Investments

The Department of Corporations is a licensing and regulatory agency that reports to Business, Transportation and Housing Agency Secretary Maria Contreras-Sweet and Governor Gray Davis.

The department is responsible for the regulation of securities, franchises, off-exchange commodities, investment and financial services, independent escrows, consumer and commercial finance lending, and residential mortgage lending.

The Department of Financial Institutions is also part of the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency. The Department is charged with enforcing the State's laws relating to state-licensed banks, state-licensed savings and loans, trust companies, state-licensed offices of foreign banks, issuers of travelers checks and payment instruments (money orders), transmitters of money abroad, state-licensed credit unions, and state-licensed industrial loan companies.  You are invited to visit California's Financial Center where you will find detailed lists of licensees.  The Department of Financial Institutions provides supervision which fosters the competent management of individual institutions who protect depositors and serve the needs of communities. Licensees are examined periodically in order to ensure their safety, soundness, and compliance with accepted practices.
