  • The Cure have won their court case (from CDNow/Allstar news) :
  • The Cure Assault Case Ruling Overturned

    May 24, 1999, 3:20 pm PT

The Cure, who lost a lawsuit in Orange County, Calif. Superior Court in February, recently saw that ruling overturned on May 6 after a Judge declared the verdict unenforceable due to the band's inability to mount a defense.

The Cure were sued by a fan in 1996 who claimed he had been assaulted by a bodyguard after seeking an autograph at the band's hotel during the Cure's Swing tour. The original verdict, given in absentia, was overruled after a judge learned that the band was never served papers properly regarding the suit and unaware of the case prior to the verdict.

In the meantime, the band is still holed up in a London studio recording the follow-up to 1996's Wild Mood Swings. According to the band's publicist, Michael Pagnotta of Reach Media, that album should surface by the end of the year.

  • For those of you who wanted more info on the Argentinian Cure Tribute Album, here you go:
  • "The website for the Argentinian Cure Tribute album is up and running!

Check it out: there's info on the album, very nice graphics, real audio files to download and the possibility to order it online.

    The address is: http://usuarios.interar.com.ar/german/intoaseaofcure/home.html

    For contacts, e-mail intoaseaofcure@interar.com.ar"

I want to thank Flor & German for sending me an advance promo copy of the album and to congratulate them and thank them for all of their hard work in producing a wonderful tribute. Everyone should at least go to their website and listen to the Real Audio samples. It might not be to everyone's liking, but I enjoyed it. Favorite tracks include "Just Like Heaven" by Brixton Crenchy ( a strange & wonderful Industrial/Techno/Dreampop concoction), "The Lovecats" by Grand Prix (which is mixed together with Elvis Costello's "Watching the Detectives - and it works brilliantly!), a very sweet version of "Friday I'm in Love" by Bristol, "Inbetween Days" by Plaimobyl, and "Boys Don't Cry" by Planeta Rica. There are only a couple of songs that I didn't care for, but that's mainly because of my taste in music. So go to the website, check out the samples and then decide for yourself.

  • A couple of Cure mentions in recent magazines:
  • "John Frusciante, guitarist for the RHCP, metioned the Cure in Guitar World Mag. on page 202 in the July issue. He says, "I put a little thing on that (refering to the opening track) with this synthesizer I have at my house. I tried to get the sound I hear on some Cure records."

"Also, in GQ with Mike Myers on the cover, a pic of Robert is used in an article entitled The History of Rock & Roll hair. They refer to him as "the guy from the Cure"."

  • From Record Collector Magazine (June 1999 issue):
  • The Cure - Who's got the Cure?

The Cure are likely to have their original fiction albums from the 1980's remastered with additional tracks in the foreseeable future - If main man Robert Smith can get round it it. Smith said in the band's latest fanclub newsletter: "The early albums will be re-mastered and have a few pertinent extra tracks, but i'm fussy about what goes where, so i'm not exactly sure when this will all happen..." He assured readers that "Faith" album would include the soundtrack to 'Carnage Visors, the animated film that appeared in lieu of a support act on the band's 1981 tour. When questioned as to whether any more demos, live tracks and radio sessions would be issued, Smith replied: "Why? i think Show and Paris are fantastic live albums that piss all over 99% of any Cure live bootlegs, and they are always on the verge of being deleted by Polygram due to lack of interest.. As i don't care one way or the other. I don't really see too much point in becoming involved..."

Nevertheless, some songs recorded for various John Peel and Kid Jenson radio shows remain unheard, particularly 1979's anti-Paul Morley tirade, "Desperate Journalist", and "Ariel" from 1982. A Fiction spokesperson said that at the moment the group were more interested in releasing new product, namely The Cure's 11th studio album, which is currently being recorded and will probably see the light of day around September.

  • The German radio station WDREinsLive will repeat The Cure's performance at last year's Bizarre Festival on the 26th of May. The show is called 'Kult und Chaos' in which the radio station broadcasts concerts each Tuesday. Normally, the show is no longer than an hour, so I believe, that they will 'only' broadcast an excerpt of the concert.

  • The Cure are mentioned in a AP review of the new Cranberries album:
  • `Bury The Hatchet'' (Island) -- The Cranberries.

``So much for the radio, everybody sounds the same,'' The Cranberries' Delores O'Riordan complains on her band's newest release, ``Bury the Hatchet.'' The song, ``Copycat,'' must be intended to be tongue in cheek because other tunes here are sprinkled with the sounds of The Cure and 10,000 Maniacs. On ``Saving Grace'' the Irish rock quartet even comes dangerously close to lifting a melody from 1970s soft rockers Bread, no less.

