Translation of the review in Belgian newspaper Le Soir (July 3rd, 2004) :
When old people are teaching
It's not yet tomorrow that The Cure will give us it's own version
of "God's Twilight". Thursday night, Robert
Smith was participating for the 5th time at the Werchter festival,
equaling REM's record. With his band, he
could just have been contenting with doing a classical "best of",
to make nostalgics happy. And add some new
songs of the new album, to stay "professional". Nothing of
all that : the Britannics have conviced curious people
and strong fans. Buzz off "a forest" or "Boys don't cry" ! those
emblematics titles that had great impact in the
new wave of the 80's. In place of that, The Cure offered a
very well built set : each song add something to the
ambiance of the previous one., in a crescendo where large instrumentals
parts were made.
Beginning with "Plainsong" and "Before 3", the band doesn't let
a lot of place to the pop breathings that were
brought someday with "Why can't I be you" or "Friday I'm in
love". And when "100 years" appears, 22 years
old, the ambiance became incandescent, accentuated by the red lights.
The setlist give a large place to
"Disintegration". A major album, one of their best (we already
seen it at Forest-National during the Trilogy
concert). "Fascination Street", played early, is still distiling
the same rage again. "Pictures of you" and, later
"Love Song" are somptuous.
Ok, Robert Smith shows his demons, always the same. Between
two songs he drinks his beer. His stoutness and
his make up gives him some apparence of a sad clown. But some
smiles are reheating : those he's doing to his
musicians, thoses to the camera's on the Lullaby's chorus (Spider
man is having me for dinner tonight). The band
looks then more united than ever, at the right place. The new songs
? AT the right place too. The guitars's riffs
more rock listened on the cd are accentuating the words, not really
"pink". On "The Promise" by example with
it's fascinating despair.
On this recycling time, The Cure stay an atypical band. Hard,
of course to not became nostalgic. But it was really
no question of a dusty apparition thursday night.

There's an article on www.lesoir.be : http://www.leguide.be/Guide/musiques/page_5377_232732.shtml
Here's a translation :
Tuesday evening, Robert Smith came for the
fifth time at the Werchter festival, equaling the number of
appearances of REM. With his band, he could
just have played a classic 'best of' show, just to please the
nostalgics. And play some songs of their latest
album. But none of that happened, and the brits convinced a
number of curious people in the audience,
plus all the fans.
No 'Forest' and other 'Boys Don't Cry', these
emblematic titles that marked the new wave of the 80's. Instead of
that, The Cure played a judiciously chosen
set (...).
Starting the set with Plainsong and Before
Three, the band is not leaving much space for pop songs like Why
Can't I Be You and Friday. And when 100 Years
is starting (22 years old now), the atmosphere becomes
incandescent (?).
The setlist leaves a large space for titles
of Disintegration, a must have album, and also one of their best albums
-
as we could convince ourselves about it during
the trilogy show in Forest National.
Fascination Street played early in the set
is once again giving this fantastic rage. Pictures of You and, a little
later, Love Song, are somptuous.
Ok, RS is still with his demons, always the
same ones. And, between two titles, he's drinking some beers. His
overweight and makeup are giving him the style
of a sad clown. But there has been smiles that are giving warmth
: the ones he is exchanging with the other
band members, the ones to the cameras on the chorus of Lullaby ( the
spider man is having me for dinner tonight
... ). And the band seems with those even more strong together.
The new titles ? They also deserve their place in the set. (...)
In these times of recycling (the new wave is
back), the cure is still an atypic band. It's obviously hard not to be
nostalgic. But it was surely not a dusty appearance,
this thursday night ( meaning it can't be compared with the
return of the eighties bands like duran duran
and co ).

Around 13.00 i drove to Belgium (alone...no-one
i know really likes The Cure so most of the time i have to go
alone to concerts).
The first few acts really didnt impress me
but i have to say: Pink was/is really good !! I mean she really sings
live very well. But that wasnt the reason
why i drove all the way to Belgium. I WANT TO SEE THE CURE !
Finally it was time: they started with plain
song, one of the greatest openers of all time. The sound was in my
opinion very good, but at this time
i had a couple of beers.....
I really like the new album so i was very
pleased to hear the promise, going nowhere, us of them etc.
But the greatest suprise was: A night like
this and jupiter crash.
I cant wait to see them in november at the
ahoy in rotterdam (i know for sure they will play then.)
It was a very good concert.

I got back yesterday. Got me 2 T-shirts: The
white, swirly logo and the one with the purple heart. I also found a
big posterflag of Robert close-up around The
Top era, got it from one of the small shops on the road between the
campsite and the concert grounds :)
About the concert: That show was amazing :o
I was standing to the left around the third
row. The crowd were mostly assholes around me, so much that I
"accidently" *grin* elbowed someone in the
face after being pushed for the third time by some drunk bastard.
Robert was very shy again when he was "greeting"
the audience during Plainsong (opener). He was almost
begging to stop cheering and applauding while
making "please stop!" gestures with a little shy smile on his face :D
Looks like he had a little haircut as well.
