Dec. 14th-Manchester,England (Nynex Arena)
Review by Tim
The concerts two openers Plainsong and Want were again really good,
then five songs into the set Robert said 'This is from Pornography,
it's called a hundred years', the crowd livened up at the front (the
rest of the stadium was really empty) and I knew we were going to get
a good set. After that the set took off and song after song I was
positively surprised. Ok, The 13th didn't sound particularly good but
it was still great to hear it. Funeral Party, especially, was really
intense, I wonder what all the casual fans thought.Same Deep water
As You Robert introduced by saying something like: 'this one we
haven't done for like five years, the last time we did it was here in
Manchester. This is called Same Deep Water As You.' and it was
beautiful.
In the end there seemed to be a lot of confusion about what they should
play and Roger,Simon, and Robert kept discussing what to play, and then Simon
went over to hug Roger (?).
It was really strange, Roger started playing A Forest, but then
Robert started making noises on his guitar, so Roger stopped and
Robert started Boy's Don't Cry. Then after Boy's Don't Cry they
played a Forest, which sizzled out in a weird way. Robert played the
solo, the tempo slowed, Robert played some more, and then he put his
guitar down so Simon and Jason continued for a bit and then they just
stopped playing, without the usual bass ending. Then on the way off
stage Roger grabbed the bass and hit all the strings a couple of
times. And that was the end of a fantastic concert.
