'Just Say Yes' (Curve remix)
"Erm... Lucky break this is just a remix...Cure never were good on Remixes...Hope the lp version will be better.
I repeat, on Cut HEre... it has a lack of nerve,
too... easy... Bloodflowers had a lack of this tension I felt in previous
Cure records, It had brilliant moments ok,
but the whole record was 50% good for my taste and the other 50%
reminded me those moments in which Robert
cannot convince me and the songs sound fake to me...
- Abel
" "negative reaction"? i thought it's
the perfect blend of early cure attitude in a more modern style (of course
it's a remix, but i'm guessing it's fundamentally
the same). i don't find it to be a complete departure at all because
you really have to take in account of just
how multi-faceted the group has always been; every time anyone could
come close to pigeonholing something as "cure-esque",
they redefine themselves. definitely one of my favorites
of the past few years, right up there with
adonais and last day of summer."
- Blue
"I don't agree with the other reviews. I first
listened to "Cut here" and i didn't listen to the whole track because
i thought it was always the same thing with
the eternal six string bass etc etc. The change in the song when robert
starts singing "SO DIZZY MR BUSY..." remind
me something like Wild Mood Swing :-( and when the change
starts the song goes completely wrong and
horrible...
But when i listened to "Just Say Yes (Remix)"
i thought it was brilliant, so unexpectable and aggresive. I think
at the time The Cure should make more experimental
music in that way ..."
- Denis
"My opinion on Just Say Yes is very different
from most of your views. I like this song much more than Cut
Here - Cut Here is good, Just Say Yes is fantastic.
It just rocks! Something The Cure never tried before - after
23 years this band still surprise me. That's
why I love this song. Can't wait to hear the original..."
- Simon
"Just say yes” to me was refreshing and fun.
I am surprised at the negative feed back regarding this song. To me,
this is one of the most old school sounding
goth-rock with a modern twist, I have not heard a song this cool for a
long time. The vocals, I thought was a fantastic
twist and unpredictable, as a long time fan I was not disappointed at
all. I will be honest, I was more disappointed
with, yet another re-working of the same guitar leads in “Cut Here”
as you will find in at least 10 other cure
songs! How many times can Robert pull off the same melodic guitar lead,
ok, I understand the “Cure Riff” thing, I
really do, but give it a rest already. This is why, I am favoring the sound
that I find in “Just Say Yes”. Remember, the
last time the boys did the greatest hits thing, they did “Wrong
Number” and I heard the same thing back then.
The follow up to that was “BloodFlowers”, so relax people and
let Bob have his fun."
- Jeff Love
"I dont think this is bad at all, i would just
hope the band dont make a habit of this kind of song. as a one off, i
think its quite a headrush of a song and in
my opinion, better than the bland Cut Here, and I think as a duet, it
works."
- Jamie
"Yes, it definitely was "different".
Is that a nice way to say it was bad. LOL!!! It sounded too much like Curve
and
not enough like the Cure. I want to
hear the actual single before writing it off as "no good". I didn't
care for the
Underdog mix of "Watching Me Fall" either,
but loved the original. Maybe it will be the same with "Just Say Yes".
I thought Robert and Saffron's voice merged
well."
- Joe Rodriguez
"I've just listened on Xfm on-line to the remix
of "Just say yes" and I have to say I was also a bit disappointed...
But as you said, that was just a remix, so
maybe the album version will sound better and -- let me say it --"Curer"!
"
- Marcos, Porto Alegre, Brazil
"Hey, i just wanted to make a small comment
just in case people (readers) dont realize it yet, that Just Say Yes
was a song that was written during the Bloodflowers
era, and shouldnt be taken as a sort of indication of any
'direction' the cure may or may not be taking
as of the greatest hits package. Im sure people have realized this,
but i'm also sure people listened to the song
and thought to themselves that it was written for the greatest hits
and thats why it may be sort of 'different',
so to speak.
- Erich
"Just Say Yes" was a little bit to "fast"
for me. I was expecting something like "The Loudest Sound", but as you
mention, we still have "Signal to Noise"
- Fernando Molina, Mexico
'CuT HEre'
"I don't know if you will post this BUT - i've
been listening to the 'cut here' single over the past few days since
Elektra put up the clip. At first, i
was kind of put off. It's since grown on me, but after I read what
the DJ wrote
about how Robert mentioned the song was about
a suicide of a good friend, it took on a whole new meaning for
me. Listening to the song, he mentions
the name "Billy" - and this is alluding of course to Billy Mackenzie of
the amazing post-punk band The Associates.