They've played for a total of +/- 2 hours and
it was a pretty good setlist. A lot of 'Disintegration' songs like
Plainsong, Pictures Of You (together with
some tears), Lullaby, Fascination Street, Lovesong and Disintegration
(started great, but seemed a bit held back
throughout the rest of the song). They've played MANY songs from the
new cd: Before Three, The End of the World,
alt.end, Us Or Them, The Promise and Going Nowhere.
Other songs were Just Like Heaven, Inbetween
Days, FTEOTDGS, Jupiter Crash (!!!), A Night Like This, A
Strange Day and One Hundred Years (and some
tears again). Roger seemed a bit ill, he put on his coat halfway
the show, and he disappeared during One Hundred
Years. Cheers to him for playing this gig! I've heard Perry was
sick as well, but it didn't show at all. He
was rivaling Simon jumpwise! :D
Their encores were The Promise (he had a bit
of technical problems with this one I think, he was making "up"
gestures to the soundtechs) and Going Nowhere.
Especially that last one was amazing, was a really emotional
moment; Me and my girlfriend Wendy are 1 year
together as from July 2nd :) It was a little after 12pm so it
couldn't be more perfect. I'm glad I could
share this concert with her.
He closed the whole thing with the words "See
you sometime later this year", so I have hope that the rumours for
Vorst in october are true. We both took a
lot of pictures, and will send them to CoF when they're done.
Brilliant :)
- Dave
Excellent concert at Werchter, but the end
of the main set was filled with technical problems : during 100 years,
Robert had a problem with his guitar during
the closing guitar solo. His guitar was taken by a roadie during Us
or Them for repair. Then came disintegration,
and that song needed the use of that guitar too. And apparently,
the problem was still there because Robert
was unable to perform his guitar parts properly, ending the song by
simply making noise with one cord instead
of playing his solo. They then stopped for the main part of the concert,
no playing The Promise as usual. They came
back for the encore, and played The Promise after a break of less
than 2 minutes, just the time for a roadie
to fix it again.
Highlights were a very nervous "night like
this", Before Three (also excellent live) and The Promise. alt.end
was also a good surprise and was not as bad
as you all think (no, don't throw stones at me)
The other "special" thing of this concert was
Roger being visibly ill. He was sitting for the whole show, and also
playing sometimes out of pace or even making
mistakes, which is not usual at all with him. It didn't seem to
annoy Robert, because they were laughing at
him with Simon. Roger even left during 100 years, and only went
backstage very often during breaks between
songs, coming back on stage just a few seconds before his part
starts. During From the Edge, it seemed a
very tiring task for him to play that piano note in pace with Jason.
No "suprise" track were played, but I suppose
it had to be a "business as usual" concert due to Roger's state.
The crowd was cool and had a lot of Cure fans,
easy to check when they play FTEOTDGS : the Cure fans are
the one "putting their hands to the sky" when
requested ;-)
During Going Nowhere, Robert was looking at
Roger, with a big smile, when Roger played his wonderful piano
parts, just like if he wanted to say
"seems you're not dead yet Roger !". At the end of going nowhere, Robert
said goodnight, so we knew the show was over.
It was nice to see that Robert looked relaxed, even though he had multiple reasons to be upset.
Looking forward for this autumn concerts :
I've hope due to Robert's "see you later in the year" at the end of
"Going Nowhere".
- Eric Florkin
Good solid cureshow (it was my 5th). Robert
seemed to be enjoying it a lot. He was actually having a couple of
(Belgian) beers during the show. The band
made a very selfconfident impression on me. Heavily Disintegration
dominated set with hits and new songs blended
in. I was impressed with the very powerfull vocals of Robert. You
wondered if he would hold out during the new
stuff live....well he did !! After Disintegration I saw Robert giving a
sigh of relieve but he came back with an incredible
powerfull performance on The Promise.
Roger looked more and more like a zombie during
the course of the show and must have had a bad fever. Played
his parts great though...
Apart from great performances of Before Three
and A Night Like This (which one was never one of my favorites
but came close to A Forest now) I liked a
very slow, majestic version of A Strange Day a lot!!
New elements were out of tune psychedelic
guitar jams (The Kiss style like on Trilogy DVD) during 100 years
guitarsolo part and Disintegration guitarsolo
part... Or was Roberts guitar really out of tune and did he make the
best of it??
"thank you, good night. See you later in the
year" he promised us. Very good show only surpassed by Zillo 2002
and off course Berlin 2002.
- Luuk
Yesterday, it was the 18th time that I saw
The Cure. I don't know why, but I didn't feel excited. And
the concert
was a good answer to my feeling.
No great surprise (excepted a night like this).
Robert seemed to be tired, very tired at the end of
"Disintegration",... No particular remark.
We"ve seen better festivals (in 2002, in Carhaix, for exemple, or in
95...)... OK, a festival is NOT a concert...
The sound was pretty good and the light show
as usual. Still proud being a Cure fan, a bit disappointed... till
the
next concert,
- Sébastien
Very happy to go back to Werchter for the third
time (90,95,04) The crowd is still the same very good and noisy
as usual in festivals !!!!!
