Show was 2 hours & 48 minutes
(Thanks Ronald and Gert-Jan)
maybe a reason of why they didnt came back
a third time: during Bloodflowers a drunk (?) guy was screaming all
kinds of abuse to Robert's head. "fuck off
robert, come on, play some real music, you motherfucker" is one of
the lines i remember. he was standing right
in front of robert behind 3 or 4 people. robert heard him for sure, in
the end he smiled to him. people around him
where really pissed and in the end threw him over the fence. he was
back in two minutes but apparently he liked
the encores 'cause i didnt hear him anymore. this, plus the guy who
was almost dragged out by the security after
3 songs because he was constantly being very very annoying to the
people around him, makes me think that the
crowd was only good in general. i can imagine the band didnt have
such a good impression of the public.
For someone who followed The Cure since 1981
it's allways a great experience to visit a concert of your favorites.
The Kiss and 100years, it's been said before,
were yesterday in the Ahoy' arena absolute highlights. The funny
way of walking around the stage during Plainsong
is a special treat of Robert. I remember at the Wish-concert
Robert walked around in The Ahoy' half-dressed
as an Icehockeyplayer, that was really impressive....for the girls!
Afterwards I was glad that i'll be visiting
the concerts in Paris, Milan and London. Hopefully Siamese Twins,
Drowning man en figurehead will be a part
of the setlist. I've three chances left. But the mixture of songs was
great. The songs of BF fit really good between
the old ones. May it be a sign for the future. I also read in OOR
that maybe (someday) in 2002 there will be
a new Cure-album/cd/dvd.
You know the setlist already so i won't give
that again... It was not sold out by a long shot especially in the first
and second ring there were lot's of empty
places.
The performance was tight and inspired. All
songs (except Inbetween Days) were played really well, some of
them reaching the point of perfectness: 100
years (what a version..), Disintegration (I thought I Robert was going
to sing his heart out, after such a version
another encore is just not possible! a shame in the way of missing
another encore tho:P), Sinking (perfect!),
Just like heaven, The Kiss (nice!!!) and a perfect version of Prayers for
Rain (which even got Robert extra applause
for the long RAAAAAAAAAAIIIINNNN).
I think the audience in general was really
good, tho a bit unsure what to expect in the beginning. No greatest
hits show (thanks!!!!!), but some people just
did not know what to expect.
The drums were really loud and a bit monotoneous
as well, I think based on this drumming one could make a
two hour mix of at least 75% of all the songs.
On the other hand, this way all songs fall together and old and new
just fit very well.
I could not help but feel some dualisme on
the part of The Cure/Robert. The general feel was one of being
inspired, tho at times his voice seemed to
be prone to his emotions (for example the kneeling on the speakers
during Plainsong).
All in all, a very good show, really much better
than in 1992. But it would not be a surprise to me if this was the
last tour.
The dream always ends...
I've very mixed emiotions of this gig. After
the first gig the audience went wild. Screaming, clapping. It was
fantastic. You could feel energy!!! With M,
Play for today, Just like heaven you could hear everyone singing. It
was disappointing that they played such a
slow songs at the second encore (There is no if, Trust ). "The light
went a little bit down".
I don't understand why they stopped after the
second encore. The audience was very very good! Everyone went
wild. The audience deserved more! I don't
understand because:
1) Ahoy was sold out (11.000 people) (A lot
of former shows weren't sold out)
2) The audience was totally in the concert.
3) The band played very well.
4) Robert and Simon were in a very good mood
(Robert laughing, Simon jumping)
5) Robert wanted to play a third encore.
Why they didn't? A lot of people I've spoken after the concert felt the same. Why?
Watching the total gig, watching Robert, Simon,
Perry looking to the audience I know for sure: This is the last
tour. This was the last time they played in
Holland. You could see they were saying goodbeye to everyone.
A good concert, but why this end???????
Something I want to add to the reviews below:
I think it's very obvious why the band didn't come back for the
third encore: Robert was pissed off cause'
they (read: Perry) screwed up 'Disintegration'!!
The first 2 minutes of the song Perry played
far too loud in the wrong tune!! Did nobody noticed that? That's
why Robert looked so damn miserable during
the begining of the song. Robert tried to save all by changing his
vocals, but that didn't work out quite well.
It was rather funny to see Perry played on with a 'Look-I'm-Jimi-Hendrix-Face'.
During the song they managed to get the whole thing right, but I think
Robert
wasn't in the mood anymore to do Siamese
Twins and Faith (as on the stagelist).
However, I enjoyed the gig very much, and
'The Kiss' was brilliant!!