Still, it is hard to hate the Cranberries even in their hypocrisy. They are pop's play-it-safe band with a bubbly style that hasn't changed much through four releases. The Cranberries can simply blend into the background at any department store's junior section. ``Bury the Hatchet'' does offer the complementary rocker ``Promises,'' but it mostly bounces behind shimmering guitars and O'Riordan's Celtic dialect. The disc stutters out of the gate, mostly because of O'Riordan's silly lyrics, but gets better with the best songs at the tail end.

After showing some promise earlier this decade with forceful songs like ``Zombie,'' it is time the Cranberries were taken for what they're worth and nothing more: easy listening.

By John Pacenti, Associated Press Writer.

  • And a correction to a story from last week, Boris Williams turned 47 (not 42) on April 24th.

  • May 2nd

  • First up, a report on the ARTE special that aired on April 30:
  • "The TV channel Arte just showed something about The Cure. Here is what it was about: The TV channel 'Arte' (a French/German culture channel) aired a 5-minute-special about The Cure in their show 'Tracks' on Friday. It was nothing new and interesting; just a retrospective about The Cure's career. Only old interviews and videos were shown and a voice finished this unnecessary 'special' with the words that The Cure are in the studio since January 1999, recording a new record, which should come out this summer."

  • And here's a mention of Robert in The Fiver:

  • THE FIVER
    http://www.footballunlimited.co.uk

Football Unlimited's tea-time take on the world of football

    In today's Fiver:
    Famous Fiver,
    Fab Fiver,
    and Financial Fiver.

    THE FAME GAME

In 400BC Thucydides said of fame: "The whole earth is the sepulchre of famous men." He was talking about the Peloponnesian war, but substitute the phrase "First Division" for "earth" and you have a phrase that rings as true today as it did 2,399 years ago.

Yesterday, following Coventry fan and Formula 1 team boss 'Fast' Eddie Jordan's induction into the Premier League's Hall of Fame, we asked you to tell us about the global uber-stars at your club. The response has been staggering (as has the Fiver's friendly postie under the load) and has revealed an interesting trend. Today, the Fiver is proud to present the first evidence of 'celebrity clusters' at First Division football clubs.

According to Matthew Farrand, QPR can claim Michael Nyman, the Clash's Mick Jones, Robert Smith of the Cure and Martin Amis among their supporters. (Jeremy Pounder adds that Phil Collins abandoned the Rs in favour of Spurs, which is a shame because with a drummer you could have had a nice little band going.)

Another cluster is in evidence at Burnley. The PM's spokesman Alastair Campbell, Johnny Briggs (Mike Baldwin from Corrie), weatherman John Kettley and former PM Ted Heath all frequent Turf Moor according to Alan Whitley. And it's the same story at Oxford United where apparently Timmy Mallett, Jim Rosenthal and Desmond Morris are all a bit jumpy going into the last few games of the season. (Interestingly, some contributors claimed Jordan is also a regular at the Manor Ground, casting doubt on his Sky Blue credentials. Concerned, the Fiver called the Jordan HQ at Silverstone, where Ken in the office was happy to confirm the boss only goes "because he lives in Oxford".)

But no club, north or south of the border, can claim a more resplendent star from the firmament of celebrity than Dundee United, whose number one supporter is none other than GMTV's Lorraine Kelly. Lorraine, who shares a sofa with known Man Utd fan Eammon 'where were you when they were shite?' Holmes, even went as far as to name her son after Craig Brewster, scorer of the only goal in the Tangerines' one and only Scottish Cup success in 1994.

And talking of clusters, it seems you have to be a football fan to have a chance of getting your behind onto the interview suite at GMTV: according to the press office Esther McVey, currently filling in for the pregnant Fiona Phillips, is a Liverpool supporter. The Fiver suspects they all have a kickabout during the ads.

    (Thanks Hugh)

  • And here's a mention of Robert Smith from the may issue of the UK men's magazine FHM:
  • "As you've might have heard 'Orgazmo', the film, has been released in the UK on Friday 9th of April. It has had quite a lot of promotion in the press here, (although the following extract is the only one that I've seen that mentions The Cure ). Here is something that I picked up in the May issue of the British edition of 'FHM' mens 'style' magazine. It is a one page interview with a picture of Trey Parker on the other page (spread!):

(Question) Did you get Natasha Henstridge to record a south park character for the same reasons ?

