Encore: Going Nowhere

Similar to Peter´s review I have to mention, that the Hurricane appearance of The Cure was the worst and –
even if I am really feeling bad to write these words, but I don´t know any better one to describe – most boring I
have ever seen. I really have seen a lot of concerts over the past 20 years being a Cure-“fanatic” and felt never
bored even if the performance was as long as the 3,5 hours at the Prayer Tour or the more than four hours of the
Trilogy-Concerts, that I saw on both evenings here in my hometown Berlin. They were always impressive
moments to remember and entertaining at the same time.

But the Hurricane-appearance was really different and not because of the many new and for this reason not
well-known songs that were played (the new songs are live even better than on the really good new cd). The
whole apperance was something like “bloodless”, as we would say in Germany. Or better “soulless”. I don´t
know if everyone understands what I mean, so I try to explain. For example the mixture of the setlist was not the
best. All the songs were in a kind of midtempo, even the normally “fast” “In between days”. Everything seemed
spiritless, even the normally fantastic “One hundred years”, just like the band was in a bad mood. No change of
the speed through the whole setlist and after half the concert, the audience was leaving, nearly half of the
audience till the end of the set. And the other half, that stayed, seemed to be bored and disappointed, especially
the many Cure-Fans that came a long way from Poland, Russia, U.K. and other European countries. Without the
few positive moments of the evening, like “A strange day” and “Fteotdg sea” the disappointment would have
been even indescribable.

Don´t misunderstand this, nothing against the band. They are artists and free to do what they want. They don´t
need to fulfill entertainment-expectations of their audience. But nontheless the Cure-Show at the
Hurricane-Festival was not worth the journey. Especially when I take a look at the setlist of the Southside-Show
one day later, I am really sad, that I didn´t go there or to both shows. What would the audience at the Hurricane
have given for the fantastic M, Play for today, A forest – Encore … Or for the blissfull moments “Plainsong” can
produce … not to speak of the smile, “Just like heaven” can make on someone´s face for the rest of the night …

Es war das schlimmste Cure-Konzert überhaupt. Schlechte Setlist, schlechter Sound, es passte an diesem Abend
einfach nicht. Vergleichbar mit den anderen Festivalauftritten in diesem Jahr, haben die Cure-Fans auf dem
Hurricane mit Abstand die Arschkarte gezogen. Schade. Da sollte man als Fan auch mal ehrlich sein und nicht
jeden Auftritt von Robert und Co hochjubeln.

Das Hurricane ist ein Festival, dass in erster Linie von Jugendlichen besucht wird, die mit The Cure eher
wenig anfagen können. Deshalb rechnete ich damit, viele kommerziell erfolgreiche Lieder zu hören. Aber
dem war nicht so! Von den Singles, die auf dem Greatest-Hits-Album veröffentlicht wurden, waren, wenn
ich mich richtig erinnere, nur Fascination Street, Inbetween Days, Lovesong und Pictures Of You. Die neuen
Stücke waren mir noch nicht besonders im Ohr hängen geblieben. Ich wusste noch nicht einmal, ob sie mir
irgendwann einmal gefallen würden. Doch nachdem ich so viele gestern Abend auf dem Hurricane live erlebt
habe, bin ich sehr beeindruckt vom neuen Album. Die Band spielte hauptsächlich neue Songs. Zwischendurch
gab es  einige altbekannte Titel zu hören. Was mich wirklich überraschte, war das Fehlen von Songs, wie Just
Like Heaven oder Friday, I'm in Love. Stattdessen konnte ich Titel genießen, die recht lange dauern, wie From
The Edge. Ich konnte sie genießen, aber andere, die auch schon seit zwölf Stunden auf den Beinen waren, waren
natürlich nicht mehr so aufnahmefähig und konnte solch komplexe Titel nicht mehr richtig würdigen.
Insgesamt spielten sie etwas über 90 Minuten und gaben eine Zugabe, die ich nicht kannte, wahrscheinlich auch
ein neuer Song, der hier in Deutschland nicht veröffentlich wurde. Der ganze Auftritt war geprägt von einem
Sound, der sehr druckvoll und teilweise auch sehr aggressiv war, vor allem durch die Drums, Perrys Gitarre war
leider etwas leise. Mit Rogers Keyboards gab es zu Anfang von Pictures of You einige Probleme: Der
Soundeffekt stimmte nicht, als Roger seinen Einsatz hatte. Er drückte ein paar Knöpfe und war immer noch nicht
zufrieden. Genervt drehte er sich zu einem Techniker um und schüttelte sauer den Kopf. Dann probierte er es
nochmal und spielte dann weiter. Er brauchte ein wenig, um sich zu beruhigen. Eigentlich hätte er ruhig mit dem
Anfangsklang weiterspielen können. Es hat sich spannend angehört!
Das Publikum war eher zurückhaltend. Man lauschte den neuen Songs und bildete sich ein Urteil. Nach meiner
Einschätzung sind sie gut angekommen. Ich habe einige Leute gefragt, wie sie den Auftritt fanden. Die
meisten zeigten sich beeindruckt und überrascht, andere konnte mit der Musik überhaupt nichts anfangen.

Some impressions (not really a review): It wasn´t a Cure-audience at all, the more the band turned into the gloomy
songs, the more they went paralysed or they went back.(Only for Going nowhere the crowd was really touched -
everyone was quiet!!) A completely surprising and very good setlist (which I hoped to see and hear in Cologne for
the "real" Cure-audience). Perhaps in Cologne it was still too much daylight. Nevertheless, yesterday the concert
was much better than Friday.
Without talking about each song, a general impression: The new songs (which I don´t like at all apart from Lost,
Anniversary, Promise and Going Nowehre) were better in the live version  - for the simple reason, that the sound
is more smooth. On the album there is almost any keybord, tbut he more it dominates the sound on stage. What
counts as well for the older songs as Figurehead or Picture of you. Very slow, very gloomy, very good. In general
I think, that the sound of the older songs is sligthely different from older versions (perhaps more slowly) - some
guitar lines here, some effects there. I´m wondering, if I´m the only one who has this impression....??

I´m just back from the Hurricane Festival.
Unfortunately, I haven´t got the setlist, of course it wasn´t too different from the other gigs. A nice surprise was
The Figurehead, there was just one encore, which was "Going Nowhere". "Lost" and "The Promise" were
simply brilliant.
The only bad thing was the sound during "Closedown" which was really crap. It took me a minute to figure out,
which song it is, You only could hear Jason and Simons really roaring bass. You hardly couldn´t hear anything of
Roger´s keyboard or Robert´s guitar, which was a shame, because it´s such a great song. I never heard such a
crappy sound during a live song ever. The other songs sounded quit good, so it was another really great Cure
show.
