Nov. 13th-Berlin,Germany (Deutschlandhalle)

Review by Erik Pischel

Hi cure fans,

I just "recover" from a 14+ pure cure day (rather night!)!

Yesterday, there was Cure's Berlin show.

Ok, here some statics:

DATE: 13th of Nov.
VENUE: Deutschlandhalle (looks like indoor-stadium place)
Floor are of course not seated (this is not America),
        but Empores are.
PEOPLE: maybe 5000 but I'm not good in guessing. Floor was filled 2/3
and empores 3/5. About 1/3 of people were Gothic-like dressed,
others (incl. us) "normally". Age of most people in the crowed
was 20-30. Saw older and younger, of course.
STAGE: Good lightshow
SOUND: Ok w/ some mixing problems. Esp. Perry was too low at times.
MERCHANDISING: Several T-Shirts, Posters, Tourbook. T-Shirts were
        expansive (DM40,-[$27]), Posters DM10,-($7) and Book DM15,-[$10]
I got a book. It's quite good. Why is a shark not really a fish?
SECURITY: The guy who checked me should get less wage: He checked my bag,
asked if the walkman he found in there would have a recording
function. Of course, this one hasn't. Then he only checked my
jacket where he couldn't find my recording walkman of course.

DURATION: 2h20min
MUSIC: Good
#SONGS: 28
SETLIST: Pretty average. No Kiss, not even Jupiter Crash or Return.
I hoped for The 13th (because it was the 13th of Nov.) but...

Plainsong
Robert going around stage before singing. Really good lights
Want
Two perfect openers. Showing two different aspects of cure sound:
one with carpets of keyboard sounds, clear guitar lines and a soft
and almost fragile voice, the other with compressed+distorted guitar
sound, more demanding, more aggressive, more rock.
Club America
Fascination Street
good song. Perry's guitar could have been louder. Jason did a good job.
Lullaby
   Robert miming it.
The blood
works well. It's interesting how differently they play it everytime:
this time he used a capo on second fret. Guitarists among us should
watch the MTV-unplugged performance/rehearsal of The blood to see
two other ways to play this song (one by Robert, one by Porl).
This hasn't much affect on the song itself but it's interesting though...
This is a lie
Strange Attraction
   too static.
Just like heaven
standard. The A-string of Roberts 12 string popped during the song.
Mint Car
THE. SUN. IS. UP. I'M. SO. HAP.PY. I. COULD. SCREAM.
Robert staccato singing in the beginning of the verses. Also slightly
different lyrics (two lines or so completely changed, then
"Into ME it's perfect"). One of the solos (I think the fourth) was
a bit distorted, different to the album recording.
I think at this time Robert began to enjoy it a little bit.
Lovesong
Emotional. I though he'd changed a word or two but listening to my tape
I can't hear that anymore. But he didn't sing in beginning of the last
verse normally, he just hint some words... (hard to describe).
Cold
Some announcement w/ "Italy" and "France" in it, but I couldn't
   understand it...
worked well. perry on keyboard. jason did a good job again. Simon
   played melody on bass.
Trap
   rock song
Push
Great song. Robert walking up the stage, playing guitar, smiling.
Lyrics: see lovesong. But I still have to listen closer to my tape.
Treasure
Prayers for rain
   Great song. 18.5 seconds
Inbetween days
   standard.
FTEOTDGS
epic. Perry's guitar too low. I couldn't hear his solo (if he played it)
Bare
I had the feeling that the keyboard part was sometimes one or two
   bars behind.

-1st encore-
dressing up
different keyboard sounds and some notes of the melody changed. good.
play for today
again, perry's guitar too low. I couldn't hear the harmonics in the
   beginning. Else: fab
Boys don't cry
10:15 Saturday night
Killing an arab
   Three real crowed pleasers.

-2nd encore-
hot!hot!hot!
I hoped for that (coz I like it very much) but it doesn't really work
   well live...
close to me
   good.
Why can't I be you/Young at hearts
"...some jazz". really cool. 7+ minutes long. Robert going off stage.

-3nd encore-
What would they play? A forest? Forever? robert coming up with his
Fender VI string bass, so they played
Faith
Really cool, emotional. Additional lyrics and guitar riffs. Best of it
   all.
"Thank you. Good night."

So you see: good beginning, good but standard encores,
very well version of Faith.

After the concert we went to a club where they had a After-Concert-Party,
playing 99% Cure (rest was Glove and Banshees). Here we had what we couldn't
get at the concert: drowning man, icing sugar (remix), desperate journalist
etc. etc.

I left home at 3pm. yesterday and arrived at home at half past 5 in the
morning. And it was absolutely fab!

Review by Andrzej Palec

They started at 20.32 with my dreamt-up plainsong. The sound was strong

enough, but not quite clean (maybe in the middle of the hall it was better

but in the first line of the crowd it wasn't optimum).Another songs:Want,

Club America...to Lullaby (first weary girls).Robert takes his 6-string

acoustic and The Cure plays The Blood (the big surprise of this night) and

This is a Lie.Mint Car is very funny,Robert spouts up the lyrics two times

faster than it's on the record.Perry with Roger looks quite good and kindly,

but Simon seems that would never look at the people. In the first chord of

Just like heaven,Robert cracks the string (I think 'A') on his 12-string

ac.guitar and maybe this is the true reason why cure after wouldn't play

Jupiter Crash neither Round... nor Return.Love song-melancholic version.

The atmosphere is great. Why can't I be you-Robert walks down of the stage

to be loved (or tortured) by the crowd.(I didn't want to touch his hair

or face,I only shaked his right hand with microphone for a moment to sign

him up that i'm normal and to show him(and them) my big reverence and

admiration for the cure. The third encore! Robert thanks and in no time

subjoins something like this:"But it will be killing..." - Faith (I

recognized something from the additional lyrics: If i've ever said what i

really felt,If i've ever said what i really really felt...).The concert

finished 5 minutes before eleven,it wasn't very long, but so intensive

that i walked around the stadium for the next few minutes like,i don't

know, sick dog or Mr.Pink Eyes.It was the first live show of the cure,

i've ever seen in my life! I joined my 5 friends and we had to start the

way back to Prague. It rained practically all the time and I thought:

"the our today's prayer for the r. was very strong". "I'm miles and miles

and miles and miles from home (again)" sounds in my ears,I think i

wouldn't sleep (to keep the sweatest feeling as long as possible in this

way).And it's true.Now it's 5.30 a.m.,i am home,and i'm writing this

lines... (My mother opened the door to me,and she was happy nearly like me

when she understood that the concert wasn't cancelled (phh cancelled there

was finallly maybe more than 10.000 people!),she's the generation of

Beatles (i like it too - 'I'm so tired') and she fell in love long time

ago to the song like a forest, just like, catch, isn't it great (Robert)? I

will go to mail this list and after to university,to listen to 2 or 4

lectures,but it's possible....now? i am only waiting for this sunday,17th

November,to another concert of Cure in Prague!!! It must be perfect!

So bye (And remember, you don't have to sleep more, especially in this

occasions!!!
