plainsong - always a good start. robert was in quite a good mood, telling us
that he cannot speak german, but introducing the blood with a few german words.
but he had trounble with the lyrics of blood and edge. yeah, he did some
talking during the songs, he said a few sentences about cold, and when they
appeared for the 1st encore he said something like "now we gonna play four
weird songs" and introducing the 2nd encore as "some pop songs".
good to hear piggy again and shiver and shake, but my special was never
enough,
because it was the first time i had that live. during close to me robert
went down the stage to sing for the audience on the left side. during why
can't i be you he walked in front of the first row. they finished after
more
than two and a half hour with a brilliant version of killing an arab, but we
need a forest, forever or faith back. i'd say it was a good beginning for
the upcoming nights. but the german gigs so far were not comparable to the
us or french gigs.
Review by Erik Pischel
Hi gang,
Last Saturday, Alfio and I went to our second Cure show to Hamburg.
The Berlin concert was good. Hamburg was not, it was GREAT!! So read on!
We went there by train, booked in a hotel and went to the venue. When
we arrived I heard them playing "Plainsong" inside during the soundcheck.
Two hours til the concert. To our surprise they already opened the door.
This was a really a good decision. Coz everybody relaxed: no waiting in
the rainy and cold night. I think the crowd was more into the Cure than
that in Berlin, because for the most of the people it was more difficult
to go to this concert than it was for people in Berlin. So everyone
was waiting and this is always a nice atmosphere before a concert begins.
The hall was filled over 90%.
The show lasted 2h40min, they played 32 songs. Robert and the band
were really relaxed and enjoyed it very much. RS was also very talkitive,
Simon jumped from left to right and back and again and again and again...,
Roger always smiling, even Teddy moving! (instead of just standing there,
playing guitar very concentrated)
Just have a look at the set list:
PLAINSONG
WANT
CLUB AMERICA
FASCINATION STREET
Two perfect openers and two good rock songs. However, I had to
take care of my life and that of my walkman recorder because
there was a lot of pulling and pushing in the crowd because
everyone was (trying to) dance(ing).
LULLABY
Great lightshow! Thousands of hands clapping along...
THIS IS A LIE
THE BLOOD
Powerful!
JUST LIKE HEAVEN
People singing along... very good.
THE WALK
A surprise! And people again singing...
COLD
Really hard drumming! Jason did a great job this night!
DRESSING UP
Funny song! I like it, and Robert too.
MINT CAR
Not so much staccato this time but... I really like the song
because of the solos.
RETURN
Oh I really love it here! Great!
TRAP
TREASURE
PRAYERS FOR RAIN
The crowed was into it! And cheered a lot at the end of his
long raiiiiinnn (I didn't timed it, but it was long and he
didn't changed the pitch!)
INBETWEEN DAYS
Crowd singing...
FROM THE EDGE OF THE DEEP GREEN SEA
Epic. I SAW Teddy playing the solo, but I did HEAR just feedback...
however: great!
BARE
Epic again. Although I like this song I noticed that many people
cannot concentrate on this long ballade during a concert. Alfio
proposed RS should remove it from the set list but I don't think
he would because he regards it as one of his best songs ever.
Then I expected them to leave the stage, but they stayed, playing
some heavy guitar riffs. It turned out to be
DISINTEGRATION!
Really a great version! Very good guitar by Teddy, with much effects
and feedback. It rocked! And Robert singing all the lyrics.
Now it became really great...
-encore-
Robert mumbled smth. like "Now we gonna play some weired songs"...
PIGGY IN THE MIRROR
Great song, great performance! As I dance dance ...
CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES
Before the show I spoke to a fan from Bremen and she said
she wish they'd play "Charlotte sometimes" because she likes it
sooooo much. I said I didn't think they would play it...
I was wrong. And I really enjoyed being wrong!
People were singing along!
Then Robert played a guitar riff, the band joined in, but
it took me some seconds to recognize it was
SHIVER AND SHAKE
Really powerful version! Heavy guitars but low voice so I can
only guess he sang alternitive lyrics. But great!!
It got even better. Robert and Teddy again playing, this time
GIVE ME IT?? no! CUT?? no!
NEVER ENGOUGH
yes! As powerful as Cure can be! I can't describe it...
After they left stage I thought even if they wouldn't come
back the last five songs would outweight two encores. But they
came back...
-encore II-
"Now some pop songs"
LOVESONG
I feared he'd kicked it from the set list but he just moved it!
Great song! Although in Berlin it was a bit better. But I think
this show really rocked and this was the night of songs like
Disintegration + Shiver&Shake + Never enough.
LET'S GO TO BED
People singing along...
CLOSE TO ME
Robert going offstage
WCIBY (meddley)
Before the song starts, Robert sings a cappella "Young at heart"
(at least two lines), then they start. The meddley was really
long and cool and Robert just didn't reappeared on stage. Simon
and Perry stood there, playing this jazz, looking for Robert
because even they wondered where he was!
And even when he reappeared they returned just slowly to the
WCIBY song. So the song lasted maybe at least 10 minutes.
-encore III-
would they play a forest, forever or faith?
None of them:
PLAY FOR TODAY
People "ouuh"ing
BOYS DON'T CRY
10:15
KILLING AN ARAB
Powerful as usual. And real crow pleasers.
"Good bye". He was leaving stage, hesitated, returned and say "See you
again!".
So Cure gave their best this night and the audienced gave its best, too!
They didn't play a forest, forever or faith but we didn't care because
what a great show!! I think it was one of there best here in Europe!
I will never forget.
I will never forget.
Thank you Alfio for the nice time!
And Sascha! What a pitty you couldn't come!
