Here's the translation of the Berligske Tidende review:

Review by Thomas Søie Hansen, in Berlingske Tidende, July 3, 2001.
The transcript is translated directly from Danish...

The Cure painted a perfect ending to this years Roskilde Festival, one year of the tragic accident.

Had life gone its usual way in Roskilde during last years festival, the Cure would have played beatuiful
atmospheric tristesse after a generic Pearl Jam concert. But, unfortunately  that's not what happened. After the
tragic accident at the Orange stage, the Cure were of course cancelled.

This year the tragicpop biggest name said yes to close the main stage, even though they are currently in the
studio recording a new album. And now they will return to the studio and work during the remainder of the year.

The show did not make it obvious that last time the Cure played live was last autumn. For almost two hours they
played tight and energetically with a very upbeat and well singing Robert Smith.

Of the more than 40.000 people, most of the hits-seekers were out of luck, with the only hits being Fascination
Street and The Kiss. Band leader Robet Smith focussed on last years Bloodflowers mixed with eerie and
melancholic songs from their back catalogue.

The songs were played extra long and atmospherically, and were generally as beautiful and melancholic as only
Smith can write them. Nobody else in the world could ever reach him, in regards to themes such as teenage
frustration, midlife crisis and unhappy love. In the beautiful ballad "Trust" the reviewer got goosebumps and
swelling tears.

The Cure painted dark moods of the night and sadness and as such presented a very precise portrait of a
festival so influenced by last years tragedy.

Any other closing would be unthinkable.

It was a very intense gig. The Cure were very much concentrated. Each of the band seemed to enjoy playing
live again - especially Robert. My personal highlights were "100 years", where Robert tuned up his voice, and
"End", which was much better performed than last year.

I suppose that we all did expect another set, as after each tour, it always changed, when playing on a summer
festival. This time the rules were "broken" and the gig pushed me back into the good memories to the
Dreamtour. And that was my problem with this gig. As it seemed to continue the dreamtour, I was rather
disappointed about the standard set. But, I think it´s normal, if one saw gigs like Hamburg (Promo), Madrid,
Paris etc. in the last year. Maybe it´s unfair to compare this special concert with the unbelievable ones at the
Dreamtour...

Anyway, it was nice to see the Cure again. They are still playing great and it seems that they will come back
soon.

Cheers,
Sven

Review by Leo

It's very early now for me to type stuff , we just got back at 4 o clock in the morning and i havent slept much ,
because i have to pick up my dogs at my parents place , but Ill try to tell something about the Roskilde show.

It was nice , A little short , we were all hoping for them to play 3 hours and the reason why is that they were
closing the stage that they were playing on , and there was still another stage that had bands to start at like
3:30 in the morning .

But after waiting all day to see them , beeing in line for the front area for 4 hours ( standing up) we finaly were
allowed into the front area we ran towards the stage, wich was a little difficult because of all the denmarkanian
security/crowd safety people  but , we got a nice place standing in front of the stage at the perry/simon side.

After the roskilde guy said his stuff ( wichwas nice ) he announced the Cure, and so the dream tour intro music
started (such wonderfull music)

and there they were..............

Started with out of this world and the rest of the beginning of another dream tour , it was amazing , you could
see in the first songs that this was gonna be a good show , the way robert was playing , normaly it gets him
some time to relax and get into the music, but he was already very into it playing watching me fall( the way
he was moving and singing)

During open he was looking up at the part where he sings  "AND i LOOK AT the FLOOR" and he did that on
purpose a few times just to be funny, it was nice

they were all in a very good mood i think , perry was sometimes smiling at the crowd , you could hear it in
roberts singing , the way he sometimes chages the way he sings certain parts of songs. it was nice and we got
to hear the Kiss wich is was wonderfull and what reminded me  how powerfull this band is we all like so much,
its a wall of sound and it was amazing

100 years robert screamed very loud before saying 100 years at the end of the song ( feels like one hundred
years ) and he repeated it more than normaly , it was amazing

so bloodflowers was played to , a song wich i had expected , and it wasnt going very well it became off beat
and they had to recover it and the guitar robert does inbetween the verses  didnt go very well , the effect wasnt
set right and robert was fussing with that for a little bit and he played that different to.

but it didnt change much to the emotion of the song because robert realy was singing very nice and we was
standing there with his arms wide open at times , and had a good feeling for it, the solo was a little loud but
good as the album version .

so off stage they went , he had said befor bloodflowers that that was the last of this set, like they did with the
dream tour most of the times.

