  • The California Crime Index rate decreased 13.0 percent.

  • The violent crime rate decreased 12.2 percent.

  • The property crime rate decreased 13.4 percent.
Crime and Delinquency in California, 1998, Advance Release is published by the Department of Justice in order to provide annual 1998 criminal justice data as soon as possible. Information about crimes, arrests, and adult felony arrest dispositions is included.

This publication contains data reported to the Department of Justice for the calendar year 1998. It compares rates for the periods 1997 and 1998. Since 1980 marked a high point for the California Crime Index (CCI), rates for the periods 1980 and 1998 are also compared. The more extensive report, Crime and Delinquency in California, 1998, will be published later this year.

Data depicting crime in California have been published continuously for over 40 years. The first publication, Crime in California, was issued in 1953 and included data for the 1952 calendar year.


DATA TABLES

The following data tables are presented in order to allow the interested reader an opportunity to examine crime, arrest, and disposition trends in California for the years 1993 through 1998. Crime data are broken down by the offenses comprising the CCI and FBI Crime Index. These offenses are: homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, larceny-theft, and arson. The arrest data are broken down by adult and juvenile, felony, misdemeanor, and status offense arrests. The last table displays the type of dispositions and sentences that can be received within California's criminal justice system.
