Junk Mail

Although there is no sure way of getting off all mailing lists, you can still try. For those individuals wishing to limit the volume of unsolicited mail and telephone calls received, there are two services provided free-of-charge by the Direct Marketing Association (DMA), a national trade association of direct marketing companies.

Upon request to the DMA, you can limit national print advertising and telephone advertising calls. Be aware that not all companies utilize DMA's services so that you may still receive mail or calls from other companies, especially those operating locally within your area.

To remove your name from nationally-based advertising lists, you may write to the Mail Preference Service. For the Mail Preference Service, you must provide your name, street, apartment number (if applicable), city, state, and zip code, and telephone number (including area code). Address a card with the information to:

Mail Preference Service
P.O. Box 9008
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9008

To remove your name from nationally-based telephone solicitation lists, you may write to:

Telephone Preference Service
P.O. Box 9014
Farmingdale, NY 11735-9014

It should take no longer than four months to stop receiving many unwanted materials.

If you want to be included in both services, DMA requests that consumers send in separate requests.