What can I add to the already rather alot of
reviews from the Dutch audience (including myself) only I have lived
in London for the last 10 years. After
seeing the promo show at the Astoria I was very excited about the concert
last night at the Ahoy, as I normally go over
to Holland to see them, as I did in 1996 for the Swing Tour. Although
I had seen for 21 times (in 17 years), the
22nd was no disappointment. There was a really sweet French guy, shock
horror who has seen them 41 times (a dedicated
fan).
I think the Bloodflowers songs sound excellent
live, especially There is no if, and The loudest sound, which sound
so wonderfully different than on the album
of which Watching me Fall is my favourite, so powerfull "Watching me
Scream" and scream he still can (Robert that
is) only the man has got a little bigger and now really looks like the
Honey Puff Monster (you just want to cuddle
him, especially when he went over to both sides and just stood there).
I felt like going over to him and just
say that everything was OK, he looked so shy (but is he really).
The highlights for me where The Kiss, Snakepit
and M as I hadn't heard these for a long long time, but the only
disappointment for me was they didn't play
Faith, Siamese Twins, as they had played it a few times at the other
concerts (never mind) and also the fact that
those bloody aweful security people kept dragging you away if you
went downstairs to have a dance, my friend
got her hair pulled by someone who stood behind her because she
stood up where she was sitting (dancing not
allowed), but we got everyone around us to stand up and that solved
the problem (we felt great, as everyone else
got up as well). It was funny because the Spanish guys sitting
before us looked as they were going to see
Julio Iglesias, the way they were dressed. The audience was very
mixed, from Goths, to 12 and 45 year olds
which was nice to see.
Can someone of you explain what happened at
the end. Disintegration was the only song not played well at the
end and something was going on. You see if
Robert says "thank you" when they go off, you know that they
come back, only when he says "thank you goodnight"
you know it is the end, but this didn't happen, VERY
STRANGE!!!!!!.
Further I only wanted to say hello to Remco
and Vincent who we met in the Metro, it was their first time and
were very interested to meet two die
old Cure fans of 34, and we told them to expect something very
special, afterwards when we met up they had
absolutely loved it.
We think that the first part of the Rotterdam
Cure concert sounded a bit down. However, the Cure IS one of the
best bands in the world, which they proved
yesterday. From "Maybe Someday" on, the concert started to sound
more joyful. The first encore was one of the
best parts of the concert. Moreover, we both agreed that that part
was one of the best we have seen so far. The
second encore started a bit down again, but the end was again an
extraordinary performance.
Bob was Bob, as always, but he is one of the
most charismatic singers of the eighties and nineties, and he knows.
Lovely! We are looking forward to seeing them
at Werchter this summer. A pitty the Cure only did a showcase in
Belgium and not a DREAM TOUR concert.
The concert showed that the new songs are 'live'
even stronger than on the album Bloodflowers. '100 Years' was
impressive; with massive pictures of war victims
at the back of the stage. 20-year old songs like 'M', 'a Forest' &
'Play for Today' still sound very good. The
classical intro-music was beautiful.
Cure in Rotterdam was not just a concert; it was an Experience.
I was happy to read in the Dutch magazine 'OOR'
that Bloodflowers will not be the last Cure album. Robert will
work on one solo album. In 2002 the new Cure
album will be out. Let's hope we 'don't wish impossible things....!'
A night like this, I’ll always remember! This
concert really met all my (high) expectations. Arrived at Ahoy’ at
7.00 pm with 2 of my brothers and my girlfriend.
Collected my free tickets I got from Mojo Concerts. (Thanks
Danielle). And at 8.00 pm Ahoy’ was completely
filled up with people. I think it sold out. (10.000 people) I was
very exited and when the violins started
I got even more exited. Our view of the stage was perfect, only 10
rows before us. Band came on stage, crowd
went wild. Although Out of this world is not my favorite song from the
Bloodflowers album, it was an impressive start.
Watching me fall, brilliant. People starting close up on me, not
much space left around me and the temperature
was getting really really hot. Fascination street, powerfull.
Want: aahhhhhhhhh! Almost cried, went to the
side a bit because I couldn’t feel my hands anymore
(hyperventilation sucks you know), but still
had a very good view of the stage, thank god (or more likely: my
mother and father) I’m tall. There was more
fresh air in this spot. My favourites of the first set are, the Kiss
(never heard that one live before), The edge
of the deep green sea, beautiful. Sinking, 100 years (best version
ever) and Bloodflowers. The only song
that made no impression at all was End. I already read that on the
internet but I thought: hey, how bad can it
be? But they were right, the “Show” version of this song, is much
much better.
