top five of both the "CMJ" Top 200 album and Core Radio charts.

Prior to the release of "Bloodflowers," Cure frontman Robert Smith talked about how the record formed a trilogy of sorts with two of the band's earlier records, 1982's "Pornography" and 1989's "Disintegration," a point he expounded upon during an interview with the MTV Radio Network.

"It's slightly disingenuous, me having said that," Smith explained. "Certainly when I made 'Pornography,' I had no intention of it being part one of an emotional trilogy, and 'Bloodflowers' exists as an album. You don't have to have any awareness of 'Pornography' or 'Disintegration' to enjoy or to get something out of 'Bloodflowers.'

"In the true sense of it being a trilogy, it's a lie, as the third part of a trilogy necessitates you being aware of the first two parts to have any idea of what's going on in the third part. I think why I said it was that within the group, I wanted the others to have a sense of what I wanted to make.

"In my own mind there was this emotional trilogy that was 'Pornography,' 'Disintegration,' and this album that we were going to make," Smith continued. "And I used those two albums as references and touchstones in the studio for the sounds and the kind of emotional content that is in those two records.

"Having said that, they do work really well, the three of them back-to-back, if you've got three hours to spare. But 'Bloodflowers' exists on its own as an album." [RealAudio]

The Cure has contributed a remix of "Watching Me Fall," a new cut from "Bloodflowers," to the recently reissued "American Psycho" soundtrack (see "Huey Lewis Pulls Song From 'American Psycho'"), while DJ guru Paul Oakenfold has completed a remix of the Cure's "Out Of This World."

  • We have more info on the Polish promo single for 'Maybe Someday":
  • "I talked to a guy from the polish division of universal yesterday and here's what he told me: "Maybe someday" promo single was released especially because of the polish concert and there were only 230 singles pressed."

    (Thanks Maciek)

  • We haven't really mentioned much about the summer festival shows until now due to a lack of credible information. However, we have decided to go ahead and list what we've heard so far and ask for help in confirming or denying these rumors:
  • June 24th - "Festival de la Jeunesse" in Vitry-sur-Seine, near Paris. We can not find any info on this.

June 25th - Somerset, England (Glastonbury Festival) They are rumored to be playing before David Bowie (who is also only rumored to be appearing). Update: Bowie has just been confirmed, but nothing on The Cure yet.

June 29th - July 1st - Roskilde, Denmark (Roskilde Festival) While the date for this show hasn't been announced yet, it seems very likely that this one is true, as The Cure are listed on the official website.

July 2nd - Werchter, Belgium (Werchter Festival) This one is confirmed. The Cure will headline and be preceeded by Pearl Jam, Paul Weller, Counting Crows, Soulwax, Anouk, Asian Dub Foundation and Heideroosjes.

July - Athens,Greece (Athens Rockwave Festival) It has been mentioned in magazines, newspapers and on a music show on TV called 'Jammin'.

July 25th-30th - Nyon, Switzerland (Paleo Festival) This was reported in the 24 heures newspaper in Switzerland. I think they are releasing their schedule on April 25th.

July 28-30 - Japan (Fuji Rock Festival) The organizers have said that it was a possibility and they were in negotiations with the band.

August 5th - Budapest, Hungary (Pepsi Sziget festival) We know this festival is happening and that a band named VÄRTTINÄ are playing, but that is all we have been able to find out.

We want to stress that these shows are simply rumors (with the exception of Roskilde & Werchter) and ARE NOT CONFIRMED! In most cases, it will probably turn out to be wishful thinking on the promoters part. If you have any info on these dates which can help confirm or deny these rumors, please let us know.

  • More tickets have been released for the Las Vegas show! Also, they have reduced the ticket limit from 8 to 4. Good luck!
  • (Thanks Kristi and Simon)

  • Here's some info on the technical side of the Dream Tour from the Lighting Newswire (a mail list for the stage lighting industry):
  • "Just recently confirmed, LSD (Lighting & Stage Design) will be servicing the latest tour by The Cure. Rehearsals start next week for an outing that kicks off in Spain on the 27th of March. Abbey Rosen Holmes is the lighting designer, with a less elaborate stage set than of late, but with extensive use of large- format projectors. Her rig is founded on 30 Icons, 36 VL5s, all controlled from an Icon console. The only UK date is Wembley Arena on the 22nd of April. "

And there is a really fascinating article about The Swing Tour's lighting and stage design at: http://www.etecnyc.net/tci/issues/11_96_9.htm

  • Curespotting:
  • "Sunday night on MSNBC Fascination Street was used as the incidental music in a story a story about teenage heroin use in Plano, Texas. The footage was apparently shot by a young girl who was involved as well. The images were quite explicit, showing actual injections of the drug. I guess somebody at NBC really loves the Cure, cause I constantly seem to be catching Curetunes being used in these stories on their news shows."

