July 4th-Montreal,Canada (Molson Centre)
Review by Sebastien Boisvert
I just came back from the Montreal concert and I have to say I
was impressed: what a show! How many bands do you know who will give you
31 songs and go onstage for nearly 3 hours? These guys really respect
their fans, and they are also proving that they CAN play.
The concert itself was scheduled for 7:30 PM (EST) but guess
what, at all our surprise there was an opening act for the band: the
Doughboys, which is an alternative band from Montreal. They played for
about half an hour, and we then got a small break while the stage was
being cleaned up and prepared for the main act. This was the first show
Robert and the guys played in Montreal sinced 1982. Robert didn't like
his experience since then (from what I was told) because everyone in the
crowd was dressed up just like him, and he felt very unconfortable with
this. He never came back since, at least, until tonight.
Around 8:15 PM, The Cure got on stage. Robert had put his CCCP shirt
in the laundry and instead was dressed up with a Montreal Canadiens
(hockey club) shirt (note that the show was held at the Molson Center,
home of the Montreal Canadiens). The surprising set list went as followed:
1- Want (the adrenaline pumped up as the scarce synthesizer effects
announces something powerful)
2- Club America (better live I think)
3- A Night Like This (some people woke up when this favourite came in)
4- Push
5- Lullaby
6- This Is A Lie (nice accoustic guitar in the background)
7- Mint Car
8- Just Like Heaven (this shifted the mood of the audience, which wasn't
really that much enthusiastic until that one)
9- Jupiter Crash
10- Round And Round And Round
11- In Between Days (the crowd was singing outloud)
12- Strange Attraction
13- Fascination Street (people then really started to dance and get off their
damn seats)
14- Return
15- Treasure (fantastic loud bass drum)
16- Charlotte Sometimes (unexpected at that moment but really appreciated!)
17- Trap
18- Prayers For Rain (Robert really insisted with a 30 seconds
"raiiiiiiin" at the very end of the song, making it
critical)
19- From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea (which for me, was rather from
the edge of the balconee, trying not to
fall and kill myself)
20- Bare
21- Disintegration (They started with a long intro, followed throughout
the song with many of these breaking glass sounds. A
little bit slower as someone mentionned before, but still
pretty good. Robert begins with totally NEW LYRICS, then
goes on with the ones we already know, but messes up few
of the words here and there, especially in the
following part where Robert goes: "so I leave you with
babies and hoping for SECRECY (?!), screaming like
this in the hope of secrecy" <in the same verse!>. Robert
gets pretty emotional towards the end of the song, moving
furiously with the microphone stand all over the stage)
* ENCORE #1 *
=============
22- Friday I'm In Love
23- Boy's Don't Cry (yes, in this order)
24- Close To Me (Robert getting IN the crowd, kidding with the fans)
25- Why Can't I Be You? (!!!!!!!!! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT! Incredible
8 MINUTES VERSION with a new part and new
additionnal lyrics. Robert and the guys got in
the mood of the Montreal International Jazz
Festival and make for the first time a "wild jazz
swings" (!) jam out of it. Imagine a catchy blues
break in the middle of the song, and everybody
singing along with Robert "WhyCan'tIBeYou?
WhyCan'tI?" very very fast, repeating over and
over again, faster and faster! As a result, the crowd
went nuts. A score? 10 on 10, definitly a MUST!)

26- A Strange Day
27- Play For Today (everybody going "ooooh oh oh" just like the version on
Paris)
28- 10:15 Saturday Night
29- Killing An Arab

30- Dressing Up
31- A Forest (new lyrics added and the second part of the lyrics is sang
in a totally different way than on the Wish tour. Yet, Simon
ended the song with violent bass riffs as seen on the Show
videotape, but less harsh)
The show was great, and the band seemed to be in a very happy
mood (Roger has been waving to people in the crowd all the time, and
Simon DOES jump like a frog! :). On the other hand, Perry seems very
discrete on stage). Jason's drumming was excellent.
The show ended a small bit after 11 PM, so it lasted for about 2h45.
I estimate the crowd to something like 10,000 people, maybe more, but not
that much. No official sources on this.