' Plain Song' Great opening
its remind me from the prayer tour 15 years ago
'Before 3' a little bit too slow but one of
my favorite from 'the cure lp'
'fascination street' perfect as usual
'eotw' good and perfect voice from Robert
'a night like this' perfect pop song for a
festival
'in between days' the song was carry by JASON,SIMON
& ROBERT the others were away maybe looked at the
sky to see the planes???
'jupiter crash' NO I SAID NO we don't cross
2 differents countries for this one get off of the set
'pictures of you' perfect ( disintegration
era save the set again...)
'lullaby' please stop to try this extended
version played it normal
'alt end' very nice and very clear enough
powerful
'a strange day' wake up you're on stage only
Robert was in
'just like heaven' anyway every Cure fans
like this good for a festival
'from the edge' i've just waiting for this
one it's allways perfect powerfull & beautiful
'100 years' a little bit different Roger leaves
the stage but still good and the drums more louder than the drum
machine that's good
'us or them' that's a really good one with
enough anger from Robert
'disintegration' maybe my favorite the sound
was really good except than Perry never replace Porl on this one
encore break
' a promise' BRILLIANT !!!!!!!! perfect
live song
'going nowhere' well i really enjoy this one
when i listen this one..alone, but what about FAITH to close ????
Anyway we drive all the way from Paris to Werchter
for the CURE again.
The show was not the best one ,but, the new
material is really good and if you are the chance to catch the band
live , just go it's really worth it. It was
my 37 Cure concert and i want more .
- Frederic
Had the pleasure of seeing the band at Wercher
yesterday.
Great set. Enough pop songs to please the
crowd. Nice to hear Jupiter Crash again. Something was really
screwed up with the sound of the guitars though.
I don't know if it was because we were standing on the right hand
side of the stage, but Perry's guitar was
really loud and we could hardly hear Robert's. Also Jason's most outer
right cymbal was silent to us. Was hoping
to hear Lost, but I guess we'll have to wait till October. The new songs
sound great live. The bass and drums on these
really sound energetic. Very impressed with Jason's improvements.
Hope he can also use it to upgrade some of
the old work. I love the energy and anger in Us or Them. Also the
Promise was very powerful. Good to hear and
feel Mr. Smith screaming his lungs out. I'm glad that the band is
finally back on track again. The rumour that
something is about to change (again) worries me though...
- Hans
The Werchter show was a very good mix of joyful
and heavier songs. The set started with Plainsong which
was a very good opener. Before Robert started
singing he greeted the audience from every corner of the stage
(as he often does). The show was very good
but I 'd rather would have seen the M-Play for today - A Forest
encore. When Robert came back on stage he
mentioned something like "I've changed... I'm still in the mood"
And he carried on with playing The Promise
which is a bit in line with the three heavier songs at the end of the
first set. So I presume the band changed the
encores at the very last minute. Nevertheless this was a very good
show, better than the last one the cure played
in Werchter during the Dream Tour. I hope they will be back in
Autumn (as Robert mentioned).
- Stephan Vanlommel
I would like to admit some revieuw from the
werchter-show yesterday evening.
But before i do that i also would like to
say that i really like the new album, it has got that powerfull impact
and i
love to play i very (yeah very very) loud
so i can sing and scream allong the hole album through. Hearing some
nem songs live was good, the sound is ok and
when the audience all would appreciate it the vibe would be great
"the promise" was everything i exspected from
it, it just took me to an other level and made me forget my
trouble. The other song where played on a
good level, highlight for me: plainsong (everything felt so cold), a
strange day (yes it really is), lovesong (love
for every cure fan), just like heaven (just for my "i"), one hundred
years (powerful as hel) and as i said before
"the promise and finishing with going nowhere" was super ok!!!
I 'm really looking forward to see them indoor.
I think that the atmospfeer indoor is better for the cure and cure
lovers. At the festival i had the feeling
that many people wanted a "greatest hits show" and when they didn't get
that they started to talk instead of keep
listening and enjoy the thing they were doing.
finally i would also like to say that many
people spontanoiusly started talking to me (some laughed at a less
plessend way) because of my hair (robert style)!
i was surprised that i was almost the only one. Where did all the
others go?
Lots of love and hopefully we will meet again indoor,
- Bert
Before the show started, TMF filmed already
the setlist for a few seconds and showed this on the big screens so
everybody could see it. So stupid, no really
surprises anymore...
They started with Plainsong, Robert standing
at the edge from the stage. Simon gave a kiss to the picture on his
Ampeg, a picture from his kid. Roger was sitting
down on a chair. During One Hundred Years he left the stage, so
it was a raw, powerfull version without any
keyboards.
After Going Nowhere Robert said "See you later
this year", so they certenly come back to Belgium. For the rest
no surprises in this set, missed Closedown,
surprised they didn't start with Lost, but that will be for the concert
later this year (7 October in Brussels???),
on the other hand, Plainsong is a good opener (perhaps the best one)
and I don't like when it's played in the midle
of the set or as an encore.
It was a good concert, not the best one that
I saw from The Cure (I saw them in '89 at Wembley on the third night
and I think I never will see such an amazing
good concert again).
- Stephan