    (Thanks Beachy)

"I was watching the opening teasers for Dateline Wednesday, and they were playing "Burn" as a bed for a piece about believe it or not, Whitney Houston!!?!?!?!?? "

  • Elektra has released a new promo cd in the US for 'Out of This World'. Here's the track list:
  • 1. Edit 4:44
    2. LP Version 6:43
    3. Call-out hook

The cd cover just has a sticker with the U.S. tour dates on it. It's great that they've decided to issue another promo, but too bad Elektra didn't include some new mixes on it. Those 'Maybe Someday' remixes from Poland are great!

Anyway, get ready to use the Support the Singles page again and make sure your local station plays it.

    (Thanks Brian)

  • I finally found out who's to blame for the American Psycho soundtrack being recalled.....Huey Lewis! Huey didn't approve of the graphic violence in the film and asked that his song (Hip To Be Square) be removed from the album. The soundtrack is now scheduled for re-release on April 18th. So if you've got a copy of the original release, I guess you've got something to go auction off on ebay. : )

    From N.M.E. :

Younger Younger 28's In Between Days (V2)

Here's some messy disinterring by tiresomely arch pop culture bandits Younger Younger 28's. Previously known for their cold-eyed 'fags and lippy' attitude to everything, this cover of one of The Cure's poppiest moments finds them unexpectedly loving, like a teenage mum comforting a toddler with a scraped knee.

    (Thanks Simon)

"In this months (May) Uncut magazine there's a review of The Younger Younger 28's new album which fratures a cover of 'In between days':

Younger Younger 28's Soap V2 (star rating 3/5)

Droll debut from urban mythologists Gift-wrapping the hope-free England previously sighted by the Human League and Pulp in poppy disco frills, the YY28's - as we should probably call them - wring smiles from sullen, small town scenarios, the characters in their grim vignettes are instantly recognisable: There's the "girl from suburbia, waiting for someone to discover her" of "Next big thing" ; "Julie" who "wears her hair upcos her spirit's down" and naive Viz vixen "Teenage mum" , who claims " That's right, I use my sex as a weapon"... It's a shame the male vocals so closely echo Phil Oakey's lugubrious baritone, but the girls have real pizazz, and slick production keeps the bitter sociology palatable, Inexplicably, the foursome cover The Cure's "In Betwen Days" (as their new single), thus veiling their unique charm, but the rest of the street opera that is soap is worth getting into a lather about. Chris Roberts "

    (Thanks Steven)

  • Curespotting:
  • "excerpt from an interview w/ no doubt in the friday show section of the Orange county register (Southern CA):

"Return of Saturn," which skips so much of No Doubt's signature ska-pop sound for missing Persons and Cure cues that might as well be called " Return of the 80's."

"i would be really happy if we could be the Cure, Part Two," chirps singer Gwen Stefani

"It's really interesting that (the Cure's recently released Bloodflowers) is the third of a trilogy, because Return of Saturn is the fourth of our octology," says bassist Tony Kanal "There's eight records we're doing here"."

"Today, at 1:40 p.m. I saw a commercial on french tv Canal + for... 'Staring at the Sea' !!! This was the first time I saw a commercial for this album, 14 years after it was released... I wonder if Universal France ever eared the name of Bloodflowers."

    (Thanks Pierre)

"On friday the 7th of april there was a review of the movie Boys don't cry in the main news paper of Helsinki, Finland. On the top of the review there was this line from Cure's Boys don't cry: "I try to laugh about it / hiding the tears in my eyes / because boy's don't cry." "

"Wanted to let you know that in LA tonight, Maynard, the lead singer of tool's side project band, A PERFECT CIRCLE played a secret show at the Key Club. About half way into the show, they staretd to play a song, and at first I thought it sounded like a Cure-type song, after I had said that to my friend, I heard the lyrics to LOVE SONG, and I about flipped. The song was totally redone, heavy, soft, very dynamic. It made the show even better. Good to see the Cure's influence everywhere. I recommend this band highly...www.aperfectcircle.com."