He killed himself 3 years ago, which Robert also alludes to in the
lyrics.
What makes it even more brilliant is the extreme
poppy nature of the track VS. the extreme honesty and pain
being expressed in the lyrics. A classic
Robert-thing to do! It now reminds me of "Just Like Heaven" for
this very reason. But that feeling of
seeing & talking to someone "just one more time" is a shared feeling
of
many people who have lost someone close to
them before their time. I love the Cure so much..."
- Kyle
"I think "Cut Here" is growing on me. I didn´t
really like it at first but now that I have seen the video and read
the lyrics I´m starting to appreciate
it, ´cause it transports the mood behind it very precisely and accurate.
Still it
doesn´t feel like a single - but on
the other hand, I think it possibly could have been "the single" if was
"Wild
Mood Swings". I imagine the song would sound
great when they played it acoustic. Maybe the keyboards and
electronic sounds are a little bit annoying
and don´t add anything to the warm atmosphere of the song. Some parts
remind me of the Bloodflowers outtake "Spilt
Milk". I am wondering why they didn´t re-record that song. This
could have been a great single, too. "
- Boris
"Very much like "back-to-the-mid-eighties"
stuff. Reminds me a bit of Just Like Heaven in its atmosphere
and New Order in its melodies. Sweet and sour.
I found it the best song they've made since 1992."
- Kimmo
"While everyone is entitled to their opinion
(however arrogant and bloated it might be!), I think Cut Here is pure
pop genious, and way more catchy and memorable
than wrong number. I think the beat is great. It's quite busy,
just like Robert's too busy to stay and have
that drink in the songs lyrics! Yeah, it's 80's retro, but you really
can't
criticize it on that since the Cure practically
invented that sound to begin with (thank goodness!). That's like
criticizing the Rolling Stones for sounding
like the old Rolling Stones. Too poppy? It's a single, stupid, and
the
last time the cure released a single that
wasn't particularly upbeat poppy was Charlotte Sometimes, so lighten up!
I think cut here is a cute heart warming
(and heart breaking) song that voices quite clearly a situation in which
most of us have been at one time or another, and
which we now regret the choice we made to walk away...
The single proves to me once again that the
cure are the best band ever. Cheers to the Cure!"
- Larry Wineland
"Beautiful. I'm a bit surprised to see
some dissention amongst the reviews on this page, as I think "Cut Here"
is
the best single since... I dunno..."High".
For those that like the darker side of The Cure and get irritated with
the
pop singles, don't forget that this song was
recorded to go onto an admittedly 'happy' collection of Cure.
I cried the first time I heard it all the way
through. Having just broken up with a long term girl... the lyrics
seems
to be taken right out of my thoughts.
It's a perfect pop gem, and the video is the hippest thing The Cure has
ever
done.
This time around, The Cure actually dialed the 'right number'."
-Charlie
"I just wanted to say that the NEW singles
are great I love "cuTHEre". It shows us all what The Cure are really
about and how you just can't forget about
a band so great as The Cure. Much love to the band and hope you guys
come out to LA for some more shows we miss
you guys."
- FYVO
"I adore this song. The swirling keyboards
and lanquished guitar are so brilliant. I like the way Robert sings "I
miss you..." This song should be playing everywhere
once the album comes out. The song also reminds me a bit
of "Harold and Joe"-dancey. The longing in
Robert's voice is so real. That's why I've been a Cure fan for 20+
years(I'm old I'll admit it!). I didn't really
like that silly Billy line, tho. Anyway The Cure are the best band and
with "Cut Here" their legend continues! "
- Larry
"I think Cut Here is absolutely brilliant.
Not only is it a perfect pop song, but I love the New Order vibe.
How
perfect is that, to put a song on the Cure's
Greatest Hits collection that has a keyboard line so reminiscent of New
Order and Joy Division. I can't imagine
that it is simply a coincidence. We are all aware of the comments
that have
come out of New Order's camp for years (That
The Cure rip them off). Over the years their complaints have
become irrelevant, because The Cure's career
has dwarfed their own in both size and scope. I love it! I
also love
the song simply on the merits of musicality.
It is a wonderful example of The Cure's ability to create pop songs
that sound vaguely familiar, but all together
fresh and new. It is nice to see that a band can remain vibrant and
pertinent while flirting with middle age!"
- John Peterson
"I thought it was really moving, charming.
