Dead Sunday Concert
Review by Jan Christian Nehlsen
YES, folks, this was really IT.
the best gig of the tour i saw so far, never thought they'd top my
favorite -
the second night in new york - but they did...
never thought there would be more than two new songs for me - songs i hadn't
heard live before - after eight gigs...but there was....
some of the highlights coming up
i was in the second row and some guys next to me kept screaming for the
figurehead from the beginning, they also had it written on a piece of paper
and they showed it and robert, simon and perry saw it. so robert promised us
to play it when they started catch, he said - looking at us - "honestly we
gonna play that tonight". after catch roger went to the right side, to the
drums jason usually plays for lie. i hadn't seen that before and thought
"what's going on?"
then robert introduced the hanging garden, my first new song. the second new
one followed right after that, robert said "i've written a song 15 years
ago. does anyone know the name?" it was the funeral party.i can hardly say
what i felt, it was that BIG feeling only the cure can give you. cockatoos
and figurehead - robert sang "i can lose myself in chinese art and GERMAN
girls".
but then it became simply incredible...
they appeared for the first encore and robert said something like "wait, i
have to get my coat", he took his mouth-organ and they played subway
song............
ahhhhhhh that was heaven and it was my third new song followed by the
fourth, grinding halt and the crowd went really wild for the first time.
but the second encore was even bigger....
good to hear m again followed by a BRILLIANT version of the drowning man -
robert couldn't stop singing "breathing like the drowning man.... dreaming
like the drowning man.............."
oh what can i say.........................
after that they did my new song number five and most likely the most
unbelievable song of the night, it came really absolutely totally unexpected
for me, because they did not play it before on this tour, i think...........
IN YOUR HOUSE................
...............................................................
they finished with an absolutely amazing 15 minute version of a forest with
simon pushing his bass REALLY hard at the end and throwing it onto the
stage.
again they had played more than two and a half hour, they were in a good
mood this night, simon kept looking at us and smiling and you could see
roger headbanging to a forest, robert did much talking and i think he played
the first few notes of jumping someone elses train before they started m.
like i said this has been my best gig so far - forget about new york or
paris bercy - and i call it the dead sunday gig, because this is a special
sunday in germany every year - anybody must have told robert. it's a day,
on
that we should think about or pray for the people who died in the two world
wars or anyone who died anytime - i don't care - and this day is really
called dead sunday. after all it's a good day to enjoy this cold and grey
and depressive november mood here in germany.
and a perfect day for such a cure concert..............
"The Kiel Show -- Robert reaches the Sky...."
Review by Alfio Martini
Hi Folks,
I have just comeback from Hamburg and Kiel...where
I have spent one of the most truly satisfying days of my
life so far...
I went together with Erik to the Hamburg show....which
was for me something "unbeatable"...Erik came back to Berlin
promising to write a nice review about that remarkable night
(WHERE IS THE REVIEW ERIK?....)
I stayed in Hamburg and on the afternoon went to Kiel...
The Berlin Show was already enough for me...But it was nothing
if I compare with the Hamburg one...The most marvelous, magnificent
crowd so far...
So I was depressed about what Robert could offer us in Kiel...
Maybe some 2h standard set to make the "bastards" a little happy...
To make things worse...there were not too many people there...
not more than 2.000....I believe...
Then we go....The show begins and I get into despair..
There is no "Plainsong"...that is to say...they begin with
"WANT"....
Lovely, powerful as usual...Then I note Robert dresses
some colorful clothes...which made me remember from the
"A Night Like This" video...Hum.... The second one is
easy..the standard "second one"...
"CLUB AMERICA"....
Since I myself don't like this song at all...I started to
pray for something better...I start to dance as I hear..
"A NIGHT LIKE THIS"...
It was intense to see them playing this song after..10 years
when I was still in Brazil...The next one...I thought...could be
"Fascination"...OW...No...They come with the winner
"PUSH"...
Then I started to relax...Robert was clearly happy and
from this moment on I noticed something was about to happen...
"HEAVEN"
"HIGH"...
Then Robert says..."The next song is....The next song
is about..hah...Ah! The next song is from "Kiss me",...
I couldn't believe...
"IF ONLY TONIGHT WE COULD SLEEP"...
The following one, at least for me, represents the light show in its
highest, most brilliant moment...
"JUPITER CASH"...
Then the crowd seems to awake a little bit to dance with
sound of
"MINT CAR"....
Robert often smiles and says.."The next one...we...we...we
really want to play...But we were afraid...But...honestly...
we really want to play it....It's called..."
"CATCH"...
At this moment I thought...It's enough...From now on
I just don't care....Then to my surprise...Rogers starts
to laugh like a child...and goes to this small "drum" that
Jason uses in "This is a Lie"...What the hell is he doing
there...They play
"THE HANGING GARDEN"...
With Roger plying drums together with Jason...Yes.."perfect
moments wait"...You should all see how happy he was...and he
was GOOOOOOD!!!...
Then Robert comes again..."The next song I wrote 15 years ago...
Does any of you knows the name.." He waited ...waited..looked
around ..waited...Then I screamed "The Drowning Man.."..He said"
No...this song is called...."
"THE FUNERAL PARTY..."
At this moment I realized I was already exaggerating with
the "bier-thing"...but happy...truly happy as never before....
"LIKE COCKATOOS"....Perfect...and a very introspective Robert...
who starts again talking with the crowd and says..."The next
one...I think... is more according to your expectations...It's
called..."
"THE FIGUREHEAD"...
I am amongst the ones who love(d) Boris...But Jason...and I am
sorry for this...is a far..far better drummer...He is simply
perfect...
The following sequence is standard...
"TRAP"
"PRAYERS FOR RAIN"
"TREASURE"
"INBETWEEN DAYS"
"EDGE"
"BARE"
1st ENCORE
-----------------
"SUBWAY SONG"...
Shame on me...Everybody was dancing and I couldn't remember
this song...Thanks "Jan"....
"GRINDING HALT"...
I never payed to much attention to this song...It was
one of the top moments of the show...It's brilliant pop...
The next sequence is also standard...but it was here that
the crowd got really crazy...
"PLAY FOR TODAY"
"BOYS DON'T CRY"
"10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT"
"KILLING AN ARAB"
2nd Encore
-----------
I remember mentioning to Erik in Hamburg...that I would
dream of hearing "A Night" ..."M"...and "The Drowning" in
Kiel...You know...just a silly remark...But they begin with
"M"...
At this moment I was already reduced to nothing...when
that...that drum beat begins...maybe one of the saddest songs
ever...although still with a perfect...romantic melody...
The Cure in one of its finest moments...There is nothing
to be said about...
"THE D-R-0-W-N-I-N-G MAN"...
They finish with...
"IN YOUR HOUSE"...
and "I-don't-know-what-to-say"
"A FOREST"...
That was the end of my adventure in the "Cure world"...A
remarkably romantic universe created by a both brave and
very talented man...There was an after-show party in Kiel...I wanted
to join...but I had to catch the last train to Hamburg...And
emotionally...I was simply devastated...:-))))
Now..while in the Bus back to Berlin...I was thinking that
...perhaps....Robert must be trying to say something to all of
us...Perhaps...If this is true...I believe it should be more
or less in this direction...
"Please...please...please..don't stop loving me...
Please...please...please..don't stop loving me...
I want to be all of these things..."
I apologize for the excess of "drama"....But it had to be that
way....