"On our local radio station, 94.5 the Edge, they were getting people's favorite song or album for making love to. And the Dj said for him, if you take out the pop songs, The Cure's entire Disintigration album. Thought that was interesting."

  • Terra.es has posted the 5 video clips from their webcast of the 1st night in Madrid. The songs available are Out Of This World, Watching Me fall, Want, Fascination St. and Open.

  • Amazon.com has a 30 second sample of the remixed "Watching Me Fall" from the American Psycho soundtrack. The cd was supposed to be released yesterday (and many stores did receive them), but they have been recalled due to a licensing or credits problem I believe, and will be officially re-released next tuesday (April 11th).

  • Due to the great success of the polish promo single for 'Last Day of Summer', Universal Poland has just released a brand new promo single for 'Maybe Someday'. Here's a report:
  • "The cd looks like this: all snow-white. on the left side there is a cure logo (just like the one on the BF cover). in the center - 'the cure - maybe someday' then all of the remixes names. below in polish - 'muz. i sl. Robert Smith' (music and words RS), below in polish - 'z albumu Bloodflowers' (from BF album). plus there are symbols of fiction and universal poland.

    And here's the tracklist:

    radio edit 3'58

    hybrid mix radio edit 3'37

    dance mix 4'55

    acoustic mix 4'59

i've just listened to it and must say it is awesome. acoustic mix is so beautiful!"

    (Thanks Maciek)

  • And the Cure broadcast on Viva 2 has been confirmed, even though we still don't know exactly what they will show:
  • "Well, I know now that Viva 2 will broadcast "Overdrive: The Cure" for several times:

Saturday, April 8th, 8:00 pm CET.
Sunday, April 9th, 4:00 am CET.
Sunday, April 9th, 1:00 pm CET.
Monday, April 10th, 3:00 am CET.

"Overdrive" is a weekly show featuring live music of famous bands, but I still don't know if they'll show a concert of The Cure or any other Cure-related stuff. It's probably not a livecast from Stuttgart. This is what I thought (hoped) first, but "Overdrive" as well as the show in Stuttgart officially begin at 8:00 pm and I don't think that The Cure will start playing on time (...smile...)."

  • So the first week of the Dream Tour has finished and I think there is only one word to sum it up - Amazing! How could you not be impressed by those setlists? Wow! Thanks to all of the great Spanish, French and German fans who helped us with the setlists, soundcheck info and reviews. Now the tour moves on to France, Switzerland and Germany for what I'm sure will be even more incredible shows. And who knows what songs might get played by this time next week!

  • Not sure if this is new or not but Elektra has posted a bunch of new photos on their Cure site.

  • The Cure live on Viva 2? :
  • "According to the current issue of the WOM magazine, the German music-channel VIVA 2 will broadcast one hour of The Cure live at 08:00 pm European Time on April 8th and at 01:00 pm on April 9th. I don't know if this information is right and which concert VIVA 2 will broadcast. I don't have cable-TV, so I can't get further information. Sorry, but maybe someone else knows more about that.

"Mellissa Auf Der Mer While talking about being a smashing pumpkin mentions the cure"

MOST OF THESE SONGS ARE VERY EMOTIONAL. NEVER MIND JUST PLAYING THE NOTES, THE PERSONAL INVESTMENT MUST BE CONSIDERABLE AS WELL:

"That is very true. Obviously I've been a big fan of the band since before GISH, and I've followed the career and the albums of this band very closely. Being a girl who first fell in love with THE SMITHS and THE CURE and TEARS FOR FEARS, I realised I've always liked the melancholy music"

This is from wall of sound. "

"Just bought our tickets yesterday for the New Orleans show and was excited to hear Lovecats playing yesterday at Lakeside Mall"

"I was listening to Mancow (morning radio talk show host) on my way to work this morning and the Smashing Pumpkins were the guests. The current discussion was the Pumpkins new album and tour. They said they had no band as their opening act. Billy Corgan was asked what band he would like to tour with. His response was the Cure. Mancow asked him his opinion of the new album and Billy said he liked it. He didn't rank it the best album but ranked it as up there with some of the greats."