then ofcourse they had us wait for a bit to get back on stage  , so we started "screaming" for them , and they
came back , funny how that always works with encores.

as he came back he gave a nice thank u very much and he said , were going on a small holiday to pop , wich
was funny , and nice because we all like him to talkand so he said something

Inbetween days started , crowd jumping and being happy it was nice, and this all made me think that this was
gonna be a nice long show , it didnt seem to end

the crowd was very relaxed and i dont think there was a lot of dancing and jumping I looked around a little
and it was ok ,could also be that we were just to amazed seeing them again and standing there in front of
them(which is what i always have).

so more jumping a nice Just like heaven and then a forest started

Again something  played a little strange , the intro he missed out one note , but lets not get precise just one
note , but it is to be mentioned .

and then after we clapped along with the ending bass the song was  done and robert came to the mic,

and gave us a thank you very much , and saying this it it.

he walked onto the little stage exstention wich was very small , but it was where he could get a little closer to
us and he opend his arms and did a little funny thing wich sortof looked liked grabbing us , and then they left

I couldnt belive it it seemed not to be this way , but then the roskilde people came onstage , and i knew it was
over .

it was a littl dream again , we were very lucky to see them again and be with our friends gain, we met a lot of
nice people again , it was amazing

one word about the roskilde festival itself it is nice as friendly as friendlyness, it was a nice little trip

thanks robert,roger,simon,jason,perry it was nice

There's a review at Berlingske (major Danish newspaper) at http://www.berlingske.dk/artikel:aid=107137

It's very positive "The Cure - A Perfect End"

I dont have the time to translate it right now, but mentions that Robert was singing well that night (I AGREE
100% - saw the concert)

When it was a festival concert I rate it 5 out of 6 (I've seen the cure in 2000 and 1992)!

More from Lars Skaanning

Just a quick notice on the press feedback on The Cures concert Subday at Roskilde.
I can`t remember having read so many positive rewievs about a Cure concert since 89`!! All the newspapers
(except one) has written about how great a show it was, and how the music, the show and the sheer appearence by
the band called for real respect and, in some papers, even the title as 'Best concert at this years Roskilde'.
Many journalists seemed to be pleased that The Cure is now back in serious music (as they put it) and that
no-one beats them when it comes to majestic, heartfelt music.
The journalist from Berlingske Tidende even seemed to have a difficult time finding enough positive superlatives..
A transcription of all these reviews (8) would take much too long, but now you have the general picture.

Review by Lars Skaanning

A one-off concert on a festival after many months of not playing live ? Well, to me this doesn`t sound as too good
a basis for a smashing Cure concert. Furthermore, the whole atmosphere around The Cure playing there was just
about non-exsisting - nobody seemed to be there to see our old friends and compared to the other times Í`ve seen
the band at Roskilde (90 and 95) it was weird and rather sad to see how The Cure's popularity and "relevance"
has decreased in the eyes of the common youngster.

However, the spirit seemed high and positive among the present fans. As nobody has ANY idea about what was
going to be played, everybody had their own wishes and idiosyncracies. Generally nobody thought it would be just
the pop hits (as these songs appears quite seldom in the setlist these days), but apart from that everything was
open.

It turned out to be a "shaved" Dream Tour set with some singles as the encore. Adagio for Strings brought back
memories from the wonderful tour and as it slowly drifted over in the drums of Out of this World the setting was
just about perfect. Watching me Fall followed - just as it is "supposed" to - with its grand wall of guitars and
cymbals. Robert and Simon (who now has very short hair) was really into this song - Robert with brilliant vocal
performance and Simon playing with his bass almost on the floor. Want sounded very good as well, but the back-up
tape went down for a second or two in the intro. So far all the songs had been surprisingly tight and well-played
(the situation considered that is), but the guy next to me who screamed for Friday wasn`t too happy. Fascination
Street seemed to be more recognized than any of the previous songs, but the "hit-parade" was soon to be ended
as Open and Trust, quite surprisingly, appeared just after. I know they played both Open and Trust many times
on the Dream Tour, but I just didn`t expect to hear them and in the case of Trust certainly not so early in the set.
They sounded alright, but one could have wished for some more of Roger's great piano improvisation. The good
Roger was however a true king on the guitar in Open!!! Of course it is just simple things he is playing, but he is
really doing a nice job there considering he is a keyboard-player - he seems to enjoy it quite a lot and I understand
from an interview that he has been toying around a lot with guitars and basses lately, so watch out Robert, Perry
and Simon!!  - or switch instruments ! Maybe Someday and Shake dog Shake was next in line. Both these songs
was average versions compared to the rich, noisy and stark feeling we all remember from the recent tour. When
From the edge..... started, the poor man at my side looked both bored and perplex at the same time - Where was
Spideman? and that How can I be you ? The last thing I want is to bad-mouth other people's taste - they have
every right to like whatever Cure song they find value in or whatever band they want - but it was a bit funny
to watch his face a couple of minutes into The Kiss. After this (almost) top-class version of The Kiss, the main
set was starting to end - so to say. End was performed better than I`ve heard in some time. For once it was
possible to hear the guitar hook-line and the bass was rough and hard. They still use those bongo-like things on
the back-up tapes.....I really don`t think it works - is it supposed to play up to the bass line ? or the real drums ?
It is hard to say, but considering the very good and interesting percussion etc. they have started to use, this
particular idea doesn`t sound too good - if you ask me (you probably don`t).