Trey Parker : It was because we wanted to do her. After the first two months of doing south park, the phone calls started rolling in from celebrities wanting to do voices. We were like, "Wow - we can meet anyone we want !" The only people we had to meet were Robert Smith from The Cure and Natasha Henstridge. When we knew Natasha was coming, it became a huge competition between us who was going to fuck her. We even went out and bought new clothes. But when she arrived she looked really frumpy and gabbed about her husband. We were so bummed."

    (Thanks Steven)

Franc says they look nothing like The Cure, and that he dressed up like them his entire freshman year and they look nothing like Robert Smith. They then show a bried shot of Robert and go on to other things.

    (Thanks Jason)

This from Sonicnet News, from an article about the new Smashing Pumpkins album:

"Abandoning the drum machines and keyboard textures of Adore, many of the new songs featured swirling and fiery solos from both guitarists and relied on melodic, dark cadences that recalled the early '80s new-wave music of the Cure and various Goth-influenced bands."

    (Thanks Devin & Dayna)

The Panel ( which consists of about 4 to 5 comedians plus or minus a celebrity, passing low key but funny comments on the news, sport and entertainment) were interviewing an aussie surfer who specializes in extreme surf and who appears doing his stuff in this new IMAC movie. Footage was shown with "Want" as the backing track of this surfer riding one of these gigantic waves!!! Awsome stuff..."

  • The wrong Number lyric sheet ended up going for $1,605!

  • Dave Martinez recently talked to Budgie (of The Creatures and Siouxsie & the Banshees) and was kind enough to pass it along to us:
  • "This is an exclusive interview to be published by THE PRAYER CLUB, the spanish Cure fanzine. This features Budgie, drummer for Siouxsie and The Banshees speaking about The Cure and Robert Smith. The Prayer Club is giving this short but intense interview to A Chain Of Flowers for two reasons. First is that our next issue won't be out until The Cure publishes their new record and second is that this one is the best Cure website ever done. Take it as a "thank you", Craig. This is it:

THE PRAYER CLUB: Well, Budgie first of all we'd like to know if you still have a relationship with Robert Smith from The Cure...

BUDGIE: No, I've never had a relationship with Robert Smith...

THE PRAYER CLUB: But we know Robert played with you for several months during the first eighties...

BUDGIE: Oh, yes, but I haven't seen him since...

THE PRAYER CLUB: Since he left the Banshees maybe?

    BUDGIE: Yes, I think so...or have I? Well, if I have, I can't remember...

THE PRAYER CLUB: What do you think about the line their last records has followed?

BUDGIE: I can't realy say because...I haven't heard about them. Well, I listened to some of their last singles, because their producer is the same that helped us doing Anima Animus (by The Creatures).

THE PRAYER CLUB: Do you mean Steve Lyon?

BUDGIE: Yes! But what I realy found very funny is that when we met Steve he had recently spent 6 months working with Robert Smith. And as you know, Robert is from Crawley. And Steve had got used to speaking in that strange accent. When he first started speaking I could not avoid thinking: What's happening? I must be speaking to Robert Smith. And during the whole album recording, whenever i heard him speaking, I thought it was Robert Smith. "

(Thanks to Dave Martinez. For more info about The Prayer Club, write to Dave at dim@arrakis.es)

And while we're on the subject of The Creatures, Biba has put up some great photos from their concert in Prague last week on the Cave of Black Ghosts website.

  • A band called Oleander have covered "Boys Don't Cry" om their new album "February Son" (Universal Records). Here's a description from Destin Berthelot: "It's quite bad. Imagine if Matchbox 20 had covered it, with lots of distortion guitar... Well, it's a little worse than that."
  • (Thanks Destin)

  • Looks like The Cure are pretty popular on the ice skating circuit:
  • "On the ABC skating program tonight (3-25-99) in the segment where they are talking about Alexi Yagudin(sp?), "This is a Lie" was playing in the background."

"I was watching the free skate of the women's portion of the World Figure Skating Championships on ABC on 3/27/99. During the short bio of Russian skater Maria Buterskaya, they played a couple clips of music. The first one was the intro to The Cure's "A Thousand Hours". It was about a minute in length. "

The show will be broadcast on 'ZDF', which is the 2nd German tv channel. The recording of that show will be in April or May. As soon as I'll receive any detailed information, I'll let you know."

"On their new cd 'Aftermath', BATTERY do a cover of "All Cats Are Grey"."
