California Department of Justice Receives Governor's Employee Safety Award

(SACRAMENTO) – The California Department of Justice today received the Governor's Employee Safety Award for the greatest improvement in reducing workers' compensation costs among all state agencies with payrolls exceeding $150 million during the 1997-98 fiscal year.

"This governor's award is wonderful recognition of the efforts being put in by state Department of Justice employees to reduce the number of workplace injuries," Lockyer said. "Everyone in the Department of Justice deserves to share in the award."

In fiscal year 1997-98 the Department of Justice paid a total of $3,457,778 in workers' compensation costs. This is 14.29% less than in the 1996-97 fiscal year where workplace injuries resulted in $3,757,397 in workers' compensation claims.

Don Hayashida, Chief of the Personnel Programs Administrative Services Division for the Department of Justice accepted the award during the Governors' Employee Safety Awards Ceremony in Sacramento today.