It was beginning to smell a lot like 100 Years and with its fab attack of guitars, keyboard walls, drums and drum machine it was to be the highlight of the evening. In the chorus - if such a thing exsists in 100 Years - Robert sang
slightly different, almost screaming. It was very moving and heartfelt....... This was, by the way, the only notable
change in vocal line and words in the entire concert. Then the funky sequence of 39 began and soon after Simon's
agressive bass came pounding out of the speakers......this man plays so tight and precise....wauv Bob Wauv!!.
Bloodflowers ended the main set. Needless to say it was fab....as always. Jason did a very good job, playing
relaxed where it was needed, and hard and direct in the more agressive parts of the song. Unlike some other
people, I really think Jason plays the drums excellent and with an always present awareness of where he is
supposed to rock and where he is not. Listing to 95 shows and some 96, it is clear that he has found his p lace
and style now-a-days. Cheers to him!!

Eventhough The Cure sometimes play some quite weird and unpredictable sets (and thanks for that), I felt pretty
sure that they were going to do some singles in the encore. Strangely I wasn`t wrong. They came back and Robert
said something like "....now a short trip back to pop land" and thus Inbetween days was in action and afterwards,
Just like heaven. The crowd was pleased to hear them and sang along. Both the songs were standard versions -
not particulary good or bad. A Forest marked the ending of the concert. Again a quite ordinary version,
eventhough things were really cooking at the end.

An over-all comment to the concert must be a positive one. The band performed good and tight for most of the
show, and eventhough it was not of Dream Tour standard, it was, all things considered, a  very good experince.
For a hardcore Cure fan this concert probably won`t be among the very best, as one could have wished for Dream
Tour standard in the performing and set list, but, on the other hand, who was counting on that for a festival
concert? Probably not even The Cure themselves...

Sadly the PA wasn`t sounding very sharp or destinct. From time to time, like in Out of this world the instruments
were all in quite a blur. It may not matter much if you play grunge or something, but in the case of The Cure it
leaves you slightly irritated  - to say the least. Well, I guess that`s just how festival concerts are and will always
be.

The was a little interview with Robert in the festival newspaper. Sadly I lost the copy I was givien, so I can`t
transcripe it, but he was talking about how good a relationship everybody in the band has with each other and how
they never had a doubt about returning to Roskilde. Of course he also expressed his grief about last years sad
tragedy and talked about how he felt completly empty and drained of feelings just after it was known that people
had actually died. All of the bandmembers did their best to help and comfort Pearl Jam, but obviously things had
been completly surreal.
He also talked about his doubts about The Cure being relevant these days, but, as he said "... as long as there are
endless rows of fans to whom The Cure means so much we must be relevant in our own way..."
Robert said that he wanted to see either Deftones, Dandy Warhols or PJ Harvey at the festival, but he wasn`t
sure if he would eventually go, because he always had to talk to hundreds of people.

The show is reviewed in (so far) 2 danish newspapers, BT and Ekstra Bladet. In BT the comments was quite
positive (4 out of 6), but Ekstra Bladet was not so happy about it. The journalist, who appears to like The Cure
very much, thought that more hits should have been played to please that crowd, and that the band generally
wasn`t up to their best both in the actual playing, but also in enegy.

Comments by Jim

My wife was able to go see the Cure yesterday. She said it was an incredible show. She said that the band
appeared to be happy because she saw them smiling back and forth with each other (she was in the front row)
during the show. She said Robert said that this was the only show they were doing because they ARE in the studio
recording a new album. Hope this info helps.
