'I must fight the sickness'
Szeged, Hungary, Szegedi Ifjúsági Napok, The Cure, 2005. august 26th
I am just back from the best band’s great gig here in Hungary, for the 3rd time ever in my country, after the huge success in 1989, and after the 2002 Budapest Sziget Festival occasion.
Firstly, one notion: i met some people who misunderstood, and they thought Szeged is the same as Sziget. Well, it is the ’secret’ of the hungarian language. / an austrian group even reserved the rooms in a hotel in Budapest! They thought of the Sziget festival!)
You have to know that The Cure are here in ’cult’ status, ( in the late 80s the band was with Depeche Mode the most popular musical direction) but it was very friendly thought to see so many young people with make up, und with the big hair. I am since 13 years in the capture of their music, and i thought ( and i awaited too ) that the band will play a long, also strange set, and they make the best way to make our night so great as possible. We awaited a so long set as only the band would have made an own separate gig.
The band before the Cure, was professional, but the music was ’nothing to say’.
I was very ill ( also now with influence by a sickness) but i tried to reach a stronger form to see them live for an unforgettable hard deep emotional night.
The band begun nearly as the planned time. It was a great occasion to see Porl in the band, unfortunately i never see him before. They played ’Open’ very loud, very energetic, and professional.
All the night was so, after open then came ’Fascination street’ and then ’From the edge of the deep green sea.’. In the middle of the main set the band performed a lot of their well known success, like: ’just like heaven’, inbetween days’ and ’lullaby’, and other songs like push. Simon was so perfect, and with big male output, very ’dark’ style, and agressive. One of the best moment was this night when Simon kissed the hair of his guitar road( ?) during an encore song.
The crowd was with the band, and very into the music. There were some interesting rare songs like ’a letter to Elise’, and ’shiver and shake’, or the ’signal to noise’ on guitars only.
And Simon, the bass-god, was so impressioned to me again, i love him, his play. I thing he prefer the energetic side of the songs, like ’shake dog shake’, ott he ’one hundred years’.
The last two song sin the main set were ’shiver and shake’ and ’end’.
The more valuable things happened during the 3 encores, and we came back with them to the cradle of the band, where they performed songs from the late ’70s and the early ’80-s ( 1980 and 1981).
The ’At night’ was always one my wish to hear it live, and they played with so many feeling, then M, Play for today, and ’A forest’ which was with hard guitar intro piece. I showed a ’Victory’ sign to polr, i think he noticed me because he was smiling.
The second encore included songs from the ’Faith album’. Before this gig i was in other live shows, ( also in Berlin ’Trilogy’ show ) but i never never heard a faith album track live before, i always pleased god to have a chance to make me this wonder, and the dream came true.
Robert said: ’this song we play now for the first time in this tour’, then a wonderful ’the drowning man’ grown up. You have to know that me and my girl-friend (Agnes) the most important LP is ’Faith’, so we were cried when they played it. The atmosphere int he crowd has changed, i think a lot of people didn’t know this intimate side of their career, and then the ’faith’ was incredible. The lightning was ont he lowest side, i just saw Simon and Rober in the shadows of some lights…At the end of song Robert turned inside to Jason, i think he was crying, as we…
Never i will forget this moment…
Then they also came back for the 3rd time. The played Three imaginary boys, the Grinding halt, 10.15, and ’loving an arab’. The last two songs were a dream, the crowd was dancing, and singing so intensive…unforgettable moments.
That was 2 hours and 45 minutes long, the climax of the gig was Robert’s last words: ’see you next year on tour’, and he noticed a new album will be released shortly.
That was for today, i don’t try to use fake, and monumental words, but it was my best Cure gig live ( more than the Trilogy night in berlin 3 years ago) , very intensive, hard, and long play with (nearly) perfect set, thank you, and thanx for all the people they were there to make a good night for The Cure too.
