June 13th-Hultsfred,Sweden (Hultsfred Festival)
Review by Jonas Hedkvist
So now I'm back after an exhausting experience at Hultsfreds festival in
Sweden.I will now try to give you my impression of the show.
They started to play at 9.30 pm, which means that it was still bright
outside. I was somewhat concerned about this, since I know that they
usually have a great lightshow, but it got darker as the night grew on
and the lighting was really extraordinary.
I made the mistake of going to close to the stage while waiting for them
to start, because when they started to play the intro to "Want",everyone
behind us thought that they could come closer, thus crushing us against
the fence at front. When a girl behind me went into panic because it
was too much pressure, and she started to cry, scream and hit everyone
around her (including me),I decided that it would be wise to move back
a bit. Therefore I have somewhat fragmented experiences from the first
two songs ("Want" and "Club America").
When I finally got to a place where I could actually breathe *and* see
The Cure at the same time, the show really started for me. And it was
good. Much better than the only one I've seen before (the Wish tour).
The setlist was like the one in Finland, with some minor exceptions.
Robert seemed happy most of the time, so did Roger. Simon danced
around with his head and hair down for most of the time, so I really
couldn't see him very good.Jason was nearly invisible behind the drums
and Perry looked like he was trying out to be a guitar hero (doing a lot of
standard "guitar posing").
A couple of things that I thought of during the show:
When "Prayers for Rain" came, I was really looking forward to hearing
that long note, just as the one from Entreat, but Robert didn't sing it
very long. The song was wonderful however.
"Trap" and "Return" are two of the best songs from WMS, IMHO. I
must also say that I missed "This is a Lie" and "Treasure", and that
"Mint Car" is soooo much better live than on WMS.
During "Close To Me", Robert walked around Roger, looking lost. It
almost appeared that he was missing his guitar or something. Then he
shrugged his shoulders and smiled (as did Roger) and continued with
the song. He improvised some lyrics and started to laugh a bit.
"Disintegration". What can I say. Incredible. First the greatness of
"From the Edge...", followed by "Disintegration". It was really powerful
to see Robert singing it with both his hands on the mike (he actually
pulled it from the ... well, what's it called... mike stand? - just as he
usually does when it comes to the "lighter" songs as "Let's Go To Bed"
and "Close To Me"), the guitar in front of him and he's walking around
crouching singing "How the end always is". His voice almost cracked at
some points, making the feeling that he meant every word he sang ring
even more true. Incredible. I wish I could have seen the "Prayer Tour".
After the two first encores, a lot of the audience started to walk away.
I still hoped to hear "A Forest", so I stayed on and clapped my hands.
And, just as a scene from a dramatic movie, in comes The Cure. Robert
goes up to the mike and says that they only have like six minutes before
they're kicked off stage (Bjork was to perform in less than an hour),and
then he starts to play "Boys Don't Cry". My confusion was total. Weren't
they going to play "A Forest"? Yes. Almost a quick as BDC ended,
Roger started to play the intro and the audience went crazy.
Unfortunately, they didn't improvise anything after the ordinary lyrics, but
ended quite soon.
All in all, a pretty great show. I do, however, expect to hear more old
songs when the return later this year.