The first encore. M: I really wanted them
to play that one and it turned out o.k. It was followed by Play for
today
(what a surprise…) which made the crowd go
wild. Just like heaven was nice as allways. And you just can’t go
wrong with A forest.
The second encore: There is no if, Trust.
Very nice atmosphere. At this time my irritation with some people
nearby grew out of proportion. You wonder
why people go to concerts in the first place. They are just talking to
each other all the time, walking back and
forth to get more beer, more beer, more beer and then some more. In
Holland we call them “Boeren”. They should
just ban them from concerts! Who is with me on this? Then they
played Plainsong and ended with Disintegration.
A very powerfull song, played loud and intensive, gave me
goosebumps. Sadly, no third encore.
Then we were driven like cattle out of the
Ahoy’, all bars closed and all 10.000 of us had to exit Ahoy’ through
the same door at the same time. Really horrible.
Never will I go to Ahoy’ again, I’ve hated it all my life, being
in the middle of nowhere and such, but there
is just no fun in being there.
The crowd, with a few exceptions, clapping
and singing along with almost every song, real good atmosphere. The
lightshow was great and the band was in very
good mood. I’ve never seen Robert smiling and walking the stage
as much as he did last night. His singing
was also very good, he was really into it. Simon and Perry were also
very vivid, and 0Jason kicked ass.
I’m looking forward to seeing them at the
Werchter festival in Belgium. I guess the Cure is a band you just
could see over and over again, and again and
again…
My first reactions to this fantastic show:
the band sounded tight and inspired. They sometimes even smiled!
Unfortunately they didn't change the setlist
that much. Prtty much the same as in Hamburg. Great light show
(especially during 100 years and Forest).
M started with a big red "M" on the screen and the audience went
wild. During Sinking we could see Robert's
face on the big screen via a small camera next to his microphone.
The version of A forest was a bit too short
in my opinion: no improvisation at the end.
I expected Faith to be 3rd encore, but they
didn't play it. Why? The audience really deserved it! I don't think
this was the right ending for a brilliant
concert.
Review by Yoon
Well, What can I say? It was such a brilliant
show not because i had been waiting to see the cure for so long
(over a decade) but overall I have to give
some credit to the cure for their efforts and genuinely birlliant
performance.
I've read about someones' review on last night's
gig and i don't fully agree with what he said. Bob and his Co.
enjoyed the gig. Lots of smilie on bob's
face and he even poised for a moment to stare at the audience in the
corner where I sat!!! What a lovely
blok!!! Travelling all the way from Amsterdam to see them was
more than
worth.
I don't know if the band was not quite happy
during the gig athough there was hardly any talk between the
members during the gig. Overall Bob , I
think, enjoyed the gig and so does the audience. (I'm not quite sure if
Bob was a bit pissed off with something as
all I could see was his rather big ass from my seat for about 30
minutes!! Unfortunately I left it too long
before I bought the ticket and got a terrible seat!. )
The setlist was pretty well choosen a mixture
of their oldies and new tracks, although I was expecting them to
play a couple of B-side tracks. Another
thing worth mentioning is that the drum was a bit overpowering
lastnight. I saw Bob and Roger putting their
hands on the ears at times.
I hope everyone enjoyed the show last night like I did.
i just got home from the concert. i was a bit
affraid to see a "static" band, after i read the hamburg reviews, but i
didn`t see any statues ;)
they all seemed quite happy, everyone was
smiling a lot and giving signs to each other, they seemed to enjoy the
concert. the setlist was almost the same as
in hamburg. no shake dog shake, and siamese twins, but we got the
snakepit instead. no 3 encores. the same as
in hamburg, but without faith, unfortunately.
in the intro and outro of plainsong robert
went to the sides of the stage and kinda climbed on the speakers to look
at the audience. they all started screaming
and waving, but robert just stood there, being a bit shy, like we know
him. it was really funny :)
at the encores the crowd got very excited
and started dancing and such, i didn`t see such a happy and dancing
cure-audience for a long time (last time was
in the wish tour i think) everyone was jumping, clapping hands,
it was really great. i had the best time :)
during disintegration i saw robert saying
"the motherfuckers laugh" or "the motherfucker is laughing" or
something like that. i really wonder what
he was talking about... he didn`t really say it to someone, but he
got pissed about something i guess... after
disintegration, the roadies were preparing things for a 3rd encore but
i
could see from roberts face that they wouldn`t
return. he stayed on stage as last one, came back to the microphone
to say "thank you very much" (the usual stuff)
he doubted, went away, came back to look at the audience and went
away.
i liked the lightshow, but i was in the front
row, so i couldn`t really get an overview of it. i think i`ll stay a bit
more
at the back tomorrow in lille.