I had no trouble to get into it, unlike "Wrong Number" which took a
little longer. The video was very well fitting
for this song too. I will definitely get this. Truth to be told, it was
a
relief to notice that they still have got
it!"
- Liza
"Great song!! Reminds me of the sound
from Head On The Door era. Robert sings really well....carries the
vocals to the best level in a while. Roger
does a great job on synths as usual. The synth part in the middle is xlnt.
I think the whole comparision thing with new
order is rubbish. The Cure has their own sound to the degree(which
varies greatly from melancholic to pop)that
they do not need to "borrow" from other bands like so many groups
seem to need to do these days. I think its
a great continuation in the wonderful string of one off singles they have
done over the years. I enjoy the changes from
the epic, majestic songs of Disintegration, Faith, Bloodflowers to the
poppy sounds of songs like this. It serves
to reaffirm the Cure's great musical abilities to not stay in one mode
of
type of music. Great work by the band...Keep
It Coming!!!! : ) "
- Mark Green
"I can’t see why everyone is having a go at this single.
Granted I have listened to the download from
the Elektra site and the quality is not great but the song still stands
up. There is much of tracks gone by-I
even hear a little Edge of the Deep Green Sea near the end. As mentioned
before there is that underlining riff heard
so many times before - isn’t that why we like it? Rob’s voice is
laboured
and slightly 'mechanical' which kind of lowers
the songs enormous potential but nethertheless it still works
Its not the best single they have ever done
but I can see people listening to it in the pub and I KNOW for definite
that it will be played as an opening theme
to Saturday Morning Grandstand very soon over here in the UK.
Mark my words. It has that driving,
summertime feel which makes me happy and I’m sure a lot of other people
too.
Let’s hope they do a couple of shows where we can all get beered up and dance puppets. Well, I will anyway.
- Damian "RFC The Royals"
"A short comment on "Cut here"... Has anyone
else noticed that the bass line (D-D-G-A) is almost the same
as the one in the Glove's song "Punish me
with kisses"?? Maybe it's more a question of sounding like the
Glove (except of the drums), and not so much
like New Order..."
- Marcos, Porto Alegre, Brazil
"I finally got the opportunity to listen to
"Cut Here" from the Elektra website. And actually, I've been
listening to it repeatedly for the past 90
minutes. I was worried how'd I react at first. But this one
of the songs
that I fall in love with immediately. I really
think this single has big chance at being a hit. I think its an instant
classic. A peppy sound with classic
Cure-type lyrics like "Keep on making the same mistake. Keep on aching
the same heartbreak".
But my favorite part of the song is something
so simple. The way Robert emphasizes "so much" when he sings
"I miss you, I miss you, I miss you so much".
(heavy sigh) Sometimes I am reminded why I have this eternal
devotion to The Cure".
- Tim
"Finally got to here the new single (thank
you Elektra)! To me, there are two kind of Cures, one that can make
you feel very melancholic (but in a very positive
way), and one that makes you happy for no particalur reason.
The last song that made me feel very happy
was a pink dream, and that was the only one on WMS i'm afraid.
But we have a new winner, after hearing it
about four times I just fell in love with the song. I don't know
if it will
do anything in the charts (let's wat for the
video and see if MTV likes it) but I do think it will get some airplay
here in Belgium.
- Christoph Sack
"well..this is more of a response of reading the reviews, rather than my own takes on the songs.
those who say they are delivering the cure
"same old shite" should probably stop writing the same old reviews.
as the cliche inevitably goes... the cure
have proved once again to throw devotees off their course and hook the
newer listeners. the reviews are always
very mixed and i think total exaltation would probably denote something
that's a little too easy to like.
congrats boys."
- Carolyn
"Imagine it's Winter 1984. The Caterpillar
single and The Top and Concert albums have been and gone during
the course of the year. At this stage The
Cure have never recorded any of their New Order-esque jangly pop songs.
Now imagine that they will never go on to record The Head On The Door album.....
If (in 1985) they had then released Cut Here
I would have been amazed at the fantastic jangly bass lines (both
Simon's regular bass and Robert's 6-string
bass), a huge grin would have covered my face at this songs amazing
alternative poptasticness, I would no doubt
have watched an awesome video with the band having an amazing time,
the happiest they've been for years, oh the
joy !
And now back to reality.....
Cut Here isn't even as good a track as The
Exploding Boy, the b-side to Inbetween Days. Yeah, it's not as good
as a B-SIDE !!!!! That awful keyboard
refrain sounds like it's escaped from any post-punk British pop-band from
1980, Robert's lyrics are no longer bordering
on self-parody, they ARE self-parody (I hope).
