Dec. 16th-Birmingham,England (N.E.C)

Review by Tim

The final show of the Swing Tour has to be described as
frightening. Although the setlist was pretty standard, the playing
wasn't. The concert started off quite normally with the normal songs,
but as the songs turned more serious, Robert was getting really
emotional. Especially Bare, Disintegration, and Faith were really
intense and powerful. It was difficult to know how to react because
it was so touching but also a bit disturbing seeing get so emotional.
He certainly didn't feel comfortable on stage at times. After Bare he
kept his acoustic on for ages as he faced the drums. Simon went over
to say something to him and about a minute into Disintegration he
picked up his six string bass and reluctantly started playing.
I think they tried to keep the set fairly upbeat, in order to end
the tour as a celebration rather than a funeral, but it still felt
like an end to something. A nice moment was when they came up for
the last encore (same as in Sheffield Subway Song-Killing an Arab)
and he said something like 'today is exactly 20 years to the day
since I first stood on stage. I had just written this song then, so
this kind of brings things full cirlce' (interpret that how you want
to).
Besides the touching songs I mentioned the highlights for me
were: This is a lie, Strange Attraction, Gone!, Grinding Halt, Killing
an Arab, and Charlotte Sometimes. Especially Gone! was brilliant
with some excellent new keyboard parts, Robert playing the trumpet
solo on guitar, and him singing it in a strange way. Charlotte
Sometimes was also brilliant with really loud guitaring.
The atmosphere wasn't great because the floor was all seating
so there wasn't the same unity in the crowd and people were a bit
self conscious of what they were doing, so most people just stood
there tapping their feet. Because of the different nature of where
I've been standing at the concerts it's hard to say which of the last
three was the best because they were all special for different
reasons, somtimes nothing to do with the bands performance.
From an objective view I'd say that Manchester's incredible set makes
it my favourite, but by very very little. The intensity in Birmingham
is what I will remember most from seeing these Swing Tour dates.
Well, that sums it up for me but then again I'm no music critic, so
these are just my random impressions that might or might no interest
you. In the meanitime let's just hope that this wasn't the last that
we see of them.

the concert was wierd, my least favourite i have ever seen, although it
was f#$%ing intense.
the most worrying thing was to my mind the little change of lyrics in
FTEOTDGS where he sang something like

"remember, it won't be here for ever"
"time to say goodbye".

which no one seemed to notice!
hmm not good, not good at all.