I truly can't believe that this is the same
line-up of The Cure that made Bloodflowers, I want to wake up from
this nightmare and find out they were just
joking !
Robert wonders why the world at large ignores
The Cure. Well, it's because whenever they have an opportunity
to really make a big success of themselves
they end up releasing really poor singles like this or Wrong Number.
I actually think Wrong Number is good, but
could anyone see it entering the Top 40 of any countries pop-singles
chart ?
It saddens me, but to non-Cure fans this is
really just going to reaffirm the popular notion that The Cure are
a bunch of sad 1980's throwbacks.
I will buy the single, but only because I pray that Signal To Noise will be a saving grace. "
- David Herron, England
"I think the song was really impressive and
to me its sound like a hit . maybe that someday has come and the
cure will resurect and get another hit. if
you havent heard the new single go to the cure web site and go to
the
curevision and go to the day where teddy"perry"
is listening to a song and cuT HEre is playing.
I just wish that one of these days they will stop these poppy dance beat songs and back to disintegration moods..
ALEX rates it a 9 out of 10"
- Alex Rivera
"No one's mentioned that the new single sounds
quite a bit like "Return" off WMS, minus the cocaine. Also,
a big "Thank you" to whoever taped the XFM
show and shared the MP3. The wait to buy the single will be far
more bearable. I hope Robert and the
band aren't pissed off by that..."
- Paul Thomas, Torrance, California
"I remember myself taking home my aunt a few
years ago. She asked me to come in and say hello to her
husband, (I haven't seen him for about a year).
I really liked this very old man and his stories but I just wanted
to get home to play some PC -Game. Later on
that day my mother told me, that he died only 2 hours after this...
Apart from that it's a really good pop song
and definitely the right song to support the Greatest hits. Is it a great
cure song then? I don't think so, although
the lyrics do really impress me. This is the general problem of most of
their singles: They are too much pop to impress
the fans, and too "cure-ish" to hit the charts."
- Ingmar, Germany
"I just heard "cut here' online @ xfm. I've
been listening to XFM for two days at work here in San Francisco
and must say It's a great station. As far
as "cut here" is concerned they should not have wasted there time
recording it. I'm looking forward to hearing
"just say yes" and "signal to noise." It's cool to see Mr. Smith
duet with Saffron, and not Gwen Stephani which
he probably considered before Moby and Eve used her. The
new album cover is very cool - I am way more
excited about that."
- Dave Vardanega
"Well, you've probably been inundated with
collective ramblings but as an old-time Cure fan who remembers
when Killing An Arab came out I have to say...what
a load of old tosh. Is this really from the man that wrote
Siamese Twins, Ariel, and LoveCats?
It's an easy song for Robert, by which I mean
the type of verse and rhymes and cadences are the sort of thing
he does in his sleep...the old 'I'm not me
any more' bit. The singing is lack-lustre, and we know Robert can sing
because he's spent the last ten years proving
it.
Musically it's decrepit, Fender bass VI or
not. That Bontempi organ sound should never have made it out of Pro
Tools.
It's that old mentor thing...I now have the
same mixed feelings about him as he does about Bowie: innate respect
for what he's done in the past allied to suspicion
that they're just past it and going through the motions. I hope
not.
Oh well, here's to better stuff..."
- Ben Scammell
"I just listened to the song, and with a huge
grin on my face. Usually I'm very skeptical about "next things", and
was half-disappointed in "Bloodflowers". "Cut
Here" sounds like something from a "The Head On the Door" of
the future. The singing is less excitable,
but with all the usual glottles and other shortcomings (as classically
trained people call them) that make the voice
so great. The synth sound in the bridge/chorus is worth the price of
admission. I'm still working on the wherefores,
but for me "Cut Here" is a must-listen/obtain where with "Wrong
Number" I vaguely remembered how it went after
just hearing it. hmm..."
- Matt O.
"It seems that you are only putting positive
reviews of Cut Here on your web site, so i probably shouldn't bother
with this.
I'm unimpressed. It sounds average.
I want Never Enough. I want Wrong Number. Excellent one-off
singles,
those. This one seems like something
left off of Wild Mood Swings. I hear New Order in the song (which
isn't
new for the Cure--remember The Walk / Blue
Monday controversy). I also hear the Lightning Seeds "Pure" from
the early 90's.
At least they are trying something new with Just Say Yes."
- Chris Bonham
"Hey I just heard it and I must say I'm quite
impressed! This band has still got it after all these years.
I see the
much talked about New Order influence, but
I think the feel of this song is ultimately %100 Cure. At first when
those big techno beats came in I was thinking,
"Oh great, Wrong Number part 2," but then that cool processed
guitar bit came in and I started to get intrigued.
And the chorus just totally won me over. It is very, very fun. I'm
sure we'll all be singing along to it like
delirious fools before long. As for that New Order-ish bass line,
to me it
actually sounds a whole lot like the hook
from Just Like Heaven. So much so that I'm thinking it must've been
intentional, like a self reference or something.
After all, the song is called, "the cure". I can't wait to hear
whatever else the guys have in store. "
- Dean
"I heard it on XFM yesterday a few times and
thought it was brilliant straight away. Its a classic Cure pop
song, got a really happy feel to it. Roberts
voice sounds great and its quite catchy. Before hearing it I feared
that it wasn't going to be as good as the
old singles but it turns out its one of their best ever & I'm sure
that they
will pick up some new fans when people hear
it. "
- Andrew
"I just caught the new single on Claire's XFM
broadcast. Robert's vocals sound great w/ exceptional energy
and depth. The only "New Order" aspect
I hear may be in the keyboard line. But even some of the band's best
singles (Inbetween Days, The Walk) have drawn
those comparisons. So comments like "New Order sounding,"
shouldn't scare anyone. The song as
a whole is classic Cure. Nice six string bass lines. This single
will probably
do better than Wrong Number. Isn't it
nice to have something new, and a possibility of live shows?!?!?!
- Jeff Boortz
"I recorded cut here of xfm a couple of days
ago AT LAST a new single that if promoted well will do very well.
this has got to be the best single the band
have made since 1992. being a hardcore fan since 1987, it has been
very frustrating to see the bands popularity
dive since the mid 90s, this hopefully will put them back where they
belong (even my mum said "its better than
previous stuff, very catchy")this is the most uptempo single they have
made. robert smith is a god, there is no end
to the cure's brilliance. and please do some live dates soon my
girlfreind still hasn't forgiven me for not
taking her to wembley last year."
- Dominic
"I really like the new single "Cut Here".
It reminds me of my grandma. My dad told me to go see her and I
said I was too busy that week. She died
2 days later and I've never forgiven myself for it. The song really
hit
close to home for me as Cure songs seem to
do."
- Joe Rodriguez
"Just my thoughts on Cut Here... it seems that
Robert said: "do you need a hit? so I'll do one for you.." .. the
song is perfect pop ! all of the formulas
are there, but upgraded and done with talent..."
- Antonio
"Just heard the single and i think its rubbish!
Its obvious that they have just knocked it up over a few days
because they had to do something, and it will
certainly do a poor job in promoting the new album, in the UK
anyway, where i would imagine it'll get nowhere
near the top 20, but then again, i hope it does well because its
still better than the mince you usually get
in the charts."
- Jamie
"I´m listening to "cuTHEre" since the
morning and personally, i think it´s one of the best singles they
ever did...
i really don´t think it sounds like
new order, it´s a cure-popsong but a bit different than older singles.
robert plays
his beloved 6string and the song has a cool
bassline, as well as a nice didgeridoo-sample in the background, i think!
to me it sounds very modern and catchy!!!
and roberts singing is very great on this tune..."
- Chris
"It's BRILLIANT!!!! I am beyond impressed.
After listening to the song several times today I have found that
it touches me on several different levels
(ahhh I am such the drama queen).
When I listen to it I it just reminds me of
one of those situations when you tell someone you'll see them again or
you'll meet them and then something happens
and the plans falls through and you lose contact and spend a lot of
time with regret of what might have been...
("if only...")
I am very thankful to the band for creating,
yet again, something so wonderful and I am looking forward to the
Greatest Hits CD's and DVD.
They never seem to let me down. "
- Anise
"After waiting for 3hours listening to xfm
this morning finally caught 'cut here' ! my first impression was that it
sounded like a new order track, very uplifting
and probably going to be a grower...."
-Angela Birtwell
"XFM are playing it quite a bit and I've now
heard it three times, but have to say it hasn't quite grabbed me yet.
The chorus reminds me of parts of 'Doing the
Unstuck' and the bass line, as a few had said already, is New
Order-ish. Longing to hear Signal to Noise
as the b-sides sometimes eclipse the main track."
- Ben Checksfield
